Maintenance :: Unable To Repair Windows 8

Sep 15, 2014

I have had this Samsung laptop for just about a year. It came with windows 8 installed ( I also have a Samsung system recovery disk that I requested) and I have had problems all along. My old laptop had windows vista and I think part of the problem is that my settings somehow were synched with old computer. My old computer had a workgroup, which got synched with new computer. I have tried several times to reset/restore windows 8 to factory settings and at first glance it looks right but a lot of my old settings are still there, especially in internet explorer. Also when I go into advanced repair it says that it cannot be repaired.

I also just found this, but I'm not sure it applies and I don't want to change any settings that I shouldn't be:

Please note that you cannot use Refresh or Reset Your PC features if Windows 8 or 8.1 is installed on a drive with GPT (not MBR) partition table until you force "UEFI only" boot setting in BIOS/EFI. Windows will not detect GPT partition alignment correctly if BIOS booting is enabled.

And this is what shows under my available drives:

available drives
local disk (C (System)
SAMSUNG_REC2
(C (Missing)

Windows 8.1 Unable To Repair / Rollback?

Dec 4, 2013

So about a few days ago my windows 8.1 decided to shit itself and refused to start up. I started checking on the web for some solutions to my problem and one of them was to start up with the windows DVD and try running the repair tool and such.

So I decided to do that, but no matter what option I tried, be it repair tool, recovery, full recovery, roll back, none of the options worked, it kept telling me "this operation system doesnt support this feature" or something along those lines. So in the end I just desided to format the HDD and reinstall Windows 8 and its running fine right now.

My question is why wasnt I able to use those features, and how can I make sure I have those feature available for me in the future?

Note: As I was typing this I just realised the DVD I tried using to use those various tools was a Windows 8 DVD, the windows I had installed was 8.1.

Setup Installation :: Unable To Refresh Or Reset PC After Automatic Repair Fails

Aug 4, 2013

You have Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro installed on your PC. Your PC fails to boot into Windows and launches Automatic Repair to attempt to repair Windows.

Automatic Repair is unable to repair your PC and you select "Advanced options". After selecting "Troubleshoot", you choose to either "Refresh your PC" or "Reset your PC".

In this scenario, recovery may fail and you are returned back to the main WinRE screen. This issue may occur if the System or Software registry hives have become damaged or corrupted.

To attempt to resolve this issue, follow the steps below. Following these steps should only be used if you are attempting to use the "Refresh your PC" or "Reset your PC" options in Windows RE because your system is in a non-bootable state.

-After Automatic Repair fails to repair your PC, select "Advanced options" and then "Troubleshoot".
-Select "Advanced options" and then select "Command Prompt".
-If prompted, enter in the password for the user name.
-At the Command Prompt, go to the windowssystem32config folder by typing the following command: cd %windir%system32config.
-Rename the System and Software registry hives to System.001 and Software.001 by using the following commands:
ren system system.001
ren software software.001

I did all that but when I tried to rename the Software.001 file the system responds: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" ...

I tried to create a Ubuntu start up usb key so that i could maybe get in and rename the file but that presented more problems.

System File Check - Corrupt Files Found But Unable To Repair

Aug 20, 2014

My laptop is running ok but I have noticed that certain programs have been taking a lot longer than usual to install/update (e.g. iTunes) but they always do. Then the last few days AVG Antivirus has been wanting to auto-update the software (not just the virus definitions) but each time it would freeze during the ''configuring'' step and subsequently cause every other program running to freeze and stop the opening of any other program - although I could still move the cursor so not a complete freeze if that makes sense.

So today I removed AVG with the removal tool and tried to do a fresh install but now I get a failure message immediately telling me ''MSI Engine: failed to initialize the package''.

How to go about fixing this and ran system file check which said corrupt files were found but it was unable to repair some of them. Here is the log:

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - SFC / Scannow Cannot Repair Files

Apr 15, 2014

I've been trying several things throughout the day and I have had no success in fixing the corrupted files. I have ran "sfc /scannow" several times (even in safe mode). I have also ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" before and after "sfc /scannow" to no avail.

I am running Windows 8.1, I tried booting from my Windows 8 Pro DVD but whenever I tried to run "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c: /offwindir=d:windows" I would get an error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the Repair service". How I can fix this without doing a clean install or refresh?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Wants To Scan And Repair Drive On Every Boot

Jan 5, 2014

I have this identical problem mentioned here : Scanning and repairing volume (?Volume...) on startup

I think it has something to do with my deleting the 'system reserved' 350mb partition when I reinstalled Windows 8. I don't want it showing in My Computer and when I go into Disk Management and give it a drive letter, this message goes away on boot. But, since I can't merge this very small partition with any other drive, I'm not sure how to not show this drive and not get the scanning message on boot up.

Maintenance :: How Best To Manage Recovery / Repair After Upgrading To Windows 8

Oct 28, 2013

I have a HP pavilion DV7 laptop which originally came with Windows 7 installed.

