Biggest bottleneck in my system right now is my boot drive, which is a WD velociraptor. I want to change this for dual 120GB SSD's in Raid 0 configuration. Can anyone walk me through the steps to copy over the existing Win7 64 install onto the SSD's, I dont want to have to load everything again

My current Hdd which contains my OS and program data totals nearly 249GB, obviously SSD's which are this big are very, very expensive, how can I transfer my current OS install to a new SSD in an easy as possible way but keep the OS and the programs that are installed.Some of the stuff on there, like games, I guess I could uninstall and then reinstall them later so that they are no longer on the boot drive.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI had an existing properly working system consisting of a SSD 64GB for my OS and a Raid1 config with two 1TB drives for data. My SSD ended up being to small as certain programs do not let me remap content to a separate drive. I have upgraded (swapped out) to a 240GB SSD reinstalled windows on it and windows does not see my raid1 in disk management, nor does it see my two monitors or my connection to my router. It was my understanding I could just swap out the SSD's and reinstall windows and it would see everything.

I have an image of my current system, created last night ( created in windows 7 from the "Ctrl Panel> Recovery>Create a system image" option) stored on my external 1.5Tb drive. It is stored in the "WindowsImageBackup" folder that was created and contains two .vhd files. one is obviously the image at 39Gb)
With my system running (Win7 Home Premium) I want to install this image onto a new, larger HDD and then replace my current drive ( 80Gb ) with the new, larger drive (320Gb ).
I simply want to copy the image from my external 1.5Tb drive to a "New" 320Gb drive (connected to my system via a USB2.0 to IDE and SATA cables that I use for backing up people's files and things from crashed machines) The "new" drive shows up in "Disk Manager" as "E", healthy partition, formatted, etc.
Is there a way to install my backed up image to my 320Gb external drive, THEN open my desktop pc, and replace my current 80 Gb drive with the 320Gb drive (already imaged and bootable as if nothing changed except the size of the drive) ?
Also, do I need to delete the partitions on the "new" 320Gb drive so that it shows up as unallocated space?
I am wanting to upgrade from Win7 32-bit to Win7 64-bit. I am told this will require a clean re-install of Win7. That isn't a problem in and of itself. My question is what will happen to the other RAID 0 arrays in the box? Since they are "software" RAID 0 arrays that were created by WIn7 32-bit after it was installed will they survive intact when I install a new version of Win7 on the base drive? My base drive is not part of a RAID setup. Will the new Win7 64-bit install recognize the two separate RAID 0 arrays automatically? I hate the idea of having to try to backup a couple of TB of data from the RAID 0 arrays (and then restore it) just to install Win7 64-bit.

The R840-16J had everything except an SSD!!! (and I could not custom make it here in portugal!).The Seagate Momentus 500 GB 7200 rpm installed (I just posted my performance results in the thread about HDD performance) have not that good performance and have a tremendous vibration (I can feel it all over the laptop).I'm thinking in a Samsung 830 512 GB SSD
1- would the performance increase?
2- I never had a fail with my HDDs (I have one 7 yr laptop that I use to my astrophotography capture sessions that run dozen of times in a very harsh environment and it is still fine!).What about the 830 ssd?
3- About energy: I allways hibernate my laptops! What the drain in energy in a laptop with a ssd when hibernated?
4- I have lots of sw installed (very specific for astronomy). I have Adobe Master Collection for example which is huge! Is it possible to install the new ssd and keeping all the stuff as it is now? I mean...maybe I clone all my HDD content with Ghost (that I bought but I think it will come with the 830..grhhhhh) and then transfer that for the new SSD, install ssd and all will work???? (or there is much more work to do and complications to do?)
I have all of my new PC parts in transit and have a copy of Windows 7 ready to be installed when I get it. Well in my current computer I have 3 internal HDD's. 1 for Windows and misc programs, 1 for Steam game installs and 1 for non steam game installs. Well Im wondering if I will be able to keep the software installed on the 2 gaming HDD's and just do a Windows clean install on the Windows HDD.
Any thoughts? Im leaning towards a resounding NO! But Im hoping for a YES!
Installing Windows 7 64 bit to new ssd. The current hdd will still have the current Windows 7 OS on it. As long as I have the bios boot set to the ssd can I leave the other win 7 OS on the mechanical drive in case of problems ?

I use a lot of software so as things get installed and uninstalled bad things tend to happen and sometimes things are beyond repair.My question is can I use my product key to download from someplace an image of Windows 7 with all the updates already installed? Installing the updates becomes very time consuming and the machine has to be restarted many times over so I am trying to avoid this. I suppose I could disable the updates but that is not really my intent at this time.

I've downloaded many drivers from 181 to 190 and all I get is "Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the installation again." WHAT THE CRAP?
I've tried to uninstall the current driver, log into safe mode and use driver sweeper to erase every single trace of the old driver, logged back in and tried to install new driver but ALWAYS get the same god damn problem! Why the hell is this happening to me?

I took my computer in for some repairs and requested that I get Windows 7 installed on it since they wiped the hard drive for me to begin with. So they did that and never bothered to ask if I wanted 32bit, or 64bit.My motherboard and so on are 64bit compatible, and the sole reason why I want this is because many of my video-games claim that I don't have enough memory with the 3.25gb of RAM usage to use certain video settings. In reality I have 16gb of RAM ready to be used, unfortunately the 32bit Windows 7 can't use it. Kind of lame that in 2012 all versions can't simply do it, but I'm sure more technological reasons negate it.Now my questions are that my current 32bit Windows 7 serial key can be used with a different install CD that is 64bit? My sister has Windows 7 64bit CD and I'm wondering is that even legal to do to begin with, as well as possible? Oh and I'm aware they must be the same version such as Home Premium, which they are.

