Win7 Slow + USB FLash Drive Issue

Oct 23, 2009

I have been using Windows 7 for about a week and it has been getting incrementally slower every day.

Here are the steps I have taken so far:

I have disabled every service I can disable without compromising the functionality of the OS. This includes Superfetch and Indexing.

I have cleaned out MSConfig of booting anything that isn't necessary.

I have disabled transparency on Aero

My CPU is hanging at around 50% usage per core and my ram goes up to 97% usage about 5 minutes after bootup and stays there. The page file has been increased to 4Gb.

Dual Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS. These are not currently in SLI as I can't find any Nvidia drivers that have functional SLI. The 2nd card is currently sitting in error state, don't know if this could be something to do with it.

I have attached some images which I hope will make diagnosis easier.

My other problem is that Windows 7 reads my Sandisk U3 Cruzer memory stick as unallocated space when XP picks it up no problem. It was formatted to FAT32. I reformatted it to NTFS, but still the same issue.

Flash Drive Not Recognized When Trying To Boot Win7

Oct 28, 2009

I've created the ISO file and moved it to the 4g drive using the AWESOME guide found here. However, the BIOS doesn't seem to recognize that the device is present. I've done some research and found that some usb drives aren't compatible with the BIOS? I made usb storage the only available boot option and nothing showed up.

However when I look at the drive while in Vista through my computer->G: It shows up as a windows system. I've also seen somewhere about enabling "Legacy usb"? I didn't find anything like that. Should I just got buy another flash drive and try again?

Flash Drive Suddenly Shows As Unformatted On Win7

Dec 27, 2009

Basically, i want to transfer my music collection to my usb drive, but when i do so it transfers about 70% and then it says "could not find this item - this item is no longer located in...." it says that the item is not longer located on my usb... but i was trying to transfer it from my pc to my usb so it should be put on there. It says this for like 380 items which is the rest of the data i wanted to transfer.

I wondered why it said it was no longer located on my usb, then when i looked on my computer, it shows my usb (and other flash drives on my computer) as unformatted, it just says there FAT32 format and when i click on it, they show as empty, even though i know thers alot of things on there.

Basically to fix this i have to restart my pc and then its all fine again, my flash drives show up fine and they are formatted and the files on them can be accessed.

But not all the music is on my flash drive so i have to transfer the rest over again like i did before, this time it transfers some and then has the same problem and i have to restart. Eventually i can get all the music on my usb after restarting a few more times.

My question is... why is this happening? ive no idea why but my flash drives just show up as unformatted half way through. There must be a way to stop this or something.

Slow USB Transfer Rate - Write Caching / Best Performance For Flash Drive Enabled

Apr 8, 2012

My problem is slow usb transfer rate - at first it start off real good (70-80 mb/s then within 10 sec it drops down to 3 and even 1 mb/s). 1.5 mb file gets into my flash drive in 10 min or so. Now I've formatted flash drives, no change. Write-caching enabled, "best performance" for flash drives enabled... Tried on a Lap-Top - transfer rate is not so high, but stable all the time - 15-12 mb/s. Remote Differential Compression disabled. Transfer rate within the hard drives in my computer is OK (I got 2). I don't know if it's the Windows 7 problem or the motherboard problem or hard drives config problem.

Here is my info:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Win7 Running Slow

Dec 11, 2009

I just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Vista. I have a decent computer, but after the upgrade everything has been running like its in slow motion. Every window that pops up pops up slow and when i exit out, it exits out slow. But the big problem i am having is that my games are running in slow motion even if i put all the settings as far down as they can go. I have updated my drivers for my motherboard, and video card and it hasn't improved one bit.

I also have cleared the registry using regcure and it still hasn't improved. All the same games that i played on Vista ran perfectly until i upgraded, and i clean installed the OS's twice now and i still have the same problem. Does anyone know how to fix this, or am i just going to have to stick with vista to run everything better?

Flash Player Running Slow?

