Windows 8.1 Won't Shut Down
Aug 5, 2014
For the past 2 weeks (approximately), when I click "Shut Down" on my Win 8 laptop, nothing happens. If I click "Sleep," it goes to sleep right away, but it will not shut down. I see by the forum posts that my problem isn't unique. I have tried all three methods described in the post: [URL] .... - all to no avail. I have also tried Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and unchecked Turn on fast start up as other posts have suggested.
In Method 2 described in the post above, I ran sfc /scannow and ended up with the following result:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in C:/Windows/Logs/CBS/cbs.log. (I tried to attach the file but it's 15MB, too large).
My Win 8 machine is new (only a few months old) and my system specs are attached also. It was shutting down fine, I have a feeling this happened during a Windows Update.

I'm using Windows 8 Professional (got it from MSDNAA as soon as it appeared there ) and it seems to me that Windows 8 doesn't really shut down properly. I attached an image taken with Snipping Tool and it showed that the CPU up-time is 4 days etc etc..
The inconsistency here is, I just booted up my laptop few minutes ago. I did shut down my laptop properly every time. The only explanation here is that this 4 days ago was the day when I placed my battery back into the laptop.
But the laptop supposed to shut down PROPERLY right?

I recently bought a new laptop which has windows 8 installed on it and at times when I put it into sleep mode the screen goes off but the computer is still running and I have to use the power button to turn it off(Which I don't really like to do). When I turn it off the same thing happens and sometimes when I'm lucky it will give me an error message .I have download all of the updates for windows 8 which did not solve it and I disabled fast bootup which didn't either I am just wondering if I download 8.1 will it fix it although I installed 8.1 on another laptop and the same thing happened and then I installed just 8 which gave me the same result.

Is it possible to change the "Shut Down Windows" screen (which appears if I press Alt+F4 on my Desktop)? Currently the following options are available to me in the drop-down box:
*Change User
*Logout
*Energy Saving Mode
*Shut Down
*Restart
And it is defaulted to *Shut Down.I want to get rid of all the options except: *Shut Down and *Restart. And I want to keep *Shut Down as the default option to show up. -Is this possible?
I would also like to move the *Restart option so that it appears above the *Shut Down option (it is currently below.)

I set up windows to automatically install updates, and I don't want to change that.
When I'm in a hurry to restart or shutdown my PC and I only see "Shut down installing updates" and "Restart installing updates", is there some way to do it bypassing the update?
I've tried command line: shutdown /s but it doesn't work (it updates before shutting down).
Likewise, Alt+F4 (from the desktop) only offers shutting down or restarting and updating.
Neiter logging out and then choosing to shut down (your only choice is also to update and shutdown/restart).

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my computer has become almost unusable. It freezes, can't maintain connections in Internet Explorer, has thousands of event errors, takes several MINUTES to start, and now causes the PSU to shut down during start. I does this with 3 different PSU's. I also can't use secure boot anymore. When I look up event error fixes, microsoft wants me to make registry changes, uninstall and re-install programs, and do other risky things that I'm just not qualified to do. I'm just afraid of really screwing things up beyond repair. It took me forever to get windows 8 installed, and I thought 8.1 would be better.

I read somewhere that the Bluetooth physical transmitter sends out some type of signal into the environment. I also read that it's probably not harmful... but since I probably will not be using Bluetooth in the immediate future, it's probably better off.
Is there an easy way in Windows 8 to shut off Bluetooth for now?

Windows 8 which I installed recently (from factory recovery image) suddenly now takes too long to shutdown.
Around 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I tried disabling and enabling "Fast Startup" but that didn't affect the shutdown time.
Also reduced the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" from 5000ms to 3000ms but also there is no effect.
Also the "ClearPageFileAtShutdown" is set to 0.
I even tried hibernating instead of shutdown and it took 2:20 minutes too !Also disabled hibernate with "powercfg -h off" and tried to shutdown , and took 2:20 minutes too.

I have a laptop that's only about 5 months old and runs Windows 8. When I had to pack it up to go, I went to shut it down, and it started doing the windows update. I closed the laptop, packed it up, and left. When I start it back up, I see a screen with two options: Troubleshoot and Power off your PC. When I click trouble shoot, this is what I see:
Refresh your PC, and Reset your PC, Advanced options.
When I click refresh my PC, it says "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
When I click reset, it says, "Unable to reset PC. A required drive partition is missing."
When I click advanced options, this is the screen : [URL] ......
The four options are: System Restore System Image Recovery Automatic Repair Command Prompt
When I click System restore, it says I need to restart the PC, and select an OS and then select system restore, but I have no clue how to do that.
SIR says "The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)
Auto Repair says that it cannot fix my PC. No reason why.

When I choose to either shut down, restart or put my laptop to sleep through the Windows 8.1 start menu, usually everything is okay and the process works, however sometimes (I'd say one attempt on four), the computer is stuck with the screen turned off but the fan still turned on! In this case all I can do is to force the laptop to shut down by pressing the power button 5 seconds, but I was always told it was somehow bad for the computer and would eventually damage it

I've had my windows 8 computer since December and for the past month or so it will not restart or shut down unless I do a hard shut down with the power button. When hitting restart it starts to shut down, then comes up with "restarting" screen and just stays there, never moves from there. On shut down it just freezes after closing down windows. It can't be good always shutting down via the power button. I haven't added any new programs at all so not sure why this started happening.

