PC Hangs At Post Screen When External HDD Is Attached

Aug 1, 2014

I'm running 8.1 on a newly purchased Acer TC-603. It's a dedicated machine for a networked video recording system. It runs Blue Iris, and records from about 25 IP cameras, storing the images on an external 4TB USB3.0 HDD.

Everything works as it should, until the system reboots or powers up. At that point, I get past the post screen, where it detects two SATA drives (the internal SSD and the internal DVD), but then hangs. It will not continue. I have to turn off the PC (or ctrl-alt-del) and pull the USB cable from the external drive before it will load into Windows 8.

I've tried various solutions (i.e. disable USB legacy support in BIOS), but nothing seems to be working.

I'm quite familiar with changing the boot order on all of my other PCs (W7). But on this machine, the options are limited to "Windows Boot Manager", removable media, LAN. But how does one tell the WBM to only look at the internal SATA connected drive, and ignore the USB drive?

I've never seen a BIOS that had Windows Boot Manager listed.

I've turned off secure boot. I've disabled legacy USB. I've disabled the Launch CMS feature (with then allowed the PC to detect USB thumbdrives on the f12 boot menu). But no matter what I do, I HAVE to remove the external HDD for the system to boot.

Needless to say, for a security-sensitive application, having a PC that relies on the HDD for storing video removed is not an option.

New Win 8 Pro Install Hangs At OS Selector Screen

Jun 2, 2013

The short story: I've got two Windows 8's on a machine: one OEM and one retail Pro which I just installed. The light-blue "OS Selector" screen which it boots to will hang after about 10 seconds. Within those 10 seconds, I can click to boot the OEM Windows 8, and it will boot fine. If I select the new retail Pro, it'll start booting that and then hang.

The longer story: I've got a Samsung Chronos7 laptop which has an OEM Windows 8 installed on it. For reasons which I won't go into, I got it into a strange state such that I can't use it for development work. So, I decided to install a fresh Windows 8 Pro retail next to the existing OEM version.

The install went fine. I could boot into the new Windows 8, and I started installing my development tools, mail client, Dropbox, etc. etc... and installed about Windows 48 updates (and I noticed that a few items in Device Manager which had, when I first looked, were unidentified, had disappeared from "Unidentified Hardware" and, presumably, were in their proper categories and without yellow problem flags).

Then, when I rebooted, I got the light-blue OS selector screen where I got to choose between the two Windows 8's (and then I heard an interesting "thump" from the speakers)... and the 30-second timer started counting down... until it got to 20 seconds, and then the machine just locked up. No mouse cursor movement, no hard-drive activity... nothing. Every time I boot it, it does that same thing: Thump from the speakers, clock ticks down to about 20 seconds, and then hangs.

Now, within those 10 seconds, I can click on either of the Windows 8 icons and get them booting. If I click on the OEM one, it'll launch fine (but it's still unusable for my development work, mind you). If I click on the new retail one, then it will hang at the little circling dots. If I start launching the new Windows 8 before the "speaker thump", I'll still hear it while Windows 8 is launching (before it hangs).

So... I'm figuring that something about the stock Windows 8 drivers is different from the OEM-packaged drivers, or something about the Windows updates on the new version has altered the boot loader, of all things. But now I'm kinda stuck, because I can't figure out how to boot into any sort of "Safe Mode" in the new Windows 8 install (I tried pressing F8 at just about every step of the boot process), so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to disable any hardware or roll back some drivers or restore to a previous restore point.

(Hanging at the light-blue OS selector) before? Is there a way for me to, perhaps, replace the Windows 8 boot files in the EFI System Partition with the "working" ones from the OEM install? At what point of the boot process am I supposed to be able to switch to Safe Mode?Is there a way to roll back driver or restore to a restore point if I have a Windows 8 Recovery CD or USB?

Windows 8 Install Hangs On Boot Screen?

Nov 16, 2013

upgrading my old PC to Windows 8, because I absolutely cannot afford to buy new, and I don't want to get caught out when Microsoft pull the plug on XP.

