I have an Acer M5-581T laptop with windows 8.1 (windows 8 was already installed when this laptop was bought) and has been running fine since i received it. Last night I accidentally dropped the the right hand side of my computer about 2 or 3 inches but no more. I didn't think anything of it until this morning when i tried to start up my computer and was successful until when i tried to open an application on my desktop and my computer froze. Also when i started up my computer i heard a scratching or cracking sound in the right hand side and this continued for the nect couple times i tried to restart my computer.
So, after it froze I restarted my computer just by holding the power button and upon turning it on again after the Acer start up screen i got the message "No bootable device. Hit any key." in a blue box. Hitting any key did nothing obviously. After some research i was able to press F2 and open up BIOS but with messing around with the settings and even changing in secure mode from UEFI and Legacy BIOS doesn't seem to work. Pressing control+alt+delete doesnt work, it only restarts my laptop. I haven't really done anything like try to change my laptop from windows 8 to windows 7 so it is still windows 8.1.

Don't think my OS was backed up since I was using the Home Premium version, but any recovery of files data and/or GNU licensed programs will be extremely useful.
My camper van was broken into and the OEM support disks are gone as well. Used the standard MS back up procedure on an external usb disk drive. The latter is back home, which I could FedEx to where I'm staying for the winter.

I am trying to set up a backup for a Windows 8 ASUS laptop. The backup is to go to a local network shared external drive. The folder for the back up was named Sue_ASUS_bkup and it was mapped as "W". The backup tools > Win 7 file recovery only provides a DVD as a backup location. It does not show a hard drive nor the network location as options.

I am running a regular laptop that is not a portable workstation of any sort and yet I am unable to utilize Windows 8's hidden Backup & Restore function. I have already made the appropriate backups with Macrium but my issue is the error message itself and how it may be effecting other aspects of my Windows experience. How to tell the OS that I am not a "portable workstation"?

My windows 8 pro install messed up n i have almost 2.8tb of stuff on my drive on a 3tb hd. I have an identical hd as a backup which i have (an apparently successful) a backup of my system from a couple of weeks ago on. I had set the system to do scheduled backups of the system (set to backup a system image of efi partition and c. There were a few times where i was trying to get other things done and the systemwas running slow so i cancelled the backups when i noticed them running. The software stopped the backups (seemingly successfully).
As i say my system messed up - i came home to find out it was no longer downloading (as i had left it doing when i went to work) but was on a blue screen (bsod?) saying the system needs to be restarted. Since then it didnt work well at all and after dskchk reported that several sectors were damaged so it was moving data to spare sectors (or whatever it generally reports when this happens) there were a lot of files messed up or reported as deleted when doing a file recovery scan with recuvva.
So i decided to restore the backed up system image from the other hd. Incidentally i tried mounting the vhdx backup image from that hd via windows explorer which then reported "the disk needs formatting" and didnt get any success mounting via disk management either (it mounted in the app but didnt show up on windows explorer and if i tried to access info on it via disk management it reported the same"disk needs formatting prompt".
So when i booted my win 8 dvd it didnt work cos the dvd wasnt an efi booting version so i had to boot from a usb version with the efi bit included.
I formatted the system drive and chose to do an image restore. It started doing the restore (apparently) but every time i came back to it later i had the follwing error:
"Re-image your computer
The system image restore failed.
Error details: The requested system device cannot be identified due to multiple indistinguishable devices potentially matching the identification criteria Ox80073B92"
It took me so long to set up my system n i have a lot of my own data on there too. The system drive I formatted was created in diskpart and then re formatted with "format" command (as it created the disk in raw mode) so now it is ntfs mode (uncompressed).

Windows 8 Backup has been working fine for 12 months to an external Seagate USB hard drive.I'm now getting a "device not ready" message with error code 0x80070015 and the backup fails within 30 secs of starting. I've checked the drive for errors and there are no problems. I can read /write files to the external drive. There is ample spare space on the external drive to store the backup file. How to investigate and solve this problem.

I am having trouble with a message in Action Center in Windows 8.1. It is saying "Check Backup Disk Space" and I cannot hide the message. I had Windows 7 File Recovery setup with Windows 8.1, but now after the upgrade, the message is "stuck." Can this be fixed? These two links explain it perfectly:
Windows 8.1 Update - Check backup disk space - Microsoft Community

I'm having a problem trying to restore Win 8.1 after a crash. All I get is a blue screen with an error code.
I finally deduced that I was having a hardware problem with my beloved SSD (weird glitches and erratic behavior, occasional recognition errors in BIOS, and finally I/O errors when trying to restore from backup), so I pulled it out, and temporarily replaced it with a spare HDD of slightly larger size. The backup/restore program I use is Paragon, and it has worked flawlessly for me for some time, including when I migrated Win 8.0 to that SSD over a year ago. So I pulled up the last full-disk backup (from 4 weeks ago) and did a Restore to the replacement HDD, but the resulting installation will not boot. I've tried it several times, including using a different archive, and each time I get a blue screen saying "Your PC needs to be repaired", with an error code 0xc0000034.
What is this error code, and how do I go about fixing the problem? Is there some kind of issue with restoring an SSD backup to an HDD? (I know there is something about the partition alignment which may be different, for instance.) This program worked just fine in the opposite direction, meaning restoring a backup of an HDD to the SSD.
I might have been able to use the recovery media to fix the problem, if I had the current media... unfortunately, the disk I created was from prior to the 8.1 upgrade, and it won't work anymore. My mistake. But short of a clean install back to 8.0, and then another upgrade to 8.1.

