View 9 RepliesI recently connected a SATA HDD to my computer to retrieve files from another computer (mother board died). Now I have multiple entries on my navigation pane for My Computer and C Drive. I have attached a screenshot of my Nav Pane: Click on Prints Phil, This PC and S3A7083D005(C) all get a list of the same (desktop, favorites, documents etc). C Drive got itself renamed to a string of numbers and This PC did not exist before either. My computer's name was Sneezyphil.
I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 two days before I plugged in the SATA HDD so there was no previous restore point unless I reinstall Win 8.1 - but looking at your threads on that issue, might multiply my problems.
Is there a way to re-manage my Navigation pane?
just upgraded to 8 from XP. I have a recovery drive for XP. Can I reformat this recovery drive so I can use it to install & recover Windows 8 instead if I have a problem in the future?

I've followed various Windows 8 checklists but the system says everything is working. The same headset works fine on my WXP laptop.
I downloaded and installed Realtek High Definition Audio Driver for Windows 8 64bit. No change.
I have recently upgraded my Envy 17 to Windows 8.1 and am now having real problems getting the DVD / Blu-ray to recognize any discs. I have done a search on the HP website but with not much luck, a lot of the time it just takes me back to the search page and the support pages are only for Windows 7.
The computer is an Envy 17 1050ea Notebook

I just got a Gtx 780ti, and after plugging it in, I've updated my board's drivers (msi x79a-gd45 8D), gpu drivers (non-beta, then 334.67 beta). Pc crashed before and after all of these updates. Screen goes black and pc stays on, sometime it boots back up and sometimes doesn't. No crashes have happened during gameplay yet, performance is great but pc crashes when I exit game/benchmark. I got a i7 3820 quad core, 1 gtx 780ti, msi x79a-gd45 8D, a GS800 corsair gaming power supply, intel all in one cpu liquid cooler and a western digital 2tb 6gb/s hdd. This thing uses a 8pin and 6pin power cables so maybe 800 watts isn't enough?

Since then I have had random black screen issues. At one point I reinstalled the OS, and they still occur. You may notice the R9 270 needs a 450W power supply at the least.
At first look you would think this is the problem, but it's not. Before the R9 270 I had an EVGA 750 Ti, which only uses like 60 watts of power or something, as well as a CM430W power supply, and the black screen issues still occurred.
First I returned the power supply for a CS450M, black screen still occurred. Then I returned the 750Ti for an r9 270, and the issue still occurs.
If it's not the graphics card, power supply, or OS, what should I do?
The dump file is attached. It blames NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have no clue what this is or how to fix it.
I'm booting off my SSD which is drive C: and I have games and programs on an extra hard drive which was origanally drive H: but after a restart it switched to I: and when I go into Disk Management to change it Drive H: isn't there.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 8.1 all of my previously listed devices are no longer listed under devices... in fact there are no devices listed. I can also not add a device. If I look in device manager they are listed there and if I go to print the printer shows up and I can print. The screenshot below shows what I see when I open "Devices and Printers" in control panel. The biggest issue is not being able to add devices like Bluetooth speaker.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm getting this random clicking sound(more of a tick-tock-ish) that's coming from within my system. I'm not sure where but it's adequately loud for me to notice. It just goes 2 clicks(tick-1 tick-2) then goes away. It doesn't have a specific time frame, like it doesn't happen every how many minutes or so.
I actually wasn't worried until I've read some sites that it could be a start of a so to be hdd failure. If it is, is there any way I could fix it? Or at least how long do I have before it goes total bye-bye on me?

Since I have upgraded to 8.1 my remote control no longer works it is detected in device manager and driver is installed but when I click skip,play, stop etc nothing happens. I use it mainly for my music.
Is there a way to get it working again. I use the default music app to play music which I preferred the old version to be honest.

So, I installed Windows 8.1 x64 from the Windows Store yesterday and now my QB-35US3 Hard-drives keep randomly disconnecting and connecting again. I had no problems before the upgrade. The bay is connected via USB 3.0.