I have a copy of Windows 8 64 bit, which I want to try to get installed. My system has an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 which (according to the Intel website) supports Windows 8. However when I try to install Windows 8, I can boot from the CD but it doesn't go any further than the splash screen with the blue Windows 8 logo. I don't get any other information as to what the problem is.

What I have tried:

1. I checked that "Execute Disable" was turned on in my BIOS.
2. I unplugged all USB devices except Keyboard and Mouse
3. I tried booting from a USB DVD drive.

None of the above worked. I can't do an upgrade install from within Windows XP because it is 32 bit.

By the way I have included the log from the SysInfo utility in case it is useful:

System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2

Setup Installation :: Windows 8.1 Pro Hangs On Restart Screen

Jul 13, 2014

While I am not new to Windows 8, I am new to Windows 8.1 Pro. First I installed 8.1 Pro from a dvd, restarted it, no problems... then installed the updates, then when I restart, it hangs on restart screen.... So I have to reboot.

I got fed up doing that so I formatted the hard drive, installed windows 8 Pro, tested restarting....no problems... then updated, no restart hangup... then upgraded to 8.1 pro...still no restart hanging...

Installed all updates, still no hangup...installed Soundblaster drivers...still no restart issues...then installed Creative Console launcher....now it is back to hanging on restart screen....

If I uninstall Creative console software, it still sticks on restart screen....it's like windows got messed up by installing software but even tho I uninstalled, still have the restart screen hangup...

PC Suddenly Takes Forever To Boot Up - A Black Screen Hangs?

Aug 2, 2013

Recently my pc has taken forever to boot up. A black screen hangs there for about 5-9 minutes before opening up in Windows 8.

I thought a virus was there so did a full scan using Kaspersky Internet Security 2013, nothing found.

I haven't d/l'd any new software recently.

I have tried to upload music to my micro SD card from my iphone, but the icon in My Computer is not showing, not in Device manager either.

Don't know if they are related but the problem started just after the above incident.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Hangs / Freezes Splash Screen

Oct 31, 2012

I am having trouble installing windows 8 on my PC. So I slow burnt the ISO as I always do, and verified the contents. Now I always do a clean install never an upgrade. When I boot from DVD I get to the windows 8 logo and my DVD drive and hard drive seem to be loading files (although this edition has no load progress bar like the previous windows which is annoying) after several seconds i get the animation of the dots twisting but there's no activity?

The disc stops reading the hdd does nothing and the splash screen continuously mocks me it just doesn't get past that screen. After several attempts I thought I could try an upgrade from desktop instead. After a successful upgrade my pc reboots and gets stuck on that same splash screen it just doesn't want to get past that screen. I have looked all over the forums and googled various keywords to find others with this problem and have had no luck. It is noteworthy to mention that windows 7 runs perfectly with no problem on my PC and I am attempting to install the 32bit version I have tried widows 8 an windows 8 pro with no luck

My specs are as follows

HP Compact Presario SR1719UK
-AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.20ghz
-1GB DDR RAM
-ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series (Approx total memory is 287MB)

Setup Installation :: Win 8 CD Install Hangs On Black Screen After 1st Auto Reboot

Mar 13, 2014

This is a Windows 8 OEM CD install, on an i7 x64 system. I have tried this with both UEFI and legacy modes.

I cleaned the drive and allowed setup to partition and format how it sees fit on an Intel SSD.

The system copies files, sets them up and reboots.

The blue windows logo is up for a minute, then the screen (not the PC) power cycles (probably due to a resolution change). It hangs there on a black screen. There is a mouse cursor that responds and the num lock toggles on the kb, but nothing else. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing.

Browsers/Mail :: Windows 8 - Cannot Save JPG Photos Attached To Email

Jul 13, 2014

I am new to Windows 8. I emailed myself a .jpg photo as an email attachment (in yahoo email), from a different computer. When I try to save the attached photo to my own computer, the options are to save as "webpage complete" or as "HTML." I don't want to do either of those. I want to save it as a .jpg-format image in a folder of my choice on my computer.

