However, what I want is to make sure the charm bar doesn't appear when I'm (right edge) swiping my touch screen.
When I try to save files from Google, Office 2013 or any program in Windows 8.1, I get a partial white screen and a "Not Responding" message on the Title Bar. The "Close Program" dialog box follows. So, I can't "Save As" to my computer.

I have an Acer Iconia W510 PC Tablet and I am talking about this error right here. [URL] ....
Okay, so this started appearing and I got a little worried. Each time it happens, I go through a restart and am just fine. So, I started to think about why it appeared. Then it happened more often. I'd say it pops up for no apparent reason every couple days, sometimes more frequent.
Every day, I do the following:
- Run Disk Cleanup
- Run Defrag
- Do a Manual Full System Scan with Norton Antivirus
I do all of these things and try to never download shady files, but it happens all the time. Sometimes it will be when I'm talking to someone on Skype (Text, not Video), or in an app like One Note or OK Cupid Touch.
It happens so frequently that I feel like there is something I'm missing.
Strange problem I am having with my windows 8.
I have an ASUS laptop running 8.0 which I am running with a second screen (dell monitor) connected via VGA. I have it set so the external monitor is the primary screen and the laptop is the secondary screen. It is set for a taskbar on each display, with the primary taskbar containing the shortcuts on the monitor, so when I click them they open there. It's been working fine for months.
So I switched it on today and my taskbar shortcuts have jumped to the taskbar on the second (laptop) screen, however my external display is still set as the primary and still has my desktop icons, trashcan etc but a blank taskbar (like the one that used to be on the secondary display)! When I click the shortcuts which are now on the taskbar of the laptop screen they open on the monitor. (ie the wrong screen) I disconnected the monitor, turned off the extended desktop and set it to just use the laptop screen. All my desktop icons moved to the laptop screen but the taskbar shortcuts vanished and I was left with a blank taskbar. If I plug the monitor in again and extend the desktop they reappear, but on the wrong screen. Even if I reboot without the external screen connected I get no shortcuts until I plug in the monitor and set it to extend the desktop. I have checked all the taskbar settings and they are all correct.
In this path C:UsersUser keeps appearing a file called agent.
As I saw it is a log file. What it is and what is creating it?
I delete it each time and keeps appearing.
So I noticed a random file on my desktop called Thumbs. Screenshot: Screenshot by Lightshot I'm pretty sure it is safe, but where does it really belong at? Idk how it got moved or anything

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed all the updates contained in 8.1 update 1. I like the way the taskbar pops up in Modern UI, but it seems inconsistent.
If I use the 'Start button' to switch to the Store, and I keep the mouse on the taskbar, the taskbar stays. If I move off it, it disappears. If I move the mouse back to the bottom of the screen, the majority of the time nothing happens. If I wiggle the mouse around at the bottom of the screen, after a while the taskbar appears. Sometimes, when I move off the taskbar, it doesn't disappear immediately.

I just formatted & installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop. I'm getting a lot of BSODs.
All of them "Critical Structure Corruption", can't quite pin-point anything specific. I've been installing some programs I use, etc.
Just now - it actually BSOD'ed while I was running the SF Diagnostic tool!
I have an Acer Aspire 5820, Core i3.
Regularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.
As you can see in the picture when I open a pinned program it doesn't extend the icon but creates a new icon in the taskbar. This is not happening with all programs like Opera, but iTunes and Skype are both prone to this problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedEvery since I updated my 8.1 to update 1 I have this annoying bug, the taskbar miniatures stop appearing and instead i have this annoying tooltip with whatever program's name I hovered last, that insists in staying above all other windows:
The only way to fix it is rebooting my computer, but it just comes back after a while.
I haven't found any link to any open program, any way I can debug this to find out why this is happening? I'm close to formatting the computer because of this annoyance.
This account keeps on appearing on my New PC fresh out of the box. It is linked to a Norton program i removed.Still have Norton remains on my PC and it is really starting to tick me off.
I have tried deleting the Norton registry but it wont delete. I have even tried deleting the dat file of the 'baqhkcmvc local account' linked to ' %ProgramFiles(x86)%Norton Internet SecurityEngine20.0.0.136ccSvcHst.exe' but it still remains.
What the blue blazes is going on? With Vista and Win7 when i removed the bloat wear they never created accounts!
Sometimes when I am playing a game in fullscreen with the 360 controller, the mouse cursor will appear on the screen where I last left it. I have to jiggle the mouse and it will go away, but it comes back periodically. In games where I am using a mouse with a special look during the game, I can see flickers of the regular white windows mouse cursor. At first I thought it was just happening in Steam Big Picture Mode, but it is happening in all games.

