I want to be able to use steam and hamachi properly but i can't get them to pop up on the screen.on steam i can right-click and open friends,....But the base window won't open up,it is there but i can't get it on the screen.

The only active area is the little arrow on the left that closes the popup. It may be part of Windows 8 or may be some part of the ASUS addons that were installed with my system..
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy win 8.1 pops out the Start menu bar (dunno what it's officially called but it is a vertical bar with Search, Share, Start, Device, and Setting) when I scroll the right edge of my touchpad (Dell inspiron), and if I tap on the mouse it flips right to the Start screen. I see Microsoft is really doing everything they can to get the users to the Start screen. But this is really annoying because I have no business in the Start screen, unfortunately. i never go there and never will.
How can I stop the windows from doing this?
How do I get rid of the crap -- that keeps popping in from the right side of the screen when I'm trying to scroll down while on the internet. Disrupts my scrolling and then I have to get rid of the useless junk before I can clear the screen. Can I eliminate this intrusion without going to a new operating system? I have windows 8.1 with all of the latest updates.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI built my PC from scratch on Friday 18th April. On the evening of 21st April I turned my PC on and saw a USB error popping up in a yellow box on the bottom right of my screen. This error was popping up every 5 se conds without fail.
I tried to uninstall the drivers for all USB ports and reinstall but this didn't work. Instead I inspected the error from my Device Manager and read this:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed." ((Port_#0011.Hub_#0003)) My USB devices
I have a Gigabyte H87 3HD Motherboard, a Nvidia GTX 760 graphics card, Intel i5 4440 Quad core processor, EVGA 650w Power Supply. I have Windows 8.1 64-bit as an OS.
With all my USB devices plugged in or without ANY plugged in, the error still pops up regardless. This leads me to believe it could be a problem with the motherboard itself.
I have tried the following solutions:
On and Off againUpdated BIOS to F6 VersionUpdated Windows 8.1Updated Chipset + all DriversWindows Hot FixesUsing CMD and NetMon to asses the USB portsSystem restore
I even right clicked on the error on the Device Manager, uninstalled and the error was still pinging up. Is my computer haunted? None of these have worked. I feel like I have exhausted all my options hence why I have named the thread as such.
When I am typing it appears that there is some type of shortcut that I am hitting which then pops up that navigation bar on the right hand side (where settings, search, etc. is). I would like to disable any of these shortcuts so this doesn't happen at all when I am typing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Win.8 64 and Chrome was the only browser between IE and Firefox that worked with out ads popping up in the middle of the pages and even articles, but now they're doing it when I use Chrome.
I.E. doesn't work at all and Firefox is slow and saying I need to install all kinds of things, like FLV Player.... just all kinds of stuff.
How to permanently disable the stupid charms bar? I downloaded this program called SkipMetroSuite and checked all the appropriate boxes, but it doesn't seem to work. The damn charms bar keeps popping up when I least expect it.

A video of the highlights of the laptop keeps playing after each period of 30 or 40 secs of inactivity. I move the cursor and the video disappears till the next period of inactivity. I've looked everywhere I could think of, libraries,task manager, both drives etc etc... It is well hidden or disguised.

I will open up a app ( windows store app or PC settings for example) and it will open and display the icon and blown up screen then immediately minimizes and will not allow me to maximize it. I'm so tired of it! I can't download any new apps or update my old ones let alone use any of them. I ran a basic trouble shoot through Microsoft and it came up at one point saying I need a Microsoft account. which is crazy because I've put in my CD key like 50 times and registered it when I put the OS on this computer . View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
Some of my Metro apps have just started to act weird.
My Email app just show a black screen.
XE currency loads forever and my Windows Store just flicker parts of the screen.
Metro shows weird search results.
I got an Acer 8935G so there only exists one VGA driver for this laptop. I installed it a couple of days ago and I'm suspecting this to be the cause since it wasnt like this before I installed the driver.
But I hope this is not the cause since with this laptop model, I dont have any choice when it comes to display drivers.

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.
When I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'd like to know if any of you guys have experienced this issue where when you try to open a metro app you get the splash screen for it and then just a few seconds later you're sent back to the start screen with no explanation whatsoever. It's doing my head in since I can't seem to find a fix - Google returns lots of posts about this issue coming from the win 8 beta, but none of the fixes I've seen seem to work.
It also doesn't happen with all apps. I can open the Music, Messaging or Games apps just fine, but if I try to open the metro Reader app or the Hulu/Netflix apps I downloaded from the store they just won't get pass this screen.
As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
I have a weird problem on my windows 8.1 start screen. When I right mouse click on app nothing happens. This way I can't rearrange any apps, can't add any of them to start screen to, nothing.. I can only open them. There is no menu after right clicking on any icon, there is no menu after clicking empty space surrounding icons.

The apps almost start, show the program name on the screen them close.. The problem is that is happening on both computers....
I bought an Alienware M17x R4 with a pre installed windows 8 64 bit operating system then updated to windows 8.1 via windows update. My problem is that it won't run the Alienware OSD application which is supposed to replace the default windows icons when using the function keys. View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter 23 Windows updates were installed a few days ago (to Windows 8.1 PC) I noticed a couple of things
1. Most of the 3rd party programs I had added to start screen had disappeared
2. Most of the Windows Accessories had disappeared from 'Apps' screen under 'Windows Accessories' (this affected all users on the PC). See screenshot (only Notepad remaining).
I found that most of the 3rd party programs were still installed, so just re-did 'pin to start' on those.
I checked one of missing accessories, Snipping Tool, and the exe file still exists in Windows/System32 folder. I tried creating a shortcut and copying to Start Menu/Programs folder, but then appears under 'S' rather than Windows Accessories!
Unfortunately I don't have a restore point that I can go back to and don't want to 'refresh' Windows install (as would lose installed 3rd party applications).
How I can restore Windows Accessories (or has experienced similar issue after updates)?
After using Win 8 for about a month ,there's one thing that really annoy me. When i install a program from the desktop screen and then go to the metro/modern screen, i end up with all kind of icons. For example i have the program icon then there are the ones for read me, release notes ,website and others. For one program i had eight icons. I know that we can have the same things on the desktop screen but at least there, they are easy to delete.
I find that to remove those entries on the apps screen i have to go to the program folder and delete them and then go to the apps screen to delete them. If we end-up with lots of icons on the apps screen we better get ready for scrolling the screen a lot to find the program we want. Also, when we click the program icon it bring us to the desktop screen. So, i think that for the apps screen there should be only the program icon there and nothing else.
i have a problem with my windows 8 . all my apps on my start screen cant open.. Its say that This apps can't open check window store for more information and gt a little X at the top right of the all apps..

Unfortunately, I clicked some of the wrong stuff and hid data that I'm pretty sure the computer thinks is important, and now my Metro tiles are missing.
