When I bought my new Asus laptop, lady told me I should buy a 32 gb stick to back up o/s, as M/S no longer supply a recovery disk. I started the sequence.
control panel--recovery--create a recovery drive--then got a bit scared .....
I went through it with MS but after booting up, I inserted stick, r/c, properties, stick was empty???

Basically, I just want to have the same files from my latop on my desktop computer with a fresh harddrive. Ofcourse the new harddrive that I will install onto the desktop wont have an OS, so how would I do it? I dont have an external HD either.
In few days I will have my new computer with Windows 8.1, and I wonder what solution would be the best for easy backing up and restoring of system drive in the new machine. For last 5 years I've been using Acronis to create an image of entire partition c: , with windows and all my crucial software, and if only my system felt slow or there was too many stuff installed, I simply restored it from this image (of course app data was moved to d:, so that no settings of my programs were replaced). From time to time I was making new image, so that it was always ready to work 'out of the box' with all the updates etc..
Any different solution to accomplish the same as I don't want to move app data to d: any more because I'll have ssd drive for my system, and I would prefer to have it all in one partition, so my solution will no longer be effective. Is there any native Windows 8 solution for system backup and is it any good? Or maybe I could simply backup "windows" and "program files" folders, and restore just them. Would it be as effective as restoring entire partition?
I am creating a Windows 8 recovery drive on a new 16GB flash drive (The only option with my new refurbished Gateway NE56R49u Laptop). The process has been running approximately 5 hours now with the green progress bar being only 1/32 inch from complete for approximately 4 hours. Should I click the "cancel" tab and/or the "red X" to close the program? If I do, will I be able to start the process again? This just seems like an extremely long time to complete such a small portion (1/32 inch on the progress bar) of the process.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI couldn't repair/replace my laptop's corrupt files doing an sfc or dism scan and had to do a reset as I couldn't do a refresh. I thought my laptop was clean when I created my last system image, last month, but when it came to using the system image I realised there was corrupt files on there too so I had to do another reset. What checks should I do before creating a system image? so I know that as well as there being no viruses there are no corrupt files either. Check for errors in Event Viewer and do an sfc and dism scan?

Can I use it for both making a backup of Windows and then continue using same drive to make auto backups of my PC per request. Or do I have to have separate memory devices, i.e., one that only contains a backup of windows and one for other backups. Just wondering before I do any backing up because if I backup Windows on my 1 TB drive and the rest gets blocked for other saves then that would be a waste of good memory space..,

A new 25 GB hard drive appeared, everything was fine.
Now I would like to sell this laptop but I don't know how to put the recovery partition back in its place or if it's even possible.
I know the backup it's complete because the data size t's the same and when i tried it, the restore was from the scratch, even with the sony wizard before the windows configuration.
I recently bought a Dell Windows 8 desktop. I upgraded the desktop to Windows 8.1. I want to create a recovery drive using a DVD rather than a flash drive. (I understand Microsoft wants you to create recovery onto a flash drive rather than a DVD. Not sure why.)
I found several places on the net which discuss just how create recover onto a DVD. They suggest that I do a search on "Windows 7 file" and this will display an option to click on "Windows 7 File Recovery" ... and that will lead me through the steps to create my recovery onto a DVD.
Problem is "Windows 7 File" is not found. How do I get this onto my Windows 8.1 system?
if you've made a recovery image backup of Windows 8.1, can you use a Windows 8 recovery USB drive to restore it, or do you need to make a specific Windows 8.1 one?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to to back up my files, using file history, but the program will not recognize my Iomega portable hard drive.
I keep getting this error message every time I try to back up the files.
"File history does not recognise this drive"
There doesn't appear to be any problem with the Omega as I have copied my files to this and double Save when modified.
It seems this problem has been around generally for a long time now as W8.1 search turns many pages on this and I have tried several of the suggestions without success.
I'm having an issue with the new File History (sure do miss the windows 7 backup) thing in 8.1.
Basically when I tell File History to run it says it's updating for a minute or two, then says it's done, but it doesn't actually back up anything at all. I have it set to backup to my 750GB external drive (connected via esata) which is solely for backups. The only files that show up on it are the configuration files.
Here's the setup I'm working with:
HP DV7-4285dx laptop with > 2 week old fresh 8.1 install
SanDisk 256GB SSD (C: internal; for OSs and installed programs only)
Samsung 1TB HDD (D: internal; for data only)
Sandisk 750GB HDD (G: external over esata; for backup)
I'm suspecting the problem might have something to do with the fact that I have all of my documents, music, etc. folders redirected (changed the targets of all of the folders in my user directory to D:UsersMatt...) to my D: drive instead of them being on the C: drive.
I'm trying to backup my Quicken data files using File History. I tried creating a new Library folder and moving the files into it, but they don't backup to my external HD when using File History.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to create bootable recovery media in case the computer fails. I have tried to create a recovery image using the in-built windows recovery tool but the RefreshImage/ Customrefresh.wim file will not copy onto a usb stick.
Background: I have upgraded 4 home computers from Windows 7 to 8 to 8.1. The upgrades were done through the Microsoft website and Store as downloads. I had problems on two computers with Windows 8 and the recovery usbs I made did not work with them (missing files) - I had to reinstall the whole system again through renewed download. I want to avoid this problem again. This is the situation on my own main computer at present. I opened the create recovery tool in windows. It could not detect a recovery partition/ image so I went ahead and created the RefreshImage/ CustomRefresh.wim file using the instructions from the Microsoft tutorial. This is now sitting happily on my C drive, but the create recovery tool does not recognise it ('copy' box is greyed out). I see that I have 3 disk partitions on my hard drive: Volume 1 is called the Restore Partition. It has no letter designation and says it is 100MB in size but 100% free Volume 2 is the normal C drive for booting. Volume 3 is a hidden PQService partition of about 19GB with 60% free - I am not sure if this is new or belongs to the original OEM.

