I'd like to disable the Fn keys on my new HP latop. Or, better said, I'd like to have F1-F12 functionality normally, and when I press Fn, the Active Key Mode (screen brightness, audio, etc) is used. This was super simple in a BIOS environment and damn near impossible in a UEFI environment.

At the beginning, when I have started to setup windows 8 ,everything goes okay until the product key, I get an error message saying 'We couldn't verify the product key. Check the installation media'
And I had tried to install windows 8 on another PC with having same product key then I have noticed the product key has worked on that Pc! and not working on my PC.
So I have tried several times to enter lots of keys. why my PC is not verify any product keys?
I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.
After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.
I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.
This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.
Anyways I've been having trouble since I got this laptop and basically my f1, f2 keys are like for screen brightness etc however if I press the FN key then it works how I want it to. How I can disable the FN function key to work opposite? also how do I set hot keys?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows 8 pro, and recently it comes up with a big "Upgrade to Windows 8.1" banner at login, with a link to the store, and you can't close the banner either, so you have to go to the store.
Is there a way to disable this?
I've tried 8.1 and I don't want to move on yet until the 8.1 drivers are properly released for my laptop... had issues with 8.1 the last couple of time I tried it.
I want to disable secure boot so i can use my new gpu but I've heard that you must disable secure boot and enable legacy boot. If I do this, can i still boot Windows 8 or do you have to reinstall windows 8?

I have an Acer AS4820TG with switchable Intel HD and Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics, and I'm 99% sure that drivers for one of these are causing a problem with installing 8.1 Pro. The screen turns black after the second restart, when Windows is "Getting devices ready". After this point it stays black.. no input of any sort affects it. I tried waiting it out for a while, and eventually I just did a hard shut down, at which point Windows reverted to 8. I'm hoping that if I can get it to install without the drivers, I can manually install them from the desktop.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently did a clean install of windows 8 on my Asus K53SV and the function keys work fine except for the brightness keys.Actually, at first i loaded the windows 7 atk package and the brightness keys worked but the volume ones didn't then i got the latest atk package and now the brightness ones don't work (the lower brightness one just dims my monitor a bit and the increase brightness just makes it brighter a bit but doesn't change the brightness value) and the volume ones do.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently made a Windows 8 and a Windows 8.1 installation disc from the ISO images on MSDN. Each image includes Core/Core VL and Pro/Pro VL, 32 and 64 bit editions of each. I have the installation keys for all of these installations, but I don't want to have to type an installation key every time I go to use this disc. I've tried adding an installation key using WinReducer8 (which I do not recommend), but it only adds one key, which means I cannot choose which edition I want to install.
When I made my AIO Windows 7 ISO, I had no issues, as Windows 7 doesn't force you to add an installation or product key; you select your desired edition and you're good to go. Attached Image 1 shows what I'm referring to.
Now, however, Windows 8 has to choose your edition by the product key you enter (well played, Microsoft), and I want to find a way around this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing Windows 8 at my desktop pc.Suddenly power cut occured and it caused the compute to shut down.Then when I restarted my pc again a messege appeared saying that the installation has been corrupted and it can't be continued and it doesn't log on.After that when I tried to re-install Windows 8 the setup got stuck at the "setup is starting" window.I waited overnight for it to go and the installation to start.But it doesn't happen.I have tried to re-install several times but the same problen happens again and again.So neither I can log into my computer now nor I can re-install windows.I don't know what to do.

I tried pressing all of the Function keys and it messed up all sorts of things on my computer. I found out that if I hold down the FN key the F keys will work properly. View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen ever i had the num lock on and only when its on all the num pad keys are bound to some other key and the space bars is bound to 0 if i type "1" it comes out "12". also the arrow key to go forward will jump all the way to the end of the page. i tried uninstalling the drivers, changing the layout and nothing in working.
I have the keyboard for about 2 months and its just started acting like this 2 days ago. also typematic rate wasn't there
everything was OK until I went to download updates from HP 1Gb worth and then restarting the computer to find I had no wireless recognition, and it seems the downloads didn't download. after a long session with HP and a system restore to before this fiasco, the wireless is back working, but when playing solitaire the fn and z won't let me undo which is a nuisance. also I now have the annoying red alert from the HP assistant wanting me to download.

Lenovo Z580, my brand new laptop that is, its UEFI based and vymrdal's ISO from MSDN is also created to be installed as an UEFI Install.
Here's my issue; I am a math and science teacher in a public middle school and am outfitting my class with thirty brand-new Lenovo touch computers. I consider myself above-average savvy with computers, having worked with every version of Windows extensively since the late 80s and DOS. The only OS that I haven't spent much time on is Windows 8.
These computers are all brand-new and of course have legal copies of Windows 8 -- irritatingly, though not yet updated to 8.1. Soo...It took me a larger part of one day just to get ONE of these computers ready for class use. It involved several stages of the Windows update/reboot dance, followed by removing myriad unneeded bloatware applications, setting up multiple child accounts on the machine, and finally installing some freeware educational materials needed for instruction. It was all unbelievably tedious!
I turned around and look at all the remaining twenty-nine computers with dread. Obviously I'm trying to work out some kind of shortcut to avoid having to spend my whole summer updating each of the new machines individually. In an ideal world, I would make some sort of image of the machine that I just spent several hours updating/configuring, and then replicate that across the other twenty-nine. In terms of hardware, this shouldn't be a problem since all of the machines are exactly the same make and model. But I anticipate other problems such as, for example, the serial number of the Windows version and the computer name will then be the same on all the machines and have to be adjusted. There very well could be other issues with replicated serial numbers, etc.
I'm thinking maybe I just have to bite the bullet and work at each individual computer one of the time. And then image them individually so that when the kids mess around with them, I can do an easy restore. How I could make this work?
When I run setup I get this message:
"Something happened, We can't tell if your PC is ready to continue installing windows 8. Try restarting setup"

