Maintenance :: How Best To Manage Recovery / Repair After Upgrading To Windows 8

Oct 28, 2013

I have a HP pavilion DV7 laptop which originally came with Windows 7 installed.

Recently I upgraded to Windows 8 and then to 8.1 but now want to ensure I have the necessary recovery capabilities in place.

I have taken a full backup when the system was at Windows 8.

Can I create a new set of recovery disks (HP cyberlink won't let me because I've already got a set made when the system was running W7)?

What should I do with the recovery partition (which I assume has a W7 image)?

Or is it sufficient to rely on a USB recovery drive and assume Windows 8 has the means to repair itself.

Recovery Partition Showing After Upgrading To Windows 8.1

Aug 8, 2014

I upgraded my new refurbished Dell 15 7000 from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now, my hidden recovery drives are showing on "My Computer". On Windows 8, they were hidden so the user, or softwares, can't access the partitioned recovery drives.

After upgrading to windows 8.1, they are all visible on "My Computer" and files are be written on them. How can I hide these drives? I am afraid of doing Windows Update or installing Office 365 since they extract the files on a different drive and move them back to C drive.

Dell 15 7000 specs
Windows 8.1 upgraded from Windows 8
Intel i7 4500u
Nvidia 750m GDDR5 2GB

Stuck In Windows 8.1 Repair Loop - No Recovery Disc

Nov 6, 2014

My Gateway machine was performing a windows update when the neighbourhood power went out. It was off for four hours. When I went to turn the computer back on, it said automatic repair the diagnosing your pc.....that lasted about 5 hours! Then a blue screen with options came up. When I went to pick the advanced options, I clicked accidentally on the first one and it rebooted into the repair loop again. Since it takes so long for the diagnostic part, when the blue screen came up again it was likely the middle of the night.

I saw it at 7:00 am and tried to click the advanced options but the computer had gone to sleep by then and so once again it got rebooted into the loop. Gateway refused to support since the warranty is up. I can't find a Recovery disc image for 8.1 to put on a usb stick, and I'm back to trying to find answers on my 12 year old machine running XP. I tried the boot to safe mode with alt+F10 but can't get that to work either. If I knew how to force a reset to factory defaults without being able to get into windows I would. I've been doing this for 3 days now and I was just starting to like 8.1 too...

HP Envy - Cannot Create Systems Repair Disk Only Recovery USB

Jan 20, 2014

I have an HP Envy with a recovery partition. I did indeed create a dedicated USB drive that copied the recovery partition from the partition on the hard drive that shipped with the unit.

I wanted to create a restore registry type of system repair disk as you could in Windows 7. However even though I read that the option should appear in the Recovery Options that says: Create a Systems Repair Disk with a CD or DVD (see System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8), that option never appears.

While I do have Acronis as a backup I would like a quick bootable CD/DVD that offers a registry restore option. But perhaps that is what the recovery partition is for and when the time comes it will offer me that option, not sure (????).

Or may be there is a separate .iso I can downlaod and burn like I did for Win 7 32 bit and 64 bit.

Automatic Repair Loop / Recovery Options Not Working

Jun 23, 2013

Recently was running a backup program and suddenly I get the Windows 8 blue error screen (the one with the mocking '' icon) and system dies. I turn on and it seems to booting very slowly then it proceeds to do the pre login screen installation of updates. After half an hour or so and with updates on around 70%, system dies again. Now when I turn the machine on it appears to alternate between either hanging for ever on the Windows 8 loading screen or attempting to run an 'Automatic Repair' which invariably results in a blank screen and no fix.

Having read several 'Automatic Repair loop' posts on the net, it appears I need to load the recovery disc and run repair or restore programs from there. Of course the CD I made failed (crappy disc?) so I had to search my original licence email and use the provided link to download and create a new installation disc from a working machine. This disc loads and gives me the option to install Win 8 (presumably a fresh install with loss of files) or a troubleshoot menu. Running the automatic repair option results in a rather inane 'Couldn't do it' message and gives a blank path to a log file. The system restore option prompts me to 'Restart and select operating system before trying this' and i'm not sure how to do this as no such option is given at boot.

Laptop Can't Boot Stuck In Automatic Recovery And Can't Repair

Sep 2, 2014

Computer was running slow so I did a reset of windows. It worked but the problem still existed. My computer froze so I turned my laptop off and back on only to find it stuck in that automatic repair loop. I tried system restore, no luck. I made that bootable usb for repairing and that didn't work either. Straight repair won't work either. I have tried every option and am completely lost as to how to proceed. I need the files off the hard drive but don't have a way to connect it to anything to be able to access the files.

Maintenance :: Unable To Repair Windows 8

Sep 15, 2014

I have had this Samsung laptop for just about a year. It came with windows 8 installed ( I also have a Samsung system recovery disk that I requested) and I have had problems all along. My old laptop had windows vista and I think part of the problem is that my settings somehow were synched with old computer. My old computer had a workgroup, which got synched with new computer. I have tried several times to reset/restore windows 8 to factory settings and at first glance it looks right but a lot of my old settings are still there, especially in internet explorer. Also when I go into advanced repair it says that it cannot be repaired.

