Maintenance :: Windows 8 Laptop Not Fully Booting After Shutting Down?
Jul 19, 2014
My Windows 8 laptop (model is HP Pavilion g6-2210us) and for some reason it no longer boots. Here's pretty much in order how it went down:
-Windows 8 stops responding for no apparent reason
-I force a shut down and try to turn it back on, thinking that would fix it
-It starts loading Windows 8 up like normal, but it's taking an extremely long time to do it.
-After a while (about 20-30 minutes) it stops loading it and just goes black, but the screen is still on
-After this happening 4-5 times and nothing happening, I hit the power button 3 times to try Automatic Repair, which says "Preparing Automatic Repair" for 20-30 minutes, then goes black again
I think it may be hard drive failure but the drive gave no signs of dying, like slowing down, they don't usually just die like this. It's more likely to be just file corruption, but I have no Windows 8 disc, and I never knew I would need to make my own recovery disc. Anyway, I do know how to do the replacement of anything that can be replaced in most laptops, and I would probably just load up Linux or another free OS on the new drive if I need to get one.

My son's laptop suddenly had all keyboard functions totally locked last night.
He was wondering whether he entered some sort of control sequence, accidentally, for this to happen.
He has managed to recover by going back to a restore checkpoint for earlier this week.
In case this happens again, is there any Windows control sequence he could have used to resolve this?

This laptop will not shut down fully...basically when I ask it to shut down, it appears to do everything properly to the point where the screen turns off and the lights turn out....except for one. The power light goes from green to a pulsing orange. It's like it's only putting it to sleep because if I press a key on the keyboard it turn on almost instantly.
I should say that the person who gave me this laptop said she had this issue when she first bought it and couldn't be bothered to get it fixed (as you do). Also, this happens regardless of whether the battery is in the machine or not, or vice versa with the power cable.
I was thinking it's an ATK thing but then it did it with Win 7 with the official drivers. BIOS is also up to date.

I've noticed my Add/Remove list is pretty sparse with lots missing. How to repopulate it as a program I want to remove doesn't have a visible uninstall file in its folders.

I close my laptop before going to bed. And some mornings I wake up, and open my laptop, only to find out that it has shut itself down while I was sleeping, and now windows wants me to send an error report. This has been getting rather annoying.

My laptop keeps shutting down. It shut down just now 10.05pm british summer time. It also shut down yesterday and has shut down every now and again for the past few weeks.
It isn't overheating, i ran speccy and its ok temps. I run windows 8 and when it shuts down the screen behaves as if I have pressed the shut-down option at the bottom left of the screen, but I have not pressed it, it just does it automatically.
What checks I can do to find out what the problem is.

I hate when things don't work when and how I'm expected them to. Anyway, I have Windows 8 Pro N and I want it to shut down instead of hibernate. I made a shortcut:
"C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -t 00 -s" and whenever I press it, it reads "shutting down" on a blue screen, after that it turns off. So far so good. But when I press the power button it reads "resuming from hibernation".

I cannot print with Win8anymore! I was able to print on my WIFI networked printers previously with this computer.
Other computers on the network can print to them. Upon investigation, I found that the print spoiler ws off. I found the MS directions for restarting the Spooler. I turned it on it shuts itself off when you look at the installed print drivers!

Everything works OK but am wondering if all the various hacks I've done (Aero Glass, Start8 etc. etc.) are affecting it somehow. This normally wouldn't worry me too much but when installing Windows Updates normally one would see that shutdown message about 'installing updates xx%' and again at startup. After the word restarting (or shutting down) appears for a split second it's black screen throughout that process as if my graphics card is cut off before anything else, which I find odd.
Could of course be the fault of nVidia's latest driver I suppose. (314.22 WHQL). It isn't the video driver, rolled it back and still the same.