Whenever I click the "shut down" button, the PC powers off for a moment and then just starts up again... I've tried disabling fast boot option in the power settings but that does nothing. Also every time my PC starts it says "Your PC ran into a problem" and some other info about on how it is a "system failure" and how I can send it to Microsoft. It also creates a MEMORY.DMP file in my System32 folder. This is really bugging me and it's happening since I reinstalled my Windows after getting a new motherboard, cpu and ram. Should I try reinstalling my Windows 8 again or is there a simpler solution to this? Also I have the latest version of BIOS and my system specs are:
Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 rev 3.0
AMD FX-8320 Black Edition Turbo mode @ 3.7ghz
2x4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 @ 1600mhz (it goes a little bit over that since of the turbo mode of my cpu)
VIA Audio integrated on the mobo
LC Power LC600H-12 @ 600W

I have a Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, has 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, running Windows 8.1 which I had installed the day it came out..the PC I purchased in September 2013..for the past few weeks I have noticed how when I shut down the pc that it can take up to 4 minutes to shut down, the monitor will go black but the power button the tower will remain white til it turns off, it used to turn off in a matter of seconds, now its minutes..same issue for restart, takes about 3 minutes to restart and no one from Dell can figure out what the problem is..all I had installed in December were updates from microsoft thats it, other than that nothing new has been installed. Yesterday I got a notification from Dell on my PC notifying me that I should update my BIOS which was A4 to A6 which I did and still the same issue..talked to five technicians and no one can figure it out, been told maybe its software related and I need to reformat the hard drive, I feel that would be a waste of time, if there was an actual cause I would do it, but to format my hard drive with no known cause of this problem would be stupid, it would just happen again.

I was forced into win 8.1 and I am trying to make the best of it. Any how I have no sound on startup, shutdown, and mail delivery. MS did away with because it limited the performance. So I read !!! Is there a workaround to get it back, if so, is it easy. Now where was I! "oh yes" now I remember I asking for sound updates if they have one.

At random, Windows would refuse to shut down, although it would cancel out the display. Hitting the power button it would bring the PC back to life in a state half in shutdown and half alive. Upon restart, Windows will refuse to detect my LAN driver. It wouldn't even show up on the device manager (not even as an unknown device).
I have Gigabyte G1 Assassin motherboard with BigFoot Network LAN card. To make the LAN work again, I have to delete the Big Killer Network software from my PC and re-install it again. But after two days, Windows will do the same thing all over again.

Intel Core i7 processor

Yesterday while I was sleeping, a thunder struck nearby my house while my PC was running. After that I immediately switched the PSU from 1 to 0 without trying to shut it down properly. Since then I cannot shut down my PC without switching off the PSU. To tell you exactly what happens, I press the shutdown button in Windows 8.1 normally, after that it shuts down for around half a second, turns back on for half a second and then again turns off for half a second. After that it powers back on. I forgot to mention that my integrated network card on the motherboard died after the lightning as well. My MOBO has some kind of electrostatic discharge protection as well. Last thing, when I booted up my PC for the first time after I turned it off by switching off the PSU, it said "Setting thing up for you" like I started Windows for the first time.
System specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-D3
CPU: AMD FX-8320 @ 3.5ghz
GPU: MSI 7790 1GB OC GDDR5
RAM: Kingston HyperX DDR3 2x4GB @ 1600mhz
PSU: LC Power LC600H-12

I recently built my fourth computer with the following components:
Case: Thermaltake Soprano Mid-Tower VO900M1N2N
MOBO: ASUS Z-87 Deluxe/Quad
CPU: Intel i7-4770K (Haswell)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W
HD: Samsung 840 EVO 1TB
GPU: ASUS Radeon HD7790
Logitech MX3000 Wireless Keyboard & Mouse Combo
The operating system is Windows 8.1 Pro (clean install on the SSD). The system is so fast and awesome that it refuses to shut down. It makes no difference how I shutdown, it restarts in about 3 seconds. I have to physically cut power to the PSU to shut it down. I have updated all the device drivers and have the latest BIOS (version 1707) according to the ASUS website. I
As a troubleshooting measure, I also did a clean install of Windows 8.1 (not Pro version) on a 250 GB WD HD without the MOBO and GPU drivers and booted with only this HD (all other storage devices unplugged). The same problem persists so I believe it is a BIOS setting or a motherboard problem. I am using the default BIOS settings without overclocking the CPU.

I've done a fresh install of 8.1 RT and all appears to be well except if I shut down.
If I select restart it restarts fine.
However if I select Shutdown, I get the woindows shreen telling me it's shutting down, then the monitor goes blank, but the PC is going indefinitely (I've given it 15 mins)
If I press the reset button on the PC case it reboots into windows without any "windows didn't shut down" type messages during bootup.
However if I check the event log, it does say
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

I installed Windows 8 and another monitor on my GeForce GT 240 video card. I have one monitor on a DVI and another monitor on VGA. Every couple of minutes the computer shuts down. It can be anywhere from one minute to one hour or maybe not at all. My power setting or set to NEVER on both monitor and Sleep. I'm wondering if it can be my Video card that is shutting down my computer. I know Video cards, and RAM that can stop a computer cold. Or could it be something in Windows 8.

After im playing in this case battlefield bad company 2 or now it was battlefield 4 after like 5-10 minutes i hear my video card is working very hard it's fan and the temperature is like 110-117c.
Then after more 5 minutes or so the monitor is shut down and the pc is frozen i can't click anything only can restart the pc. It's like the pc is in sleep mode but frozen. I don't have any blue screen before it.
I'm not sure if the problem is drivers like the video card drivers memory or virus. I have nod 32 did scan last night cleaned 17 threats.