If I set up RAID in bios, Windows crashes when loading with classic blue screen + restart. Is there any way to make it work (install some driver etc.) or do I have to reinstall Windows with RAID set up prior to Windows installation? I have Asus P7P55D-E board.

I have the RAID chosen correctly in the BIOS, and the utility works fine. At the clean install for either 64 or 32 bit, I try to choose the drivers which I have downloaded from Intel and Asus, and tried to use the Vista drivers off my P5Q install disk, and still, Win 7 does not recognize the drive.
I have been home building and using computers for the past 25 years and I guess technology has gotten way over my hobbiest head. I have tried the USB flash drive route and I doesn't work either. Please, I know of the F8 workaround for unsigned drivers, but that doesn't work either. So, how are people raiding Win 7 at clean install?
Second question, is there a good tutorial at technet.com (which I can't find there) or someother place that tells step by step how to raid under disk manager in win 7?
I want to slick my drive and do a clean install of the RC version. I currently have a Raid 0 configuration on 2 additional drives (not the OS drive) using the Asus P6T on-board controller. Will that Raid be preserved and thus the data as well? What is the best way to accomplish this with the least amount of angst?

If not what I will do is install on a parition on one drive and then after I have installed set up some stripped partition and hack the registery and change the locations of the Windows folder to be on the stripped partitions after copying them of course. This is just not a very nice way of doing it. My mobo doesn't support hardware raid so that is why I am trying to implement software raid and I have a second hardrive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PC is currently using a single RAID 0 drive that contains my Windows install and all my data in a single partition C: (I'm well backed up so happy with the risk of RAID0)
The RAID0 drive is setup by my motherboard controller so Windows just sees the one drive.
I am thinking of adding an separate drive for windows, hopefully an SSD. I would like to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on the new disk then rename the old RAID0 drive to something different such as D: . Then reorganise it into just a data disk.
My question is.. will the new Windows 7 installation just see the old RAID0 disk as another disk? I know this would work witha normal disk, but does RAID0 transfer over to a new installation ok?
My first post here, and I was just wondering if there was a way to integrate raid drivers in my windows 7 installation CD?

When I change the bios settings to set the intel RAID controlled to xhd and raid but try to boot from my windows installation it wont boot, it gets to ''starting windows'' and then BSOD. When I turn the RAID setup off and try to install the XHD drivers the install aborts saying ''this is not a RAID setup". Is there something I can do to get the drivers installed on my current setup then clone it to the RAID drives?

1. Windows XP 32bit installs fine on RAID0 (with proper driver integrated)
2. Windows 7 64bit and Vista 64bit installs fine on single drive.
3. Windows 7 64bit and Vista 64bit on RAID0 give BSOD 0x000000F4 during completing installation stage, then Matrix Storage manager shows RAID0 ERROR OCCURRED.
EDIT:
4. Windows Vista 32bit won't install on raid setup too. Its not the case with 64bits
I tried everything I could think of:
1. exchanged both hard drives
2. tested RAM
3. tried install with minimum pheripherals and 1GB RAM
4. messed up with BIOS, even updated to latest beta bios
5. tried installing intel vista64 raid drivers, tho windows 7 has itself
6. RMA'd my DVD Drive
and still NO GO

I would like to get 2 SSDs and put them into a raid array using Windows 7-64bit, but wanted to make sure I understand how to do that. The 2 SSDs will be the only drives in the system. My computer has an X58 motherboard with an ICH10R. Here is what I think is the correct procedure: Boot into the bios. Set the storage config to RAID (the other choices are IDE and AHCI) Reboot and hit Cntrl-I to get into raid menu during boot. Set up the raid array in the setup screen. Reboot to the Windows 7 install CD and install Windows Is this correct? Are there any other steps I need or tips I should be aware of?

Everytime I try loading the drivers at install it gives me an error stating the drivers are unsigned and to install a 32 bit OS. When installing a 32 but OS, the install works normal and the computer runs fine. I am just wondering why it wont install for 64 bit considering I would much rather run 64 bit. I went to both the MoBo's website and the main companys website for the chipset drivers (AMD) but have both turned up with the same error.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble installing windows 7 (home premium) on my new raid array (2x intel 330 120GB SSD in RAID0). Basically, windows CAN see the raid volume. it recognies that there is a single 223 GB volume available. I select "Load Driver" for the volume, and plug in my trusty USB with the appropriate intel SATA RAID drivers. Win7 recognizes that there is a compatible driver on the USB, installs it, but still says: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu". The format and create new partition options are grayed out for this volume.
Using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology tool, I combined the two drives into a raid0 volume. This is confirmed because when I restart, the raid volume shows up in the RST echo with the right size, and also indicates that the volume is bootable. It is also confirmed because the windows 7 setup only sees one 223GB disk. I have confirmed that in the BIOS, the SATA controller is set to RAID mode (not AHCI). I have confirmed that in the BIOS, the first boot option is "RAID intel SSD". I've tried the RAID drivers that came with the motherboard, Ive also tried the raid drivers available from intel and the latest raid drivers available from the motherboard MFR.
