Security :: Running Malwarebytes In Win 8.1

Dec 1, 2013

I realize that the Pro version of Malwarebytes should not be running on Windows 8 if you have Windows Defender running. But am I correct in understanding that there will be no problem with the free version of Malwarebytes since it does not have a firewall?

Security :: MalwareBytes Does Not Run After Installation In Windows 8

Dec 23, 2013

I had to restore the Windows 8 the Factory image after a crash. I then went about installing my third-party programs. After installing the free mbam-setup-1.75.0.1300.exe I tried to run it and I got the message (with the path) that mbam.exe not found and I should retype the name and try again.

The program sub-folder and all the files including mbam.exe are in the Program Files (x86) Folder and even the Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts are there. I get the same message from everywhere when I try and run the program. I have tried all the usual routines of installing a freshly downloaded version etc but to no avail.

Earlier the Setup program was getting installed and running fine. I had first updated to Windows 8.1 before installing the third-party programs.

Security :: Program Keeps Requesting Confirmation Before Running?

Mar 23, 2013

Each time I run my backup program (SynchBack SE) I get the following message;

"Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer",

which I always say 'Yes' to.

Now, I understand this is a security feature, and I think I can probably inhibit this by changing the User Access Controls (UAC). However, what I really want to do is to confirm this program can run, and not be asked again, whereas I think the UAC is a more global setting. Is there a solution to this that won't mean tweaking the UAC level?

The reason why I am wary about tweaking the UAC level is because I 'think' this will be system wide, and I don't want to reduce security for all users on my PC.

Or, maybe I have just got UAC all wrong, I am not clear TBH on all the in's and out's of UAC.

After Doing Malwarebytes Anti Malware Test - Computer Freezing / Crashing?

Sep 15, 2014

After doing a malwarebytes anti malware test, my computer freezes/crashes every now and then. I'm not sure if its just coincidence but I'm a bit worried.

When the freeze starts nothing is clickable except windows explorer, then when i click on it that freezes as well. If I have a youtube video playing the sound will continue but not the video and sometimes the sound will stop.

Also when it freezes and I press ctrl+alt+delete nothing happens. And sometime after clicking things and it not responding the stuff I clicked will open when the freeze stops.

It it someting to do with my CPU, RAM or hard drive?

I have two hard drives btw. A ssd which has my OS and some games and programs on. And an old 1Tb normal hard drive for more programs, games etc.

Maintenance :: Running Out Of Memory When Running Overnight

Jun 22, 2014

First let me say, I rarely leave my 8.1 system running all night as I generally switch off before bed.

On the FEW occasions I leave the system running all night I always get the "Your computer is low on memory" warning.

For instance, yesterday my software RAID mirror was "Re-synchronizing" and I wanted it to complete syncing so I left it running. NOTHING was running except Disk Manager. I closed down everything else. No browser, no Skype, no directory utility, no paint, no uTorrent....

Sure enough when I woke up this morning there it was....

A few days ago I wanted a couple of torrents to keep downloading so I kept the desktop running. Again NOTHING else was running and in the morning there it was....

I have 16Gb of memory and my pagefile.sys is 42Gb. My OS disc is a 250Gb SSD. I have set my system to hibernate after 5 hours idle. I have set the screen/display to sleep after 30 minutes.

The system isn't asleep when I wake as moving the mouse immediately brings the display back on line. Checking Task Manager shows NO memory hogs.

What I suspect is after 5 hours the hibernation process denies access to memory requests or something?

The strange thing is millions of people on 8.1 must leave their systems running all night but I have seen no mention of this behaviour.

You choose x86 or x64 and go from there.

What's not mentioned, is that you can use the same links to update Windows Defender on Windows 8 as well.

I've been doing this for quite some time without issues. So the two programs are very much alike.

Security :: Can Change Local Security Policy Entries From RegEdit?

Mar 8, 2014

Which registry settings should I change to set the top two default Windows rules back to 'Unrestricted' ?

I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)

Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!

Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up

I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:

Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.

Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...

Security :: Temporary Disabling IE Content Security Blocking

Mar 28, 2014

I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).

How To Get Windows 8 Running Properly On MacBook Pro

Sep 15, 2011

how to get Windows 8 running properly on a MacBook Pro (or in general any Mac that supports BootCamp).