I have a Dell Inspiron 7720. I have created an uefi bootable usn flash disk with rufus 1.4b
I'm trying to boot from it so i can create a Windows 8.1 uefi installation and the problem is that the usb flash disk wont boot.
I have secure boot enabled and legacy option rom disabled.
I have a HP Envy 4 Ultrabook and I want to install Windows 8 from scratch, I put the installation files on a flash drive from a DVD of Win 8 I had, but when I go to install it, it says the "We couldn't find any drives". I have tried using DiskPart within the CMD as well, but it only finds my flash drive when I run list disk. Also, my drives are completely formatted, and I accidentally wiped the recovery partition. I tried with a USB of Win 8 Pro, and it was fine, showing all of my drives correctly, but that version is linked to another PC, so I can't install it. Also, I booted into a Linux Mint live CD and tried to install it, it sees my hard drive correctly, but the Windows install does not, I can't figure this out, never encountered it before. Is Linux my only option at this point?

1- BIOS setting "legacy" and U E F I" boot from USB.
2- F 9 to choose boot order.. selected USB device
3- Installation starts for WIN 7
4- Driver is needed to continue, and i have no clue what it is..some one pointed me to . f 6 f l p y-x 64 because its an HP Envy...
5- Driver not found / wrong driver..
6- Shut down restart.......................
My DVD is Windows 7 ultimate X 32, X 64..
No matter what i cant boot form my USB /U E Fl /WIN 7 pen drive.seems like its not recognized or drivers for the USB chip set not installed.. Of course using the O E M DVD of win 7 fails. because of the G P T style.
I am trying to upgrade from windows 8 pro to windows 8.1 on a samsung laptop. The download completes and installation starts.
After a while the following message appears "you cant install windows on a usb flash drive with setup"
I am not actually trying to install to a flash drive. I contacted Microsoft and after 5 hours they said that I should connect to the internet with a cable and not by wireless in order to solve the problem (this didn't work of course and I had told them that it was an install problem and not a download problem).
Until very recently i was running Windows 8 with a 240 GB Sandisk SSD as a primary and a 2 TB Western Digital Green HDD as a storage. I decided to set up a RAID 1 setup so i purchased a second 2 TB HDD and installed it.
My intent was to run windows 8 off the 240 SSD as a primary and have a RAID 1 setup for my 2TB HDDs.
I learnt that my data configuration was set to AHCI. I decided to do a complete clean install and change the sata configuration in BIOS to RAID.
After successfully creating a RAID volume using my 2TB HDDs i proceeded to install Windows off my primary. I am however having difficulties in that it will not allow me to install windows on either drive.
Because it does not contain enough free space. Clearly I have enough free space... [URL] ....
What should I do? I want to do a dual boot, so I can keep Windows 7 in case I don't like 8.1...
I formatted and deleted that partition and I tried again with 201gb, and no luck. [URL] ....
In Windows 7 I could adjust the thickness/width of the windows borders.
In Windows 8 I could not find this option in
Personalization-->Window color and appearance-->Advanced appearance any more.
Im trying to install Windows 8 (Not 8.1) but it gets stuck at the booting screen (Where setup shuold load files)

I am trying to setup a new Windows 8 computer that is going to be a gift. I need to go through the setup procedure so I can install some software which is also part of the gift. How can I do this without having to use a Microsoft account, or at least with leaving the least amount of account remnants for the new user?

Initially I installed windows on my ssd (c: ) and windows created the sysres partition on my unformatted hd (without telling me anything). After some trouble I managed to be able to boot from ssd directly without going through the sysres partition on the hd. Now if possible I'd like to recreate the sysres on the ssd (by disconnecting my hd so that windows has no other options than creating this on the ssd). If a try a system refresh it tells me it would wipe away all my user installed apps.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install the printer software for an HP Laserjet printer and can't get it installed. I've even had an HP tech person try to install it via remote control and he couldn't. I was told that something on my system is preventing the installation.
I ran sfc /scannow and it found corrupted files that it couldn't repair. I would be happy to send any log files that may be needed.
I have tried updating my Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit, upgraded from Windows 8 Pro) with the new "Update 1" (KB2919355) but it always fails with ERROR code 8007005 (or 80073712).
What I have tried do to fix:
Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic (that e.g. removes files from C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload and cleans Windows update history metadata info)DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
After all of this, still the update (KB2919355) fails
There must be something that Microsoft needs to fix, there are xxxxxxxxxxxx amount of similar complains and reports out there...
