After last weeks updates my UAC keeps resetting after a few hours, i set it to Never Notify and after a while it goes back to normal.
I'm running Windows 8 Enterprise.
It was running normally before the update.
No 3rd party programs were installed, the OS remained unchanged, just the updates.
i was just wondering if there has been an updated theme patch version witch fixes the blinking black screen after applying windows updates ?
Everytime i use any theme patcher on win 8 x64 it works fine until i do windows updates then it restarts ant the screen just blinks and its completely black after boot screen.
I'm looking for an app that patch the DLL (for themes) To patch the files, and not loaded into memory
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a new Windows 8.1 user, having installed it on a new system build I did a couple of weeks ago. Prior to this, I was running Windows 7 and used Avast for my anti-virus, and Defender for the rest. I understand with Windows 8, Defender is really what MS Security Essentials used to be, which I had heard was pretty good.
I am somewhat of an advanced user, not an IT Pro by any means but have been a Windows user for many years and have never minded digging in and tuning it to my preferences.
So with this new build and Windows 8.1, I am thinking I will just stick with Defender for all my AV and Security needs. I am curious, is there a way to set Defender to download and install it's new Definitions updates on it's own? Without having that selected for all my windows updates? I prefer having Windows Update notify me when there are new udpates and letting me choose what and when to install them. That is one thing I liked about using Avast, it did that on it's own on pretty much a daily basis and I did not have to manually download and install them.
I took a look in Defender's settings and did not see one where I could set it to do those updates for it automatically.
I just did the update from 8 to 8.1. One of the screens asked how I wanted to receive the security code.
I took the default option of a phone call.
I didn't get the call, so I changed it to the email option, and checked the email on another computer.
I didn't get the email either, so I clicked on "I can't do this right now".
So how do I get the code, and how do I do it later? Other than that it looks like the update went ok. I don't know why it came up with the system recover option turned off, and I had to change my setting so that I didn't have to enter a password at start up.
Today, when I opened the windows defender i saw my PC status at risk and when i tried to update it's virus definitions I couldn't complete, it says network connection but i could connect to website download anything without any interruption. I even tried to update virus definitions through windows update control panel but it was of no use. I had installed MSE on windows 7(i have a dual booting) . Did this action affect my windows 8 OS and how do i get rid of it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed the 8.1 patch today and shortly after the mouse disappeared from my screen completely (I have a laptop with a touch pad). I tried going into task manager as just going in and cancelling used to solve this problem before installing the patch but this no longer works. I also tried rebooting (switching off then on again) but this didn't work and the computer didn't even reboot; just reopened my session exactly where I left off even when I waited ten minutes before switching the on switch again. I have temporarily solved this problem with a usb mouse borrowed from a family member but my family member needs it back (and I also would prefer to use the touchpad).
I should add here that I didn't want to do the installation when it started happening and while I meant to press the "default settings" option, I think I went with "customise settings" by accident. I just said ok to everything as I had a deadline and needed computer access. Could I have pressed "turn touch pad off" and if so how do I change this?
My notebook has a Win 8 OEM key in UEFI. After wiping my hard disc I want to install Win 8 retail instead of OEM version.
Because this is not possible with stored OEM Win 8 key I want to boot with a Win 7 BootCD and patch the UEFI with a Win 8 retail serial key.
For that I need a Program like SLIC which accomplish this task.
But where do I get this SLIC tool?
is there another way to enter a new Win 8 key into UEFI from Win 7?
So when I play BF4, the game started crashing after the latest BF4 patch. I noticed that if I run it at 4.5 or higher BF4 crashes. That is the only program with an issue. My temps are fine, and can run 4.7 stable except for BF4. So now I am playing some BF4 lately, so have gone to 4.2.