Also, when I click on the attached photo, it opens in some unnamed Windows 8 imaging app that takes up the whole screen. I don't know what I am supposed to do with it (there are no explanations or options, or even any text that tells what the app is called or what it is supposed to be doing), and I can't get rid of it unless I press the keyboard key with the picture of a window on it, and then get back into my browser (Chrome). If I knew the name of this intrusive imaging app, maybe I could uninstall it, or at least reconfigure Windows 8 to make it save images in the format I want them in and in the folder where I want it to save them, so I can manipulate them the way I want to (in my case, with Paint Shop Pro).

Suddenly No POST And Clicking Sound

Oct 18, 2013

I installed Windows 8.1 earlier and had this (apparently common) watermark error on the desktop about SecureBoot having a problem.

I went into my BIOS, made sure it was enabled, and then set up some kind of "key" that the directions said to do. I clicked save and exit, and after that instead of booting into Windows, I'd be at a black screen, everything running inside my computer, and with my keyboard and mouse both turning on at the same time, then turning off at the exact same time 3-4 seconds later along with a quiet sort of clicking sound inside the computer. Over and over, looping endlessly.

I opened it up, checked connections, removed parts and tried booting with each thing moved. It only finally booted when I removed my graphics card and plugged my monitor into the onboard DVI port.

After that I shut down, put my graphics card back in, booted with the monitor still plugged into the onboard DVI, and it booted without issue. I then plugged the monitor back into the graphics card DVI port and rebooted. Went back to the clickly flashy no-POST cycle. After repeating this whole process a few times, I realized that when it's in that cycle, if I just plug the monitor into the onboard DVI port, I get the POST beep and everything boots up.

Eventually I just did some messing around in the BIOS, turned SecureBoot off as well as disabled onboard graphics and then booted the PC back up with the monitor in the graphics card DVI port. It boots fine now, I've rebooted 5-6 times now and it goes into Windows 8.1 no problem.

Debugging :: Multiple BSOD Errors On Startup - Pre / Post Factory Restore

May 24, 2014

So my laptop has been getting multiple BSOD errors during or shortly after startup. I let my roommate download and play WoW and Ventrillo. And the issues started shortly after, first with the game simply crashing and escalating into the computer itself not working correctly. I figured the best place to start since it didn't have much stuff on it was to just put my stuff I needed on a USB and do a factory reset. Which seemed to make no change. I have run memtest once for four passes and it found no errors.

I can remember a few of the errors I have been getting.
Bad Pool Header
Memory Management
IRQL not less or equal
Kernal Security Check Error/Failure
There was also one or two other memory related ones that I cant remember the exact wording of.

Hardware Drivers :: No Scanner - The Default Scanner Is Not Attached

Oct 6, 2013

Windows 8, of course; Brother MFC-7460DN Laser Printer. Paperport 14. Nothing I do will allow me to scan from that printer in Windows 8! However, I can print just fine.

Windows 7 machine, Brother MFC-7460DN Laser Printer. Paperport 14. Everything works just fine and dandy. I double checked just a little while ago, and scanning went off without a hitch.

The only difference between Paperport on the Win 7 machine and the Win 8 machine is that I bought Paperport 14 for the Win 8 machine and while waiting for it to arrive, I downloaded and installed the trial version.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Paperport and the printer multiple times, in the Brother Utilities I clicked on and installed the Scanner Utility and still no joy!

Here's a snip of the Installation Diagnostics. The Scanner (Driver) Port looks hinky to me, but what do I know?

And, yes, I could use my Brother MFC-J825 for scanning, but that would be a pain because of the printer's location. Or, I could run into another room and use the J5910, but that would be even more inconvenient. 'Sides, I hate to have something that just won't work in Windows 8.

Bottom line is that it does seem to be a Windows 8 issue, because when I check, Windows says it's all good. And it ain't!

Debugging :: Post-BSOD Factory Reset Downgrade From Windows 8 To Windows 7

Aug 3, 2014

I have a Samsung Series 5, 530U (the remaining digits I don't recall right now).