3 days ago i turned of my computer and left it turned of over the night. Then when i tried to turn it back on again, i get the windows 8/8.1 boot logo, then when it dissapears i just get a black screen, however, i get the windows tone after a while indicating that the system is running, and that the only problem is that the screen is not displaying anything.
I have tried booting in safe-mode, that worked. But no matter what i changed (start-up programs and resolution) nothing worked. I have tried connecting another screen to my laptop, but that screen also displays the black color.
I should perhaps mention that my laptop originally came with Windows 7, but i upgraded it to Windows 8, and later on 8.1.

This is a brand new windows 8 system that was sold to a customer. He brought it in for being unable to boot into windows after having used it for a couple of weeks, and he demonstrated the issue to me. It literally just boots to grub. This customer is a basic windows user. No experience with linux or dual booting. He uses it for email. I have never come across this particular problem before, so I ran the normal partition tools to see if the table looked proper for a windows 8 machine. Everything checks out ok, however it is still booting to a grub prompt!!

I have a friend who has tasked me with removing the dreaded "Interpol" scareware virus from his Windows 8 laptop. Sadly, this means he can't boot into Windows 8, as the virus just locks him out. How can I boot into Safe Mode, so I can run the "Power Eraser" tool from Norton (handy tip!) to remove it?
If this can't be done, how can I tell the PC to boot from the DVD-Rom drive?

My laptop is never usually that slow but last night it was really slow and I restarted it but it took about 5-10 mins to get to the gateway loading logo an after awhile it said diagnosing but it didn't do anything, this morning I switched it on and it came on the login screen straight away but it took me like 5 mins to login cause it was being so slow but I finally log in and it takes like 10-20 seconds just to right click on something so I went on task manager to check if anything was full and disk was 99% full by things like system, AVG, service host, host process but I've never has a problem with avg.
My specs are:
Laptop: gateway NE56R17H

Laptop Keyboard and Mouse is not working properly now. Last time this occurred which was about 3 months ago, I reset-ed Windows 8 and it was all working again. When this occurs, in both incidents, I can't go to bios, can't enter password to login, can't open on-screen keyboard(except sometimes), and even if I get open, using it is same as using the keyboard.
Mouse errors: LMB changes to Select all thing so I can't click anything. This issue is same at least most of the time.
Keyboard errors: This varies a lot from time to time.
I reset-ed OS this time too and the problem still exists unlike before.
Ex: I'm not sure this key is this or not, but it was I think Z is ctrl, x is alt, a don't work, ctrl, alt, shift don't work. Then, keyboard itself keep on pressing space or opening windows support.
And then I updated my BIOS and now the problem was a little bit solved or I think it would be best to say the problem changed bit.
Now z,x,a, spacebar, ctrl, alt, shift, everything working, except ! and maybe a few other keys, but now It keeps pressing caps lock, shift and opening up windows support.
Then I restarted, and now I pressed F2(BIOS) and it let me in. I tried changing the boot priorty order but those keys F5/F6 aren't working, so I restarted, now again I can't press F2.
And sometimes laptop beeps for some reason on booting up.
There are no keyboard drivers except the default one and sticky and filter are all off.

My girlfriend has recently got a new laptop and unfortunately she doesn't like it, despite me loving Windows 8.1.
She would like to try Windows 8 but is going back to Uni soon so would like Windows 7 as a back-up dual booted.
I've shrunk the partition and created a simple partition for Windows 7 but really unsure about Installing Windows 7 on a Windows 8 Laptop, it's an ASUS X550CA-XX417H. I've checked power shell with SecureBootUEFI and result is True.
What would be the best way to dual boot?

