Debugging :: BSOD When Gaming Become Increasingly Frequent
Aug 13, 2013
I have been experiencing a number of crashes recently when gaming which have been become increasingly frequent. Initially I assumed it may be due to overheating, but all temperatures were normal when checked with coretemp and nvidiainspector. Attached is the SF file.

My daughter plays on Friv, a website with hundreds of games, most of them are FLASH based.
It frequently creates BSOD on my Win 8.1 desktop computer
I'm tried to use Google Chrome and the result is the same.
When I look with BlueScreenViewer, I can see it is always the exact same error.
It happened in in Win 8, Win 8.1 Beta, and now Win 8.1
Each time the OS was fully installed from scratch.
I have the latest BIOS from ASUS as well as all latest drivers I could find.

I bought my Sony VAIO flip on 12 Feb this year. At the beginning of April it started frequently crashing (a few times a day when using it on my commute and in the evening). It (almost) always crashes with a BSOD, but no error code, and no crash dump generated. About a quarter of the time, upon restarting from the crash, its says "Couldn't start Windows. Internal SSD not found". I'd keep restarting it and it would fail to start with the same error. If I leave it for a while (30 mins+), it restarts fine, until the next crash.
Given the 'SSD not found' errors, I had assumed it was a hardware fault with the drive failing intermittently. This would also explain the lack of crash dumps if the drive had issues and Windows couldn't write to it. However, I've read around and found some SSDs displaying this behaviour after a crash due to unexpected power loss to the drive, so I'm now wondering if this is a symptom not a cause.
Furthermore, windows restore does show windows updated some drivers at the beginning of April when the crashes started.
I did have one crash with and error code and a dump (24th April) but this is the exception. From the event log (occurrences of id 41 "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first") I can see crashes a few times a day every day I've used the computer in April:

I had BSODs happen occasionally but now they are happening like 3-6 times per day, sometimes back-to-back.
The list of error messages I've recorded for the ones that happened while sitting at my desk are:
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (dxgkrnl.sys)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (amdppm.sys or hidusb.sys)
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (dxgkrnl.sys)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
ATTEMPTED_EXECUTED_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY
RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
TIMER_OF_DPC_INVALID (usbport.sys)
I have multiple browsers open and I play some browser based games. Usually not too much else running and hogging resources that I am aware of.

I've had a HP Envy m6 laptop for a while now with windows 8 pro and I've noticed that i'm getting very frequent BSOD (Can't be virus since I have Bitdefender). It seems as though they occur 95% of the time while I play the game League of Legends.
I checked out my dump files using BlueScreenView and noticed that i'm getting a variety of errors (REFERENCE_BY_POINTER, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) caused by a variety of drivers (iaStorA.sys, tcpip.sys, ntoskrnl.exe).

I have frequent reboots (only today: 3).
My new windows 8.1 notebook stops working, then restarts (sometimes I can have ALT+TAB working, but mouse and/or keyboard stops responding and after 5 minutes PC restarts).
By the way I changed my pagefile configuration forcing it to 16 gb (so dump files will be created).

This is basically a fresh install. I only really installed steam along with the drivers for my motherboard and gpu. It originally did it while on steam only but has since done it other places. Last night was particularly bad, as it would BSOD and then sit on a black screen while trying to load up. Turning it off and on eventually started it back up. Then it did a weird thing where it would keep rebooting itself. Eventually I shut it down for the night.

I'm facing BSODs on my system. It mostly appears when I'm using Chrome, especially using Youtube or any flash applications (like games on Facebook). In games it also crashes from time to time (e.g. Assasins Creed 4).
Programs for controlling the fan of my R9-280x lead to crashes a lot, I deleted those already (e.g. Sapphire Trixx).
My system:
Windows 8 - 64 bit
8 GB RAM
Sapphire Vapor-X R9-280x graphics
Intel i5 4670K
Samsung SSD 840 pro Evo (I already checked this one and optimized it, but this didn't do the trick).
Nothing is overclocked, temps should be fine.

I've just bought a new Acer Aspire V3 772G. My laptop crashes or reboot by itself every times i play a video game. Sometimes 5 minutes or 2 hours later.
-I update all the drivers from the Acer Website.
-I've updated the Bios to 1.15 (the latest).
-I've already run a memory test with Memtest86 during 10 hours : no single error.
-I've run a CPU test with intel with intel Processor diagnostic. There's a warning which says
CPU Frequency Test Passed with Warning!!!
The processor frequency could be affected by power management features. In order to ensure the processor frequency is not affected by a power management setting, enter BIOS, load defaults, and disable any 'Over-Clocking' or power management features that may affect processor frequency. Also, set any software applications which control power management features to default.
I didn't overclocked my CPU. I don't know whether it's overclocked or not. It's a second hand laptop.
-I've tried to test my graphic card with AtiTool but when i run it it says ''The Kernel Mode driver does not seem to be running A device driver is required for communication with your video hardware.
-I've also run a hard disk test with HDtune and it seems that i have 381Mb as bad sector.
My specs : IntelCore i7-4702MQ 2.2ghz with turbo boost up to 3.2ghz
Nvidia Ge force gt750m