I am not sure why the windows tool does not recognise the refreshimage folder for copying onto the stick and, based on my previous experience with windows 8, the basic recovery usb that I can make does not contain the files that are needed when something goes badly wrong.
After having received delivery of my new Lenovo X240 with a preinstalled copy of Windows 8 on its HDD the first thing I did was install a 128GB m2 SSD and use "Paragon Migrate OS to SSD" to migrate Windows 8 to the SSD. After Windows 8 was up and running on the SSD I updated to 8.1 and also ran all the other available updates. I then created a recovery drive using a USB stick. During this process the entire content of the recovery partition (roughly 8GB) was copied to the USB stick as well. A few days later I decided that I would prefer to use a different USB stick to create the recovery drive, yet when I went through the entire process again using the other USB stick the content of the recovery parition was not included anymore. Can I simply copy the source folder with the content of the recovery partition from the recovery drive I created first to the second one? Would it be recognized if I ever needed to restore Windows from this drive?

The Create a Recovery Drive actually formats the USB drive in FAT32 and makes it bootable. I plan to purchase a 64GB USB flash drive. Will the Recovery Drive Creator repartition the USB Flash Drive as a 32GB FAT32 partition? I tried the same on an external USB hard drive and it repartitioned the external hard drive as a 32GB FAT32 partition.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFile history seemed to be working OK. But then I added a library in Windows Explorer with my Google Drive folder. I don't have much stuff in this folder, less than 1GB. The problem is that File History is not backing up this folder in its backups.
Do I have to delete the file history backup and redo it again every time I add a library? (I haven't tried it but it'd be a nuisance wouldn't it?).
After refreshing my windows 8, i noticed that my second drive i.e recovery disk (D: winretools) is no longer visible in my computer. My laptop model is Dell inspiron 15R

-i5-3210M
-6 GB RAM @ 1600 MHz
-1 TB HDD @ 5400 rpm
-2 GB nVidia GT650M with Optimus
-Windows 8 Single Language 64-bit
It came with Recovery partitions. Now using the Samsung Recovery application I had copied my recovery files to another external HDD alongwith a backup of C drive. Now all these are in some weird extensions. I refreshed my PC and then the problems began. The problems were :
-No Fn key working
-Samsung recovery did not recognize factory condition recovery point,i.e,Factory reset option was gone.
-The backup on external HDD was showing up on Samsung Recovery, but after clicking on it, it would go on a restart and recovery never happens.
I have been routinely backuping my OS and important files using Windows 7 backup on a NAS. It just so happened that I needed to re-image my OS drive and I got into the Windows 8 recovery boot sequence.
Under the Advanced tools I selected the System Image Recovery and tried to look for the system image on the network path. Although the prompt said it was connecting to the network , the network share was not found. the command prompt couldn't ping google.com and netsh wlan <SSID> command did not work in hopes of connecting to my local wifi.
Is there a way to connect to the wifi network where my NAS is connected to in order to re-image from the system image found on the NAS? Luckily , there was an older image on a separate local HDD that I could re-image from but I would prefer if I could connect to the NAS during the recovery process.

And sometimes it goes on and it just becomes a black screen... My laptop was shut down for a few weeks and this happened and I need it again now... My friend's laptop would not boot, and would not factory recover, reset, or refresh. I tried to clone the hard drive before I started messing with the disc. It would not clone, but I was able to copy the recovery partition to a USB drive.
He never make recovery discs, so could not re-install, but I can borrow the recovery drive that my aunt made for her laptop.
I've been dual-booting Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate, but a while back my Windows 8 kind of went "South" and wouldn't boot at all (I got an error message that a device was "not attached"). I have a recent system image on an external USB hard drive, but when I boot to "system recovery" using my repair disk it can't seem to find my USB drive at all.
The tutorials here mention installing a SATA driver to access disks that are not recognized, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
I have a laptop that runs Windows 8 (64 bit), and the hard drive is apparently a dynamic (as opposed to basic) disk. My problem comes when I try to make a backup image of my active drive. I know a lot of backup software has troubles making an image of a dynamic disk. Now after researching, I know that Windows 8 comes with its own imaging tool, "Windows 7 File Recovery". I tried to create a basic partition, and used the file recovery tool to create an image file, but the file would not be saved, maybe because the partition itself is on the same dynamic hard-drive (the error said something about the partition not being large enough etc... even though I made it 40GB).
My question is, is the native system imaging tool of Windows 8 unable to copy a dynamic drive, or is it because I need to save the image file to some place other than the hard drive (maybe a whole bunch of DVDs, since it is an option). The last computer that I own is as old as a dinosaur, so I really did not keep up with all these advancement- I just feel that dynamic format is a beast to work with.
