8.1 Update - Windows Store Automatically Loads At Boot
Apr 9, 2014After the 8.1 Update yesterday the Windows Store keeps automatically opening at boot. After I close it it will then re-open fifteen minutes later.

Windows 8.1 - Website Automatically Loads Next Page?
Jun 25, 2014I just went to a web site that I have been going to for years, and I was using the 'page down' key as I often do. I got to the end of the page, and I saw a "flash" - loading page, at the bottom of the screen, and the next page automatically loaded. I didn't have to click on "next". I just continued to "hit" the 'page down' key.
Is this the new normal, maybe coming, or just something unique to that web site. Because I like it. Using Firefox, windows 8.1
I have made a few changes to speed up Firefox that you see on Google in the "about:config" area. And I have added the "Fastest Fox" add-on.
If there is some setting I can do that would apply to "all" websites, I sure would like to do that.
HDD Disabled In BIOS But Win 8 Loads OK From Boot Override?
Aug 22, 2013Accidentally switched off my computer. Now I can only get Windows 8 to load if I select the disc with Windows 8 on it from the boot menu.
If I look at the actual BIOS settings the HDD is stated to be disabled.
The main board is a Gigabyte GA-Z77 and the disc is a Crucial M4 SSD.
I tried getting the BIOS to reload but that made no difference.how I can enable the SSD again so that I don't have to go through the boot menu each time I start the computer.

The first time you go to install a store app you are prompted for your Live account credentials. Once entered, the only choice is SAVE or CANCEL. Once SAVE is chosen Windows remembers the password and the user is not prompted next time they go to install a store app. I want the user to be prompted every time. It seems earlier version of WIN8 allowed this. Can it still be done? I looked for a registry hack to prevent the Live password from being memorized but could find none.
How To Keep Store / Maps App (or Others) From Starting Automatically In Background
Jul 9, 2014I noticed that when I log on to my user profile Maps and Store app load in the background and use too much memory and cpu for my liking. Is there a way to keep that from happening without loosing the apps completely?
I also noticed that there used to be many projects/threads that tried to get rid of as much metro as possible. Where have they all gone? Nobody actually uses these crappy apps, right? I'd love an option to use (boot option or different user profile) Windows 8.1 without all the metro crap to have as much power left for games as possible. I noticed that when I rename twinui.dll that saves quite some memory but explorer shell won't load.

Aug 29, 2014I have a little problem: I've just recently installed Windows 8.1, all the updates, and, from time to time (1 hour or even faster), action center tells me that windows update is disabled, and when I've gone to the settings, it was off. Ok, no problem, it's not hard to enable it. But, as I said, something, I don't know which program or the operating system or anything else stops it.

...seem to be in order for the system requiring a password to be entered before the system loads the start screen or desktop but I'm directly in the desktop whether I cold boot or reboot.

Security :: Can Defender Update Automatically On Its Own
Dec 30, 2013I am a new Windows 8.1 user, having installed it on a new system build I did a couple of weeks ago. Prior to this, I was running Windows 7 and used Avast for my anti-virus, and Defender for the rest. I understand with Windows 8, Defender is really what MS Security Essentials used to be, which I had heard was pretty good.
I am somewhat of an advanced user, not an IT Pro by any means but have been a Windows user for many years and have never minded digging in and tuning it to my preferences.
So with this new build and Windows 8.1, I am thinking I will just stick with Defender for all my AV and Security needs. I am curious, is there a way to set Defender to download and install it's new Definitions updates on it's own? Without having that selected for all my windows updates? I prefer having Windows Update notify me when there are new udpates and letting me choose what and when to install them. That is one thing I liked about using Avast, it did that on it's own on pretty much a daily basis and I did not have to manually download and install them.
I took a look in Defender's settings and did not see one where I could set it to do those updates for it automatically.

I was under the assumption that I would run the update disc, enter my product key and it would update my 8.0 to 8.1 automatically. Pop in my legit product key and it said it was for "another edition of windows" and to "try another key."

