Can Windows 8.1 / 7 Be Shut Down Without Installing Updates
Sep 15, 2014
I set up windows to automatically install updates, and I don't want to change that.
When I'm in a hurry to restart or shutdown my PC and I only see "Shut down installing updates" and "Restart installing updates", is there some way to do it bypassing the update?
I've tried command line: shutdown /s but it doesn't work (it updates before shutting down).
Likewise, Alt+F4 (from the desktop) only offers shutting down or restarting and updating.
Neiter logging out and then choosing to shut down (your only choice is also to update and shutdown/restart).

I was using my son's laptop (hp 255) as mine is in for repair and thought I would install windows 8.1 onto his system as a free upgrade (bought in march this year running windows 8) Unfortunately the power failed whilst the update was installing and now I can't boot up the computer and he did not create a system repair disk I have looked at safe mode (turn on and press esc) and that will bring me to various options - I have tried restore and it appears there are no restore dates available..

I have a windows 7 home premium retail license and upgraded to windows 8 pro x64 using promotion discount. Now I want to use some 16 bit applications that won't work with windows 8 x64. So I want to install either windows 7 or windows 8 32 bits on another partition along with windows 8 x64. Would it be legal ?

About couple hours ago I decided to install updates on my Windows 8 desktop. I had about 12 or so. Can't remember which ones now. My update settings are to notify me of the updates but not to install them. So I manually clicked, yes, install. Then after a little while the updates window showed up in red telling me that some updates did not install. So I decided to reboot the desktop to clear it up...
The desktop now hangs up on this very screen: (New windows logo and a spinning thing)
That spinning thing keeps spinning, no matter how long I let it run like this. The HDD light first blinks but then about half a minute in, it stops doing so. I believe that the fan inside spins audibly louder too.
OK, so if I reboot by holding down the power button for a few seconds, it begins rebooting again. For the second time it showed something like "Automatic repair" or something. (I need to say that my solid state drives have Bit locker set up on them.) So after entering the bit locker keys I was presented with an option to do repairs. Since I didn't feel like I needed to do system restore I declined and chose to keep booting into Windows.... again nothing.
So I repeated the process above, but this time it did not offer me to do system restore and instead, it showed something in the tune of "Repair windows". So I chose it, and it then showed this window:
Now I tried it two times already, and no matter what I choose, it hangs up just like I showed on the screenshot above -- with that white border around whatever I choose... How do I get my desktop back?

I just bought my computer 2 weeks ago .. I filled in my specs and also uploaded my system info information as an attachment. Last night, I tried to download the windows 8.1 update. I let it run over night, but this morning when I woke, I had a blue screen that said windows could not fix my problem .. and gave me options to try. I ended up having to wipe my computer to factory conditions. After the restore .. the only thing I installed before downloading updates was my driver for my NVIDIA Geforce750 Ti card, and my wireless network adapter ..
I then downloaded 91 updates .. all failed .. and didn't install .. error 800F0922.
sfc /scannow .. got to 51% .. then ..
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windirlogscbscbs.log. For example C:windowslogscbscbs.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

I have Windows 8. Received a Toshiba Satellite p875 last year for Christmas. Recently when I shut down my laptop it goes into "installing update" mode, only it does not install anything. It will stay in this mode for hours or until I physically shut it off.

I would like to stop a specific update from installing, but am having trouble doing that. I can stop all updates from being downloaded by making a registry alteration, but this keeps me from downloading any updates.

Today I received a prompt to install 4 important updates. These seemed to download OK (total 32MB). I don't know what exactly was included in these updates, I just clicked on Install and carried on with other tasks and operations.
After a little while I got the usual prompt to restart my computer to finish installing updates. I did this, the shutting down message appeared followed by 'Keep your PC plugged in until this is done. Installing update 3 of 4'.
This was at 1536GMT. It's now 2223GMT in my timezone and I've still got thie same message displayed with no sign of any further progress. Should I disconnect the main power supply regardless of the message, or is there another step to take? I vaguely recall this happening when I had Vista, which I eventually abandoned.

I have a Windows 8.1 which I upgraded from my purchased W-8.
Decided to order the Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack. Ordered online and installed.
Got Windows Activation screen saying Windows can't activate right now. Try activating later. If that doesn't work, contact support.
The Current product key is the new one I just received.
Entering my old W-8 key doesn't work.

After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.
Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.
I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

I just reinstalled 8 on a ssd and tried to install 8.1 from the store but it says i need to update windows first. I tried running windows update but i get an error saying "Windows could not search for new updates" error code 80240440. I tried everything I could find online and nothing seems to work. I tried restarting windows update, i tried turning off firewall, I tried reinstalling windows again and selecting "check for updates online" before installing from the cd, i tried running a check disk, and there is absolutely no program installed on the drive other than windows.

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.
I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.
I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".
I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).
Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

I am currently having an issue on my laptop at the moment where it's stuck in an infinite loop of 'reverting changes' after having tried to update and failed at 30%, I have done some reading at ways to boot into safe mode however it would appear windows 8 doesn't give me the chance.
I do not have a copy of my original windows 8 disc and am at a loss!
I have tried spamming F4, F8, F10 buttons and none are allowing me to enter boot mode.

So some background. I had issues with being able to install ANYTHING from an MSI file. Then I wasn't able to install any updates from Windows Update. I then reinstalled Windows, and am now facing the same issue after a few days. I would rather not reinstall yet again.
I tried doing System Restore, but it just hangs. Windows Installer hangs on "preparing to install".

I just bought new Asus Vivotab Smart Windows 8 tablet, after the very first windows update it failed to install some of the updates, and then after the reboot I am now stuck with the message "Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes".
It never gets any further than this, it never reverts, I have left it running for an entire day and have restarted several times.
This is a tablet, so there is no keyboard so I cannot press any F keys to get into recovery mode, and no CD to boot from etc.

I don't see any option to hide the updates which you don't want to install. In windows 7, one can simply right click and choose hide the update, but no such thing in windows 8.1.

I'm using Windows 8 Professional (got it from MSDNAA as soon as it appeared there ) and it seems to me that Windows 8 doesn't really shut down properly. I attached an image taken with Snipping Tool and it showed that the CPU up-time is 4 days etc etc..
The inconsistency here is, I just booted up my laptop few minutes ago. I did shut down my laptop properly every time. The only explanation here is that this 4 days ago was the day when I placed my battery back into the laptop.
But the laptop supposed to shut down PROPERLY right?

For the past 2 weeks (approximately), when I click "Shut Down" on my Win 8 laptop, nothing happens. If I click "Sleep," it goes to sleep right away, but it will not shut down. I see by the forum posts that my problem isn't unique. I have tried all three methods described in the post: [URL] .... - all to no avail. I have also tried Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and unchecked Turn on fast start up as other posts have suggested.
In Method 2 described in the post above, I ran sfc /scannow and ended up with the following result:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in C:/Windows/Logs/CBS/cbs.log. (I tried to attach the file but it's 15MB, too large).
My Win 8 machine is new (only a few months old) and my system specs are attached also. It was shutting down fine, I have a feeling this happened during a Windows Update.
