View 9 RepliesHow do I get rid of the crap -- that keeps popping in from the right side of the screen when I'm trying to scroll down while on the internet. Disrupts my scrolling and then I have to get rid of the useless junk before I can clear the screen. Can I eliminate this intrusion without going to a new operating system? I have windows 8.1 with all of the latest updates.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI turned my laptop right off last night (I usually just put it into sleep mode) and now, since rebooting this morning, I can't get the menu to slide in from the right hand side. Instead, the Power and Search icons are showing at the top of the start screen along side my name and avatar.
I've recently had to have a new hard drive but the menu has been working OK until now.
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to get this back?
My win 8.1 pops out the Start menu bar (dunno what it's officially called but it is a vertical bar with Search, Share, Start, Device, and Setting) when I scroll the right edge of my touchpad (Dell inspiron), and if I tap on the mouse it flips right to the Start screen. I see Microsoft is really doing everything they can to get the users to the Start screen. But this is really annoying because I have no business in the Start screen, unfortunately. i never go there and never will.
How can I stop the windows from doing this?
This seems to be happening more and more, I am using my PC (with Windows 8 Pro) as an HTPC and its connected via HDMI to a plasma TV so the PC is always on. Sometimes, when I go to use the pc I turn the TV on and then move the mouse around to turn the display on and I see the attached image, it looks as though the screen has shifted to the right and wrapped around to the other side.
I ran windows 7 with the same hardware on this setup for years without an issue.
When I right-click on something on the Start Screen, the customize menu doesn't appear. One day it just stopped appearing, and I don't know why. It's the same if I want to pin something to it from the page with All Apps. I've uploaded a screenshot where I right-clicked on the "Food & Drink" app.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI pinned an application to my start menu, occasionally I need to run that app with Admin privs. All I can find in the Start Screen is the "Run As Admin" option that appears at the bottom of the screen.
It's a real pain to have to click the app near the top of the screen and then slide all of the way to the bottom for "run as admin"..aside from pinning it to taskbar in Desktop (whch is probably where it belongs anyway)?
I'm struggling to see the purpose of the Metro Start Screen unless the computer has a touch screen. Other than the Apps and the few Live tiles - programs I've installed open on the regular desktop when I click on the tile.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.

My desktop - fourcore intel i5, 8mb ram on Windows 8 has no antenna either so I have an Alfa (AWUS036NH) with a 6db gain aerial attached, is struggling to reach 20mb. They are located side by side.

It didn't happen before, I restart my computer, but it didn't fix anything
This keeps popping up in the lower right corner of my screen every time I boot up.. What it is.. right or left clicking on it has no effect, nor clicking on any of the 4 icons. The only active area is the little arrow on the left that closes the popup. It may be part of Windows 8 or may be some part of the ASUS addons that were installed with my system..
View 9 Replies View RelatedI built my PC from scratch on Friday 18th April. On the evening of 21st April I turned my PC on and saw a USB error popping up in a yellow box on the bottom right of my screen. This error was popping up every 5 se conds without fail.
I tried to uninstall the drivers for all USB ports and reinstall but this didn't work. Instead I inspected the error from my Device Manager and read this:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed." ((Port_#0011.Hub_#0003)) My USB devices
I have a Gigabyte H87 3HD Motherboard, a Nvidia GTX 760 graphics card, Intel i5 4440 Quad core processor, EVGA 650w Power Supply. I have Windows 8.1 64-bit as an OS.
With all my USB devices plugged in or without ANY plugged in, the error still pops up regardless. This leads me to believe it could be a problem with the motherboard itself.
I have tried the following solutions:
On and Off againUpdated BIOS to F6 VersionUpdated Windows 8.1Updated Chipset + all DriversWindows Hot FixesUsing CMD and NetMon to asses the USB portsSystem restore
I even right clicked on the error on the Device Manager, uninstalled and the error was still pinging up. Is my computer haunted? None of these have worked. I feel like I have exhausted all my options hence why I have named the thread as such.
I use Dell Studio 1536 with this resolution : 1280*800
It is important for me to keep 2 apps in same screen at least, for example IE and Translator.
I also tried to edit regedit as a tutorial found on Bing said to follow to enabling this feature.
but the problem still is alive and restrict me just to switching between apps which is not comfort.
I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.
See attached pic to see what I'm talking about.
Im referring to this bottom menu; when I right click my app/programs, nothing pops up below. I also cant rearrange tiles, groups and stuff.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing Windows 8 IE 10. I have a long list of favorites that I like to keep on the left side of my screen. For some reason the list does not always stay there. I have to go to the "Star" ( view Favorites") on the top right and use the pin favorites which will then put on the left, but they do not always stay there. I seems like a continous process. Is there a setting I am not doing right?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 installed on it. I have one problem. I know if you hit one of the corners of the screen the right toolbar becomes activated and is displayed. My problem is that it tends to be displayed when I move the cursor in the middle of the screen. When it is displayed I have to deactivate it in order to continue what I was doing. I do not mind the toolbar if it is not so sensitive.

I see there is a Classic Start 8 Menu that once installed will give you back the Windows 7 style menu. If you install it, can you still go back to the default Windows 8 Start page if you like?

I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"
And my Start menu is like this:
And the "sfc/scannow" command shows that there are Corrupted or Missing Files Then I also did these:

how to get start menu without removing start screen like a second start menu or something?
edit: can i install any skin packs without loosing start screen because i have seen that skin packs has start menu only i guess?
I've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.
But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):
C:WindowsSysWOW64
undll32.exe "C:WindowsSysWOW64ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW
and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".
On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?
My Start Menu or whatever it's now called on the bottom left corner of the desktop disappeared. I'm not sure if it was accidentally unpinned but I've tried and can't seem to find a way to add it back to my taskbar.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I can't add programs to Start Menu teh way I used to do it, with right click, context menu and Add to Start Menu. It is still there in the context menu, but it doesn't work.
Apart from that, in 8.1 when I install a new program, it won't put a tile in the Start Menu by default. I need to do it manually by looking for the program in the list and righ-click-add-to-start-menu, but again, it not always works.