Recently I upgraded to Windows 8 and then to 8.1 but now want to ensure I have the necessary recovery capabilities in place.

I have taken a full backup when the system was at Windows 8.

Can I create a new set of recovery disks (HP cyberlink won't let me because I've already got a set made when the system was running W7)?

What should I do with the recovery partition (which I assume has a W7 image)?

Or is it sufficient to rely on a USB recovery drive and assume Windows 8 has the means to repair itself.

Maintenance :: Avoid Windows 8.1 Automatic Repair Boot Loop?

Feb 7, 2014

Since upgrading to windows 8/8.1 x64 i have twice had this situation when during boot up windows tries automatic repair & fails , every time i restart same repair fail happens , its stuck in this cycle , neither "Refresh" or "Reset" option works , . I have to do a fresh format & install , loose all my files stored in the OS partition , I even tried to recover the files using linux boot cd but the folders were inaccessible/corrupted .

I tried every solution i could find to make it boot including Unable to refresh or reset PC after Automatic Repair fails in Windows 8 but nothing worked .

This has happened twice in the one year since i have been using Win 8 , Is there any way to avoid this from happening i future ?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Stuck In Auto Repair Loop - Nothing Works

May 18, 2014

A couple days ago, I was casually playing Warframe. Tried to alt+tab out to check an IM and my screen went black. Not sure what happened as I could still hear the mouseover sounds as though Warframe were still active. Fiddled around for a few minutes and couldn't get Task Manager to come up, so I decided to just hold the power button on my laptop until it shut down. No harm done, right?

When I booted back up, Windows greeted me with a "Diagnosing Your PC" message under the normal Toshiba boot logo. After it hung there for a few seconds, it moved on to the "Attempting Repairs" screen. Didn't take long for it to decide it wasn't too happy with me for suddenly shutting it down.

Since then, I've been stuck in an auto repair loop. So far I've googled everything I could think of, but it seems my efforts were in vain. Tried putting Hiren's on a thumbdrive and booting from there, and for some reason, Windows just boots right back into the auto repair screen. I've even wiped my 1TB external and put the recovery image from my work PC on there. That didn't work either. I've gone through every thread google's given me and I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.

I should probably note that formatting is not an option for me. I'd try installing Ubuntu on my external, but since the recovery won't even boot, I feel like that'd be in vain.

Maintenance :: Stuck In Automatic Repair Loop - System Restore Not Working

May 12, 2014

My Toshiba laptop/Windows 8.1 installed a VLC Media player & Malware bytes today. I was instructed to Restart as 'drivers not working properly' & since then have been on the Automatic Repair loop. It says it cannot fix it - log file: C:WINDOWSSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt, & I tried a few System Restore points but that just says -

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore. You can try System Restore again If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method.

Thing is I can't get into Windows or my laptop to disable the antivirus program.

I don't have any CD or DVD & no product key as the disc has been misplaced.

Automatic Repair Couldn't Repair Your PC?

May 10, 2013

Ok, So, I started up my laptop this morning and the screen was all wonky, It was light blue and there were swiggly white bits, I waited a bit and then restarted it.

The Auto Repair started up when the computer started back up so I left it alone for a bit

"Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC"

I was like Ok, I checked the logfiles "Boot critical file c:/ci.dll is corrupt"

It won't let me refresh or restore my computer.

Forgot to say, If I restart it just loops back to the auto repair.

Maintenance :: Unable To Recover System Image Made With Windows 8.1

Mar 23, 2014

We're unable to restore/recover a system image we created recently using Windows 8.1.

System details:

Windows 7 w/SP1 installed on a 240GB SSD. All available Critical/Important updates also installed.

Windows 8 installed on 80GB SSD. Updated to 8.1 successfully.

In Windows 8.1, changed default OS to Windows 7 w/SP1.

Dual-boot works OK. Win 7 boots after 5 second delay unless Win 8.1 is selected manually.

PC also has 3 other internal HDDs used for various data storage.

Used Windows 8.1 to create System Image backup. Secondary internal 2TB HDD chosen as backup location.

System Image backup dialog box had checkmarks in both Win 7 and Win 8.1 checkboxes. In other words, it insisted on creating a System Image backup that included both OS's.

System Image backup was created successfully on chosen backup location.

Today i inserted the original Windows 8 install disc and selected Advanced Tools, then opted to recover a system image.

Recovery located the system image on the secondary HDD and began recovery process.

A few minutes later an eror message appeared saying System Image recovery failed, and he reason was (i think) that the recovery disc was different than the recovery System Image.

I'm guessing it meant it couldn't recover a Windows 8.1 System Image when using a Windows 8 install disc? Or did it mean it couldn't recover Windows 7 using a Windows 8 disc?

Re-booted in BIOS and changed the "1st hard disc" from the Win 7 SSD to the Win 8.1 SSD and tried the Recover System Image process again. This time it said it couldn't find a System Image to recover and when i tried to browse to the system image another error meassage said that the drive is "locked", and to unlock the drive before trying again.

Finally, tried to re-boot back into Windows but error message says "No operating system found".
