Gaming :: Flight Simulator X In Windows 8
Sep 18, 2011I installed FSX on my Windows 8 Developers Preview to see if it would work. When trying to open FSX after the installation, the splashscreen would appear and a few seconds later the infamous "Microsoft Flight Simulator has stopped working" message would appear.
I went through the event log and the faulting module seems to be kernelbase.dll, which explains that FSX is not compatible with windows 8 out of the box.
Gaming :: Flight Simulator X Screen Freezes?
May 13, 2013Whenever I start a flight in Flight Simulator X(FSX), the screen is frozen but I can hear the aircraft's engine sound.Also the controls are working as I can hear the engine turn ON and OFF when I control it through my keyboard.
I can see my cursor and move it. Also pressing ESC shows End Flight, Continue Flying and View flight analysis option.On pressing continue flying I get a black screen with sound still working. If I do End flight and restart a flight I again get a black screen.
I used to play Flight Simulator X(FSX) in Windows 7 earlier, I upgraded to Windows 8 last year and installed FSX which worked pretty well. After a month I tried to uninstall it which was unsuccessful because of an error which its setup showed. So I deleted the FSX folder in Microsoft Games. Now after a few months when I tried reinstalling FSX, it showed "Error 1628 : Failed to complete installation". I got rid of that error by installing FSX from a new Windows user account. Before installing I deleted FSX folder in %appdata%/Roaming and all other folders mentioned here : How to uninstall and reinstall FSX - PMDG Simulations
Nvidia website automatic check states that my graphics drivers are latest and do not need any updates. Also other games such as GTA SA and Team Fortress 2 are working with this current graphics card. I tried repairing the installation from setup but still the screen freeze is persistent.
It works when I press alt+enter, i.e change full-screen mode to windowed mode until I change something on the screen like opening GPS, changing views for which I have to change my window size by dragging its border with cursor.
Pictures Library - Get Only Black Boxes
Mar 9, 2012In the Pictures Library I can view some pictures, but for others I get only black boxes. All those pictures show perfectly in Photo Viewer and in Explorer.

Gaming :: Win 8.1 Black Screen During Games (No BSOD Codes)

For the past few weeks, I had been having issues with my computer with black screens only during gaming.
At first, it seemed like a power issue since the machine kept shutting off and rebooting with no BSOD or error codes. So I got a new PSU.
Still kept happening - tested each GPU individually and all passed without error/problems.
Black screen problem still persisted. So I installed Win 7 x64 on a spare HDD and checked to see if it was software/drivers - still got black screen/reboot.
Decided it had to be the motherboard - RMA'd the board and just got a replacement (2 days ago). Still get black screen/reboots.
Reflashed the GPU BIOS - worked for a while when the voltage was left at stock (instead of 1.212V). However, still got black screen/reboot after about an hour.
I decided to test RAM w/ MemTest86+.
Tested RAM @ XMP setting (Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB 9-11-11-31 @ 1.65V) - got a ton of errors in MemTest86+ (411 errors after about 8.5 hours).
Reset RAM to "Auto" (1333Mhz) tested again - no errors so I booted into Windows. Tried playing AC4 and got black screen + reboot within 10 minutes.
Tested each RAM stick individually today and 3 of them passed fine with no errors while the fourth one had errors in the first and second passes - 10 errors.
Took two sticks out and put two "good" sticks of RAM back and fired up the computer.
Booted into Windows and ran Heaven 4.0 & Valley - both passed without issue with the GPUs OC'd and overvolted @ 1.212V.
Thought I had solved it. Fired up AC4 and got a black screen in about 10 minutes. Tried different GPU settings (stock, lower OC, no over-volt etc.) to no avail - all gave black screens within 20 minutes (some sooner). Tried BF4, got a DirectX error - game wouldn't even start! Tried several times - nothing! Tried BF3, got a black screen within 3 minutes.
My PSU connected via a thick 12AWG cable to a 20A breaker. The PSU cable (PSU: Lepa G1600) itself is quite think (albeit short).
Why this is happening - I have either tested or replaced everything.
There are no error codes; just a bunch of Event ID 41 in Event Viewer but that doesn't indicate anything useful (just unexpected crash/reboot).

Im from cyrpus/turkey so my native language is turkish but Im using english in all of my devices. So I changed the language regional settings of win 8 to all english united states except the region is cyprus and input lang is turkish Q keyboard.
Even though, in my metro UI the weather and news, mails contents are in english, the live box titles remain the old language which is turkish that I do not want to see.

