Random Rapid Screen Flicker?

Mar 20, 2014

why my monitor screen flickers, like it is having convulsions, from one window to another...it happens for about 5-30 seconds at a time randomly throughout my work day..and can occur when I am browsing, typing in outlook, or typing in word. I have switched monitors, cables, and it still occurs. The problem occurred with a previus laptop (ACER using windows 7) which crashed in Nov. It is now happening again with a new Lenovo desktop using windows 8.1. I bought a new backup battery and that didn't make a difference. I changed outlets and that didn't make a difference.

Random Startup Lockups When Using Rapid Boot

Aug 6, 2013

My hardware specs are available here:

Blue Phantom | MegaGames

By default Windows has Faster starting on

My UEFI also has a rapid boot function which I set to on (But not ultra rapid which requires a GPT formatted HDD/SSD)

However on two occassions this has caused the system to lock when attempting to start Windows. Both times it won't make it past the turning circles.

Restarting, entering UEFI and disabling rapid boot allows Windows to get to the loading screen and then automatically system restore to an earlier time.

Two sets of circumstances have set this chain of events off:

1) Enabling hibernate - apparently my motherboard doesn't like it
2) Using Memtest 3.50 (an older version no longer available) - This happened yesterday.

I would suggest the memtest error is because:

Windows stores bootfiles on the ram for fast startup 3 Year old version of mem test starts up and tests ram, upsetting the boot files
Windows fails to boot.

that's just a hunch as to why it didn't work.

Anyway, long story short I'm occasionally getting lockups and forced system restores to keep windows running whenever I have enabled rapid boot and circumstances are unusual.

I can and have disabled rapid boot but I'd be interested to know what exactly might be causing the problem. Is it just an older incompatible version of memtest and a motherboard which doesn't like to hibernate or a bigger problem?

Screen Flicker Right After Logon In 8.1

Jul 31, 2014

Recently, I noticed that every time after I log into Windows 8.1 with my password, the screen flickers for like a second. What might have changed to cause this. I haven't installed anything new before the problem occurred.

I do remember that I was fiddling with some display options (changing items sizes) but I did restore them back to the default options. Just updated my nvidia drivers but that didn't solve the issue either.

Win. 8.1 Pro x64bit
i5 3570K stock speed
nVidia GTX 660Ti with 340.52 WHQL driver

Windows 8.1 Update - Blank Flicker Occurs When Open And Close Programs

How big this new 8.1 update is and can it be downloaded as an iso? Also, does it contain any driver updates. I installed Win 8 on a Vista machine and it runs well, except for an annoying blank flicker that occurs when I open and close programs. Tried both a Vista and Win7 video driver but made no difference.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 - Intel Rapid Start And GP Mode?

Nov 15, 2012

Installed Windows 8 in GPT-mode, and the manual from Intel on how to make the hibernate-partition, does not seem to work, when the SSD is not in MBR-mode. In diskpart I can create the partition, but I can't set it to ID=84 when in GPT-mode. Diskpart returns an error, saying that it is not legal setting.

Intel Rapid Start works really fast in my Windows 7 MBR installation, so I would really like to have it in Windows 8 too.

Random Preparing Windows Screen After 3 Months Of Usage?

May 29, 2013

I installed Windows 8 on my computer in January of this year.

I have a slight issue with my computer, which I am worried will turn into something huge. Recently, after booting up my windows 8 computer, right before the tile interface screen (I have my preferences set so that it skips the log-on screen) the background color turns blue (it is normally red) and instead of logging-on it says 'preparing windows.' It takes a little less than 5 minutes, and then when it is done, it is as though I have made a new user account. The default screen saver is on, there are hardly any tiles, and NONE of my files are to be found ANYWHERE, with the exception of the account icon, which I can only see if I look at the little square on the top right hand corner of the tile interface screen; it is not in the pictures library (that is empty).

The first time this happened I completely freaked out, but after rebooting my normal account was just fine. It was as though nothing had happened.