I purchased it from a digital superstore, like a market, rather than a regular PC store.

The device is set for Windows 7, although on purchase, I asked for Windows 8 to be installed.

Now, a BSOD has stopped me gaining access through refreshing, restarting, safe mode or any of the options available through the troubleshooting menu.

I retrieved my data using a SATA, and now wish to wipe the system of Windows 8, and avoid all the hassle it has brought me, returning to it's factory settings of W7.

I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.

Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?

If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?

All I want is to be able to use my own PC. I want Windows 8 cleared off and a reliable, original settings PC.

Windows 8.1 Hangs On Many Operations?

Mar 24, 2014

On my operations such as restarting and shutting down it hangs and does nothing (I understand this a common problem but I have tried 3 solutions I found on the internet and none of them worked.) I still have to turn off my computor by holding the power button......

It isn't just shutting down however. Often when I try to open a program I have downloaded from the internet (the latest example being a driver scanner) nothing happens.

To try and fix these issues, I attempted to refresh Windows 8. Again it did nothing. After clicking the Get Started button it just hung on Preparing. I only left it for about 20 minutes, I thought something would have happened by then. The same is true for reinstalling Windows.

Sometimes Windows 8 just hangs after I look around and change some of the DVD related settings in VirtualBox. My host system is ubuntu and the guest is Windows 8.

In the past I solved this by simply having VirtualBox send the shutdown power-off signal. Windows is ignoring the shutdown signal. Is there a Windows-centric way to fix this problem so that I can do a Windows-centric shutdown in the normal fashion or otherwise resolve or prevent this problem?

Maintenance :: PC Hangs In BIOS Can't Boot

Dec 20, 2013

When I turn the power on, my desktop PC (a Hewlett-Packard) goes into a BIOS startup routine that says "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then "Diagnosing Your PC" which has to finish before it will load Windows or any OS. I've seen it before, and usually it just takes a few seconds. But now it's stopping at the "Diagnosing" message and won't go any further. I turn it off and on, and it does the same thing again. I can get into the BIOS menus and choose other options like booting from another drive, recovery options, etc. but no matter what I choose it starts the BIOS over again and gets hung up on the "Diagnosing" step, so I can't boot ANYTHING.

Any way to bypass or break out of this BIOS startup loop so I can get to Windows?

WiFi Cutouts And Restart Hangs

Sep 15, 2014

The first one is the way that the wifi stops responding. It doesn't update in the notification area when it happens, to limited connectivity or any sort of warning like that. I can only tell when background downloads I have going are interrupted, but it seems really inconsistent why and when it happens. I've been unable to pinpoint and reduce the number of potential causes, not for a lack of trying. I disconnect from the network, and am unable to reconnect without first disabling and re-enabling the wifi adapter. This, however, presents the problem of the wifi adapter not re-enabling, and before that, the Network Sharing Center window in which I do it, will not update to the disabled state without a window refresh.

This leads to the other issue, is that when and only when this wifi issue happens, on restart, it hangs while showing the dark gray screen that says "Restarting..." with the spinning circle. The spinning of the circle happens continually, but will not advance further, even being left for close to an hour.

Every other wireless device (mobile phone, laptop, game consoles, etc) continue to function, so the network itself doesn't seem to be having an issue.

A thought I had, though I don't know how much water it may hold, is that something could be acting funny with a power saving/hibernate function, as I said, I've just been downloading when I notice it happening. I'll start a download, let it do it's business, continue on with my business elsewhere, and almost to no fail, a few hours later, upon returning and checking the current status of said downloads, I have to restart. I don't have it set to go to sleep/hibernate, but I'm not sure if there's other power save options in Windows 8, as this is the first desktop I've owned in recent memory and was surprised as is to see power options on it at all. It also seems like one of the network services could be acting strangely, with it not updating the notification area or adapter windows without manually forcing it.

I've scanned with Windows Defender, Malwarebytes and ran CCleaner, and nothing out of the ordinary was presented in the scan results.
