Maintenance :: Backing Up Laptop To HDD?

Jun 19, 2013

I have a Toshiba Satellite C855D laptop and I was wondering if there's a way to backup my files onto a computer with a new harddrive I just bought-

Amazon.com: WD Blue 1 TB Desktop Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache - WD10EZEX: Electronics

Basically, I just want to have the same files from my latop on my desktop computer with a fresh harddrive. Ofcourse the new harddrive that I will install onto the desktop wont have an OS, so how would I do it? I dont have an external HD either.

Maintenance :: Win 8.1 - File History Not Backing Up Anything At All

Nov 19, 2013

I'm having an issue with the new File History (sure do miss the windows 7 backup) thing in 8.1.

Basically when I tell File History to run it says it's updating for a minute or two, then says it's done, but it doesn't actually back up anything at all. I have it set to backup to my 750GB external drive (connected via esata) which is solely for backups. The only files that show up on it are the configuration files.

Here's the setup I'm working with:

HP DV7-4285dx laptop with > 2 week old fresh 8.1 install
SanDisk 256GB SSD (C: internal; for OSs and installed programs only)
Samsung 1TB HDD (D: internal; for data only)
Sandisk 750GB HDD (G: external over esata; for backup)

I'm suspecting the problem might have something to do with the fact that I have all of my documents, music, etc. folders redirected (changed the targets of all of the folders in my user directory to D:UsersMatt...) to my D: drive instead of them being on the C: drive.

Maintenance :: Backing Up Windows 8 - 1 TB External USB HDD

Jul 1, 2013

My laptop came with Windows 8 pre-installed and I want to make a backup of it in case it crashes. I have a 1 TB external USB HDD. Can I use it for both making a backup of Windows and then continue using same drive to make auto backups of my PC per request. Or do I have to have separate memory devices, i.e., one that only contains a backup of windows and one for other backups. Just wondering before I do any backing up because if I backup Windows on my 1 TB drive and the rest gets blocked for other saves then that would be a waste of good memory space..,

Maintenance :: File History Not Backing Up Added Library

Sep 15, 2014

File history seemed to be working OK. But then I added a library in Windows Explorer with my Google Drive folder. I don't have much stuff in this folder, less than 1GB. The problem is that File History is not backing up this folder in its backups.

Do I have to delete the file history backup and redo it again every time I add a library? (I haven't tried it but it'd be a nuisance wouldn't it?).

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - Backing Up And Restoring System Drive

Jun 12, 2014

In few days I will have my new computer with Windows 8.1, and I wonder what solution would be the best for easy backing up and restoring of system drive in the new machine. For last 5 years I've been using Acronis to create an image of entire partition c: , with windows and all my crucial software, and if only my system felt slow or there was too many stuff installed, I simply restored it from this image (of course app data was moved to d:, so that no settings of my programs were replaced). From time to time I was making new image, so that it was always ready to work 'out of the box' with all the updates etc..

Any different solution to accomplish the same as I don't want to move app data to d: any more because I'll have ssd drive for my system, and I would prefer to have it all in one partition, so my solution will no longer be effective. Is there any native Windows 8 solution for system backup and is it any good? Or maybe I could simply backup "windows" and "program files" folders, and restore just them. Would it be as effective as restoring entire partition?

Backing Up To External Hard Drive Using File History

Sep 16, 2014

I am trying to to back up my files, using file history, but the program will not recognize my Iomega portable hard drive.
I keep getting this error message every time I try to back up the files.

"File history does not recognise this drive"

There doesn't appear to be any problem with the Omega as I have copied my files to this and double Save when modified.

It seems this problem has been around generally for a long time now as W8.1 search turns many pages on this and I have tried several of the suggestions without success.

My camper van was broken into and the OEM support disks are gone as well. Used the standard MS back up procedure on an external usb disk drive. The latter is back home, which I could FedEx to where I'm staying for the winter.

Maintenance :: Very High RAM Use At Brand New Laptop?

Feb 5, 2013

I recently got a new laptop, first thing I did was delete most bloatware and such, and there really isn't a whole lot remaining other then OS and drivers. However, when checking the taskmanager recently I noticed it using 80-90% of the RAM. While being under very little use. Only thing was chrome taking up 200-300MB.

The laptop is a samsung 9 series, with 8 GB RAM, so I can't see how it should be having so much troubles when just running on lowgear. I checked and it does have 8GB RAM registered, and the performance view shows it using 6GB of 7,6. Considering there are plenty of windows 8s laptops with just 4GB I couldn't imagine this being normal?

Adding together what is shown by the task manager wont get me higher then 1 GB at most as far as RAM usage, is there any tool giving better information about what is all used? Could it be the quickboot system of samsung that eats up some or some sort of reserve that will let go of some RAM if other programs demand it?

Maintenance :: New Laptop / Constant 100% Disk Usage And 50% CPU?