Since a week is it impossible to make a Win7 Backup Image (Control Panel).
This is the feature that got removed in 8.1 but now (on 8) I'm still using it in case I need to restore the OS.
The message shows this:
"Not enough disk space" but I have 360GB free on one disk and 150GB on another. The image is calculated at 67GB and it worked each time until now.
All OS updates installed.

Display drivers are not working properly (i.e., everything appears bigger and unclear), earlier I'd successfully updated the display drivers and made it work using Device Manager. making a backup of the drivers (may be in .inf format) from the installed drivers so that I don't have to update it every time I re-install it.

I had to restore my Dell Inspiron laptop. The worst was having to download all of the Windows updates that I had installed since I bought the laptop a year ago. Is there any way to backup these Windows updates, in case (*shudder*) this happens again, I will have these ready on a disc or flash drive ready to reinstall?

I am running Windows 8 on an Asus laptop. Two days ago it was doing updates and restarting. It did this 3 times, and on the third restart I received the blue error screen. It stated
"Recovery. Your pc needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000225
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media [like a disc or usb device] contact your system administrator or Pc manufacturer."
It gives me three options at the bottom [press enter to try again, press f8 for startup settings, press esc for uefi firmware settings]. If I press enter I get the same screen just with a bit more text. f8 does nothing. Uefi takes me to the boot menu. I have been trying to boot from a dvd r with a flash operating system in order to recover my data before it is reformatted. However, it does not seem to recognize the disc. When I select to boot from dvd rom, it tries, then on the black screen appears text saying restart and select boot device or install boot media and press a key. I tried taking disc out and putting bavk in, then pressing a key, nothing, same message.

I then rebooted to find the BIOS and the machine came up with "Computer needs Repair". I removed the second drive and the newer computer is running OK.

I have been using Windows 8 Pro for about five months and running the backup utility for about four months with no major issues. I have used it to create a system image and scheduled to back up my data files weekly.
For the past two weeks I have been getting an error message "error code 0x80780049" along with a message that my files did not backup.
My backup is via esata to an external drive and as mentioned above this was working fine (I even tried a restore of a couple of files to prove it) but now it will not complete the backup. I even deleted the entire backup and started again from scratch but backup fails at about 50% completion. I have checked with windows defender and no viruses exist.

Ive just done a clean installation of Windows 8. I checked device manager straight away. There was a listing under Other Devices with an exclamation mark listed only as "Media". Ive never seen that before so I havent a clue what it referred to. When I clicked on its properties it said Internal High Definition Audi Bus. Was this a serious issue..maybe a corrupted installation?
I wasn't sure what to do but because I had installed from Windows CD and not factory image I had to go to the Dell site and then install the Intel Chipset software. I then rebooted. The Media icon and exclamation error then disappeared from Device Manager.
Was it the Reboot of my PC that got rid of it or was it the Intel Chipset software being installed that sorted it out? Also what is "Media" referring to or is it just a generic term? Also, Im always confused as to what is the difference between an exclamation mark and the blue question mark on a white background in Device Manager which Ive seen before too?

I am trying to use Windows Backup in Windows 8 on my HP Envy h8-1414 to my external HD and I get a message saying something like, "Your last backup did not complete." The reason given is The Device is Not Ready or something like that. The error code is 0x80070015. Yet from the Desktop/Computer I can read and write to the external disk with no difficulty.
I don't want to go much further with the set up until until I can make a good backup.

I have a strange problem: connecting a Canon Powershot G10 digital camera via USB 2.0 to my Win 8.1 laptop presents no problem (info pops up).
But: Using the same cable connected to my desktop PC, there is no reaction whatsoever. No device manager listing, no error message. The USB ports are all working perfectly with other devices (sticks, external hard drive, wireless mouse & keyboard). Moreover, until some weeks ago, the Canon camera was recognized normally.
Short of re-installing the whole USB controller

Before I refreshed it, it has Sony exclusive programs like the VAIO smart network etc. I backup it both manually and with file history. I found the Sony programs and copied it to my computer. The problem is, how do you install it again? I cant find it in the search tab nor I dont know of I can still open it but I know that it is in fact complete. How do you think I should install it and as much as possible I dont want to use the file history method!

I tried to start windows 8.1 this morning and it was stuck in a boot loop. System tried to carryout repairs to no avail.
I re-installed Windows and I have some drives that are setup in a raid configuration which has a system image I created some time ago after I performed a fresh install of windows 8.1. However, I can't seem to get recovery to locate it.
Is there a way of restoring from this backup to save my having to install each programme from scratch? The file is 141 gig and is an ADI file with an XML and disk image text file.

I own an OEM Machine which is from Acer.
To ask what is probably well known amongst IT pro's; does a system image backup solution (and consequently a restore from that image if needs be) work on OEM PC's, like a desktop from Acer, actually work without problems, and would I get a proper bootable and working machine after restoration.
Brief scenario - I have used Acronis TI 2014 (Or even the Windows 8.1 system image utility) to create an image of my C: Drive/EFI Partition/Recovery Partition - and backed it up to an external USB HDD.
My OS crashes for whatever reason and I can't boot.
I then either use my Acronis bootable media CD (which I've tested and boots despite all the secure boot/UEFI/GPT mania going about users like myself) to reinstall the Acronis disk image.
OR I use a Widnows 8.1 bootable disk with the ISO (which I've tested to boot) to reinstall the Windows created system image. (I could also use the recovery drive I created in Win 8.1, which just to add, however irrelvanat it might be, includes my OEM factory default partition which was copied as part of the recovery flash drive creation)
Would either of those restore solutions give me a reasonably likely working PC again - taking into account all the stuff I don't understand like the Windows 8.1 OEM key being on the motherboard (which I would understand in terms of Windows activation and authentication could have a negative impact on restoring images over an OEM installed OS and it's partitions)....
