So I noticed a random file on my desktop called Thumbs. Screenshot: Screenshot by Lightshot I'm pretty sure it is safe, but where does it really belong at? Idk how it got moved or anything
I am haveing some issues with windows 8. One of them is when i start my computer my desktop icons are not appearing... I have done a couple of things such as the sfc/scannow on cmd however it didnt work and has some files that could not be fixed during the scan... How do i fix the rest of the corrupted file?
I recently installed Windows 8. I noticed that at some point the media tags stopped displaying in Windows Explorer for media files such as mp3 and m4b. I am talking about such tags as "title" , "bitrate" and "length" for audio files, for example. Previously this data always displayed for the same files.
This affects my collection of Music and Audio books which I am doing some housekeeping with. I can't sort mp3 and m4b them according to the tags that had been set in iTunes or mp3 tagger.
This has always worked previously and the tags have displayed fine.
I am using the "Detailed" viewing mode in Windows Explorer, but it is just empty in the columns where the tag should be, even for files which I know are tagged, and where the tag displayed previously, in Windows Explorer.
Here is what I found :
I ran sfc /scannow, but this did not solve the problem. I tried installing a shell extension called AudioShell135.exe which supposedly fixes problems with this, but it does not work for 64 bit OS. I read that a DLL called shmedia.dll is responsible for this functionality. Apparently some people re-registered this wisuccess when they had this problem. I did that, but it did not work either.
Could this be a regression in Win 8 or can others see the tag data for their mp3 files?
I've been experiencing BSOD for the past week, at first I thought it was my faulty HDD but I took it out and re install windows 8 but it seems to reoccur again.
Random stutters appears when playing video file and whenever i move the mouse it just fast forwards and will be sync to audio, and when i leave it again, after a few minutes it will be back..
I have been getting random BSOD and don't know how to read the dump file. I leave my PC on 24/7 and sometimes weeks go by without a BSOD. I have had 3 of them this week. I attached the zip folder.
I am using the mail app in Windows 8 fine on one laptop (Windows 8.1), but on my other one the program has started to just close in the middle of reading a mail, or when I click the delete mail button.
I quite often place files on my Windows 8 desktop while im working on various stuff and have a problem with icons I cant fix, for example: I have a number of PDF files currently on my desktop and my pdf program is foxit. I DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE PROGRAM ICON, just the icons of the files it makes. I had the same issue on win7 and i know I can change folder view options to "show icons and not thumbnails" but unfortunately that screws up my image icons.
In windows 7, "types" and "nirsoft files type manager" allowed you to change the file type icon from the thumbnail to whatever icon you wanted. These 2 progs plus another I've tried don't work in win 8pro?
I was able to right-click a shortcut to a file on my desktop, click properties then change the icon. Its not working like that now. The icon won't change. Also, I use to have an Icon changer and manager program years ago. Any new program today that will change and manage my icons?
I was deleting old unused folders on my Desktop when I ran into this wma file called "Untitled1" that doesn't play.
I remember one point in time it was useable and worked normally, but for some reason it won't now.
I just want this annoying file gone forever and I've been trying to search up the error code it keeps giving me (Error 0x80070057), but no such luck in solving my problem.
I also searched up "How to delete undeletable files" and tried some things out, but none of the ones that seemed closest to my problem worked out...
Here is a picture of the error pop-up window I get when trying to permanently delete the file or move it: [URL]
A user provided the OP with a Desktop.ink file, and nothing was said about what to do with the file that was provided. I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.
However when I run this, the server computer comes up with an error saying that remote desktop connection was interrupted. How can I cut the session off without getting the error message?
I am on my laptop at the moment and am trying to make a BIOS update stick for flashing my main desktop at home that has an Asus P8Z77-V board.
Now I have downloaded and saved both the BIOS utility - renamer and the BIOS version itself and both are zipped files.
I have tried using 7-zip to rename that BIOS file which the manual tells me I have to do but to get it to work when I use the 7-zip it goes to choose an app from the store. Now I have never fully understood zipping and unzipping files to be able to use the application and now this message has got me even more perplexed as to what to do!
I did try this at home on the main machine but I did go round in circles on that (7) machine and until I get the BIOS ready on the stick I cannot flash the BIOS on that main machine.