Letters Are Not Shown In Particular Apps - White Boxes
Aug 2, 2014I just upgraded Win 8 on my Acer Iconia W3 Tablet (x86) to Windows 8.1. But now I have the problem that in the settings-app and in the righten menu (e.g. the search-function) every text is just a white (or sometimes black) box. In other Apps and on the desktop-applications the text is displayed correctly; and before I have installed Windows 8.1 everything was fine too. Hidden Tray Icons Turning Into White Boxes Over Time
Mar 6, 2013Win 8 Pro. After a couple of days uptime my tray icons in the hidden pop up are turning into white squares, which makes them hard to identify. I tried rebuilding the icon cache as found here, Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Forums which seemed to solve the problem. But a few days later an icon has turned back into a white box, a bandwidth meter.

Jun 17, 2014I am having some problems with 3 years old PC. Only while playing games (Civ 5 - Heroes & Generals - Rise of nations) I suffer from freeze/crashes, PC doesn't show a BSOD, the mouse pointer works normally it doesn't freeze (until I try to alt+tab or alt+ctrl+del), and from my speakers I can hear looping sounds.
The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I try reinstalling windows, and the problem still exists.My BIOS, drivers* and OS are update, I perform a memtest for 6 hours and show no errors, I can run prime95 + kombustor and everything is fine, no temps problems, GPU never go over 68c and CPU at 58c, and no crashes.
DSIM commands show no errors neither.
*I tried latest NVIDIA drivers, and old ones, im actually using 334.89 version, and the problem persist.

My question is what role does my CPU play in gaming? Is it a big thing? I always thought that having a strong, powerful graphics card was more important that a powerful CPU.

Jan 10, 2014Okay, this is the second time with a different game this is happening, at very specific points in the game, My Laptop's screen blacks out and goes off, the computer stays on with lights and stuff but the screen just stays off like when you put off a pc but the fans keep running, I then have to forcefully power my pc off to put off the entire system.
I don't think this has anything to do with my Laptop's temperature as I've just had the vents and heat sinks ventilated recently, also cause the laptop goes off at just one scene in a particular mission in both games, Assassins Creed and Far Cry 3.
I don't think its my PC's specs either cause I went through the requirements of these games before getting them. I've not been able to go past the stages in the game where my PC goes off.

Mar 23, 2014After a couple of weeks using 8.1 (x86) and after Windows 7 Ultimate (x86), I have come to the conclusion that it is a much lighter and faster OS than 7. Mafia 1 for instance runs on full specs without a single hiccup no matter what. I know it's an old game but it's also very demanding, especially on my system which is not exactly up to date. I can also play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on medium settings very well indeed, and that's a demanding game on the system. GT Legends by Simbin is a reasonably demanding game especially on full graphics options and with a full grid of cars and it's running well on Windows 8.1. My onboard Intel graphics adapter is coping a lot better with these games than it did on Windows 7 Ultimate. I had to find a Windows 8 driver for it (I've found it on here) then all my games started to run very well considering my old laptop specs.

Jul 31, 2014Ever since last night any game I try to open, whether it be an online one on steam or battlenet or an offline one experiences major lag during menu, loading and in game if im lucky to enter. Diablo III took 6 tries before i managed to enter the game where the lagging persisted. Rust and Killing floor major lags i couldnt even enter a game and servers wouldnt open. Fallout 3 on my computer would crash every time. Age of Empires II couldnt open past the windowed menu selection, Saints Row the Third stuck on loading screen. Oblivion wouldnt open due to first time set up DivX failing. Mirrors edge would experience Application load error p: 0000065432.
Im including a DxDiag, SFC Scan result which shows corrupt files unable to be fixed.
My graphics card is Nvdia GeForce 720M
Internal graphics card is Intel HD Graphics 4000

Feb 6, 2014I'm planning on trading laptops. I do audio production and gaming. I have an i3 and the cpu is clocked at 2.4 ghz and he has an i5 clocked at 1.8. How much of a difference will this impact performance? For better or worse?
I am curious because I had a desktop a while back and it had a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 and I went to this i3 @2.4 laptop and the cpu sucks in comparison to the desktop...I was originally thinking the i3 would be a increase since it was newer architecture.
I would still think on the graphics side its definitely an upgrade because the i3 uses Intel HD Graphics and it sucks...it doesnt even use opengl. The other uses a Nvidia GeForce GT 740M.

Jun 7, 2014This is basically a fresh install. I only really installed steam along with the drivers for my motherboard and gpu. It originally did it while on steam only but has since done it other places. Last night was particularly bad, as it would BSOD and then sit on a black screen while trying to load up. Turning it off and on eventually started it back up. Then it did a weird thing where it would keep rebooting itself. Eventually I shut it down for the night.

It enters the gamescreen and crashes out in few seconds. The setup menu gives direct3d .net framework exception. have also updated the dirctx runtime.