Windows 8. It removes anything I have saved from my desktop, leaves my main folders blank and it also resets all of the programs I have on my account. The files do seem to be safe from within the computer/Local Disk ( C : ) /users folder and I do not have separate accounts for anyone.How do I prevent it from resetting itself every time I start up my computer?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, this started happening after I upgraded from 4770k to 4790k (or at least I think it started then, can't exactly remember), I keep getting BSoDs or blackout resets (Screen goes black and then resets the entire computer), I'm not sure what's causing this.
I've re-installed my Windows and it still does that (I re-install my programs immediately every time I re-install my Windows, so program could still be an issue), this is driving me crazy cause this is happening almost every day.
And yes, I have updated my BIOS before even installing that new processor, and I'm sure that they're compatible. (It's an ASUS Z87-PRO by the way.)
I did an SFC /scannow, nothing unusual pops up.
I did an overnight memtest (memtest86+), no errors (7 passes?).
I've reseated the RAM, still does that.
Every single time I reboot my system my mouse fails to register in the system. I have to physically unplug it and plug it back in for Windows 8.1 to register it. Once I do that I have literally no issues at all..... How to fix this so it doesn't happen every single time I reboot?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using a USB headset with a microphone (Logitech G35). my microphone levels are too high. My microphone picks up almost everything, especially keyboard- and mouseclicks which people have complained about. Whenever I try to adjust the microphone levels to something lower, for example 18dB instead of 24dB, it will reset back to 24dB almost as soon as I start to speak. I have tried to change the levels both in Windows Sound Settings and in the driver for the headset. I have tried multiple dB values, not only the one in my example.
I am using Windows 8.1.
Every 20 or so minutes I have to keep going into my mouse settings to change the Verticle Scroll speed back up to 4, up from the default 1. This problem has been occurring since I got this laptop in november last year, and I've been up for 2 and a half hours trying to finally fix this tedious problem, I'm starting to lose hope and it's getting to the point where it makes me not want to even get on the computer. My Dell Touchpad program that came with the computer is always turned off when the mouse is plugged in, so that can't be why.
There are two ways for me to change the scroll speed, by going into the Windows 8 PC Settings>PC & Devices>Mouse & Touchpad, and the mouse properties that are in the control panel. When I change the Mouse & Touchpad settings they change the settings in the mouse properties but not vice-versa.
There is no KH-whatever file in my startup list.
Synaptics drivers for touchpad are up to date, as is the mouse driver.
My mouse is a Engage Optical Mouse, I've had it for about 2 years and I never had a problem with it on my last computer. My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron M531R-5535.
I don't want to use the DNS servers of my ISP and I don't know how many times I changed over to third party DNS
servers now.
But 2 weeks later when it occurs to me to check, they are almost always back to Auto, i.e. the ISPs.
Why does this happen and how can I prevent it?
I just installed Windows 8, and each time I boot up my resolution reverts to 800x600 even though my native is 1680x1050. I have to constantly change it after login. I hope this is a simple fix, this is the first time I'm using Windows 8 as my normal OS.
View 9 Replies View RelatedClient with advent DT2412 failed motherboard. old motherboard MSI B75M A-P45 (discontinued). replaced with Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Socket 1155 M-ATX Motherboard.
Client confirms no backup and insisting that I we try not to lose data. Managed to get the desktop up and running as same chipset on new mobo. client now complaining that computer drops out randomly. I've asked the client to back up there data and stated that we will have to complete a fresh re-install due to possible driver issues.
If we run the factory reset disks from advent will it not load the same chipset and drivers for the MSI? thus causing it to drop out again? If I install a fresh copy of windows 8 where do i get the product key from?
Okay so this has happened several times now and I can't find an solution, I just got finished installking several extensions and changed some settings to Google Chrome, but when I close it, it like resets the browser to default every time and none of them are saved? This is the only web browser this is happening on and its strange?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Kubuntu 13.10 and Windows 8.1 installed on separate drives on my computer. Dual-booting through the Linux bootloader works fine, as in I can boot either Windows 8.1 or Linux without incident. However, whenever I boot Windows, it resets itself to the highest boot priority, and always re-adds a boot entry if I remove it. My question is, how can I get it to stop doing this? I can temporarily fix it through Linux, but I'd really like to stop it permanently, as it's starting to become a pain.
EDIT: It turns out my problem was related to a duplicate entry for Ubuntu. If you're having this problem and have tried to install Linux a couple of times, check to make sure that you only have one entry for it.

What's not mentioned, is that you can use the same links to update Windows Defender on Windows 8 as well.

I set up some rules in the local security policy some time ago when there was fuss in the news about the cryptolocker virus. They looked a lot like the rules above (I found that screenshot online as I can't take one myself, read on..)
Today I was installing some software that wanted access to the areas I restricted. I temporarily disabled the rules, then re-enabled them. Being a dumbass I also set the top two rules (which are Windows default rules) to Disallowed!
Over the following 10 minutes various aspects of my PC stopped working, telling me that the local security policy prevented access. I couldn't even get into the Control Panel or the Local Security Policy screen to change it back, once I realised what I had done. I rebooted the machine - it won't come back up
I've tried a system restore by booting from the installer on USB (which did not work, it grumbled that it could not restore due a file locked by anti-virus) so I think I've got two options:
Refresh my system using the Windows 8 tools - but I suspect that might leave the LSP rules in place, as it retains my settings & preferences.Hand edit the registry to correct the settings.
Option 2 is looking best, I can get into RegEdit from the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to edit and what to set it to? This is on Windows 8.1 Pro...
I came to some trouble installing CorelDraw software which apparently uses for it's setup launcher web active container performed by IE core. If I launch setup, the setup windows is evidently noninitialized showing the top warning band about active content being blocked for security reasons. Even allowing active content by selecting from the top bar menu doesn't make the setup continue. So now I'd need to temporarily bypass all IE's security checks, ie. allow everything. What I already did was browsing the security tab in IE options and allowing most of the choices in branches ActiveX controls and plugin modules + Scripting (Local Intranet). On Advanced tab I have checked in Security branch Allow execution of active content from CD discs on this computer + Allow execution of active content from files on this computer. Nothing of these affecting the installer to run (ie. I still see then active content blocking bar).

o.k. long story short before installing 8.1.1 in my real environment i tested it out extensively in vm. i found out that if you get past a certain point with the windows updates bitdefender will not install, if you install bd prior to a certain point it installs and works great even after you do the rest of the windows updates. How to get it installed and working correctly in a fully updated 8.1.1? i have eset smart security in, but i'd rather have my bitdefender.
I am running 8.1, and firefox 25. I can't download or run Avast, or download any executables, suddenly. I lowered my security settings to Medium and added Avast to the firewall permissions, but to no avail. My download settings were already at "prompt" anyway, so there's something deeper I can't figure out. I'm a reasonably competent generalist but not super computer smart.