So recently i bought a refurbished/used Samsung ultrabook (NP540U3C-A01UB )
One of the features is that is has : (500GB with 24GB ExpressCache - Technology)
Which I don really understand.
I've also noticed that the system has a lot of partitions that are taking space and are largely unused. I've had the computer for about a month and i use it everyday almost and so far a lot of the partitions havent been used.
I don't see a reason why to have those.
So can i Erase them??
Please notice 2 disks. I know the larger one is used for C: and the other for the ExpressCache???
Also notice that disk1 is empty. Pretty much all of them are, with the exception of 2 (C: and the partition right of it)
What is it used for?? How can i find out?? Whoever installed this system made a mess.
Here is a second part of my question:
For work reasons I have to have a Ubuntu machine and I thought I could just dualboot and use the partitions that are unused. Which is why i care about the unused space.
I have used virtualbox in the past but it was really slow. I need a responsive system and virtualization is no longer an option.
So my question would be how can i accomplish the dualbooting?? Specially taken that i have UEFI/random partitions in my system.
I know there are a lot of tutorials out there but none come close to my drive mapping/situation.
Just don't wanna destroy my system while trying to get the dualboot working.

I previously got windows 8, I accidentally installed the German version, it took me about a hour to figure out how to change the language. Once I changed it, mostly everything's in English, but some things like the lock screen is still in German! this is getting pretty annoying.

Don't think my OS was backed up since I was using the Home Premium version, but any recovery of files data and/or GNU licensed programs will be extremely useful.
My camper van was broken into and the OEM support disks are gone as well. Used the standard MS back up procedure on an external usb disk drive. The latter is back home, which I could FedEx to where I'm staying for the winter.

I have uninstalled my synaptics mouse pad driver and wanted to boot pc in safe mode but then Bit Defender rescue scan menu pops up and gives me option to Reboot and Shutdown. I tried both options but all of them give me same result and bring me back to the Rescue Scan. I then tried to scan because I may have some sort of virus thats causing it but it says "Failed to load Antivirus engines" and now i am stuck and can't boot my pc fully. Why has this happened? I also installed an intel driver for my processor before that. The program has created restore points before installation of the driver but i can't access them.
I am running windows 8.1 64bit
My Laptop is hp dv7-3xxx

Since yesterday everytime I shutdown or reset my laptop(Dell XPS15) it eithewr gets stuck on the restart screen forever or just goes to blanck screen with the power still on if I shutdown. So then I have to hold the power button down to switch off in both casesI stupidly don't have any recovery option inplace and when I try and do a fresh reset or anything from Advanced system options it gets stuck on a blank screen because it can't reset properly. Also anytime I try and disable or uninstall drivers in device manager it will constantly say it's uninstalling or will go to not responding.

I've got an issue with Windows 8.1 x64 where sometimes (not always), if I Shut Down the computer, it'll shut down as normal, even displaying the "Shutting Down..." message, but rather than powering the machine off, it'll reboot just as if I had initiated a Restart instead of a Shut Down.
I definitely know I haven't accidentally told the computer to Restart as it's happened more than once, I know I've selected the Shut Down button and Windows 8.1 even states it's Shutting Down and not Restarting. If I restart the computer instead of shutting it down, it'll restart just as it should, nothing wrong there.
There is no abnormal behaviour at all during this process. The computer does behaves identically to if it was supposed to Restart and Windows throws no errors, BSOD's or any trace of something going wrong and thus somehow causing the machine to reboot rather than shutdown. powercfg /lastwake gives no information at all and Event Viewer lists nothing under Critical or Errors that could be a cause.
Most of the time though, the computer will just shut down as it should, but this random rebooting is getting very irritating. If I shut down the computer again after it has restarted (when I told it to Shut Down), it will then Shut Down as it should.
Something I should note however, when I shut down the computer, I do so through Classic Shell Start Menu's Shut Down button. Every time these random reboot occur, I have shut the computer down via Classic Shell Start Menu. I rarely shut the computer down any other way, so perhaps somehow Classic Shell is to blame? Perhaps there way of telling Windows to shutdown is a bit flaky?
I believe the same issue occurred on my laptop (also running Windows 8.1 x64 with Classic Shell Start Menu) when I shut it down through Classic Shell's Start menu, but only once (I don't use my laptop nearly as much as my desktop). This problem has never occured on my desktop or laptop back when they were running Windows 8 (not 8.1).