Sep 15, 2014

The new Windows 8 touch laptop I just got is running ridiculously slow. Apps take minutes to open sometimes because the disk is constantly being used by several processes, even when idle.

The main culprits showing in Task Manager are "Service host: Local system", "Windows Modules Installer Worker", and "Antimalware Service Executable". Between them they are using 97+% of the disk and about 50% CPU constantly. It's gotten a bit better since I uninstalled all the trialware garbage that came on it, including McAfee, which was a massive slowdown. I plan on just using Windows Defender for security but it still says it's turned off, could that be the problem?

But for real, I'm pretty sure McAfee slows down the system more than the viruses.

It came with Recovery partitions. Now using the Samsung Recovery application I had copied my recovery files to another external HDD alongwith a backup of C drive. Now all these are in some weird extensions. I refreshed my PC and then the problems began. The problems were :

-No Fn key working
-Samsung recovery did not recognize factory condition recovery point,i.e,Factory reset option was gone.
-The backup on external HDD was showing up on Samsung Recovery, but after clicking on it, it would go on a restart and recovery never happens.

Maintenance :: Utilizing D Partition - Laptop Hanging Constantly

Jun 5, 2014

I have an Acer Aspire E1-571 laptop with a 750 GB HDD partitioned in the following ways:

Recovery partition - 400MB
Recovery partition - 450MB
Recovery partition - 20GB
EFI System partition - 300MB
C: (boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition) NTFS - 338.07GB (31% free)
D: Data (primary partition) NTFS - 339.32GB (100% free)

My laptop keeps hanging, which I think could be due to the C: drive being so full. Sometimes it will hang with only a couple of tabs open in Firefox, and it has been known to hang on start up - though this is rare and hasn't happened for a while.

Task manager keeps saying 100% disk is being used (which leads me to wonder if it is to due with the free disk space in C: ) - and sometimes even task manager can hang. I have been wondering if utilising the D: partition could alleviate this problem.

I'm currently rewriting this on my phone due to the laptop hanging again. Since my HDD is partitioned into 3 recovery partitions, what is my D: Data for?

Can I merge it with my C: without adversely affecting my laptop?
Can I otherwise use my D: to store files safely?

Since it takes up almost half of my 750GB HDD space, I would find it odd if I was unable to utilise it and to find that it was also full of hidden recovery information. When someone (PC World) says they'll sell you a laptop with 750GB HDD space, they actually mean that they'll sell you one with less than half this free disk space?

The constant hanging has gone past infuriating and I would love to get it sorted - though even if it has nothing to do with freeing up space on the C: drive, I'd still love to know what this D: is for and if it can be used.

Maintenance :: Disk Usage Stuck At 100% - Laptop Freezes?

Aug 16, 2014

I have a HP Pavillion Sleekbook 15-b002ee with Third generation core i5 processor 1.7 GHz, 500 GB Hard disk and 4 GB of RAM installed. Windows 8 came pre installed on it.

I bought this laptop 11 months ago and it worked fine for 10 months and then from the last month its presenting unusual problems. My disk usage is stuck at 100% and the laptop freezes and never lets me work or do anything. Heres what i have already done to solve the issue but have been unsuccessful:

1) I have reset my PC completely and reinstalled windows 8 using the factory setup. Didnt solve the issue, newly installed windows displays the disk usage 100% and the performance is same i.e the system freezes.

2) I have tried adjusting my paging file, no change made a difference to the performance of my laptop. The default system managed Paging file size is something around 3.89 Gb. Does my problem have anything to do with my paging file?

3) disabling the "Windows Search" and "Superfetch" services and still it didnt solve the problem.

4) I have also run checkdisk on my hard drive completely. It took me a complete day to do so but still no change.

5) Before resetting my laptop, an error called "Kernel_data_inpage(http.sys)" used to come on my upgraded windows 8.1. Whats the issue?

So what should i do? Is there any problem with my hardware? Is my hard drive having bad sectors and is that causing the problem?

Maintenance :: Windows 8 Laptop Not Fully Booting After Shutting Down?

Jul 19, 2014

My Windows 8 laptop (model is HP Pavilion g6-2210us) and for some reason it no longer boots. Here's pretty much in order how it went down:

-Windows 8 stops responding for no apparent reason
-I force a shut down and try to turn it back on, thinking that would fix it
-It starts loading Windows 8 up like normal, but it's taking an extremely long time to do it.
-After a while (about 20-30 minutes) it stops loading it and just goes black, but the screen is still on
-After this happening 4-5 times and nothing happening, I hit the power button 3 times to try Automatic Repair, which says "Preparing Automatic Repair" for 20-30 minutes, then goes black again

I think it may be hard drive failure but the drive gave no signs of dying, like slowing down, they don't usually just die like this. It's more likely to be just file corruption, but I have no Windows 8 disc, and I never knew I would need to make my own recovery disc. Anyway, I do know how to do the replacement of anything that can be replaced in most laptops, and I would probably just load up Linux or another free OS on the new drive if I need to get one.
