Can I somehow copy the hidden activation files from Windows 8.0 Pro WMC to a Windows 8.1 Pro WMC installation and get it activated?! I have legit keys for Pro 8.0 with WMC but I would like to make a fresh install on a different system but with 8.1... any workarounds or do I just have to wait for windows update to get 8.1 and then copy the activation files... ?
After I upgraded to 8.1, I am not getting any sounds when hitting the individual keys on the onscreen keyboard. I have looked all through GodMode regarding 'Sounds' but can't find anything to enlighten me. It is turned on in "PC settings".
Recently did a clean install of windows 8 on my Asus K53SV and the function keys work fine except for the brightness keys.Actually, at first i loaded the windows 7 atk package and the brightness keys worked but the volume ones didn't then i got the latest atk package and now the brightness ones don't work (the lower brightness one just dims my monitor a bit and the increase brightness just makes it brighter a bit but doesn't change the brightness value) and the volume ones do.
I've had a search but am still a bit confused. Before I hose my system, can I just check a couple of things? I have legit win8 pro + MCE x64. I have the x64 WZOR ISO. I'd like to upgrade from 8 to 8.1 without losing anything (data or programs).
1. Is this possible?
2. Do I mount the ISO & run setup? Or do I have to burn & boot off the ISO?
3. if I run setup from within windows, it tells me my key isn't valid for this version of windows. Do I just need to use the 'universal' professional key (XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB) and then switch for my MCE key after upgrading?
Is it possible to activate WMC version of Windows 8.1 Pro only if you have a legit Windows 8 Pro WMC key from Microsoft? If no, then where are you getting the keys from?
Did set KMS host to lunar or thoosa, win8kms, tried to activate and it always returns 0xC004F074: Product could not be activated. No KMS could be contacted.
I can trace the kms servers ... Is it not possible to install legit W8 Pro activated with MS and VL KMS-Office ?
I have a legit Windows 8 Pro key which works on "en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso". I've downloaded "Windows_8.1_EN-US_x64.ISO" which is the Core/Pro version posted in the stickies repository but it won't accept my key.
Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:
Couldn't install Windows 8.1
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104
Try again Cancel
Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
I want to disable my function key abilities completely so games or other apps can use them normally. Windows seem to take over these functions with the stuff like brightness, sound, turn airplane mode on/off.. what i need is a registry hack or something to to fix this. There is a app in control panel that allows you to access some, not all of these functions.. Windows Mobility Center - but still you cannot turn them off at all. I do not need or want any of these features on my function keys.
These are shortcut keys manufactures started putting on keyboards a few years back.. They used to be called Multimedia keyboards - these functions were never standard for a keyboard. I feel like MS has some nerve taking over my function keys like this in a way where i cannot easily turn these off.
have a Registry hacks section. I used to use another forum - forgot it's name for use with XP.
What do I have to do to get the product keys for the installed operating system? What do I do to re-install in case of a failure. Where is my copy of the software so I can re-install it?
I have had this windows 8 laptop for half a year now. I didn't have any problems with it until AFTER the 30 day warranty expired. My issue is the right parenthesis key, the underscore key, and the question mark key stop working every now and then and it is getting more and more frequent. I haven't done anything to this laptop at all, It hasn't been dropped, hit, spilled upon or anything.
Windows 8 moves to BIOS-based product keys Product keys for Windows 8 computers aren't printed on a sticker. They're encrypted in the BIOS. How might that affect you?
My question: is this possible..?? Can a OS write to BIOS..?
If it true you can NEVER switch to a other OS..!!! You need to buy a new PC...

I've recently made a Windows 8 and a Windows 8.1 installation disc from the ISO images on MSDN. Each image includes Core/Core VL and Pro/Pro VL, 32 and 64 bit editions of each. I have the installation keys for all of these installations, but I don't want to have to type an installation key every time I go to use this disc. I've tried adding an installation key using WinReducer8 (which I do not recommend), but it only adds one key, which means I cannot choose which edition I want to install.
When I made my AIO Windows 7 ISO, I had no issues, as Windows 7 doesn't force you to add an installation or product key; you select your desired edition and you're good to go. Attached Image 1 shows what I'm referring to.
Now, however, Windows 8 has to choose your edition by the product key you enter (well played, Microsoft), and I want to find a way around this.