I've been having this issue with my PC for the last 6 months or so. I attributed it to an aging graphics card but had a rude awaking when I purchased and installed a new GPU yesterday and the problem still persisted.
The issue didn't bother me too much as I don't game too often but I just bought a new R9 280x card and was hoping to catch up on some games I've missed.
The issue that I get is when gaming (and using Video Editing software - PC BSOD's when rendering a video from After Effects CC for example) is that after about 20 - 25 min of running the game the PC will just crash and I'll get a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and the PC will restart. This happens every time regardless of the game played or settings.
My PC temps are pretty normal even under stress.. max the CPU goes to is around 68 and the GPU around the same.
My PC SPecs are:
Windows 8.1 x64
Intel i7-930 2.8GHz
AMD Radeon R9 280x
16GB RAM
128GB Samsung SSD
2TB HDD
Things I've tried:
- Reinstall Windows
- Use only the SSD
- Use only the HDD (Bought new HDD)
- Switch out the RAM Sticks w/ New Ones
- Run MemTest and other software (everything came back clean)
- Yesterday I installed the new GPU, Reinstalled Windows, Updated all Drives and Windows Updates and the issue is still present.

It is just a matter of time before the system crashes. Sometimes I can play a whole evening without a crash, sometimes it crashes every 5 minutes. It does not seem to coincide with what happens in the game and it can be an old game with minimum graphics or something else on max, the crash is the same. As it crashes, screen goes black, it generates a hum on the speakers, and all I can do is to push the power button until it shuts off the power. Another problem is that there is NO dump file whatsoever. Minidump settings are all validated, but no dump gets created. I hope the SF debug Tool is enough.

I've been suffering a high volume of BSODs - both before and after I switched hard drive last week.
I'm getting Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error on almost every first startup. In addition, I often get a Page Fault in Unpaged Area BSOD when gaming (primarily Max Payne 3) - dxgmms1.sys has been referenced on more than one of these occasions.
Dump file log (hopefully attached).

Bought a new laptop almost a year ago, i was never able to find the cause of the crashes.
Here some specs
- Intel i7-3537U CPU
- Asus K56CB motherboard
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 740m Dedicated GPU
- Intel HD Graphics 4000 Integrated GPU
- 4gb 1600 Ram, single stick
- Windows 8.1 (had the same problem with win 8)
On every game i play i get random freezes, random crashes, random BSODs, some games do crash more frequently than others, I've tried older drivers, I've also formatted my pc but the problem is still there...I am not using any antivirus, windows defender is enough for me.
What gets on my nerves the most is that even on old games like quake live do crash and sometime it also gives me BSODs, the fps are constant and quite high but i randomly get freezes (about 0,5 - 1 second long)...
another example, im playing SMITE, i get 80-150 fps but the game crashes every 2-5 mins, this game rarely gives me BSODs, when im lucky the game wont crash for 20-30min, but its very rare. the gpu can reach 80-85C. With "crash" i mean black screen with a window saying "Game.exe has stopped working"
There are other odds things happening on this notebook, for example i cant access to the bios while booting, i can only access to it once i log to my windows account, another strange thing is when i left click any file sometime it takes 10-15 seconds to get the "open, open with, copy, paste, cut etc.. window opened". I've also noticed that sometime while gaming my disk usage get to 100% for an instant and when that happens i get a lag spike/freeze...
If no way to find the source of my problems ill build a desktop and than ill keep sending the notebook to warranty until they fix it . I've still got 1 year of warranty, I've also sent it once already but they only changed the hard disk, and it didn't solve the problem too ...

I am having some problems with 3 years old PC. Only while playing games (Civ 5 - Heroes & Generals - Rise of nations) I suffer from freeze/crashes, PC doesn't show a BSOD, the mouse pointer works normally it doesn't freeze (until I try to alt+tab or alt+ctrl+del), and from my speakers I can hear looping sounds.
The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I try reinstalling windows, and the problem still exists. My BIOS, drivers* and OS are update, I perform a memtest for 6 hours and show no errors, I can run prime95 + kombustor and everything is fine, no temps problems, GPU never go over 68c and CPU at 58c, and no crashes.
DSIM commands show no errors neither.
*I tried latest NVIDIA drivers, and old ones, im actually using 334.89 version, and the problem persist.

I've recently started getting frequent BSODs and I am not entirely sure why. There doesn't seem to be anything I know that would be causing it. I had the pagefile disabled on my ssd and recently enabled it again to catch the dump file if I BSOD again and I just did. Attached is the SF Diagnostic file with the relevant information.

