Win 8 Random Restart Loop
Aug 20, 2013
A couple months ago I got a new desktop [URL] .....
Love it, works great, did what I needed to do, except blasted windows 8. Classic shell works wonders, but it's still not the same, in particular with troubleshooting issues. Thus is where my issue lies this time (As I have either fixed or found workarounds for other small issues).
Randomly my computer will "have an error occur" and restart. Sometimes it fixes it after once (although not usually) sometimes I have to do a system restore (and today that didn't even work.)
Once when it restarted it went to a black screen and never reloaded the OS today. Finally, randomly, it just worked. What irritates me is that I did a system restore from a few days ago and it didn't fix it, so now I have to redo my settings changes on some programs and such.
A system refresh, both times I tried it (First a few days after I got the desktop, I just assumed it was a bad first install) and once not too long ago) fixes the problem. At least temporarily.
I JUST disabled driver signing (because it annoys me and wouldn't start anyways) and restart after failure (which it still restart a couple times which is even more annoying) and hybrid sleep has been disabled for a while since it has been known to cause problems and I don't use it anyways. I hadn't had the problem since I did that for about a week until a couple days ago so I assumed it fixed it.... but, alas no dice.

Windows Action Center displays this error: Restart to repair drive errors
We found errors on a drive. To repair these errors and prevent loss of data, restart your PC now. The repair could take a while to complete.
The restart completes (doing very rapid checks), and after a minute or so Action Center displays the same error again. This happens every time I start the computer. Sometimes the computer boots straight to the Start screen, and sometimes it boots to a blue screen with the option of sending a report to Microsoft before completing the boot. Sometimes it sends a report with no action required.
I have checked the hard drive using PC Checkup with MyDell, and with TuneUp Utilities, and no errors are reported. Using CHKDSK C: /f /r /x does not complete, but gets stuck at 13%.
I have also used chkdsk to check the two USB external drives that I use, and no errors are found.

I don't know why but it has randomly started doing this in this order-
1. I turn it on, it does the normal start up screen of "Toshiba" and the loading animation underneath.
2. After a long time of waiting it takes me to a black screen. It stays that way for about 5 minutes, sometimes it does not do this and skips to:
3. Blue screen of death. It tells me it is going to restart and stays on this screen for less than a second. It repeats all 3 of these steps and does not stop.

So, since yesterday, Windows 8.1 tries to boot, then gets halfway through, shows a sad face for a second, and then restarts. It does this again and again. Just get the message "Failure configuring Windows updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer" then "Configuring Windows updates, 30% complete. Don't turn off your computer".
Then it boots, does the same thing again.
I've tried booting from the install media, but Refresh doesn't work, nor restarting in safe mode. Weirdly, pressing F2 to load BIOS, which always used to work, no longer does, it just continues trying to load Windows.
I've got an oldish PC, around 4/5 years old, with Windows 8 installed. Its got a fairly decent processor (at the time), a Q9550. Intel DP43TF motherboard.

I have two PCs..a Dell desktop and a Sony laptop(Purchased last June) yesterday I received the windows 8.1 updates so I installed them on my Dell desktop, no problems, it installed it and shut down the PC just fine and I am on it right now..but with the Sony laptop its nothing but problems..I installed the updates, it reboots just fine, but when I try shutting down the laptop it just goes back to a loop like it keeps on booting up then crashes then I have to restore it to August 9th and then it shuts down fine..so I am not sure what is going on..is there a particular update that is causing this I wont install it I just cant figure it out and I have done the system restore 3 times already..it will say I have 32 updates to install(including 1 optional one) so I just installed 30 of them to see if it would work and then I shut down the computer and same issue so something Im installing is causing this problem

I have an Asus laptop running on Windows 8 that starts up to the initial Asus logo for a minute and then restarts over and over. I've already tried pressing f8 and it does nothing so I cannot get anywhere to attempt to fix the problem.
Unfortunately I do not have the Windows disk so I'm looking for a solution outside of having to buy another one and wiping the hard drive to reinstall.

