Connecting 1 Windows 7 Machine And 1 Windows Xp Machine To Share Files

Feb 6, 2011

ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers

-one is a windows xp 32
-one is a windows 7 64

ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen

Mapping XP Machine To Windows 7 Share

Apr 5, 2012

I've been going round and round trying to resolve this problem with no success. We have a small business using a PC as a server. The "Server" and all the PCs except one (the accounting machine) are running Windows 7 Pro (64-bit). All machines (including XP) are using the same workgroup name: WORKGROUP. The problem I'm having is that the XP machine can neither see the Workgroup, nor can I map the machine to the Shared folder on the Win 7 machine. I've been through all the set up scenarios from Microsoft but without success. I know there's handshaking going on because the Win7 Server can see and access the shared directories on the XP machine. It just doesn't work the other way.

Physical To Virtual Machine & Share Boot Drive?

May 31, 2012

XP: Physical to Virtual & Share Drive w Host? Disk2VHD vs VMWare P2V? Physical-to-Virtual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia My Thinkpad X61T with recent 8GB DDR2 Upgrade:I have an XP Pro 3 instance on a HDD able to use 2.99 GB RAM. I can backup bunch of data files to make size smaller.I have a Win 7 x64 instance on another HDD that can use most of the 8GB RAM. Now, I'd like to do two things:

1. Virtualize the XP instance and create a Virtual Disk/ Virtual Machine, with all of the Programs & Settings intact.

2. Run this XP on top of Win 7 x64 Host and "Slowly" Migrate Files/ Settings/ MetaData etc. from GUEST XP to HOST machine.I'd prefer to be able to SHARE "the C: or Boot Drive" between the GUEST & HOST machines (as it is mounted/ running) and be able to COPY some Specific Files/Folders using ROBOCOPY/ RICHCOPY to maintain attributes that could/ easily get lost with any other copy method.Thoughts/ suggestions, experiences, comparative reviews on using Software/ Tools out of the above listed page and how could go about doing both the things.do let me know UPDATE: Some advise/ suggestions I got on another forum was. Quote: If it were me, I'd use DISK2VHD on the XP hard drive, copy it to the Windows 7 machine, install XP Mode, and fire it up like that.An alternative, in some ways better, would be to use VMWare's P2V converter on the XP machine, install VMWare Player on the 7 machine, and load the virtual machine on there. If you're just worried about docs / settings / etc, I'd suggest skipping virtualization and just use Windows Easy Transfer to make a clean break. I've used VMWare and Virtual PC a LOT in the past, but not used in a long time. I know some functionality for items 1 & 2 exist but wanted to get a comparative idea between the various options LISTED in the Link. I guess I was a little out of touch when I realized so many products existed just to do P to V. I remember only VMWare had that for a while. For me the ability to "share" & "copy" these files is critical. PS: Also, I may or may not have enough storage on the Win 7 x64 drive so I'll have to run the guest VM from a USB 2.0 HDD. Would that work okay? For now, if the suggestion give by someone from the other forum still holds. What are the pros vs cons of Disk2VHD vs VMWare? (Given the specifics of my scenario?)Esp Sharing Drive & Copying using RoboCopy/ Richcopy (To maintain Modified/ Created Dates .. Wish there was way to keep Accessed Date)

Win7 Wont Share Drive With WinXp

Oct 1, 2009

I'm currently having issues sharing a full hard drive from my windows 7 machine to my windows XP machine.

No matter what I try, when I try and open this drive on my XP machine I get the error Quote: p4pcmedia is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied. I have set up the sharing rules in Windows 7, turned off the firewall and set the permissions to be read/write for administrators and everyone, which is the same permissions the default shared "users" folder which is accessible.

Networking (to File Share) Between Win7 And Winxp

Mar 15, 2009

I have been struggling to figure out a way to network my Windows XP Professional (wired desktop) with my Windows 7 (wireless laptop).

I have already gone back through the 16 pages of this forum, and tried the suggestions for Is there a way to file share with XP?, Netorking between 7 and xp;Cant get it right, Win7 Wireless PC Doesnt See Wired XP on Network, cant see xp machine under win7, and even XP to 7 Printer sharing and can see printer from xp but not 7, but to no avail. Or at least, I am not doing it right.

I've been trying to work with a 'home' network on Windows 7, and with firewalls down on both PCs. I do not have a homegroup setup on my Windows 7 box. Both OSs are fully patched. I shared my "Desktop folder" with everyone. When I open up the group "Workgroup" on my XP machine, I can see my Windows 7 computer and my XP computer, but I cannot access it. I get this message instead:

Quote: Originally Posted by XP machine " [PC name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

I cannot see my XP on my Windows 7. Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder was already on my XP machine (tried to DL it from the link and install, but my PC told me I already had a more recent version of it), I've set up advanced sharing and disabled password sharing on Windows 7, I've enabled "Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers", and enabled all sorts of virtual access to my Windows 7 and XP. Nothing has worked.

Can someone help me out?

I am not ashamed to admit that if I have to be walked through it from the beginning, I'll take it. I just want to be able to pull files from my Desktop to my Laptop, and vice versa.

Win98 Networking Question

Mar 5, 2009

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully networked a win98 machine to Windows 7?

I'm looking at purchasing some PCs w/Windows 7 for a small business that presently has primarily XP Pro machines except for 2 PCs that run win98. The 98 boxes run proprietary software that controls production machines in the shop and they cannot be upgraded. They do however need access to files that would live on the Windows 7 machines.