Feb 17, 2013

i have a samsung laptop running windows 7 64 bit that is about three years old.  it has been running fine, but four days ago Internet videos stopped loading properly.  they will start, run for about 5 seconds, then pause for a minute or more before loading another few seconds.  amazon instant video also shows a connection speed of one bar and the video quality is terrible.  i suspected an issue with adobe flash player, so i did a clean uninstall and reinstall.  it didn't fix the problem.  java reinstall also did y internet speed is good, ping is very low with no packet loss.  for some reason, if i have adblock disabled the ads before the videos run just fine, but the videos don't.i was using chrome originally, but switched to firefox after reinstalling flash (i also removed all firefox plugins). the problem stopped for a few hours, then started again.  i ran a full scan in malwarebytes and it came up clean.  my isp showed no problems on their end.  i freed up some hard drive space because i noticed i was running below 10%, the problem again stopped for a few hours and then started again. ie is also having the same problem.  i have 4gb of ram, so i don't think that is an issue.

Intel GMA GM965 Slow Video With Win7 RC/Beta Drivers

May 27, 2009

I tried to play Wolfire Games - Lugaru (i have bought the game but the demo is good test) on my laptop with Intel gma 965, or the X3100 if you prefer, and it is unplayable.

Using the included 965 driver with windows 7 RC and Beta both, and even updating to the newest version currently available on windows update, the game is unplayable. The mouse cursor lags, heavily, just in the menu screen. It froze the system overall when I tried to load a level.

I can play the game just fine on Linux with this laptop. And, after trying the older Vista drivers instead of the windows 7 drivers, it ran just perfectly. The vista drivers DID give me a BSoD afterwards though when I shut down. I didn't install them in vista compat mode.

I had the exact same problem with GeForce drivers on a desktop with the same game(and another game called Secondhand Lands). The included windows 7 video drivers overall seem severely crippled.

Internal Flash Reader - No Drive Letters (not A Hide Empty Drive)

Oct 8, 2012

Before I even go further: yes, the "hide empty drives" has been unchecked)I had to reinstall my machine and I was able to to see the drive letters for the internal flash card reader. However I think something might have gone wrong when I give my external HDD a drive letter that was held by one of the flash card reader).I wrote "I think" because I am not really sure since I never wanted to use the internal card reader till today so I never noticed there was an issue. Anyway, the internal card reader does not show up even when I insert a card in the reader. Basically nothing happens. I have uninstalled the "USB Mass storage device" and it gets installed without any issue but the problem is still there: I can't see the reader. the INTERNAL flash card reader has a USB slot and when I insert a EXTERNAL flash drive, the EXTERNAL flash drive shows up.

USB Flash Drive Is No Longer Seen As A Drive Or In Disc Management

Sep 26, 2012

I know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.

I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.

When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.

I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.

XP To Win7: Extra Drive

My question is in regards to my secondary hardrive. Will the clean install also wipe the second hardrive or will it leave it untouched? Basically, can I back up my C drive onto the secondary drive without fear of losing it all? I would assume it would leave the second drive alone but I couldn't find any info and thus, why I am here asking.

Transfer Win7 To New Drive

Jan 4, 2010

My current hard drive has been getting wonky on me. About a month ago it came up with bad sectors. Replaced them with backup sectors. Nothing bad has happen since then, and I scan almost every day just in case. I am considering buying a new 1TB just because it will be newer, and faster. This disk is getting a lot of read/write errors and takes a while to do some stuff now.

My question is, does anyone know if it is possible to transfer your windows 7 partitions to a new drive directly without using a 3rd drive as a medium. The hard drive I am using is 750gb, and as I said, I am getting a 1TB. So does anyone know an easy way I can just plug in the new drive, use software to copy over Windows 7 to the new drive and it still work?

I know Windows 7 installed 2 partitions, so that is what is confusing me. Because I can not even see the other partition it uses.

PS: I have all my files backed up on 2 other drives. So don't worry about that.

USB Flash Drive / DVD Drive Problem

Jan 5, 2010

I recently ran into a very weird windows 7 bit problem after installing it on my desktop. I cannot copy large files/ holders into usb flash drive or write large files to cd/ dvd. The copying/ moving process would stay on for about 5-10 seconds then freezes then I get an error message. That is:

H: refers to a location that is unavailable. it could be on a hard drive on this computer...

I have all the latest drivers.

And windows/ nero 9 can't use my dvd drive to burn files.

Some info about my system: AMD X4 630 CPU. MSI KA780G (AMD 780G chipset) mobo. I have 2 sata hdds, non raid mode. The DVD drive is IDE. 4gb ram ddr2 ram. windows 7 64 bit.

Running Win7 From A USB Stick / Drive

Oct 11, 2009

I know there have been some discussions on this but I found this thread which actually DOES work for getting an XP system to work from a USB.