I've turns lives tiles on and off. I've unpinned from the start screen and then re-pinned. I deleted personal info from the tiles from the settings screen. I've verified that the photos are not on my computer (photo app is only showing the computer and skydrive).
This morning when I turned on my PC, I noticed these 2 weird icons appearing in front of my two drives (local, and backup disks). The 2 icons were not there before? They look like the standard Microsoft User(s) icon, but why are they suddenly/randomly appearing?
Here's an image of what I'm talking about.
I recently installed Windows 8. I noticed that at some point the media tags stopped displaying in Windows Explorer for media files such as mp3 and m4b. I am talking about such tags as "title" , "bitrate" and "length" for audio files, for example. Previously this data always displayed for the same files.
This affects my collection of Music and Audio books which I am doing some housekeeping with. I can't sort mp3 and m4b them according to the tags that had been set in iTunes or mp3 tagger.
This has always worked previously and the tags have displayed fine.
I am using the "Detailed" viewing mode in Windows Explorer, but it is just empty in the columns where the tag should be, even for files which I know are tagged, and where the tag displayed previously, in Windows Explorer.
Here is what I found :
I ran sfc /scannow, but this did not solve the problem. I tried installing a shell extension called AudioShell135.exe which supposedly fixes problems with this, but it does not work for 64 bit OS. I read that a DLL called shmedia.dll is responsible for this functionality. Apparently some people re-registered this wisuccess when they had this problem. I did that, but it did not work either.
Could this be a regression in Win 8 or can others see the tag data for their mp3 files?
Every time I click reply on an email in Outlook....I start getting pop-ups. Very annoying. I checked and have them disabled......but they are everywhere all the sudden. How do I get rid of them?

My friends were playing around with my old laptop which was an Acer aspire v5 with a core i3 by trying to guess my pin. No matter how many times they tried, it wouldn't lock or anything. I got that laptop replaced because it was malfunctioning. The replacement was practically the same model but with a core i5. Again, a friend tried to guess my pin but after a lot of tries, the pin entry box disappeared and got replaced by a password entry box.
I forgot my password because I rely too much on my pin which is shorter and easier to remember and the "sign-in options" button disappeared so I can't log in with my pin. I also can't log-in using my Microsoft account password which I changed. I'm pretty sure this isn't because of the model change. Oh and another detail is that my old laptop's OS was windows 8 when my friends played with it while my new one's OS is windows 8.1. I have really important files there and it's new so I haven't had time to back-up.
I'm a new Windows 8.1 user. Over the past two days two separate unknown network devices have appeared under 'This PC' in Windows Explorer (see screenshot below for the current one, along with its properties window). It appears people are able to access this computer - so a big problem!
As far as I can tell, all my security settings are in place (password on wireless network, all sharing disabled in Network and Sharing Centre, Windows Firewall is active, Windows Media Sharing is off).
How to close what I assume is a security loophole?
I have configured my desktop etc, just one little niggle, how to stop the Wecome window appearing, with the rotating wheel and profile image, can it be disabled
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with a few games that require a substantial amount of right-clicking during game play.
At some point, the mouse will be (in game) but hovering over the bottom left corner of the screen, at which point the Win-X menu launches and kicks me out of the game and back to desktop.
Is there anyway to forcibly disable this menu totally, or to make sure it doesn't activate during full screen games?
My friend happened to look in Devices and Printers, and in the Multimedia Devices section he had about 10 devices showing up that he never heard of. Six of them were computers with names that he had never heard of, the others were devices that we could not tell what they were.
I expect that these entries mean that at some time they were on the same network that he was on. Would that be correct?
If so, then it is a matter for concern because he never goes on public networks. He only goes on his network at home, and a network in a small office that he rents and shares with one other person. They have their own router with security set up on it, and that router is connected to an Ethernet jack that most likely goes to a switch on a network that also provides internet service to some other offices in the same building.
This computer is only about 2 months old, so these entries can't be too old.
When I looked at his computer, he was on his home network and all those other devices showed as Offline. I right clicked on them all and removed them. Would it be a good guess that perhaps the security of the network at his office was compromised, and those devices were connected to that network at some point?
I told him to monitor and see when they reappear, but he won't be back in that office for 2 weeks.
I keep finding files with names such as 3977C900 or similar on my system. The file type is called "File" and contains 0 kb. Why these are being created and how I can stop it ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the 8.1 Pro update on a fresh install of 8 Pro, I only entered the Power options one time: to change the "high performance" plan to never turn off the display. (as I usually do when setting up windows)
Today, I noticed my display turn off after a few minutes, so I went to see if something had changed my power plan. To my surprise, I have found that I now have over FIFTY copies of the High Performance Power plan! Many of them have different settings in minutes regarding when the display shuts off, and when the PC goes to sleep.
I can't delete any of them, as windows apparently considers them ALL as default plans. If I didn't create these plans, how did they get there? How can I delete them? I know deleting default power plans is dangerous and can cause errors so I just want to avoid another re-install of windows.
