View 2 RepliesRecently did a clean install of windows 8 on my Asus K53SV and the function keys work fine except for the brightness keys.Actually, at first i loaded the windows 7 atk package and the brightness keys worked but the volume ones didn't then i got the latest atk package and now the brightness ones don't work (the lower brightness one just dims my monitor a bit and the increase brightness just makes it brighter a bit but doesn't change the brightness value) and the volume ones do.

What should I do?
I have a new instance of Windows 8.1 on a surface pro 3 and I can't get the folder icons of my OneDrive folder and and of the folders in it to change and stay changed.
First, I changed the special folders (documents, pictures, music, etc.) to point to my OneDrive folders (why it doesn't do this automatically is beyond me). TO do this, I opened up the special user folder (the one with the little dude in the icon in the navigation pane in Explorer). But, they all still have plain old vanilla folders. So, off to change the icons.
Second, I navigated to my OneDrive folder (still in its default location) right clicked, went to the customization tab, hit "Change Icon...", navigated to "C:WindowsSystem32imageres.dll" and selected the icons that I wanted. I did this for every special folder. Easy, right?
Not so much. If I then navigate directly to the OneDrive folder, everything looks all good; icons are intact. But, if I navigate to the special user folder (the one with the little dude) the icons are not there. Through some combination of closing down folders, restarting explorer, or even a system restart, the icons will show up. Throuh some combination of the same, the icons will quickly revert back to plain old vanilla.
Now, I tried to just reset defaults on the new targets of the special folders (In the OneDrive) That doesn't seem to work for all of them, and it's not permanent for any of them.
Windows 8 search function ...
I have a bunch of text files and I need to search for the following string for example within the files:
now()
What I need to do to search for this string?
It seems like Windows 8 ignores just about all non-alphanumeric characters when searching.
If I can't search within files for a simple string like the above I'm screwed!
I have a number of special fonts (all are .ttf) that I installed, and some that came with software for use with the programs. All of these fonts worked fine when installed on my Windows 7 64-bit computer.
I have installed all of these fonts on my Windows 8 64-bit computer, and some of the characters on the fonts do not show. Windows has substituted other characters in place of these.
Yet when I open the font in a third party program like Font Creator, all of the characters on the font appear true.
Is there a setting in Windows 8 that I need to adjust so the characters will show as they are supposed to?
I have dell 14r special edition with win8. i'm trying to partition the drive and create extended partition. however the factory image is stored at the end of drive and all of the drive is considered as primary drive. i've two options

I want to have an icon(shortcut) on my start screen that opens a rom file with the emulator with just one click. Is that possible? This way I could have every single game(rom) on the start screen to choose from instead of going to desktop, open the emulator and select(search ) the rom.

I have legit keys for Pro 8.0 with WMC but I would like to make a fresh install on a different system but with 8.1... any workarounds or do I just have to wait for windows update to get 8.1 and then copy the activation files... ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a Toshiba laptop that came with pre-installed Windows 8. I went into the "Bios" and switched from UEFI to CSM, Now my laptop just doesn't work. I am on a public computer posting this because mine will just not boot at all. It won't even show the boot logo, and I cannot get back into the Bios to switch it back to UEFI. I am not sure what information I could add on to here to be more clear other than I screwed up bad. The laptop didn't come with a disk, and I tried to hold 0 while powering up the laptop hoping that it would reset to factory settings, but no luck there either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to disable my function key abilities completely so games or other apps can use them normally. Windows seem to take over these functions with the stuff like brightness, sound, turn airplane mode on/off.. what i need is a registry hack or something to to fix this. There is a app in control panel that allows you to access some, not all of these functions.. Windows Mobility Center - but still you cannot turn them off at all. I do not need or want any of these features on my function keys.
These are shortcut keys manufactures started putting on keyboards a few years back.. They used to be called Multimedia keyboards - these functions were never standard for a keyboard. I feel like MS has some nerve taking over my function keys like this in a way where i cannot easily turn these off.
have a Registry hacks section. I used to use another forum - forgot it's name for use with XP.
What do I have to do to get the product keys for the installed operating system? What do I do to re-install in case of a failure. Where is my copy of the software so I can re-install it?