I have been using Windows 8 for over 1 year now. My computer took an update yesterday and tried to reboot. Now all I get is Windows is configuring your updates....goes from 0-30% and then it restarts. Keeps cycling forever.
I have an AMD quad core 9600, Gigabyte MB, 4GB ram, SSD drive.
I have tried to put in the Windows install/repair DVD and system restore says I need to restart choose an operating system. The repair option starts with diagnosing your PC then after 5 minutes it just restarts.
I can not due a fresh install....need my data.

I have a Samsung Ativ Book 4 (model number: np470r5e-k01ub). When I turned on my laptop today, I was prompted the message "scanning and repairing drive c". This has been going on for longer than I expected (about 6 hours and is stuck at 9%) and I am starting to get worried that something is seriously wrong. I have tried rebooting into safe mode but my keyboard isn't working. I have no way (that I know of) to restore to factory settings seeing as how my keyboard isn't working.

Just reinstalled windows 8, loaded everything up and had it perfect. Then I installed a windows update (could it have been 8.1?) and then my computer would not boot. It got stuck on the windows 8 logo with the circle just spinning. After I restart it tries to automatically repair but that doesn't work. I popped the Windows 8 disc in and tried to do a system restore using a restore point but it said "You need to select an OS. Please restart the system and select an OS". ??? I'm not dual booting! Windows 8 is the only OS installed!
Tried safe mode but the windows logo just hangs. Any possibilities to salvage this before doing yet ANOTHER reinstall or refresh or whatever.

I'm stuck in an automatic repair loop.
One suggestion has been to use a USB recovery disk but I can't create one now that I don't have access to Windows 8.

I've installed windows 8 just now and after I install drivers it gets stuck in an infinite reboot loop. The motherboard is an ASUS P8Z68-V.
I downloaded the correct drivers from the Asus website and I've also updated my BIOS to the latest version.
I had the problem when installing the chipset driver from the asus website. I skipped this one after a reinstall and then installed the rest. Seems like that wasn't the problem. I read around but couldn't get any decent answers. I tried a memtest86+ and that came back negative. Next i tried to set the SATA settings in BIOS to AHCI/RAID/IDE, that didn't work either.
Specs:
Intel Core I5 2500K
OCZ Vertex 3 60GB
6 GB Kingston DDR3 PC10600
ASus P8Z68-V
2 other regular SATA hdd's
I just did a refresh of my install, and this time it booted. This is the list of removed apps:

About a week ago I had the same exact problem. When I would turn on my pc it would try to diagnose my computer, repair it, and then fail and find no problem. I didn't find any solutions so I did a fresh install. Now its happening all over again. I originally thought the problem was my OS and re installing would fix my problem. Now I think that my SSD (OCZ Vertex 450) might be the problem.
I think that disabling automatic repair could also fix the problem, but I don't want to turn that off and cause another potential problem if it wont stop the boot loop. I also have a hard drive which I could install windows on if I need to, but I am not sure my SSD is the problem and if it cant be fixed. I haven't been downloading anything lately, and I formatted both my SSD and hard drive when I did a clean install so I don't think the problem is a virus.

So system was running perfectly (custom pc, win 8, samsung pro ssd), just did a clean install, fresh drivers, etc. It was running great! ASUS Sabertooth p67 mobo, latest bios.
Then out of the blue, mid game, i get a hard lock up stall. no blue screen but just lock up. shut down and when i reboot, bios didn't find my samsung ssd. unplugged my 2nd sata drive, booted again and now it found the samsung ssd however i got the "no disk found press ctl alt delete"
At this point i ran windows recovery console and did the bootrec fixboot, fixmbr, rebuildbcd, chkdsk party. everything said it was completed successfully.
Now when i boot however i am stuck in an auto repair loop and can never boot into windows 8.
I am thinking the crash is somewhat power supply and/or mobo related. new power supply is on the way and mobo being RMA'ed.

