Dell :: Upgrading XPS 8500 To Windows 8 - System Failed When Adding WMC

Jan 12, 2013

I am trying to upgrade an xps 8500 to windows 8 pro. It's an i7 system with 16 gig RAM. It was running windows 7 64 bit.

I made the first upgrade. It seemed to work fine. I updated drivers but when I attempted to add the windows media center the system failed -- on reboot it indicated the update could not be made and the previous version of windows 8 pro had been restored. I tried again, and this time it indicated that there were corrupted files and the system could no longer boot (error was 0xc000021a). It was not able to fix the disk issue automatically.

With Microsoft support I created a windows 8 pro boot drive on USB. At first the software would not even recognize a drive on which to install the operating system. That was resolved, and I was able to install windows 8 pro. But now every time I restart, the system goes back to the original problem (corrupt files), meaning I have to reinstall windows 8 pro, and so on. I have formatted the HDD as part of the installs: Partition 3 of Drive 0 (the other partitions are: Drive 0 partition 1 (1 meg used) OEM (reserved), partition 2 recovery (8.2 meg used) and drive 1 29.8 meg unallocated.

Windows installs updates (22 in number) automatically on restart, and these may be the source of the problem.

I have checked the drivers. They all seem up-to-date. The Bios is A09 (I think, in any case it is the latest version).

Dell :: XPS 8500 Win 8 System Image Fails?

Dec 6, 2012

I have a brand new Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 8. I did my initial software load and wanted to create a system image. The image fails with error code 0x80780119. This is the sequence I ran:

1) Control Panel

2) Windows 7 File Recovery

3) Create a system image

4) On a hard disk (External hard drive selected with 1.36 TB free space)

5) Program states that the following drives will be backed up without allowing me to add or remove drives (EFI System Partition, OS(C:)(System, and WINRETOOLS(System). I hit "start backup"

6) Create a system image box opens and it starts to run the process and then errors out and says the backup failed. The error message says there is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location and it lists error code 0x80780119.

I believe it's not a problem with the destination drive where the final system image will be created. It has to be a problem with one of the partitions on the one and only hard drive inside the machine. Using Disk Management I can see the following partitions on the harddrive:

500MB EFI System Partition

40MB OEM Partition

500MB Recovery Partition

1854.75GB NTFS

7.12GB Recovery Partition

Dell XPS 8500 - Windows 8 Opens Up Drives On Bootup

Apr 19, 2013

I just bought this Dell XPS 8500 with Win 8 on it and although I'm not that happy with this OS I guess there is a learning curve so I'll try for awhile.

For some reason, after I had uninstalled Mcafee from the start up screen and also added a few items to the startup screen, when I reboot or do a cold boot, instead of getting the startup screen, I am getting the desktop along with about 5 disk partitions and a couple programs that I installed. While this is not bad since I can just "x" out of them, it's irritating and wonder how I can fix this. I would like to ultimately just boot up to the desktop if possible without anything else opening up.

Dell :: New XPS 8500 Windows 8 Has Intermittent Black Screen

Apr 7, 2013

My brand new XPS 8500 with WIndows 8 has an intermittent blackscreen. Only way to get past it is to power down and power up the PC. Using a Dell 23" monitor. Since machine and monitor are brand new, I will contact Dell tomorrow to return. I don't relish resolving an intermittent problem over the phone with India support. I have searched these forums for blackscreen topics and there are several but no definitive solution.

Dell :: XPS 8500 - How To Transfer Windows 8 OEM License To Other Machine

Feb 11, 2013

I recently bought a Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 8 on it. I did a clean install of Windows 7 on that machine and would like to use the Windows 8 OEM license on it on my Dell Inspiron 17r SE laptop.

I tried typing in my key to do a clean install on the laptop but I got this error message:

The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation.  Enter a different product key.

I bought these machines and therefore paid for the software, I should be able to install them on any machine I want.  All of my machines are Dell, why can't I do this?  What's going on?

Windows update service is auto - running

Volume Shadow copy is manual - running

Dell diagnostic program reports no error.

Network / Sharing :: Adding Windows 8 Computer To Existing System

Mar 26, 2013

I've had a home network with a Windosw7 PC, sometimes a windows 7 laptop, an Imac, and 2 Mac Powerbooks. I never did anything special to set up a network, I just connected them all to the router. I also have a network printer, a Cannon, which they all print to.