I also just found this, but I'm not sure it applies and I don't want to change any settings that I shouldn't be:

Please note that you cannot use Refresh or Reset Your PC features if Windows 8 or 8.1 is installed on a drive with GPT (not MBR) partition table until you force "UEFI only" boot setting in BIOS/EFI. Windows will not detect GPT partition alignment correctly if BIOS booting is enabled.

And this is what shows under my available drives:

available drives
local disk (C (System)
SAMSUNG_REC2
(C (Missing)

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - SFC / Scannow Cannot Repair Files

Apr 15, 2014

I've been trying several things throughout the day and I have had no success in fixing the corrupted files. I have ran "sfc /scannow" several times (even in safe mode). I have also ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" before and after "sfc /scannow" to no avail.

I am running Windows 8.1, I tried booting from my Windows 8 Pro DVD but whenever I tried to run "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c: /offwindir=d:windows" I would get an error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the Repair service". How I can fix this without doing a clean install or refresh?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Wants To Scan And Repair Drive On Every Boot

Jan 5, 2014

I have this identical problem mentioned here : Scanning and repairing volume (?Volume...) on startup

I think it has something to do with my deleting the 'system reserved' 350mb partition when I reinstalled Windows 8. I don't want it showing in My Computer and when I go into Disk Management and give it a drive letter, this message goes away on boot. But, since I can't merge this very small partition with any other drive, I'm not sure how to not show this drive and not get the scanning message on boot up.

Since upgrading to windows 8/8.1 x64 i have twice had this situation when during boot up windows tries automatic repair & fails , every time i restart same repair fail happens , its stuck in this cycle , neither "Refresh" or "Reset" option works , . I have to do a fresh format & install , loose all my files stored in the OS partition , I even tried to recover the files using linux boot cd but the folders were inaccessible/corrupted .

I tried every solution i could find to make it boot including Unable to refresh or reset PC after Automatic Repair fails in Windows 8 but nothing worked .

This has happened twice in the one year since i have been using Win 8 , Is there any way to avoid this from happening i future ?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Stuck In Auto Repair Loop - Nothing Works

May 18, 2014

A couple days ago, I was casually playing Warframe. Tried to alt+tab out to check an IM and my screen went black. Not sure what happened as I could still hear the mouseover sounds as though Warframe were still active. Fiddled around for a few minutes and couldn't get Task Manager to come up, so I decided to just hold the power button on my laptop until it shut down. No harm done, right?

When I booted back up, Windows greeted me with a "Diagnosing Your PC" message under the normal Toshiba boot logo. After it hung there for a few seconds, it moved on to the "Attempting Repairs" screen. Didn't take long for it to decide it wasn't too happy with me for suddenly shutting it down.

Since then, I've been stuck in an auto repair loop. So far I've googled everything I could think of, but it seems my efforts were in vain. Tried putting Hiren's on a thumbdrive and booting from there, and for some reason, Windows just boots right back into the auto repair screen. I've even wiped my 1TB external and put the recovery image from my work PC on there. That didn't work either. I've gone through every thread google's given me and I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.

I should probably note that formatting is not an option for me. I'd try installing Ubuntu on my external, but since the recovery won't even boot, I feel like that'd be in vain.

Maintenance :: Stuck In Automatic Repair Loop - System Restore Not Working

May 12, 2014

My Toshiba laptop/Windows 8.1 installed a VLC Media player & Malware bytes today. I was instructed to Restart as 'drivers not working properly' & since then have been on the Automatic Repair loop. It says it cannot fix it - log file: C:WINDOWSSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt, & I tried a few System Restore points but that just says -

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore. You can try System Restore again If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method.

Thing is I can't get into Windows or my laptop to disable the antivirus program.

I don't have any CD or DVD & no product key as the disc has been misplaced.

Manage Wireless Networks In Windows 8?

Dec 31, 2012

In the previous versions of Windows you could see the list of wireless networks you had previously connected to, change the order in which these Preferred Networks connected when more than one of them were available, as well as add or remove the Preferred Networks from this list. You could do so via Control PanelNetwork and InternetManage Wireless Networks.

But in Windows 8, unfortunately this feature is unavailable

It can be done manually in the cmd by these commands

Show Wireless Networks

netsh wlan show profiles

Show stored key for a Wireless Network

netsh wlan show profiles name=[profile name] key=clear

Delete Stored Wireless network

netsh wlan delete profile name=[profile name]

Or Third party software can be used to do so such as

WiFi Profile Manager 8

Maintenance :: File History Windows 8.1 Recovery

Jan 2, 2014

Im running windows 8.1 pro x64. I just did a clean install and very foolishly I let the file history back up my data instead of doing a manual backup like I usually do.

I tried to do a recovery and it didn't show any recovery dates other than yesterdays date which was when I did the clean install

My computer used to be named Desktop and it had my name as the User. After the during the install I decided to name computer Office with my name as the user instead. I figured maybe changing it back to desktop would do the trick but it didn't work. I even assigned the backup drive the same letter it was prior to clean install.

I can see all my data on external I wouldn't mind just manually moving it back but theres a couple problems with that. First of all every file has now the time stamp right into the file name which is annoying but also for some stuff theres multiple copies with different time stamps.

No matter what I try I cant get the recover files to recognize theres a back up there.