Everything runs kind of smoothly, except since Apple doesn't "Officially Support" Windows 8, out of the gate I wasn't able to get a few things working. Unfortunately, the driver disc that Apple provides to you doesn't install officially because I was "not running Windows 7."

I am using a MacBook Pro, early 2010. 2.4ghz Core2Duo, 4gb of RAM and a 1tb HDD.

Not working
Volume Buttons
Brightness Buttons
Eject button
2-Finger Scroll

I'll update later once I am out of class, but those are some things I've run into.

Win 8 Was Running So Poorly - It Showed As A Raw Disk J?

Nov 10, 2013

Having no fun with the Win 8.1 - call it downgrade. Had problems from the start. I've had Win 7 for some time. I bought Win 8 and an SSD and did an upgrade from 7-8 on the SSD with no problems using Paragon Migrate OS to SSD - worked very well. This left me with Win 7 on a 320 gig hard drive and Win 8 on an SSD. I didn't touch Win 7 after that until the Win 8.1 downgrade which left me with an unstable Win 8 OS. When trying to boot into 8.1 I was getting very slow response, odd startup of some programs, lockups, etc. I tried to run safe mode (recovery) in Win 8 to see what I could do to fix, but it was very hard to get into and not much use when I finally did. The last time I tried to get into safe mode in 8.1 the computer booted up into safe mode for Windows 7. Since then restarts are in Win 7, not 8. The boot into 7 rearranged the drive letters and the Win 8 SSD became an NTFS (Healthy active, primary partition), no boot, page file, etc. C: = Win 7, E: = Win 8. Since then I have not tried to start Win 8 - not sure how. (See attachment).

having Win 7 . I would like to keep it available and updated while also having Win 8 as an option.

Is there a decent start-up software for choosing which system to boot up?

Is there a way for me to repair Win 8 (disk E) so that it is bootable? The third question is whether or not I can boot up a Linux OS (Cinnamon) onto a partition on a disk and play around with it - with the same boot up software?

Perhaps a related problem was that an external storage drive had some how become unusable during the upgrade - since repaired with chkdsk /f (Gparted error log attached). I don't know if this was the primary reason that Win 8 was running so poorly. Before it was repaired it showed as a Raw disk J: and E: Win 8 disk was not shown in Computer or Disk Management. When J: was shut down E: became visible again. All disk show now that J: was fixed with chkdsk.

Maintenance :: CPU Running At 80% When Computer Is Idling

Sep 11, 2013

I have had some issues with my laptop running very hot even when it's not used. I figured out that it was because of my cpu running at around 80% all the time. This of course, is causing a cpu idle temp of around 65c and a quickly depleted battery.

The computer (a Sony VAIO SVS1513C5E) have two modes (Stamina and speed) that switches between silence mode (low effect and integrated graphics) and high performance mode (hybrid graphics, high performance). CPU temp is at 65c when running in 'silence' mode (can't say that it is very silent, given the fanspeed to cool down the computer). High performance increases this to 75c (still idling!), and increases the fan volume by quite a lot.

I did scan it with windows defender, without anything coming up. I am also running process explorer at the moment, it says that system is using ~20% cpu, services.exe a tad above 20% and around 20% idle. The rest of the processes are using a total of around 2-3%, leaving 37% (?). The 20% from services.exe seems to be mostly svchost and some intel bluethoot driver (that I will be uninstalling, as I dont use bluethoot anyways).

Saving Space On SSD Machine Running Win 8

Dec 12, 2013

I have an SSD machine with 90 Gbytes of storage running at home, not connected to server. I use a USB drive for extra capacity but I seldom have much spare space on C: as I have SQL server and Visual Studio installed. Looking at storage use on C: I notice 1.7 Gbytes of files in C:UsersSimonAppDataRoaming. Can I delete these as I use my login on only one computer at home? Roaming profiles are not enabled.

There are also 1.9 GBytes of files on C:UsersAll Users. I believe All Users is used for creating profiles for new users and All Users contains folders corresponding to those in C:Programs and C:Programs (x86). Can I delete any folders with programs that wouldn't be needed by any new accounts I might create?
