Running Windows 8.1 and apps are not working. They were perfectly fine this morning, then later today, every one of them, except like two that I know of, IE and the Store. Other than that, music, Facebook, twitter, dropbox, etc. they're not working.
I've refreshed my Windows 8, didn't fix it. I've also done sfc /scannow and it found nothing wrong.
I tried today for the first time to update my apps in Windows Store. But with no success at all. Every single one came out with an error: "Windows firewall service is not running"
No, it is not running, because I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed. So what now? Do I have to deactivate Kaspersky and activate Windows firewall just to update my apps? What do I then do when Windows 8.1 becomes available in Windows Store in a few days?
I have an ASUS s550C running windows 8 and my HDMI to my 32" RCA flatscreen doesn't work anymore. The cable works fine with the xbox, correct tv modes, but now as soon as I plug in the HDMI to the Ultrabook the Ultrabooks screen goes black and the tv screen says unsupported. I have tried extended, 2nd screen only, and all screen settings, 720/1080I etc.
I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 8.1 and the issue that Im facing is that suddenly sound stops working, most likely when playing youtube videos. This is what I've done so far:
Reinstalling drivers (microsoft, realtek, conexant) Upgraded to 8.1 (I had this issue as after a few weeks I installed windows 8, never happened on 7) HDMI and headphones outputs are working just fine.
When I was on windows 8 I could make the speakers work by just clicking on disable and re-enable from the sound properties, If I disabled the microphone the speakers started to work again which I have no idea why that used to happen. Now on 8.1 the only way to make them work is by closing the lid or restarting the laptop which is pretty annoying.
These are the current (default settings) I have played with them but nothing fix the issue.
I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 8.1 Pro. I was on cs portable with a USB mouse and I pressed a few keys and the mouse stopped to work. It came up with the message that it was not recognized. I tried to uninstall the USB drivers, but had no luck. This problem has been going on for a few days. I tried other solutions but they didn't seem to work. The red LED light was on.
Okay i already tried running sfc/scannow but live tries are not working, they are working only on the mail, the all used to work, the weather and news but now live tiles are not working?
Whenever I open a Metro app like Weather, even after closing it using the red cross in the upper right corner (feature added in 8.1 Update), the app will keep running in the background forcing me to end it with Task Manager. Is this normal?
Running a family PC, with different user login's. Users is leaving the PC even sometimes after logoff not putting the PC to sleep or switching on the PC, do not log in and leaves the PC running. (training of users, no result).
Task: Ensure the PC goes to sleep within reasonable time.
Sleep settings does not seem to work after user logoff. (3 different login profiles) all set to same standard "balanced" scheme. The standard scheme is changed/set to HDD off 20min, sleep 20 min, hibernate 240min.
A small app is called by screen saver logs the user off after 15 min inactivity with a 1 min warning screen. All working fine with logoff etc.
I had hoped the adjusted standard settings "balanced" was cascaded to the "logoff" state, but it seems to run it's own life after logoff, meaning the PC keeps running (screen goes black as set in the "standard scheme) however the power settings is not putting it to sleep, it takes hours...
The Ethernet card "hard wire" is set to not wake, the wireless adapter is disabled, lock screen is disabled.
Have also tried in the registry to set all default user schemes to = 5 (this was working in XP after logoff) but seems to have no effect in Windows 8. I'm not having Windows 8 pro, so GPO is not an option.
Here comes the questions: Case, after logoff I want the PC to sleep after 20 min. Where is the settings for "logoff" state (i.e. no user logged in and after user logoff) in the registry How to changed the setting in the registry, meaning Dword, name, value for 20 min to sleep
Having problem using this software in 8.1 but it runs on my 7 machines very well the problem is it does not show the status of the 5v rail (in pic) I have uninstalled it and reinstalled but to no avail.
I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.
But,After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working. When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002.
So, at this point, only a few of my apps are working due to the simple fact that I was able to re-install them, but the others I can't re-install because of this error message.
FIRST SOLUTION:I found a thread online that someone had created with a simple fix to about 2-3 errors on the tiles. This is a simple powershell script to re-register some apps so that they can run again. This worked to fix my app store app and setting, but only that apps. The app update is still not working.