I just installed all the updates contained in 8.1 update 1. I like the way the taskbar pops up in Modern UI, but it seems inconsistent.
If I use the 'Start button' to switch to the Store, and I keep the mouse on the taskbar, the taskbar stays. If I move off it, it disappears. If I move the mouse back to the bottom of the screen, the majority of the time nothing happens. If I wiggle the mouse around at the bottom of the screen, after a while the taskbar appears. Sometimes, when I move off the taskbar, it doesn't disappear immediately.
Protected Operating System Files are appearing without uncheck hide Protected Operating System Files in Folder option:-
In my Local Disk C: System Volume Information is not hide when i check hide Protected Operating System Files in Folder option. How to assign Protected Operating System of this folder.
I just formatted & installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop. I'm getting a lot of BSODs.
All of them "Critical Structure Corruption", can't quite pin-point anything specific. I've been installing some programs I use, etc. Just now - it actually BSOD'ed while I was running the SF Diagnostic tool!
How to get rid yourself of the touch screen keyboard symbol in the bottom toolbar have tried several ideas but after restart this still appears, my reason for wanting to rid myself of this is I don`t have a touch screen so is of no use
As you can see in the picture when I open a pinned program it doesn't extend the icon but creates a new icon in the taskbar. This is not happening with all programs like Opera, but iTunes and Skype are both prone to this problem.
Every since I updated my 8.1 to update 1 I have this annoying bug, the taskbar miniatures stop appearing and instead i have this annoying tooltip with whatever program's name I hovered last, that insists in staying above all other windows:
The only way to fix it is rebooting my computer, but it just comes back after a while.
I haven't found any link to any open program, any way I can debug this to find out why this is happening? I'm close to formatting the computer because of this annoyance.
This account keeps on appearing on my New PC fresh out of the box. It is linked to a Norton program i removed.Still have Norton remains on my PC and it is really starting to tick me off.
I have tried deleting the Norton registry but it wont delete. I have even tried deleting the dat file of the 'baqhkcmvc local account' linked to ' %ProgramFiles(x86)%Norton Internet SecurityEngine20.0.0.136ccSvcHst.exe' but it still remains.
What the blue blazes is going on? With Vista and Win7 when i removed the bloat wear they never created accounts!
Sometimes when I am playing a game in fullscreen with the 360 controller, the mouse cursor will appear on the screen where I last left it. I have to jiggle the mouse and it will go away, but it comes back periodically. In games where I am using a mouse with a special look during the game, I can see flickers of the regular white windows mouse cursor. At first I thought it was just happening in Steam Big Picture Mode, but it is happening in all games.
The metro photo app (that comes with Windows 8) is showing photos on the live tiles that were deleted over a week ago.
I've turns lives tiles on and off. I've unpinned from the start screen and then re-pinned. I deleted personal info from the tiles from the settings screen. I've verified that the photos are not on my computer (photo app is only showing the computer and skydrive).
This morning when I turned on my PC, I noticed these 2 weird icons appearing in front of my two drives (local, and backup disks). The 2 icons were not there before? They look like the standard Microsoft User(s) icon, but why are they suddenly/randomly appearing?
Every time I click reply on an email in Outlook....I start getting pop-ups. Very annoying. I checked and have them disabled......but they are everywhere all the sudden. How do I get rid of them?
My friends were playing around with my old laptop which was an Acer aspire v5 with a core i3 by trying to guess my pin. No matter how many times they tried, it wouldn't lock or anything. I got that laptop replaced because it was malfunctioning. The replacement was practically the same model but with a core i5. Again, a friend tried to guess my pin but after a lot of tries, the pin entry box disappeared and got replaced by a password entry box.
I forgot my password because I rely too much on my pin which is shorter and easier to remember and the "sign-in options" button disappeared so I can't log in with my pin. I also can't log-in using my Microsoft account password which I changed. I'm pretty sure this isn't because of the model change. Oh and another detail is that my old laptop's OS was windows 8 when my friends played with it while my new one's OS is windows 8.1. I have really important files there and it's new so I haven't had time to back-up.
I like to use the desktop on my laptop rather than the tiles. I had no problem putting the browser on the desktop, but am a loss for putting the mail program there; there doesn't seem to be an executable file in the mail directory.