My issue is the right parenthesis key, the underscore key, and the question mark key stop working every now and then and it is getting more and more frequent. I haven't done anything to this laptop at all, It hasn't been dropped, hit, spilled upon or anything.

I have had windows update set to check for updates and notify me so I can choose when, or in some cases if, to install them. This evening, I checked and the option had been changed to automatically install all updates.
How it could have happened?
Win 8.1 has added a piece in brackets to files on my new PC. Now none of my slide shows work because each jpg has this bracketed info in the file name. I have tried overwriting the files with originals from a backup but these too are changed. Can I stop this happening? Is there a bit of code to delete the bracketed part of the many thousands of files affected?
I have loads of Nero nvc files that I can no longer open because of this name change.
When I was installing an arabic keyboard for fun, I managed to set the entire system language to it, instead of just the keyboard layout. Using the thing on the task bar doesn't work.

I've recently made a Windows 8 and a Windows 8.1 installation disc from the ISO images on MSDN. Each image includes Core/Core VL and Pro/Pro VL, 32 and 64 bit editions of each. I have the installation keys for all of these installations, but I don't want to have to type an installation key every time I go to use this disc. I've tried adding an installation key using WinReducer8 (which I do not recommend), but it only adds one key, which means I cannot choose which edition I want to install.
When I made my AIO Windows 7 ISO, I had no issues, as Windows 7 doesn't force you to add an installation or product key; you select your desired edition and you're good to go. Attached Image 1 shows what I'm referring to.
Now, however, Windows 8 has to choose your edition by the product key you enter (well played, Microsoft), and I want to find a way around this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter last week' update I started seeing a lot of "The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from auto start to demand start." Even ID 7040 in my system event log.
It triggers when laptop is idle (win 8 pro 64 bit), the CPU usage goes to 30% and higher and the event log gets pounded with the above messages.
Just starting using Windows 8, changed computer name and now when I start up I can not log in. If I open arrow to left of log in picture there are two pictures, one I can log in with and the other no.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an HP laptop that came with Windows 8 installed. One of the automatic updates ran and changed pathways to my files. If I click on Libraries, my documents, music, and pics that were there before the upgrade are not there now. I have to click c:/users/myusername/ then whichever folder I'm looking for. Is there a way to get that back so all my files go to one set of library folders instead of having a new set?
The update almost crashed the whole laptop. Also corrupted my save points and had to do a new restore point once the system was finally brought back up. I'm tracking down how to fix my app store tile now. The update also deleted all my tiles I had on my start screen.
The only thing that has changed is that I upgraded my OS recently.
I have an 2.4 GHz Wireless Laser Mobile Mouse. Originally after the upgrade, the left button caused right clicks and vice versa. I found a workaround by changing the Windows 8 settings to "Right Primary Button" while in the control panel, the device is configured for the left hand. If I select "Left..." and right respectively, I get the reverse. The scroll wheel also does nothing when clicked. Sometimes when I read articles I click it so I can move my mouse up and down to scroll the page without pushing any keys.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse driver and HID driver with no luck.
I just bought my first Windows 8 laptop, a Lenovo e540. Above the dedicated number pad is a key with a calculator printed on it. Pressing this key of course brings up the 'Calculator' program that comes with Widows. I however strongly dislike said program and have no intention to use it. Instead I aim to have this calculator key open up my preferred calculator, which at this point is SpeQ.
So I created a shortcut for SpeQ and in the shortcut panel of the properties window I set it to the calculator button (which says its "ctrl + alt + F" in the shortcut box). I then found the shortcut for 'calculator' and set the shortcut key to 'None'. BUT... even after double checking that the settings were as intended and restarting the computer, the calculator key still opens up the old program. Additionally, despite "ctrl + Alt + F" appearing in the text box next to shortcut key, typing this opens neither program.
Just installed 8.1 and the "This PC" section of the navigation pane in file explorer has changed. In addition to listing the disk drives, it now lists six folders. how to remove the folders from the drive list?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a custom built system running Windows 8. I recently changed the Sata port config, changing one of my drives to another port that was supposed to be for a case esata port. After this, my hard drives would not work together and the computer would randomly crash when I try to access My Computer or anything that makes the hard drives run. It's really hard to use as my programs/files are spread across these three drives.
