Oct 14, 2013I bought a shiny new laptop yesterday with windows 8 pre-installed. After setting a few things up, i restarted the computer for the first time. At this time the computer downloaded many updates. On start up since my user account has been downgraded to a guest account. This is the only account on the computer, as such i do not have administrator rights and i am unable to log in as an administrator.
May I have to restore the computer back to factory settings but how to do this without being the administrator.

May 12, 2014how to change my account type back to administrator but with no luck.
I have been running this laptop as my main machine for a few months now with no problems, however, I realised I had a problem when I wanted to change some networking settings on Friday when the UAC said I needed admin privileges and wouldn't let me enter a password or click "Yes", hence not allowing me to go any further.
I went to control panel > User accounts and saw my account type has been changed to Guest.
Now I have thought long and hard and I have not changed or had any need to change my account type to guest, nor has anyone else had access to my laptop, so I can only assume this has been done in the last week or so during a Windows update.
I'll tell you what I did to try to resolve this below:
First of all I tried to enable the hidden administrator account while in my account by running command prompt as admin (and then entering net user Administrator /active:yes) but as I don't have admin privileges I couldn't even open the command prompt so I couldn't get any further.
After reading around the net and this forum I found this thread and gave it a try. After restarting the laptop and booting into safe mode I was expecting to see and Administrator account next to my account at the log in screen, however, there was only the administrator account to choose from, so I clicked it and it went through the first time initialisation of the account and then showed me the start menu, I then went to run the command prompt as admin and it worked, I entered net user Administrator /active:yes which worked with no problems. I then went to the user accounts in control panel to "Manage other accounts" but my usual account was nowhere to be found. So I thought I'd restart the laptop and see what happens out of safe mode.
When it restarted I was still only presented with the admin account, so I logged in to disable the hidden by entering net user Administrator /active:no in the command prompt run as admin and then restarted.
After restarting again I was expecting to see my account but was still presented with only the admin account, but when I clicked on it it said it was disabled and I was completely locked out of windows.
Luckily I created a restore point so I managed to restore my settings, and was back at square one.
After a bit of testing it seems my main user account is being removed when I enter safe mode, but do nothing else. Why entering safe mode is removing my account.
I am at a bit of a loss as I can't seem to activate admin privileges on my account, but if i try to fix it I lose my account completely.

At the login screen I see my user ID and a Guest user. Can I hide the guest user at login screen - I only want to see my user.
I DON'T want to boot in bypassing the sign on screen. (Note this is NOT the same as booting direct to desktop !!!).
This is new in Windows 8.1 RTM - I never had this in previous editions of windows.
(Note I really don't want to DISABLE the account - I just don't want to see it at login).

Jul 7, 2013I am using windows 8 on an HP desktop computer. I created 2 users (same computer). What I would like to do is have both users have the same desktop files and start menu between the two. For example the first one I created has a bunch of folders I put on the desktop recovered from my old computer, but when I log on with the other account they are not there. I also installed ms office on my computer with the first user- but it is not available to the other one.
Is there a way to link these 2 so I can still have different logins but access the same files?

Oct 18, 2013I upgraded to from 8 to 8.1 last night and now my main account is not showing up on the front screen for me to be able to log into it. All the other accounts are there. I've looked in 'CUsers' and the folder is still in there, how I can reinstate it? I also had a look at the restore point so I could 'roll back' but there's not a point in there from before the update, I thought update always set a restore point automatically?

Aug 28, 2014I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the content/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile.
I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.

Sep 15, 2014I have just enabled the Guest account on my laptop with the idea that it is completely secure from my account but it isn't really working for me. It seems to act as any other account and remembers details of the previous log-on.
Is there some way I can allow a Guest user to access internet, print (and nothing else really but it doesn't matter) and then after they have finished whatever they have done is destroyed so next time there is nothing in downloads, nothing on desktop, no preferences or log-ins saved in browsers etc. Like the temporary profile you get on occasion.

I have tried scanning for file errors on system in all the ways I could think of, restarting computer, turning guest account on and off, both of the previous 2 combined, re-installing all windows updates and searching for an online solution but still when I try to log in to the Guest account it says something like "Could not load account". I cannot restore system to an earlier state as I have done quite important things on this computer.

Jun 19, 2014I am involved in prepping several Panasonic Toughpads for deployment in our environment w/ Windows 8.1 installed. While prepping, we are logging in with domain accounts that have some domain admin privileges for various setups on the local machine.
Upon completion of setup, logging in as the assigned domain user, which, on these systems, will be a local admin. However, after a few seconds, where the account name is displayed on the top right corner of the start menu, it shows the logged in domain username--as it should--then quickly changes to show the previously logged in domain admin user's name.
This is phenomenon is occurring for myself and two of my coworkers who are using isolated domain admin logins assigned to them.
Troubleshooting that has already happened: restarted the system, deleted the domain admin's user folder and associated registry key in the ProfileList to no avail. Logged in as yet a different user, and back to the assigned user's account but still showing my domain admin name in the account name. Is this getting circular yet?

May 11, 2013How to correct user accounts in windows 8 Pro on new HP Pavilion g7 2246nr, I set notebook up using Microsoft account then called Microsoft when problems started, and we decided to switched to a local account. They created a new user account, then copied all my files to it. But I ended up with i administrator account that could not be deleted. That worked but my files are broken up between 3 other user accounts. I spoke with Microsoft to try and consolidate the accounts and they used a command line in cmd, run as an administrator, but it did not finish, or I may have cut it off by accident.
I am still working with the system but it has problems. I have reloaded the software 3 times so for. How to correct the problem without reloading all the software again? Also after setting up sharepoint in Office Pro Plus, it created another administrator account in UAC. I did not think this was going to happen? Right now in the UAC I have two administrator accounts with the sane name, In c:users there 5 with the temp file they created. What that command line they attempted to use was to correct and consolidate the user accounts.
How to correct the problem without reloading all the software again.
Trying To Remove Windows 8 User Account Files
Jul 27, 2013So when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.
Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.
But when I go the "C:UsersDC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:
If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)
So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:UsersDC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:
I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error. How to remove that "C:UsersDC" folder?

Jul 13, 2014So, I wanted to download a game from the windows store and had to create a Live/microsoft account. After doning so win 8 made that account the account that I use to sigh-in to windows. Didn't wanted that so I went to user managment and deleted the account from thare. The problem is that I also accidenly deleted my windows user account as well.
After I restarted, I got to the password screen and my windows user was gone, just "other user". I tryed to enter the windows user name and password but nothing. the screen also showed the microsoft acount name but here also the password dident work (probably because a deleted them both from the system...)