I added a new Windows 8 computer and during the set up process added the printer connection. After doing that, none of the other computers could print to the printer, they all got a "printer offline message. So I deleted it from the Windows 8 profile and it worked for the others again.

Is there a way to set up the printer for the windows 8 computer without cutting off the others?

Also, I'd like to homeshare the two windows 7 and the windows 8 computers, is there a way to do that and have networking still with the MAC computers - I'm particularly concerned with the printer. We don't really need to share files between the macs and pcs.

No Keyboard / Mouse After Adding Media Center - Can't Restore System

Oct 27, 2012

I upgraded my H T PC to Windows 8 earlier today. Everything was working fine, no issues with the install right up until I added the Media Center feature. After that installed and rebooted, I have no mouse or keyboard. No mouse cursor, nothing. I've tried different keyboards, different USB ports, everything.

Since, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom they removed the F 8 functionality I can't even get into safe mode to do a system restore. Their solution is "boot into windows and use recovery options to restart into safe mode" - great, so what do I do if Windows has disabled the mouse & keyboard?

I can force it into the basic recovery mode by just resetting it a couple times but it won't let me do a system restore from in there, it is telling me the drive is locked.

What do I do? How else can I get into system restore?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 System Image Backup Failed

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, System Image Backup failed resulting in the following message:

"The backup failed. There is not enough space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. - (0x80780119)"

However, there was enough free space in the external hard disk: 762.82 GB.

Windows Disk Management, and other tools, provided the following information about the partition structure of Disk 0 (238.35 GB):

Type File System Capacity Free Space Recovery NTFS 499 MB 499 MB
EFI System Partition FAT32 300 MB 300 MB Microsoft Reserved Partition Other 128 MB

Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition NTFS 216.16 GB 144.76 GB

I am suspicious about having two 350 MB recovery partitions.

Dell Studio 1535 Laptop / Windows 8.1 Upgrade Failed - How To Diagnose

Sep 2, 2013

Upgrading from Windows 8 ProWMC on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. It ran for a couple of hours and was in the 'a few more things' stage when it decided to fail and roll everything back.

Now that it's back where I started, where do I start looking to try to find out what happened? I'm hoping it put some log files somewhere.

My first guess is that it's third-party drivers, will start by looking at those. There are several things which are old but still were working with Windows 8; I suppose one or more of these might not be compatible?

Maintenance :: Creating Windows 8 System Image - Backup Failed

Jun 6, 2013

I started to use the "Create System Image" of the "Windows 7 File Recovery" on my Windows 8 laptop. But after the screen which flashes the total size that would be required, when I ask it to start the process expecting it to prompt me for the 1st DVD, it flashes the message, - "The back-up failed. The system is not ready. (0x80070015) " . I am trying this on an out-of-the-box laptop with pre-installed Windows 8. Also tried it by disabling the anti-virus, but to no avail.

Then I tried to start the process with a 4.7 GB blank DVD already in place. Then it flashed the message "Insert a blank media bigger than 1 GB". Since I expected it take anywhere between 3-8 DVDs, I kept about 9 DVDs ready. I also inserted a USB pen-drive of 16 GB and tried to create the system image. Again it flashed the same message of insert a blank media greater than 1 GB in F: (same drive as USB) -??????? I mean the USB is already in place and has been assigned the drive letter as F:. How can I insert a blank media there ??

I am using Windows 8 Single Language. I was able create a repair disc without issues, though.

As I recently upgraded the RAM from 3 to 8 GB, I would like to use a 64 bit system now.I tried to boot from the installation DVD and the windows flag appears. After several seconds, a message on a blue background pops up: "Your PC ran into a problem. We are collecting some information and then we will restart it for you." That is the message, as fas as I can remember. It is only shown for one second and then the laptop reboots automatically. I have got no chance to get into an installation menu. I already tried a BIOS update from A03 to the most recent version A16 with no success. Boot mode is set to legacy at the moment, I also tried UEFI temporarily, with no change...

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 To 8.1 Upgrade Failed - Must Upgrade System BIOS

Jul 3, 2014

Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:

Couldn't install Windows 8.1

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:

Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Try again Cancel

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.

Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:

This PC doesn't meet system requirements

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