I get frequent BSODs, AMD driver crashes, screen display errors, game crashes, running Windows 8.1 on my AMD A10-5700 APU w/ 8GB RAM. Videos in browsers (firefox, IE, and/or chrome) are common culprits, as are running certain games (recently, GTA IV). Sometimes the BSODs and driver crashes are repeatable (loading certain games or certain web sites). As far as I know, this has happened since day 1 with this computer (refurb from Lenovo), though the frequency waxes and wanes.
Can sometimes make games work better by reducing graphics settings.
Have tried refreshing windows; the ~30 .dmp files in the diagnostic report are since I did that, less than a month ago.
Have tried removing and reinstalling AMD catalyst drivers.
Have tried removing RAM sticks one at a time, but still get the same problems. Windows Memory Diagnostic did not detect any errors.

My laptop has been crashing regularly and very often for about a month. Happens most of the time when I open a new webpage on chrome, or a video plays in browser - and I get this error displayed: Attempted Execute of NoExecute Memory.
I suppose this is a driver problem - this became a menace ever since I tried updating my video and audio drivers from the HP Website (Using a HP Envy DV6 7245us Laptop). I've tried reinstalling the drivers but it didn't solve the problem.
The laptop is new - bought it in September. Worked fine. Ran virus scans - nothing detected (I use BitDefender).

RAM: 6 GB

Current OS: Win 8.1 Pro x64
For the past few weeks, I had been having issues with my computer with black screens only during gaming.
At first, it seemed like a power issue since the machine kept shutting off and rebooting with no BSOD or error codes. So I got a new PSU.
Still kept happening - tested each GPU individually and all passed without error/problems.
Black screen problem still persisted. So I installed Win 7 x64 on a spare HDD and checked to see if it was software/drivers - still got black screen/reboot.
Decided it had to be the motherboard - RMA'd the board and just got a replacement (2 days ago). Still get black screen/reboots.
Reflashed the GPU BIOS - worked for a while when the voltage was left at stock (instead of 1.212V). However, still got black screen/reboot after about an hour.
I decided to test RAM w/ MemTest86+.
Tested RAM @ XMP setting (Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB 9-11-11-31 @ 1.65V) - got a ton of errors in MemTest86+ (411 errors after about 8.5 hours).
Reset RAM to "Auto" (1333Mhz) tested again - no errors so I booted into Windows. Tried playing AC4 and got black screen + reboot within 10 minutes.
Tested each RAM stick individually today and 3 of them passed fine with no errors while the fourth one had errors in the first and second passes - 10 errors.
Took two sticks out and put two "good" sticks of RAM back and fired up the computer.
Booted into Windows and ran Heaven 4.0 & Valley - both passed without issue with the GPUs OC'd and overvolted @ 1.212V.
Thought I had solved it. Fired up AC4 and got a black screen in about 10 minutes. Tried different GPU settings (stock, lower OC, no over-volt etc.) to no avail - all gave black screens within 20 minutes (some sooner). Tried BF4, got a DirectX error - game wouldn't even start! Tried several times - nothing! Tried BF3, got a black screen within 3 minutes.
My PSU connected via a thick 12AWG cable to a 20A breaker. The PSU cable (PSU: Lepa G1600) itself is quite think (albeit short).
Why this is happening - I have either tested or replaced everything.
There are no error codes; just a bunch of Event ID 41 in Event Viewer but that doesn't indicate anything useful (just unexpected crash/reboot).

For a long time now - over a year - I've been getting seemingly random blue-screens, 90% of the time during playing video games. It doesn't ALWAYS happen, and sometimes it goes days without happening, but other times it is nearly every time I play for longer than 15 minutes.
I upgraded several months ago to Windows 8 Pro and the problem persisted. Since this all started, I upgraded my entire computer including new motherboard, CPU and RAM. Since this usually only happened during playing video games, I thought the video card was the culprit (as unlikely as that is), but after upgrading my video card, the same problem persists.
I checked the hard-disk for errors using chkdsk, WD Lifeguard - all with no errors. I ran sfc /scannow and it said it found uncorrectable errors, and after following instructions from this forum, finally got it to say it found no errors.
Basically the only thing I haven't done is reformat my system, and replace the only remaining original hardware left, my 2 HDDs and my PSU.

My Sony Vaio Tap 11 (model: SVT1121C5E) runs very unstable ever since I bought it about 3 months ago. Almost every day the system crashes, sometimes multiple times. Sometimes with prior bluescreen, Windows colleting data and then stopping at 100%.
Occasionally the device shuts down and automatically restarts.Sometimes the screen becomes black and the device can be turned off only by holding the power-button for a few seconds.
I'm running Windows 8.1 and all the current device-drivers, bios-update and Windows-updates are installed.

I have a question regarding PC gaming, since I realy dont know as much as I would like to.
My question is what role does my CPU play in gaming? Is it a big thing? I always thought that having a strong, powerful graphics card was more important that a powerful CPU.
Is there a particular thing that the CPU does in PC gaming that makes having a strong one essential?