I have another windows live ID, and when I log in with that Id, all my apps works normally! I am out of sorts now.
I've got a new Windows 8.1 laptop, and I've been installing the usual suspects. Most of these work, but I have had trouble with two:
dropboxinstaller.exe chromesetup.exe
With both of these, upon running I don't even get the warning asking whether I want to allow the file to modify my computer. All that happens is that the cursor flicks to the "waiting" blue circle for a second or two, then... nothing.
I'm currently running Windows 8.1 and recently I took a look at my Resource Monitor and noticed a process called numbers.exe with the description "Numbers". It showed it as running in the background but in a suspended state. As I've never seen that process before, I decided to search it up and it came up with some results related to a trojan / rootkit. But this trojan / rootkit was namely referred to as <random numbers>.exe (for example 123456789.exe); nothing indicating specifically the process "numbers.exe".
I did a bit of digging in the associated handles and noticed that some of the files were related to the default Windows Calculator App, which I have currently pinned to my Start. When I unpinned it from the Start the process was gone. so I'm assuming it is the process for the calculator. But because of a trojan incident I had a few years back, I'm a bit paranoid based of the searches that popped up for numbers.exe. So this "numbers.exe" is a legitimate process? Who also has the default calculator pinned to their start have this process running as "suspended"?
For no reason, all my apps on win 8.1 won't open. They open for a few seconds, then dissapear, leaving me back at my desktop. I have done all updates and whatnot, but to no avail.
I use windows 8.1 and have enabled boot-to-desktop.
Every time after booting into windows, when I check task manager, there are some metro apps already running in the background, like reading list, onenote and reader.
Is there a way to stop metro apps from automatically running at startup?
EDIT: Ok, the issue resolved itself. I don't know how, but they are not running in the background anymore, except for store which is obvious.
I suppose they were doing some sort of scanning or indexing maybe.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
A few weeks ago, after using the computer for some time, (The problem doesn't start until a few hours later) my programs won't start up unless running as administrator. All programs. Including notepad. (not sure about cmd) I have not done a full scan on my computer because it estimates more than one day and the estimated time still extends.
I set up my 8.1 installation, played with all the apps, got used to how M$ wants the future to be...and this morning when I turned my PC on, it said it was installing some updates. No biggie.
Now today I am having a bad time with some of the Apps. Skype for example(though this seems to be a known issue?) loads for about 4 seconds then CTS(CrashToStart). Photos will let me look around for about ten seconds, then CTS. Reading List, CTS soon as it looks loaded.
I have tried re-installing the apps, to no avail. or a hotfix will be released, because a refresh would be a sucky option just for it to break again.
I've installed Quicken 2004 on Windows 8.1 in compatibility mode for Windows XP 3 to run as administrator. Everything seems to work well. All my data appears to have been restored including Home Inventory. I can download bank data.
Automatic backup works. I tested this by changing the system date to trigger the backup.
The infuriating thing is I cannot do a manual backup from the file menu. The dialogue box opens. I can complete the relevant fields but when I click OK the program freezes. There are no error messages.
Not sure if this is a Windows issue e.g. permissions or Quicken issue e.g looking for a file that doesn't exist. I have checked the 'Ready for archive' box of the folders, sub-folders, and files property boxes.
Are there any settings in Win 8.1 that I need to change to allow a program to write to a drive when it is running in compatibility mode for Windows XP 3 as administrator?
Maybe a very few of you have read my topic on Vistaforums. I have "only" 5 operating systems on PC.
XPSP3 Vista SP2 x64 7 SP1 x64 8 Pro x64 Ubuntu 12.10
After Microsoft released the 8.1, I knew that the time of Windows 8 is gone. If the PC is better than a Pentium D it does not worth bothering with it. But I installed this 8 in May, becuse there was no working bootloader on my PC, and that was the easiest way to have one. Also it turned out that Metro isn't that bad, it's fast and good. Also D3D optimizations like for BF4.
But Windows 8 won't get IE11, cannot run Asphalt8, no further support, etc...
So I would like to do the upgrade. So the question is, a new install with Windows 8.1, and having 6 OS's, or formatting Windows 8 partition and installing 8.1?