(Not only the install but actually Booting and running).

Ngine.de - How to install and run a FULL Windows XP from a USB drive

In theory something like this *could* work for Windows 7 --- anybody had a go yet.

Note - instead of Disconnecting Hard drives as specified in the link just disable them in the Bios - it's quicker and easier.

I know MS says its not possible but people seem to be able to find a way to do amazing things with computers.

Query About Installing Win7 On D Drive

Oct 25, 2009

I have a 320 gb hardrive which is split into 2 partitions at the moment, C and D. Unfortunately, my C drive, which has Windows XP installed on it at the moment, is only 15gb. I know I need atleast 20GB for a Windows 7 64-bit installation.

As I don't have access to another drive or a large enough USB to back my files up in at the moment, I was wondering if I should just follow the guide here and install Windows 7 in my D drive instead. The thing I wanted to confirm was this:

I read in this thread that if I install Windows 7 on D drive, it'll read the drive it is installed on as C. Is that true? Because I was wondering if I could just install Windows 7 in D drive and then format C which has XP in it (but none of my data).

Then I could rename the blank drive to D. Is this scenario possible? To cut a long story short, I want to install Windows 7 on my PC, get rid of XP, but my C drive is only 15gb and my D drive has all my data (movies, pictures, documents etc) in it.

Installing Win7 And Partitioning A 1TB Drive

Dec 18, 2009

I am looking to use my 1TB seagate SATA II drive for my Windows 7 installation, and was wondering how I should go about partitioning it and how large each partition should be or what I sould put on each partition.

My system will be used for the following:

Computer Games that take up a lot of space (World In Conflict, Empire Total War, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty, etc.)

Music

Video files/ recordings (I have a Hauppauge tv card)

Some Photos

Basic apps like office

Data files

Which of the above items should I put on the OS partition, and which should get their own partitions? How large should the OS partition be compared to the other partitions? Seperate partition for games?

Having one giant drive might be nice to try, but then I would have no where to put my excess video files if I ever needed to reformat. The 1TB drive accomodates whatever video files I can't store on my 2 smaller drives and currently has 120 GB of video on it.

In addition to my 1TB drive, I also have 2 more internal drives, a 250GB Maxtor ATA which is filled with video files and a 200GB WD SATA that I use for my TV card and storing the recordings I make until I have a chance to edit them or move them to a differet drive.

I have a seperate 250GB external drive for backing up data files and music, so the backup issue is taken care of.

Win7 Install On 2nd Drive Now Need To Format 1st

Dec 26, 2009

So I was not sure about Windows 7 and I have a PC with 2 physically separate internal hard drives. So I retained my vista OS on my C:/ drive (named OS) and did a clean install of windows 7 (using an upgrade disc student edition) on my D:/ drive (DATA).

After setting up, using and liking windows 7, I want to eliminate my vista system, which is boated now, completely. However, apparently with an intel chipset, I can't simply format the OS drive using the disc management utility, even though when I boot windows 7, it is renamed the D:/ drive because the bootloader is on the OS drive. I have tried changing the DATA drive to an active, bootable drive in disc manager. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make it the primary partition.

Originally found this forum on google with a hit on help: cannot reformat c drive

After spending about a week customizing my Windows 7 install, I am not too happy about the possibility having to reinstall on the OS drive and go from there. What method should I use to format my OS drive, and still be able to boot the DATA drive. I would then like to use my OS drive for storing music, and pictures, etc.

I have an external HD to work with. I suppose I could image the DATA drive with the Windows 7 install, format the OS drive, and then restore the image to the C drive, but that still leaves the problem of how to format the OS drive in the first place. Also, I've never done a recovery from image before, and am not big on the prospect.

Win7 And Winxp Drive Issue

Dec 27, 2009

I have xp and windows 7 dual booting and all appears to be working well except 1 thing.

xp was already installed and I already had a free partition. I installed windows 7 onto the free partition. My problem is that windows 7 is on drive F and xp is on drive c. It does not matter which os is started, they always show as xp on C: and 7 on F:

Everything works but most programs like to install themselves on c drive.

When I have dual booted in the past which ever os was start was automatically renamed to C:.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it so that when I start XP it is on drive C (as it is now) and then when I start Windows 7 have it be on drive C.