I was just on my computer about an hour ago when it froze up and I had to restart it.
Upon restarting it everything was normal until I ended up getting a screen w/ a loading bar saying "2.2 TB Infinity: Press any key to enter boot menu". At first I just let it load - which brought me to a black screen saying "No bootable device found, press any key to reset". And of course, when I pressed the key the computer reset. Then it happened again - this time I tried pressing a key - nothing. The loading bar stopped (like it was trying to bring up the boot menu) but nonetheless it brought me back to the black screen once again telling me to press a key to reset. Over and over again this happens - I tried inserting my Windows 8 CD; nothing.

So I my computer was really lagging one day so I restarted it like always. I turned it on, and it just has an infinite loop saying "Attempting repairs" and "Diagnosing your PC." I did get this one screen where it said "We need to restart your pc, click OK or click Advanced settings." I went to YouTube and I did what it said. It worked for every one else BUT me. I don't remember what I did but it didn't work. Now it's stuck at this loop of death. How to wipe it because I don't have anything on there I NEED.

It's only been two days since I got windows 8 Pro on my alienware. Recently I force shut down because it was not shutting down. And when I open it today it gives an error message saying that Automatic repair could not fix the problem.
The error code is: "D:WINDOWSSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt
I have tried everything. I have used command prompt and the following commands have also been tried.
bootrec/fixMMR
bootrec/fixboot
bootrec/rebuildbcd
chkdsk/r c:
chkdsk/r d:
Nothing has worked so far. I have tried everything except a fresh installation of windows. I have already taken a backup previously. I am a little apprehensive about formatting again.

I have a DV6T with Win 8 (Can't boot to any recovery disk; infinite crash loop - HP Support Forum - 2490191).
Windows told me that there was some corruption on the hard drive, and to reboot so it could solve the problem before losing any data.
Now I am in an infinite crash loop. It will try to boot windows, but just as soon as the first dot of the spinny wheel from the windows loading screen loads, it crashes. On the next boot, it said it's preparing to repair. Crashes again. Repeat...
I tried to boot into the HP recovery environment with F11. Looks like it just skips it and tries to boot Windows. Crashes.
I put in a Win 8 DVD, and try to boot off the DVD. I press a key at the "press any key to boot from DVD" prompt. I hear the DVD seek for a bit. Then it seems like it gives up and tries to boot Windows from the hard disk. Crashes.
I tried creating a Windows 8 recovery disk on USB from another Win 8 machine. Same drill.
I brought it into my office and tried a network boot to a recovery environment. I watched the loading bar, and when it reached the end, it crashed.
I'm stumped as to why it can't even boot to external media! The two things I've been able to boot into have been HP's onboard diagnostics (full, extended suite passed) and memtest86 (which passed).

Recently was running a backup program and suddenly I get the Windows 8 blue error screen (the one with the mocking '' icon) and system dies. I turn on and it seems to booting very slowly then it proceeds to do the pre login screen installation of updates. After half an hour or so and with updates on around 70%, system dies again. Now when I turn the machine on it appears to alternate between either hanging for ever on the Windows 8 loading screen or attempting to run an 'Automatic Repair' which invariably results in a blank screen and no fix.
Having read several 'Automatic Repair loop' posts on the net, it appears I need to load the recovery disc and run repair or restore programs from there. Of course the CD I made failed (crappy disc?) so I had to search my original licence email and use the provided link to download and create a new installation disc from a working machine. This disc loads and gives me the option to install Win 8 (presumably a fresh install with loss of files) or a troubleshoot menu. Running the automatic repair option results in a rather inane 'Couldn't do it' message and gives a blank path to a log file. The system restore option prompts me to 'Restart and select operating system before trying this' and i'm not sure how to do this as no such option is given at boot.