Apr 9, 2014I've got windows 8.1 with the yesterdays update but the problem comes before this update.
Wen I open the Windows Shop, it always on the green screen and does not advance. I've done the following steps:
1 - I did WSReset.exe as administrator but the store is always like this. If you close and re-open the store, I get the same green screen;
2 - I downloaded the tool Windows 8 App Troubleshooter which tells me that I have an outdated graphics driver. Is not true because I have installed the latest version.
3 - UAC is turned on but without success;
4 - I've turned my account as a local account and tried to open the shop but with the same result. I've reverted my account as linked to Microsoft.
5 - I created a new user account and with that account the store opens. I returned to my account and nothing.
6 - Finally I ran the SFC / SCANNOW and gave me this picture.

It just sits at "Downloading" and when I hover over it it says "0% complete". Apparently I can't use the ISO because I need a key which the OEM version does not have. how I can get this thing to update?

I actually care less when it comes to updates since it's automatic, but I noticed that it refuses to install any drivers (which means I cannot access any USB drives or install programs that requites drivers) or updates, after searching for solutions on the internet, I found out in a website that said kb2919355 causes component store corruption that is irreparable, which is the update that I have already installed. I've tried repairing with DISM but it all fails, probably because the update causes the component store to corrupt when StartComponentCleanup is triggered.
I want this to be fixed but my restore point is already deleted since it's probably too old (which is weird that I'm having this problem since the update has been installed for months). I don't want to reinstall my Windows either, so what now?

Oct 23, 2013I have a fairly new PC running Windows 8 and I can't seem to upgrade to Windows 8.1--There are a bunch of issues-
1. Can't connect to the Windows Store--tried everything here save the refresh, which I do NOT want to do.
2. Downloaded the 8.1 ISO and burned it to a disc--get the error message that 8.1 could not be installed--0x101-0x20017 error--tried installing with a clean boot, turned off antivirus suite, etc
3.sfc /scannow does not work.
So currently I'd like to forget about the store for the moment and continue updating from the downloaded ISO. I really do not wish to restore the computer and I have a lot of software I'd need to reinstall and this would take a long time.

Every time I click on the Store tile it doesn't get past the green introductory screen before just disappearing (crashing).. I thought it might be related to security software (I use Norton Internet Security) so I tried disabling it and it didn't do anything. Oct 27, 2013When I first installed Windows 8 I decided to run with a local account (ACC1) and a windows account (ACC2). I mostly used ACC1 and only used ACC2 to play some games which were not available for desktop. After a few months I converted ACC1 to a windows account using a different email address from ACC2. Everything worked fine and I thought no more about it until I did the update to 8.1 today. After sorting out the important issues I found that ACC1 cannot get into the store. Actually, I get in, but after a short time it just flips back to the start page. ACC2 works OK, but it doesn't have all of my desktop apps installed because I installed those for the ACC1 user only.
How to :-
1. Fix the store issue with ACC1.
or
2. Merge ACC1 and ACC2.
or
3. Get the desktop apps to ACC2.
Can't Update Apps From Store After 8.1 Upgrade
Sep 5, 2013Just upgraded from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro. No hacks or anything, legit key.
My problem is that the Store shows that the Music and Video apps both have updates but they both error out on install with 0x80073cf1 and 0x80246007 errors respectively.
Trying to fix it I have tried the following:sfc /scannow finds nothing wrongDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth tells me "The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully."And running Troubleshooting from the Control Panel on the Windows Update option quickly results in a "Windows Update components must be repaired" and "Fixed" with a friendly green checkmark. But the errors remain whenever I try again.

Nov 7, 2013Bought a new Acer all-in-one and immediately upgraded it to 8.1 via a 3GB DL. Went perfectly.
Cleverly (I thought) I saved the update files should I ever need to do the update again.
Then the Acer had a hardware problem so I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement.
Now, I try to apply the 8.1 upgrade files that I previously saved from the store DL to the replaced computer.
It asks for a key, but won't accept either the one from the new replaced machine, nor the one that I returned.
Are these licenses now tied to an individual computer, via a unique code embedded in the BIOS or some such??
I really don't want to do the DL again, since my bandwidth is metered and 3GB takes a good percentage of my total monthly quota.

Oct 20, 2013It also seems to open every now and again in the middle of other, unrelated activity - though I haven't logged that much time since the upgrade, obviously, to form a solid opinion about this. It isn't listed as a startup program, so I can't figure it out.