I recently upgraded my HP Touchsmart IQ500 from Vista Home Premium to Windows 8 Pro. Aside from the lack of a media center or otherwise out-of-the-box-inability for DVD playback I've been enjoying the change. I solved the DVD problem with VLC, but I cannot figure out how to get my microphone to work now. It was fine before the upgrade, and now there's just silence when trying to Skype or record otherwise.
updating the drivers in the Device Manager which I have tried, only to get a message that reads:

Dell true to form has made the cmos non-upgradeable for use with Windows 8. So, with regrets, I need to know what motherboard, cpu and sound cards, memory, etc, I will need in order to upgrade this elephant.
Then of course, I need to know if my graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 6200, power supply 250W, etc are sufficient. The power supply is welded to the frame of the box, so will be a pill to change out. I also need suggestions on which Sound card, since there isn't one now. It too is part of the motherboard.
I guess I should also ask if this upgrade is even possible. Is WIN 8 backward compatible with xp software?
Just upgraded to Win 8.1 Pro from Win 8 on a Dell Latitude E6530. Everything was working fine; post upgrade, system does not recognize any of my SD cards upon insertion. [Don't even see a drive letter show up.] All other peripheral storage devices are fine.

Originally came with windows vista 32-bit, so recently I upgraded to windows 8.1 32 bit after about a month the track pad and keyboard BOTH came un-responsive, and in the device manager, it's coming up with a "COPROCESSOR" error.
Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:
Couldn't install Windows 8.1
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
I have windows 8.1 and am trying to do a refresh as I've had some problems. But I keep getting a message that says, "The drive where windows are installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I then did a scan using "SFC/SCANNOW" When it was finished it said that it found some corrupt files but could not fix some of them. So the question is: What is a locked drive and how do you unlock it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a 4TB external USB 3.0 hard drive. The plan is to copy all of the data from my current internal 2TB drive to the 4TB, then I'm going to crack the case of the external hard drive open, take the drive out, and put it in my PC to replace the 2TB drive that's in there now (which I know will void the warranty). This isn't going to be a boot drive as I have an SSD for that.
I had read that Windows does not support large drives of this size and that it would show up as 2 partitions, so I was prepared to convert the drive to GPT in order to have 1 large partition. However, I connected the drive up to my Windows 8.1 machine and it shows as 1 large partition of 3.63TB, which is about what I expected.
Does this mean I don't have to convert the drive after all? Can I do what I'm planning to do and everything will work fine? Or do I need to convert it to GPT before I copy all of my data over and if so, how do I do that exactly?
I have a Samsung 530U3C laptop with a 500 GB HDD and an internal 24 GB SanDisk SSD. For some reason, the SSD is suddenly invisible to my system. It does not show up in Disk Management, it does not show up in DiskPart and it does not show up in Device Manager. Nowhere to be seen.
The BIOS has never displayed the SSD drive, so I can't see it there either. I don't know if it's connected with SATA or PCIe. All I know is that it's built in somewhere, and I don't see it if I open the laptop case. I also know that it's not a HDD/SSD hybrid.
However, if I boot up from a recovery USB and start a command prompt, I am able to see the SSD drive in DiskPart. But if I do the same after booting the OS, it's not visible.
Here's some details:
I've installed ExpressCache and Intel Rapid Start Tech to work with the SSD. This is what I did to the SSD:
Cleaned the drive with DiskPartCreate partition msr size=6200 (partition for Intel Rapid Start, 6 GB RAM)Set the partition id=84 (hibernation partition)Installed ExpressCache, which automatically created a partition of the remaining unallocated space.
This setup worked fine for a few days, but somehow the SSD drive is now invisible.
I know my dvd drive was working a few weeks ago cause i used it to load up shogun 2 total war. My bios recognizes my driver but i dont see it any were in my device manager. BTW i was running windows 7 and had no issues with my dvd driver.
Update i click show hidden devices and i see my dvd but I can't find it anywhere when I look in my computer and when I put a disk in it doesn't boot up the cd or anything. I also asked it to check for updates but it says i have the latest updates for the drive and the device is working properly.
DVD drive not recognize by windows-8 after update
i installed WINDOWS-8 RP 64bit for trail on DG41RQ mobo (as well as on other PC (DG31PR) where there is no problem).
all was well till i updated the intel chipset driver (Intel Chipset Device Software version 9.1.2.1008)
and the BIOS version (to RQG4110H.86A.0017.EB)
now the system doesn't recognize my LG DVD drive (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) , (also in device manger and also in SAFE MODE) my BIOS dose recognize it and i CAN boot a live Win-XP from it.
i tried to roll back the IDE intel controllers drivers, but no change.
i have an IDE HDD as master, and the DVD Drive as SLAVE (recognized as such by BIOS).
my UEFI is desabled in BIOS (i don't know what it is actually).
(i have Activation Key (PRO) but i want to make sure all is well before activation)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Samsung SE-218 External DVD drive, and I cannot seem to access it in Windows 8.1 (though I have not had a chance to try it on any other computers yet, so there is always the possibility that something is wrong with the drive). Whenever I plug it in the light comes on and it will spin the disc for a bit, but nothing shows up in File Explorer or in Device Manager.