If anyone has tried this (or would like to just for kicks) and could provide feedback on:

a) it is possible

b) what extra steps would be required to get this working

Networking Win 7 With Millenium / Win98

Dec 29, 2009

I've been asked to look at a network that consists of all the os's from 98 to Win 7. The Network worked fine prior to the addition of the Win 7 machine. They were all in the same workgroup and were able to share off each other.

The current issue is that though the Win 7 machine can be attached to the network and can see and access files off the ME machine and the Win 98 machine, they are unable to access files off the Win 7 machine. They get access denied messages. The XP and the vista machines in the workgroup have no problem connecting to the new Win 7 machine and can see what I've placed in the public libraries.

They can see the Win 7 machine on the network and can ping it.

Any ideas?

Can't Share Printer

Jul 5, 2009

I have used 7 (64 bit) long enough to be confident in using it as my main Windows machine.

Part of that is being a print server. I am staying with Workgroups to allow connecting to Linux boxes using Samba.

I installed the printer just fine.

But I can't see how to share it.

Google searches helped me verify some things.

Under Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings I do have File and Printer Sharing enabled.

Under Advanced sharing settings I have set the radio button to Turn on file and printer sharing.

But when I go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel, and go to properties of the printer, I do not have a sharing tab. Or anything share related on the context menu.

I can access folders on other machines, and I can share folders, but I get prompted for a password on other machines even though I have disabled passwords. That is a lower priority.

How can I share the printer?

Share Printer With Xp

Nov 21, 2009

I upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from Vista on my desktop. My home wireless networ was running smoothly. Since the upgrade I am no longer able to access my printer (Canon i9100) from my laptop running XP. My XP recognizes the network complete with my W 7 desktop and my son's Mac mini. The XP just will not connect with the printer the printer is a USB printer that functions well if directly plugged into the XP. When I try to print from the laptop with the printer plugged into the Win 7 desktop tho, it doesn't find the printer.

When I try to "add a printer" to the XP through the Win 7, it keeps wanting to download the correct printer drivers but cannot find them anywhere. I have the original disk that contains the drivers but it will not load onto Win 7 (doesn't like 64 bit). Canon does have drivers for 64 bit so the printer works fine on Win 7. Is this too complicated a post? It's late and I'm pretty frustrated with the whole subject.

Unable To Setup Share Printer In Windows 7

May 3, 2012

I have two windows 7 computers. computer-A is connecting EPSON printer and I have enabled the file and printer sharing function. The file sharing function is working fine. Then I tried to add the printer in control panel on computer-B, it sees the epson printer but when I try to install the driver (download from computer-A) then it say unable to connect. I have try it on different computer-C it is saying the same thing. What should I do?

I have installed the EPSON driver in computer-B (hoping it would work)but still after the install the driver (download from computer-A) by itself then it says unable to connect the printer.

I have setup all the computers with the group name of WORKFROUP. You may wonder why I don't use the Windows 7 Homegroup, it is because I have some XP computers need to use that computer-A's printer. how to make the printer sharing works. [URL]

Or are they automatically accessible (provided that the local user account and passwort is known at the remote computer? Do I have to install the printer driver in general at the remote computer as well or is the printer driver on the local computer enough?

I have a netbook with Windows 7 Starter and find the printer on the network and even try adding it with \hostnameprintername. UnableTo Share Printer On Windows 7 Starter And Vista

Jan 18, 2012

I've got a printer connected by USB to a desktop running Vista and hardwired to a WiFi router and I've got a Nokia booklet running Windows 7 Starter and using the WiFi. I have tried to get the two computers to connect with each other, but only the desktop can get into the booklet. I cannot get the booklet to get into the desktop. It seems that because I only have Win Starter 7, I cannot form a home group. I need the full featured Win 7 to do that. Is that correct? I really would like to use the printer on the booklet, but even though it seems to send the document to the printer queue on the desktop, nothing prints. I suspect it's the same issue as I mentioned, but at least it's getting something into the desktop. When I try to print and then look at the document's properties, it says the size of the document but always says pages to print.

Can't Share Printer On Local Network (0x00000012 Error)?

Sep 26, 2012

And also complicated, 'cos not even my CISCO Network teacher has been able to give me a solution. I think I need some smart people here The thing is that I can't share my printer (connected by USB to my PC) with my laptop on another room, over the local network (in Windows 7 the name is Home Group). The printer model is not relevant because time ago I was able to do what I'm trying now.All my configurations are OK, at least the basic ones, because there's definetely something wrong with my PC, and here's why: if I take my laptop and put it next to the printer and connect it to it (by the same USB cable), I can access the printer with my PC, while it's been shared by the laptop. That proves that the internal network is fine. Also, all the configurations of the printer and also of the home group are literally same in both PCs, the big one and the laptop.

Both PCs run Windows 7. I have tried this, Connect to printer error - Microsoft Windows Vista Community Forums - Vistaheads, but it didn't work. The printer is also properly installed on my PC, it is not a driver problem or something like that.My AV is ESET ESSBE 4, but I don't think it's related, because I have tried deactivating its firewall, and also, on the laptop the AV is the same and theprinter did work. The services are also equal in both PC's now. I have even tried changing the network adaptor on my PC (from Ethernet to Wifi). Nothing.I recently had problems with the home group, but they are solved by now. I guess the source of the problems is the same, but I don't know where else to look.