This has happened 3 times now, and while right now it is no real issue, because all I have to do is reboot, I am afraid that it will turn into something that really is a problem.

Computer specs:
I built my computer, so I would really like to keep it working
-OS Windows 8
-my motherboard is an Asus F1A75-M PRO
-my processor is an AMD A8-3850 APU (2.49 GHz)
-64-bit OS and processor
-4 GB of RAM

P.S -- I do have another user account, which is not personalized AT ALL, since I almost NEVER use it, but even that has programs that I have installed on my main account, and has files of mine, so my computer is definitely not logging on to another account by accident.

Hardware Drivers :: Random Black Screen / Crash?

Sep 15, 2014

I recently built my first custom PC. Here is a link to the build on PCPartPicker: AMD FX-6300, Sapphire Radeon R9 270, Corsair 300R - Ordered build updated - ajthemacboy's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker

Since then I have had random black screen issues. At one point I reinstalled the OS, and they still occur. You may notice the R9 270 needs a 450W power supply at the least.

At first look you would think this is the problem, but it's not. Before the R9 270 I had an EVGA 750 Ti, which only uses like 60 watts of power or something, as well as a CM430W power supply, and the black screen issues still occurred.

First I returned the power supply for a CS450M, black screen still occurred. Then I returned the 750Ti for an r9 270, and the issue still occurs.

If it's not the graphics card, power supply, or OS, what should I do?

The dump file is attached. It blames NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have no clue what this is or how to fix it.

Icon Flicker Introduced Due Icon Refresh With Win+d Key

Apr 30, 2013

I notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.

I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".

It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.

This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.

Random Crashes In Windows 8

Jun 14, 2014

I'm having random freezes on my Windows 8.1 64bit computer.

I built a custom PC last year and everything is working well until it is around 6-10 months old. Random freezes started occuring. I tried doing reformat but the problem does not go away. Figuring that it may be the problem of Windows 7, I upgraded to windows 8.1 and also added a SSD to use it as a primary drive. 1 week into windows 8.1 and SSD the problem started occuring again, sometimes even when I'm just browsing the internet without viewing videos.

-windows 7+1TB HDD(OS), having a crash
-upgraded to windows 8.1+128GB SSD (OS)+1TB HDD(secondary drive), having a crash

I turned file paging off on my SSD and allocated 8GB of virtual memory to my secondary drive. When the crash happens, no BSOD occurs, my screen just freezes and I'm forced to do a hard reset. When there is sound playing while the crash happens, the sound will keep looping until I did a hard reset.

Debugging :: Random BSODs On New PC - Always Different

Jul 31, 2014

I bought a new custom built PC from EveTech around 2 months ago for $1900.00. I installed windows 8.1 on it, and have just been receiving ENDLESS BSODs. At first I found out that Windows 8.1 does have issues with BSOD, so I installed Windows 8, hoping this would have been the solution.

I started doing some investigations on how to read BSODs, and initially I thought it was because of outdated drivers, bad memory etc, because all the posts that I read said that this is MOSTLY the cause of BSODs. I installed every program under the sun to search my drivers, and all stated that everything is updated...

Going further in the investigations, I thought it was because of overclocked CPU and GPU hardware, but even after resetting it back to factory default, I am still having this issue.

The absolute worst part of this, is that the BSODs are never the same - they are constantly throwing a new .sys file stating that "this is the problem".

Win 8 Random Restart Loop

Aug 20, 2013

A couple months ago I got a new desktop [URL] .....

Love it, works great, did what I needed to do, except blasted windows 8. Classic shell works wonders, but it's still not the same, in particular with troubleshooting issues. Thus is where my issue lies this time (As I have either fixed or found workarounds for other small issues).

Randomly my computer will "have an error occur" and restart. Sometimes it fixes it after once (although not usually) sometimes I have to do a system restore (and today that didn't even work.)