I have MSI CX480 and i just upgraded to windows 8 from 7.. my function keys are working before but now that i'm in 8 its not working. i already install my drivers but still, its not working..
I just bought my first Windows 8 laptop, a Lenovo e540. Above the dedicated number pad is a key with a calculator printed on it. Pressing this key of course brings up the 'Calculator' program that comes with Widows. I however strongly dislike said program and have no intention to use it. Instead I aim to have this calculator key open up my preferred calculator, which at this point is SpeQ.
So I created a shortcut for SpeQ and in the shortcut panel of the properties window I set it to the calculator button (which says its "ctrl + alt + F" in the shortcut box). I then found the shortcut for 'calculator' and set the shortcut key to 'None'. BUT... even after double checking that the settings were as intended and restarting the computer, the calculator key still opens up the old program. Additionally, despite "ctrl + Alt + F" appearing in the text box next to shortcut key, typing this opens neither program.
I've just upgraded from win8 to win 8.1 using the windows update (store), my questions are :
1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.
2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?
A few days ago I went to turn up the volume from my keyboard and it would TAB me over to a different item on my screen. I tried pressing all of the Function keys and it messed up all sorts of things on my computer. I found out that if I hold down the FN key the F keys will work properly. How can I get it back to normal?
I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.
After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.
I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.
This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.
So I was typing something into the search bar for google chrome and when i touched certain key it opened up the app menu or closed the who window entirely. the same happened when i tried to play a game off of steam, why is this happening and whats the best way to stop it?
I have a Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 with windows 8, and none of the function keys are working, although they used to work. Windows 8 does not have flash cards, nor is there a keyboard option on computer settings.
when ever i had the num lock on and only when its on all the num pad keys are bound to some other key and the space bars is bound to 0 if i type "1" it comes out "12". also the arrow key to go forward will jump all the way to the end of the page. i tried uninstalling the drivers, changing the layout and nothing in working.
I have the keyboard for about 2 months and its just started acting like this 2 days ago. also typematic rate wasn't there
everything was OK until I went to download updates from HP 1Gb worth and then restarting the computer to find I had no wireless recognition, and it seems the downloads didn't download. after a long session with HP and a system restore to before this fiasco, the wireless is back working, but when playing solitaire the fn and z won't let me undo which is a nuisance. also I now have the annoying red alert from the HP assistant wanting me to download.
After installing Windows 8 Pro my @ and " symbols are on the wrong keys, how do I swap them. I have checked the language for my keyboard and all is good.
Anyways I've been having trouble since I got this laptop and basically my f1, f2 keys are like for screen brightness etc however if I press the FN key then it works how I want it to. How I can disable the FN function key to work opposite? also how do I set hot keys?
I'd like to disable the Fn keys on my new HP latop. Or, better said, I'd like to have F1-F12 functionality normally, and when I press Fn, the Active Key Mode (screen brightness, audio, etc) is used. This was super simple in a BIOS environment and damn near impossible in a UEFI environment.
This is really random. The keys are messing up. They either won't work or type double. I can only presume it's a virus. I've tried to gain access to my password protected user account via my guest account but I can't type the password in because of the way it's messing up. I want to use windows defender to try to sort it out.
I bought an HP laptop with windows 8 a few months ago, and since day one I have had this issue. At seemingly random times, the keys will stop using their normal function and start doing other things. For example, the F key will open up my files, hitting my down arrow key will minimize whatever window I have open. Oddly enough, the only way I have been able to figure out how to make this stop for the time is to open up my speech narrator, and then close it, and it makes everything go back to normal.
I think my toddler messed with some buttons on my computer today and now it is all wrong. First I tried using the keyboard to turn up the volume but this did not work. I looked into it and it seemed that my FN keys were reversed. So I followed these instructions: If the volume controls on your keyboard stops working, check the Human Interface Device Access service on your computer to make sure it is set to Automatic.
In the Start menu, type View local services.
From the Search Results list, select View local services.
In the Services dialog box, locate Human Interface Device Access. Make sure the status is set to "Started." If it is not started, click Start the service.
Right-click Human Interface Device Access and select Properties.
On the General tab, in the Startup type, select Automatic, and then click OK.
After doing this, I went to see if it worked and after hitting the volume keys a few times, my mouse disappeared. I restarted the computer, on the login screen the mouse worked fine. But, when I got into the computer the pointer was on the screen but would not move! Now I can't do anything.