XP is necessary for a huge load of apps from the early 2000's, it's the only 32bit OS on my pc, and some hardware only supports this or older OS's.
Vista: backup OS, if I mess up everything, and native DX10.0
7: daily usage, mostly supported with drives for todays phone flashing
8: FAST, so I use it a lot.
But there are incompatibilities. Some phone flashers won't work on 8, and some games are glitchy too (today's discovery is PoP Sands of Time). So I wouldn't delete XP and 7 for any money.
So, is it necessary to keep Windows 8? Is there anything that works only on 8 (like DX10 was on vista)? Because if there is an app, that doesn't work on 8.1, but runs well on 7 and 8, I won't keep Windows 8.
write a comment with the name of the application, and I will decide. Currently, I'm planning to delete Windows 8 and install 8.1 if I will have time.
I recently Installed Windows 8 Professional on my Toshiba Laptop. Now the problem is my Hotmail isn't syncing correctly. However when I tried to add my google account to the mail app it worked flawlessly ,everything showed .
I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 and my apps notifications are not working any more I did everything went into pc settings, I checked each individual app and everything is on.
i got windows 8 professional 64bit on my asus k53jc i7 quad 2.20 8gb ram 1gb graphic nvidia geforce 520mx + intel hd 300
i installed 3-4 days ago windows 8 but i dont get it why apps , photo , store , bing deskopt or anything else witch are on the start dont work u just click them they dont start just stay in backround i really dont get it.
I've used Keytweak in the past with Win7. Now I find it's not working as expected in Windows 8. Changes are not being adopted by the registry and at reboot the app does not reflect the key remap change. Is there a trick to get this utility behaving as expected?

When I want to install an app from the Windows Store, I get a message with error code: 0x80070032. I have tried everything I could find on the internet to solve this, but nothing works.
I have a brandnew HP Pavilion laptop, on which Windows 8 was pre-installed.
First let me say, I rarely leave my 8.1 system running all night as I generally switch off before bed.
On the FEW occasions I leave the system running all night I always get the "Your computer is low on memory" warning.
For instance, yesterday my software RAID mirror was "Re-synchronizing" and I wanted it to complete syncing so I left it running. NOTHING was running except Disk Manager. I closed down everything else. No browser, no Skype, no directory utility, no paint, no uTorrent....
Sure enough when I woke up this morning there it was....
A few days ago I wanted a couple of torrents to keep downloading so I kept the desktop running. Again NOTHING else was running and in the morning there it was....
I have 16Gb of memory and my pagefile.sys is 42Gb. My OS disc is a 250Gb SSD. I have set my system to hibernate after 5 hours idle. I have set the screen/display to sleep after 30 minutes.
The system isn't asleep when I wake as moving the mouse immediately brings the display back on line. Checking Task Manager shows NO memory hogs.
What I suspect is after 5 hours the hibernation process denies access to memory requests or something?
The strange thing is millions of people on 8.1 must leave their systems running all night but I have seen no mention of this behaviour.
I installed Classic Shell on my Windows 8.1 laptop and i kinda didn't like it too much so i uninstalled it. But it hasn't uninstalled completely, when i try running setup again, and choosing the 'remove' option it doesn't uninstall! Anyways, that isn't really the problem, the thing is, when i press 'ctrl alt del', it doesn't go to task manager, i tried right clicking on the start icon and clicking on task manager but that didn't work either, so i had to go to start menu and search for task manager and then finally it came up.
I'm wondering if there is any correlation between classic shell and 'ctrl al del' not working, any way of getting it to work again.
Since a few weeks for some reason I cannot access some programs (like MS Word), it just says that "the operating system is not presently configured to run this application". It doesn't show up as a registry item either same as some other programs.
Now my problem is that I cannot install a new version, nor openoffice, or anything else for that matter that uses windows installer.
I've checked if the service and subservice was running and they were, I've tried SFC /scannow and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but they both didn't fix the problem ( did fix some corruptions though).
What happens with the installer is basically it doesn't do anything. It just sits at initializing forever and doesn't install anything at all. Currently cannot install any programs but don't want to reinstall windows since I have a lot of programs and settings I don't want to lose.