When I look the control panel the CD/DVD does not appears, but in the setup you can see that the DVD is working. Before I had win 7 and it work well.

Seagate 2TB drive mounted in a Thermaltake, Max 5 enclosure. The drive does not show in Windows 8. Does show when running Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) but shows as "Unallocated" without a drive letter. If run the Seagate drive tools, it shows up as unallocated, with drive letter "C". But there is obviously already a drive "C".

a friend of mine recently brought me a notebook,Medion AKOYA 99380(s6214t). After booting and using notebook for some time,computer reported a Hard Drive error.It said:"Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk."
The HDD is pretty new and it didn't seem to have any hardware issues. However,I did a clean instal of Windows 8.1 on the notebook(normally I installed Windows on the 64GB SD Card located in the "tablet" part of the notebook,so that way a person using it can use it as a tablet,too). Everything seemed to work fine, no HDD errors from Windows etc.,but then I opened My Computer and second Hard Drive wasn't there.I thought that it's a Drive Letter problem so I went into Disk Management however it did not solve the issue.
Then I tried everything(re-formatting,changing from NTFS to other formats etc.) but it did not seem to work.But all of sudden,after doing something, I don't really remember what I did that made the Computer see it, but it finally worked,so I just started testing everything. And after I used it as a tablet only for a while,I plugged that part in the notebook again and then Windows gave me an option to Update and Restart. I was a bit afraid of how it will turn out,so I wanted to shut down and turn on for a couple of times before updating, just to see if it will cause any issues. When I was sure that it worked perfect before the update, I clicked the option to update.
After the update was finished,Windows ran extremely slow and it detected my second HDD, however not the way it should.It only said "Local Disk (D: ) but I could not access and it didn't show how much memory on it was used. I re-assigned a letter to it after a format,but it did not work. Then I shut down the notebook,pull the second hard drive out,connect it to computer with usb so windows sees it as an external hard drive,and bam,everything worked. I don't think that the HDD is the problem,nor the SATA connectors,it's most likely that the motherboards driver need an update. However,when I checked for it's name,it said "Medion AKOYA s6124t". I tried all the downloads from Medion's page,but no succes in finding a proper driver.
I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop with Windows 8 on it. I have an external hard drive from a Windows 7 desktop. It recognizes the external hdd right away and I can access it but I can't figure out how to boot Windows 7 as the primary. I've tried changing boot order in bios but I've had no luck as it still boots Windows 8 first. Is there a way to use the Windows 7 as the primary drive ? Even a way to temporarly turn off the Windows 8 hard drive will work. I just need to access the Windows 7 hard drive without having to navigate through program files to have to open something.