I included my .zip from the SF Diagnostic Tool.
I initially had a different processor and motherboard, but after changing both of those due to failures, everything is now working fine, until I do a restart. The main restart issue is that it gets stuck in an automatic repair loop until I can get to Safe Mode and then restarting from there somehow undoes the updates from Windows Update. If I keep those updates off, though, and just try to do a general restart, I get a BSOD Watchdog error. I'll include that log, just in case. It'll be in CBS.zip since I'm including the whole CBS folder from WindowsLogs. I'm really not sure what's wrong here.

I just purchased this Laptop yesterday, was installing programs and updates. The updates finished installing, asked me to restart the PC which I didn't do right away because I was installing programs. One of the programs asked me to reboot into safe mode so I did. When the PC rebooted, it said the updates were installed 100% but then says SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF "Updates failed...reverting changes". This loop as been going on for hours now.
I have had success in getting into the BIOS by pressing F12 upon startup. I tried changing the boot order to boot from my bootable startup repair DVD but it didn't work!

Working as a Mainframe programmer, I am automatically assumed to be an expert in all things IT and so a friend of the family has passed me a laptop to repair
What we have is the common Automatic Repair loop. The computer restarts, states "Preparing Automatic Repair" and "Diagnosis..." etc etc, and then does it all again. I cant get to the recovery menu or bios having tried different combinations of Shift F8, F12, F2.
I have found so far recommends booting from disk. Unfortunately, the owner of the laptop has no manual or box or any record whatsoever of the product key.
The laptop came with windows 8 preinstalled. I have tried to boot from a Windows 7 DVD, but it does not appear to be recognised and continues to do the automatic repair loop.

I know how to install windows but I am not able to do it before this problem,
1. Acer log on screen (Loading)
2. After loading, this will be the next screen, the system will restart
3. Then after restarting, this will be next (preparing automatic repair then diagnosing)
4. then after that, it will ask to restore the system
5. If you select restore, the system will restart then stuck in this screen
I am new in windows 8 and acer. I don't know what happen but before the system says its updating, then when I restart it this problem occurs.

So i have my friends Asus Laptop with Windows 8 running on it. Every time it strts up it displays the windows logo and after staring at a black screen for a few minutes it displays the message similar to Windows has encountered an error, (i'll update with the exact message when it pops up again) for a few seconds then immediately restarts to an asus logo with the message "Preparing automatic repair" and a boot animation, followed by a black screen, then it starts all over again. i can enter the bios settings by holding escape at startup but i'm not sure what i can do from there. is there anything besides getting the os on a flash drive that can be done?

My Gateway machine was performing a windows update when the neighbourhood power went out. It was off for four hours. When I went to turn the computer back on, it said automatic repair the diagnosing your pc.....that lasted about 5 hours! Then a blue screen with options came up. When I went to pick the advanced options, I clicked accidentally on the first one and it rebooted into the repair loop again. Since it takes so long for the diagnostic part, when the blue screen came up again it was likely the middle of the night.
I saw it at 7:00 am and tried to click the advanced options but the computer had gone to sleep by then and so once again it got rebooted into the loop. Gateway refused to support since the warranty is up. I can't find a Recovery disc image for 8.1 to put on a usb stick, and I'm back to trying to find answers on my 12 year old machine running XP. I tried the boot to safe mode with alt+F10 but can't get that to work either. If I knew how to force a reset to factory defaults without being able to get into windows I would. I've been doing this for 3 days now and I was just starting to like 8.1 too...

I've recently come into a problem booting up my laptop. Just downloaded the new nvidia drivers and rebooted my laptop. Now im getting the bsod and I can just make out that it says driver irql not less or equal before it reboots and goes through the whole process again. I've tried using an installation disc to try the automatic repair or whatever its called but after about 10 tries it keeps telling me windows couldn't fix the problem. Is there any chance of recovering what I had? I've tried a system restore but it keeps telling me I need to select my operating system (?).