Once when it restarted it went to a black screen and never reloaded the OS today. Finally, randomly, it just worked. What irritates me is that I did a system restore from a few days ago and it didn't fix it, so now I have to redo my settings changes on some programs and such.

A system refresh, both times I tried it (First a few days after I got the desktop, I just assumed it was a bad first install) and once not too long ago) fixes the problem. At least temporarily.

I JUST disabled driver signing (because it annoys me and wouldn't start anyways) and restart after failure (which it still restart a couple times which is even more annoying) and hybrid sleep has been disabled for a while since it has been known to cause problems and I don't use it anyways. I hadn't had the problem since I did that for about a week until a couple days ago so I assumed it fixed it.... but, alas no dice.

Computer Is Being Shut Down At Random?

It can be anywhere from one minute to one hour or maybe not at all. My power setting or set to NEVER on both monitor and Sleep. I'm wondering if it can be my Video card that is shutting down my computer. I know Video cards, and RAM that can stop a computer cold. Or could it be something in Windows 8.

Debugging :: Random BSODs With Four Different Types Already

Oct 5, 2013

I had a windows 7 previously installed upgraded it to windows 8 a couple of months ago. Since then, I'm getting random BSODs with errors including:

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
REFERENCE_BY_POINTER
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Previously with win7, I had a Windows 8 dually installed. Back then, I used to get the first error only, very frequently, and only in Windows 8. I had ignored them because I had Windows 8 installed only for testing purposes, and I thought they would go away. But now, they just keep popping up, with the reference by pointer error popping up 4 damn times in a row. And may I also add just how slow my PC gets before a BSOD?

I've tried looking them up, but the solutions seem to involve the removal of different drivers. So I thought of just creating a new thread instead. I have a few games installed and I do overclock my pc sometimes, but the recent BSOD (irql) took place when I was watching a video on youtube. I am attaching the SF grab and a bluescreenview report (the 5th error in it is the dpc watchdog violation).

This might be completely irrelevant, but I'll mention it anyway. The previous Windows 8 is still installed. I tried deleting it from msconfig, and was successful, but the files are still there and it seems to be the 'system partition' right now. See my previous thread for more info.

Happened again. Uploading SF grab with bluescreenview report.

Happened a few more times. I'm trying to keep the logs updated. Another thing; my PC now seems to be very slow and sometimes when a crash occurs, all the online accounts I'm logged into (Facebook, Eight Forums, etc.) automatically logout. This was also the case in my earlier Windows 8 installation. And the latest crash appears to be of a different driver.

Audio :: Getting Random Volume Fluctuations

Jun 28, 2013

I've been having random volume fluctuations with things like youtube and iheart radio, as well as the occasional games. I've been searching the forums for a solution but the closest i can find is on the W7 forums, (Volume level continuously changes - Windows 7 Forums), which is the same problem I'm having with windows 8 pro. The last post on that thread is from September of 2012, so really I'm just curious if any new info or solutions have been made available. Like the op in that thread I as well disabled my communications and turned of the enhancements. I also uninstalled my audio drivers, restarted, and when it rebuilt the drivers they were newer than the ones i had. (Realtek 6.2.9200.16497, current driver) Yet still the problem persists. Team Speak 3 is the only web voice chat service i use, but that's only on when running a game.

Debugging :: Random BSOD In Windows 8?

Oct 11, 2013

Recently I've experienced random BSOD's in Windows 8. Although my computer know-how is limited at best, I knew it was best to upgraded my pc in steps. The first week I installed a SSD (with a fresh install of Windows 8 on it) and ran without any problems. A week later I installed 16 gigs of (new) ram (with the SSD) and everything ran fine.

The problems started two weeks later. I haven't made any changes to my pc or driver upgrades since then. If I idle in windows everything works fine. The same is true when running Office or browsing the internet. BSOD's occur when:

- Playing games (modern or old), either after 5 minutes or after 3 hours (seems very random but frequent);

- When wathing a HD youtube movie (BSOD's when doing this seem very rare though);
