Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Not Auto Detecting Proxy Settings
Feb 4, 2014
So I'm rolling along the internet and I start noticing that the wifi bars in the lower corner have gone down to 4. My internet is running slower and when I log on and play online games, the local server which gave me a 50 ping is now jumped up to about 300-800 easily...
So I run trouble shooter (and malware bytes) and this gem pops up:
"Windows cannot automatically detect this network's proxy settings."
I run google chrome as my internet browser, but as of late Norton has been blocking chrome and my wife started using Internet Explorer...but when we disable Norton, Chrome works fine.

Something keeps changing my proxy settings. Every time I change it to "Automatically detect settings", something is changing it to "Use a proxy server for your LAN..."

The Windows App Store will not open. It spends a while thinking about it, then eventually times out. I would like to update to 8.1, but I think this is evidence of a bigger issue.
I think the real problem in my proxy settings in IE. The LAN settings have the Use Proxy Server permanently checked. No matter what I try, it wont uncheck. I have tried selecting the automatically detect settings box and putting in a dummy config. I ran Malware sweeps, ran virus sweeps, I removed any IE Add-ons. Reset IE. But it still wont let me uncheck that box..
It looks like there is a manual override within the Registry.

I don't want to use the DNS servers of my ISP and I don't know how many times I changed over to third party DNS
servers now.
But 2 weeks later when it occurs to me to check, they are almost always back to Auto, i.e. the ISPs.
Why does this happen and how can I prevent it?

Having Internet connection issues--sometimes I can connect, but only get "2 bars," other times nothing. I am using a wireless router, and have another computer connected to it, and I get the internet with no problems on the other one. Couldn't download TSG SysInfo on computer with problem.
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Home Premium
Dell All-In-One Desktop Computer
Intel Core i3-3240T CPU @2,90GHz 2.90 GHz
4 installed RAM
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Updated and Enabled
Steps I have taken: Troubleshooted connection, and received the following error: windows could not automatically detect network's proxy settings. Ran "network troubleshooter" and I think it reset the connection and said all was fine.

I'm in Window 8 on a Toshiba L855-S5112 Satellite laptop. It's an inexpensive laptop, which was most likely my first mistake.
But... My wireless sees nothing, and when I check the device manager for the network adapter info, it's enabled and it reports that it's working fine. the wifi switch is definitely set to on. With "show hidden devices" turned on, this is what I see for network adaptors:

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy.

I seem to recall that when you change the proxy settings for Internet Explorer, it's not just IE you are changing. IEs proxy settings are somehow the proxy settings for other apps and the OS as well. What connections are affected if I add a proxy in IE?

I prefer to keep my home WiFi network from public view by disabling the SSID broadcast, i.e "hiding" the network.
With two modem/routers (a Belkin Play Max F7D4401 ADSL modem/router and now a Cisco EPC2325 DOCSIS modem/router) on two computers (home-built desktop and Acer TM8172T notebook), after the initial connection Windows 8 Pro would not reconnect without tediously re-entering the SSID name and password. Once it does connect, it displays the original SSID name with a new one with an incrementally increasing appended number like:
I was manually deleting them all (except the original) using netsh, until I realized you can <right-click> on an entry in the screen above and choose "Forget this network."
This is the process I go through each time to re-connect. Is there something I'm missing?
I read that if Windows 8 saves too many WiFi connections, it cannot "remember" them to automatically reconnect to them, so on the notebook, I deleted all but wpcTrue (the original), and it now automatically reconnects, although occasionally it will add a new connection with an incrementally increased number -- currently the notebook shows both wpcTrue and wpcTrue 2. I had used the notebook on the road, so had about five WiFi connections saved. On the Desktop my home network is the only WiFi connection I've ever made. However, no matter what I do on the desktop, it NEVER remembers to automatically log on when the SSID is not broadcast.
I even tried manually setting up a connection via Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network, to no avail -- the desktop computer will not automatically reconnect.
I doubt that this is relevant, but the Belkin modem/router, the Belkin USB adapter I use on my desktop computer, and the notebook's Broadcom internal modem are all b/g/n. The Cisco modem/router is b/g.
If I "unhide" the SSID, i.e. broadcast the SSID, all is well in the world. Both computers automatically reconnect to the modem/router. If I hide the SSID, and then disconnect or reboot, the desktop computer will not automatically reconnect.
I just noticed that the pop up WiFi connection column shows "WiFi-2 Off" -- what does the "Off" mean?
And, why is it "-2" ? My notebook just shows "WiFi', period. (The first image with "WiFi (Off)" was from a previous Windows 8 installation on the desktop computer. I decided to change from EFI-boot to non-EFI so reinstalled Windows 8. I simply used the old image as a quick way to show how the connection name assignment runs away.)

Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

It was working earlier but couple of hours later when I booted up my Windows 8 laptop.. There was a red x on the network I was trying to connect to and a message saying my computer settings not matching.
I looked it up on youtube and I tried selecting "No authentication" and for encryption type I chose "None". But still didn't work.
Sometimes it would say limited first then when I try to reconnect the message above will appear.

Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8
I have a home network, several PCs connected to a modem/router (all with Ethernet cables), with ADSL access.
One PC has got Windows 8.1, with network settings as "private network", with sharing ("find devices and content") turned on. I am thinking about turning it off, to increase security, since I don't need to share files an printers.
My questions:
1) There is no risk to damage Windows by turning sharing on or off, with that "find devices and content" option in Windows 8.1?
2) After changing the sharing settings, I do not need to change any settings in Windows Firewall, such as resetting it to default?

I can set up sharing of my internet connection with the WiFi hotspot connection and it works fine until I restart my PC.
Then it reverts to a different setting and I have to manually change it back.
Is there a way to make the internet connection sharing settings permanent?

I'm using Win 8 Pro and i'm on a Private network which happens to be my Home Network. I'm having problem saving HomeGroup settings; I went through Change Advanced Sharing Settings then I checked Turn on network discovery and Turn on file and printer sharing, I clicked save and but when I return to the setting page again, the settings are not saved.
I've tried this several times but nothing seems to be working out. The same thing still happens when I go through Charms >> Change PC Settings >> HomeGroup >>Libraries and Devices.

I cannot connect to my wireless anymore (all other devices in my home do) since windows has automatically installed the drivers for my canon printer.
In PC setting i do not have the button wireless anymore (i am pretty sure that i had it last week). Wi-Fi (Qualcomm Atheros AR964x) is in my network connections, but cannot connect. Diagnoses says problem with wireess adapter or access point.
So what did i do until now : I have restarted the whole interne installation ( rounter, and all other devices) many times Atheros driver is up to date and device status is "working properly"
i dont know anymore what to do more (except switching to linux and not being able to use some commerical software i rely on for my work) :-(

I do a lot of AV system programming, which generally involves having to set my IP address for either my Ethernet port or WiFi card to manual IPs temporarily. I am having an issue on a relatively clean install of Windows 8 Pro that after I change my IP, when I go back into TCP/IP v4 to change it back to DHCP, it is already set to automatic... but if I right click on the connection icon and go to Status, it still has the static address. I tried to set it to another manual address and to hopefully go back in to revert, but that doesn't work.
The ONLY thing that seems to work is removing the NIC from Device Manager and then re-scanning for hardware changes where it will be automatically detected with DHCP enabled by default.
WiFi card is Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN.
Ethernet NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57??.
I've got the latest available drivers, and using generic ones doesn't work. It's also on both NICs so I don't it is a driver issue.

There is this peculiar problem I'm facing with MTU settings.
I'm using PPPoE with wifi enabled on Windows 8.1.
Couple of months back:
ADSL MTU setting was promptly set to 1492 (8 bytes for PPPoE header discounted).
All of a sudden, yahoo mail was not accessible.
When I tried
Code: ping -f -l 1464 mail.yahoo.comPacket needs to be fragmented but DF set. Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet size of 1464 (MTU:1492 - 28 bytes for adjusting different header size) is big. So decided to change MTU.
I checked for various packet sizes; First ping was OK for packet size of 1452. So MTU can be set at 1480.
I changed the MTU to 1480 in modem setting and restarted.
When connected, I tried yahoo mail again - and again failed.
I checked the MTU which is set at 1480. I tried ping with packet size of 1452 and got surprise. I got "Packet needs fragment" again. The same size was working earlier.
I repeated the process. Now the MTU came to 1460. I set the MTU again in modem and restart and try yahoo mail again to get the same failure.
Again I ping with packet size 1432. Nope. Got "Needs fragment" error.
Changed MTU setting in Modem to 1400 - retry cycle - same issue.
Changed MTU setting in model to 1300 - retry - same issue.
Then I came across setting MTU for interfaces in PC. So reverted the MTU to 1492 in modem.
Set the PC interface MTU as below. I set it for WiFi interface as I was using wireless Internet access.
Code: netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wi-Fi" mtu=1460 store=persistent
This solved the problem.
Today I couldn't access yahoo mail. Checked the MTU setting for PC wifi interface. It has been reverted to 1500 (default). May be some windows update did that.
I set it back to 1460. Tried to access yahoo mail. Still not accessible.
Checked the ping with size of 1432 (for MTU 1460). Got "Needs fragment" error.
Checked ping with packet size 1400 - OK - change interface MTU to 1420 - Still couldn't access yahoo.
Checked ping with pkt size 1400 - now not OK.
Checked ping pkt size 1360 - OK - Change interface MTU to 1300 - still couldn't access yahoo mail.
Checked ping pkt size of 1360 - now not OK.
This seems to be vicious cycle. What is happening?

I just got a network usb adapter for my new Windows 8 built PC. In the devices area of the control panel it shows the network adapter as installed, and working. However, when I got to PC Settings there are no wireless settings shown, and unlike my other computers around the house I can't find my network or any other networks which is very stranger since I live in an apartment and I'm surrounded by like 20 different networks.

I signed up for a DNS service a while back. When I stopped using their service I removed their DNS entry from the ipv4 settings and considered it done (this was all they stated for install/uninstall, just update the DNS in ipv4)
At random, the PC will revert back to their DNS server. I have no virus (Malewarebytes Pro), my hosts file is empty.
Here's what I've done:
1) Removed it from ipv4 settings manually and reset to Obtain DNS Automatically
2) Open cmd as admin and ran the following sequence:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
3) Reboot
On reboot, everything is normal, anywhere from 24 hours to 30 DAYS later it automatically reverts back to their DNS servers. I am on a .edu domain. I do not have access to the router, but I never modified anything in the router. Why my PC keeps reverting to their DNS servers?

recently my windows 7's some system files got corrupt . won't start after windows logo (when the arrow shows up=>always bsod, even in safemode). so I decided to format C and install fresh windows 8.
.
Then I had four partitions
C:windows(7)
D:Softwares
E:Games
F:Mix Stuff.
My plan was to format C (of course for windows 8) and D (as C had only 20Gb space so I thought I would also format D 46Gb and give C 45Gb and D 20-21Gb as it was useless to me and contained only a bunch of crappy softwares ). Well, it FAILED here's how. after formatting C and D I deleted them thinking that boths unallocated space will merge. but it DID'NT. After deleting I tried creating new partition on D but it FAILED "we cannot create create new partition" (search google 'cause others also sometimes have this ****** error many times). Then I did same thing with C and it WORKED. I had to give it again 20Gb (maximum) - NO CHOICE. Then I installed Windows 8 on C. (thinking I will later format D on desktop)
.
Now here's the scenario : I DO NOT WANT TO FORMAT E: AND F: AS IT CONTAINS MY PRECIOUS DATA.
After the startup config, 'Startup' came up I went to Desktop then Computer and then wow what?
Only C: I found there 7.67Gb free of 19.5GB. Where are others gone .
UPDATE :. I went to disk management and saw only (C:) other 138Gb (something) was unallocated space .Then just for checking I booted my pc from windows installation usb and on the drive screen I saw C 19.5-20Gb and same Unallocated space 138Gb.

I recently purchased a new Dell XPS laptop with SSD. The first thing I did after receiving it was to split the C drive into two using Easeus Partition Manager. Probably due to this, neither Windows nor the Dell Backup & Recovery software detect the recovery partition any more.
When I launch Windows built in recovery creator, it's 'Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive' option is grayed out. If I click next, it would say 'We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing'.
Dell Backup and Recovery says 'Corrupted Environment. Dell Backup and Recovery has not been able to detect the Recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted." (see screenshots below). One thing I am 100% sure is that the recovery partition is present and is intact. I was able to create a bootable USB using Dell Backup and Recovery (this is different from a full recovery media in the sense that the laptop will boot from USB, and then recover from the recovery partition). Using this USB, I was able to restore the OS properly. Unfortunately, even after this factory restore, Windows doesn't detect the recovery partition.
1. Output of diskpart
Here, partition 4 and partition 9 both have WinRE.wim. Partition 4 also has Reagent.xml. Both have the GUID same, but offset is different.
2. Output of various commands
Code: reagentc /disable
successful
Code: reagentc /info & reagentc /enable
REAGENTC.EXE: Operation failed: 3
REAGENTC.EXE: An error has occurred.
Code: recimg /showcurrent The recovery image configuration cannot be found. The system cannot access the configuration file. Error Code - 0x80070002
3. I also tried modifying the c:WindowsSystem32ReAgent.xml file without success. Based on the output of 'diskpart detail partition' shown below, I updated the file.
Attempt 1:
Attempt 2:
Code: Here, 'WinRe.wim' is located in 'Partition 9WindowsRecovery'. That's why I used 'WindowsRecovery' as the 'WinreLocation path'.
Neither of these worked.

I'm having some problems with my PC. Here is the model of my PC "Asus Desktop: M51AC".
So basically what's going on is I did a fresh re install of my operating system Windows 8 which came with the PC installed. Everything went fine, everything was working! I did some updates and then it fails, there was a bunch including 51 updates and Windows 8.1 so it was downloading. At the installation part it shows a error. I restarted my PC and I noticed I wasn't connected to the internet. I updated all my drivers, and when it crashed it showed a yellow mark by these devices.
realtek pcie gbe family controller
sm bus controller
sm bus
Those were the only ones with a yellow mark by it. I fixed it by installing the latest drivers, the error code was error code 10 could not start, it was for all of these devices. I installed the latest drivers now it doesn't show the errors but yet it still does not work, and my PC doesn't detect the Ethernet cable from my router anymore. I searched this on every forum, and used google lol, for about 3-4 hours now over a update failing. I re-installed my OS again and it still does not work. I think it blew a fuse or something and it's not detecting it, I dont honestly know. I went in command prompt and pinged 127.0.0.1 and received 4 packets somehow which is odd.
Here is a video also I recorded:
