Maintenance :: Windows 8 Rendering Errors - Strange Black Boxes And Blurred Text
Sep 29, 2012
Windows 8 has been having very strange rendering errors, the desktop still works fine but the rest is all strange blurred with black boxes. What the problem is it just suddenly showed up as that.
System Specs are:
Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (Quad)
16GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
Windows 8 64-Bit (Downloaded from DreamSpark)
I recently set my dual monitor up at work, and since then on the top hand corner of my second monitor, its showing Windows 8 Enterprise, blurred in with something else?
After update to 8.1 first thing I noticed is that my installation windows/boxes are blurry, both graphics, text and buttons. Then I opened up Logitech Setpoint and found out that its blurry too. Applications such and Office or Adobe do not have blurriness in text or interface.
Also I noticed that text in Metro apps such as mail goes from smudgy to clear in few flicks whenever new text renders on screen.
If I adjust scaling myself (by percentage not by slider) text gets a lot better in desktop environment but with custom scaling I cant get the window/box size or font size right, its either too small or too big.
I tried playing with ClearType but it didn't to shizz.
I also have installed the latest drivers for Intel and Nvidia before update and after update just to make sure.
I noticed that MS/Intel won't support my Intel 915GMA drivers and in the Windows 8 DP the surfing the web everything looked slightly too big and all the fonts look fuzzy. In the full version of 8 which I now have how is the text rendering on the basic display?
How to stop/remove the annoying text boxes offering advice on swiping on Win 8.1?
I suddenly got one today on the left side of the screen - "Switching between applications........swipe from side of screen, etc....." I can't get rid of it, and it's driving me mad. I could restart, but I use DNS, MemoQ, etc, so it always takes a while to get started again.
In the Pictures Library I can view some pictures, but for others I get only black boxes. All those pictures show perfectly in Photo Viewer and in Explorer.
When I log in and go to the pc settings - personalize options.. all the text links are black .. even on the start screen my name and the start is covered with such a black background. I have win 8 pro x64 activated..

Also, i dont get any updates other than win defender ones.
Asus Vivobook. It was running fine last night, but today it was a bit slow to respond. I eventually restarted it and it told me I have disk problems. Now I'm stuck on a black screen with the Asus logo that reads "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete."
It's been this way for multiple hours now. I'm going to leave it overnight and hope it repairs, but, if it doesn't, is there anyway to recover my files? I have some important stuff backed up online, but I haven't backed up in a bit over a month and I don't want to lose my files. Most forums tell me to reinstall Windows 8? Would that make me lose my files, though, and how can I do that if I can't get past this error page?
I have restarted my windows 8 pc and when i came back i saw that the windows password screen has strange shapes that i have never see before. I entered my password but it doesn't working. Something strange characters similar to other shapes seen.
I cannot switch to safe mode cause when i hard boot the machine and trying to press f8, machine is beeping very loudly and doesn't work.
Some files, when open with notepad, can be easily read in English. For other ones, I get characters. How could I read these characters, is there any online translator for this? or I should learn basic C++ or other means?
I was running my pc with Windows 8.0 Pro 64 bit and I now getting a screen with the Windows logo and I am now getting a message "Diagnosing PC & Auto repairing disk errors may take several hours".
It has been like that for a couple of hours.
How long I should leave it running or perhaps I should do a fresh reinstall of Windows, I have the Microsoft DVDs?
I run the Cleartype text tuner wizard and chose a thicker text setting but it only works on IE, the rest of programs are unaffected, is there a way to make that wizard work for ALL programs
Can I change hardware and improve font rendering in Windows 8?
Text on Windows 8 looks pretty awful on my hardware. I'm using an Nvidia 550ti card and a Dell U2410 monitor. Text, in browsers and in the Windows GUI, is spindly, pixellated, and headache-inducing. Evidence? Look at msn.com in IE10 and then look at it on a Mac, or boot a live Ubuntu DVD and take a look.
So... I see frequent assertions that my 24-inch 1920x1200 monitor lacks the DPI to render fonts correctly in Windows (it's 96 DPI). I also see frequent assertions that I need to use a different video card.
I'd buy new hardware in a flash if I knew it would solve this problem.
Would a new monitor and/or a new video card improve the looks of text in Windows 8?
Should I maybe look for a 15-inch FHD laptop that crams a lot of pixels into a small space?
I have run sfc /scannow on my system to find if there were any bad files. It comes up and says that it had found bad files and could not repair all of them. Ive run it three or four times in a row and always get the same result.
I am running win 8 pro on a toshiba laptop R700 S1312 64 bit with 8G Ram. I am getting numerous 10016 errors (same error) after every restart.

in the process of trying to fix another issue (metro games not working on one profile but working on another) I tried to scan and repair any drive errors, it gets to 58-59% and then the machine just reboots Running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit
I ran SFC and it complained that some corrupt files could not be repaired.

Im from cyrpus/turkey so my native language is turkish but Im using english in all of my devices. So I changed the language regional settings of win 8 to all english united states except the region is cyprus and input lang is turkish Q keyboard.
Even though, in my metro UI the weather and news, mails contents are in english, the live box titles remain the old language which is turkish that I do not want to see.
After I was needed to disable Chrome internal installation of flash due to my constantly Shockwave flash crashes now I see that youtube used hardware acceleration only when going to fullscreen no matter the quality. Other wise in the normal or the larger player the video info says "software video rendering and accelerated video decoding" ....
I've a weird issue with Windows 8.1 and my mechanical hard drive. I've a 2TB Western Digital hard drive that's partitioned with one of the partitions being a Media partition (H) containing over 107 gig of images, mostly tiff files ranging from 80-700 meg. I'm a photographer who tends to edit it layers.
Anyway for some odd reason when I access a folder containing these files, my hard drive goes into a frenzy and starts making loud vibration noise as though the drive is thrashing rapidly. Additionally I get a green bar going across the address bar as though it's establishing access permission. I've checked the drive and initially it just had "Everyone" listed so I added Administrators, and myself. But it still acts as though it's seeking permissions...
Interestingly enough no other folder or partition goes into this frenzy; just the folders under H partition containing the tiff images.
My initial thought is it's a caching issues as the PC is trying to cache and display the thumbnails for these files but I'm not sure. And if it is, how do I fix?
BTW this is a replacement drive as I thought my other drive was defective since it was doing the same and had it RMA'd.
Also this is basically the same partition/orginization structure that was under my Win 7 machine and I never had this issue.
I just upgraded Win 8 on my Acer Iconia W3 Tablet (x86) to Windows 8.1. But now I have the problem that in the settings-app and in the righten menu (e.g. the search-function) every text is just a white (or sometimes black) box. In other Apps and on the desktop-applications the text is displayed correctly; and before I have installed Windows 8.1 everything was fine too. Below are two screenshots which should describe the problem.
Win 8 Pro. After a couple of days uptime my tray icons in the hidden pop up are turning into white squares, which makes them hard to identify. I tried rebuilding the icon cache as found here, Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Forums which seemed to solve the problem. But a few days later an icon has turned back into a white box, a bandwidth meter.
Everything works OK but am wondering if all the various hacks I've done (Aero Glass, Start8 etc. etc.) are affecting it somehow. This normally wouldn't worry me too much but when installing Windows Updates normally one would see that shutdown message about 'installing updates xx%' and again at startup. After the word restarting (or shutting down) appears for a split second it's black screen throughout that process as if my graphics card is cut off before anything else, which I find odd.
Could of course be the fault of nVidia's latest driver I suppose. (314.22 WHQL). It isn't the video driver, rolled it back and still the same.
When I start up, log off, or shut down my PC, (Just upgraded to windows 8 pro a few days ago from windows 7 pro) I get a black screen for 30 seconds to a minute. The screen is back lit, and windows 8 still functions 100% afterward. I have updated all drivers.
I am running windows 8.1. I just turned on my computer and got the following screen. It wont recognize keyboard input as normal characters nor will it allow me to connect to the internet. It was perfectly on 3 hrs ago before I turned it off then back on again.
The link below shows you what my current windows 8.1 screen looks like.
