Anyways I've been having trouble since I got this laptop and basically my f1, f2 keys are like for screen brightness etc however if I press the FN key then it works how I want it to. How I can disable the FN function key to work opposite? also how do I set hot keys?
View 2 RepliesRecently did a clean install of windows 8 on my Asus K53SV and the function keys work fine except for the brightness keys.Actually, at first i loaded the windows 7 atk package and the brightness keys worked but the volume ones didn't then i got the latest atk package and now the brightness ones don't work (the lower brightness one just dims my monitor a bit and the increase brightness just makes it brighter a bit but doesn't change the brightness value) and the volume ones do.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.
After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.
I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.
This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.
I'd like to disable the Fn keys on my new HP latop. Or, better said, I'd like to have F1-F12 functionality normally, and when I press Fn, the Active Key Mode (screen brightness, audio, etc) is used. This was super simple in a BIOS environment and damn near impossible in a UEFI environment.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn any case, as the topic title says, some keys on my laptop occasionally stop working for some time, before returning back to normal. Sometimes simply pressing the key several times makes it work, sometimes holding it pressed for ten seconds or so works... Sometimes neither of these works. Occasionally, the key starts working it I press it in rapid succession with a key that does work. For example, pressing I, a non-working key, instantly after pressing J, which works perfectly. Sometimes I simply just randomly press keys on my keyboard until the non-working keys start working again. Backspacing seems to make it easier for them to go back to 'non-working state', although this may be just my imagination.
When any one of the keys that sometimes stop working stops working, none of those keys works. And when one starts working again, all of them start working. Although they may return back to non-working state right away. Although it might be just coincidence, and it doesn't actually work that way.
An incomplete list of the keys that occasionally stop working:
(Left) Ctrl, I, O, 2, 7.
There are others, I believe, at least one more number, but I have no way to check until they stop working. And at the time of typing this post, they seem to be working strangely well.Also, the keys are (almost?) always in the 'non-working state' when the laptop wakes from sleep mode and I have to input the password. Luckily, it offers the On-Screen Keyboard option, which, by the way, works perfectly.
I have been having problems with keyboards on my new Windows 8.1 build. I have been able to replicate this using 2 different USB keyboards (Logitech G15 and Razer BlackWidow).
Every once in a while when I am typing, a key will get "stuck" and type out several times on the screen. So for example, if I was typing the word update, it might look like this.
At first I thought it was the keyboard, but since I have switched and just had it happen on the new keyboard.
I have switched USB ports on my mobo and that didnt seem to work. I am using the default Windows drivers as well for the keyboard.
I recently have been having this issue where whenever I use the media keys (play, pause, rewind, and forward) and the volume keys on my quickfire pro it just refreshes my browser window. This has been happening recently and is very annoying.

My HDD currently makes a clicking noise at random times and I think it might be dying, so I want to be proactive. I plan on buying an SSD and cloning my HDD to it. I have many programs that require a license/key to use (mainly concerned with ArcGIS). After I make the switch, will my subscriptions still be active and ready to use? I have an acer laptop that came preloaded with windows 8 64bit. I am unable to turn on test mode. It says "Setting is protected by secure boot" or something similar.
An option in the boot settings (accessed by holding shift key while restarting) is there to turn off driver signing restrictions but it isn't working for me at all.
I did it on my desktop with windows 8.1 (not preloaded) in order to set my mouse USB port to a higher frequency with a non-digitally signed driver.
I cannot disable driver signature enforcement I have using CMD, by bcdedit.exe , still not working (bcdedit /set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS & bcdedit /set testsigning on ) even after running CMD as Administrator
Also, i have disable driver signature enforcement by setting ( general-advanced setting- etc) Still no effect
I just recently purchased a windows machine and I would like to disable the right click area of the trackpad. Since you can use two fingers to right click, I don't see any reason to have that area designated for that purpose.

At seemingly random times, the keys will stop using their normal function and start doing other things. For example, the F key will open up my files, hitting my down arrow key will minimize whatever window I have open. Oddly enough, the only way I have been able to figure out how to make this stop for the time is to open up my speech narrator, and then close it, and it makes everything go back to normal.

I looked into it and it seemed that my FN keys were reversed. So I followed these instructions: If the volume controls on your keyboard stops working, check the Human Interface Device Access service on your computer to make sure it is set to Automatic.
In the Start menu, type View local services.
From the Search Results list, select View local services.
In the Services dialog box, locate Human Interface Device Access. Make sure the status is set to "Started." If it is not started, click Start the service.
Right-click Human Interface Device Access and select Properties.
On the General tab, in the Startup type, select Automatic, and then click OK.
After doing this, I went to see if it worked and after hitting the volume keys a few times, my mouse disappeared. I restarted the computer, on the login screen the mouse worked fine. But, when I got into the computer the pointer was on the screen but would not move! Now I can't do anything.
Can I somehow copy the hidden activation files from Windows 8.0 Pro WMC to a Windows 8.1 Pro WMC installation and get it activated?! I have legit keys for Pro 8.0 with WMC but I would like to make a fresh install on a different system but with 8.1... any workarounds or do I just have to wait for windows update to get 8.1 and then copy the activation files... ?
