A definition update for Malwarebytes causes Trojan.Donloader.ED false positive on a massive amount of files that it can disable your system. It was corrected with new update. It hit me this afternoon and sure glad I had a recent Macrium Refresh image.
View 9 RepliesA McAfee technician had to remote control my laptop to get rid of a 'Trial period' of McAfee. She asked me if she could remove 'Malwarebytes' which I had downloaded. She said it contravenes with McAfee's security. Is this a fact? Or maybe they don't like competition!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had to restore the Windows 8 the Factory image after a crash. I then went about installing my third-party programs. After installing the free mbam-setup-1.75.0.1300.exe I tried to run it and I got the message (with the path) that mbam.exe not found and I should retype the name and try again.
The program sub-folder and all the files including mbam.exe are in the Program Files (x86) Folder and even the Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts are there. I get the same message from everywhere when I try and run the program. I have tried all the usual routines of installing a freshly downloaded version etc but to no avail.
Earlier the Setup program was getting installed and running fine. I had first updated to Windows 8.1 before installing the third-party programs.
I ususally use my friends computer because mine is broken. I know his password so I can access his computer. Recently he changed it and now I typed the wrong password. Is that power button in the bottom left corner only shutdown or when pressing it it will give me power options?
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust noticed that on Windows 8.1 my Paging file is set to 16GB, I have this set to system managed on a separate drive. PC has 16GB of RAM and an SSD for the OS.
Seems to be quite large and recall when previously set to system manage the paging file was only about 2GB.
My laptop [HP G6 2293sa] is about a month old and had Windows 8 preinstalled. Since set up, the system has had a massive spike in memory about 5 mins after start up. It lasts for just over a minute. Which process is causing it. It doesn't matter whether 'fast boot' is on or off ... every time I start up it happens 5 mins later. And lasts just over a minute. I've taken a screenshot of same. I removed preinstalled Norton [using their uninstall tool] just after set up and following a disaster with Avast [using a massive amount of memory] I'm now running Windows Defender as my AV. I've turned Windows Auto update off ... though on or off, it didn't make any difference tbh.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI move a lot of files around on my computer between different files and between hard drives for organization purposes (running Win8) and about 1/3 of them lately will display this error when I attempt to drag and drop from one folder to another "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" but these files are NOT opened or being used by another program...it's completely random and if I try again after about 15 minutes or so then I will magically be able to drag/drop the files...
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter doing a malwarebytes anti malware test, my computer freezes/crashes every now and then. I'm not sure if its just coincidence but I'm a bit worried.
When the freeze starts nothing is clickable except windows explorer, then when i click on it that freezes as well. If I have a youtube video playing the sound will continue but not the video and sometimes the sound will stop.
Also when it freezes and I press ctrl+alt+delete nothing happens. And sometime after clicking things and it not responding the stuff I clicked will open when the freeze stops.
It it someting to do with my CPU, RAM or hard drive?
I have two hard drives btw. A ssd which has my OS and some games and programs on. And an old 1Tb normal hard drive for more programs, games etc.
After last weeks updates my UAC keeps resetting after a few hours, i set it to Never Notify and after a while it goes back to normal.
I'm running Windows 8 Enterprise.
It was running normally before the update.
No 3rd party programs were installed, the OS remained unchanged, just the updates.
I am a new Windows 8.1 user, having installed it on a new system build I did a couple of weeks ago. Prior to this, I was running Windows 7 and used Avast for my anti-virus, and Defender for the rest. I understand with Windows 8, Defender is really what MS Security Essentials used to be, which I had heard was pretty good.
I am somewhat of an advanced user, not an IT Pro by any means but have been a Windows user for many years and have never minded digging in and tuning it to my preferences.
So with this new build and Windows 8.1, I am thinking I will just stick with Defender for all my AV and Security needs. I am curious, is there a way to set Defender to download and install it's new Definitions updates on it's own? Without having that selected for all my windows updates? I prefer having Windows Update notify me when there are new udpates and letting me choose what and when to install them. That is one thing I liked about using Avast, it did that on it's own on pretty much a daily basis and I did not have to manually download and install them.
I took a look in Defender's settings and did not see one where I could set it to do those updates for it automatically.
I just did the update from 8 to 8.1. One of the screens asked how I wanted to receive the security code.
I took the default option of a phone call.
I didn't get the call, so I changed it to the email option, and checked the email on another computer.
I didn't get the email either, so I clicked on "I can't do this right now".
So how do I get the code, and how do I do it later? Other than that it looks like the update went ok. I don't know why it came up with the system recover option turned off, and I had to change my setting so that I didn't have to enter a password at start up.
Today, when I opened the windows defender i saw my PC status at risk and when i tried to update it's virus definitions I couldn't complete, it says network connection but i could connect to website download anything without any interruption. I even tried to update virus definitions through windows update control panel but it was of no use. I had installed MSE on windows 7(i have a dual booting) . Did this action affect my windows 8 OS and how do i get rid of it.

I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)
Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!
Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up
I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:
Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.
Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...
I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).

o.k. long story short before installing 8.1.1 in my real environment i tested it out extensively in vm. i found out that if you get past a certain point with the windows updates bitdefender will not install, if you install bd prior to a certain point it installs and works great even after you do the rest of the windows updates. How to get it installed and working correctly in a fully updated 8.1.1? i have eset smart security in, but i'd rather have my bitdefender.
I am running 8.1, and firefox 25. I can't download or run Avast, or download any executables, suddenly. I lowered my security settings to Medium and added Avast to the firewall permissions, but to no avail. My download settings were already at "prompt" anyway, so there's something deeper I can't figure out. I'm a reasonably competent generalist but not super computer smart.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro 64bit on a new rig I just built. I am currently trying to change UAC, but if I click on Change User Account Control Settings, nothing happens. Same thing if I click any of the links with the admin shield next to it. My account says local account administrator and I have installed programs as administrator just fine. I have also tried the .reg files posted, but it didn't seem to do anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo, the device uses an eMMC for the drive. Is it possible to set the ATA security password on the drive, just like you can for regular hard drives? I don't see an option in the BIOS to set it. Perhaps the option is there somewhere though.
I basically want to protect the data on the tablet. I don't think the BIOS administrator/user password provides sufficient security since that password can be reset and the data can then be accessed. I don't want to use software encryption since I don't want to slow the device down.
To clarify. Not BitLocker. Again, because people will talk about how BitLocker is only available in Windows 8 Pro, I am talking about EFS (Encrypting File System). Different than BitLocker.
Ok, so in previous versions of Windows to encrypt a file/folder you simply needed to right-click > properties > (general tab) click advanced > check "encrypt contents to secure data" and the deed was done. I know that you cannot simultaneously encrypt and compress files/folders, so that's not the problem. I just want to know how to turn on that feature becasue EFS offered some great functionality that I would like to have back.
I am using the regular (no-pro) version of Windows 8 on a single hard drive, no storage pool strangeness going on here.
Again; no, the files/folders are not compressed and I am not talking about BitLocker.

It works fine, but I still get a User Account Control notification when I'm trying to launch the apps even though the app it's technically asking about is Microsoft Windows Based Script Host!
Is there anyway I can stop the notification for this program without disabling the thing all together?
I too got rid of Norton, but I still have another a/v suite on my Toshiba laptop. Should Windows Defender be activated? A tech person at the company told me there would be no conflict, but that it's up to me.
In general, is it a good idea to have both running?
My windows 8.1 keeps on changeing the UAC setting back to 'do not notify' without my interaction. Every time I want to reboot I need to open UAC first and then adjust the setting back up.
What could be causing this... couple of notes below:
