Cannot connect to printer from laptop unless Windows 7 has login password enabled.
Any ideas on how to share this printer when windows 7 has no password
i switched my bosses computer to Windows 7 here at work, all went fine.. we are using win98 under VMWARE 6.5 for our windows 98.. everything works great, except i cannot get it to access the printer on the Windows 7 machine, it sees it but always gets a access denied error, i have turned off password sharing.. and any of the xp/Windows 7 machines see it fine.. just the damn 98.. and i can't not use 98 cause of our POS software...
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a printer connected by USB to a desktop running Vista and hardwired to a WiFi router and I've got a Nokia booklet running Windows 7 Starter and using the WiFi. I have tried to get the two computers to connect with each other, but only the desktop can get into the booklet. I cannot get the booklet to get into the desktop. It seems that because I only have Win Starter 7, I cannot form a home group. I need the full featured Win 7 to do that. Is that correct? I really would like to use the printer on the booklet, but even though it seems to send the document to the printer queue on the desktop, nothing prints. I suspect it's the same issue as I mentioned, but at least it's getting something into the desktop. When I try to print and then look at the document's properties, it says the size of the document but always says pages to print.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI emailed Microsoft support this question and got a useless answer back; they just sent me a link to download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which basically told me what I already knew (that my system is capable of running Windows 7).
So I called them just now and the so-called "tech support" person wasn't much of a help either, she didn't seem too bright and didn't know much about the whole upgrade process, giving me conflicting information. So, I hope someone on here can answer this for me.
I recently bought a new laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Then I found out that Home Premium does not have "XP Mode" capability, so I used the Student Discount offer to buy Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (full version not upgrade) from Microsoft's website for $29.99 (what a bargain!). Can anyone tell me FOR SURE, whether I can do just an upgrade (where all my manufacturer's pre-installed applications, drivers, and all my currently installed applications and settings are preserved) or if I MUST do a clean install (reinstalling all of these applications, etc.)?

No matter what I try, when I try and open this drive on my XP machine I get the error Quote: p4pcmedia is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied. I have set up the sharing rules in Windows 7, turned off the firewall and set the permissions to be read/write for administrators and everyone, which is the same permissions the default shared "users" folder which is accessible.
I have been struggling to figure out a way to network my Windows XP Professional (wired desktop) with my Windows 7 (wireless laptop).

I've been trying to work with a 'home' network on Windows 7, and with firewalls down on both PCs. I do not have a homegroup setup on my Windows 7 box. Both OSs are fully patched. I shared my "Desktop folder" with everyone. When I open up the group "Workgroup" on my XP machine, I can see my Windows 7 computer and my XP computer, but I cannot access it. I cannot see my XP on my Windows 7. Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder was already on my XP machine (tried to DL it from the link and install, but my PC told me I already had a more recent version of it), I've set up advanced sharing and disabled password sharing on Windows 7, I've enabled "Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers", and enabled all sorts of virtual access to my Windows 7 and XP. Nothing has worked.
Can someone help me out?
I am not ashamed to admit that if I have to be walked through it from the beginning, I'll take it. I just want to be able to pull files from my Desktop to my Laptop, and vice versa.
Windows Vista refuses to allow access to a printer from Windows 7. The Win 7 laptops are in a domain and the Vista Home Premium machine is not. It's security settings are set to share without password. The share has permissions and security set to everyone. Related, the Vista machine cannot be accessed by name, only by ip. I'd like to add the printers and not have to worry about entering the password each time as it gets in the way of work.

I was attempting to add the music folder to my itunes on my laptop. i have made the music folder public. It can be seen on my xbox as well as my ps3 the network sees the laptop and destop, but when i try to access them they both ask for a user name and password. I have not set any passwords for either.

I setup the new server 2008 R2 Installs SQL server 2008 express with management tools and called it MSSMLBIZ Install outlook 2010 and BCM and SQL 2008 express on a new windows 7 PC When I tried to connect my windows 7 pc to a new share database. I put in my servername and it found the databases I create and shared. But when I try to choose one they are all grayed and I cannot hit the connection button. I tried changing the permission in the data base (SQL). View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm unable to connect to a samba share on a FreeBSD (via FreeNAS) box when using the machine name.
The message it gives me is "The account is not authorized to log in from this station".
The share is in anonymous mode; there's on restrictions.
If I try to connect to the same share via it's IP, things work.
Connecting via name worked previously on this same machine from XP and after I first installed Windows 7.
I can also connect to it via a Popcorn Hour machine.
Any ideas?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using a desktop running Windows 7 (soon to be 8) Ultimate. My target computer is a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
If I download a file, is it possible for me to set a download destination directly to the laptop if I initiate the download from the desktop? The computers will be on the same network and part of a Homegroup (if that matters). I'd like to create a folder on the desktop screen of the laptop, and have the files end up there.
Alternatively, I suppose I could have the file download to the desktop computer, and then I could wirelessly transfer it over via the Homegroups, but moving 1-2GB files would probably suck bandwidth and increase system resources on my end.
EDIT: Is this also possible with a second desktop computer as well? (One primary client, and two satellite computers).
I have used 7 (64 bit) long enough to be confident in using it as my main Windows machine.
Part of that is being a print server. I am staying with Workgroups to allow connecting to Linux boxes using Samba.
I installed the printer just fine.
But I can't see how to share it.
Google searches helped me verify some things.
Under Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings I do have File and Printer Sharing enabled.
Under Advanced sharing settings I have set the radio button to Turn on file and printer sharing.
But when I go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel, and go to properties of the printer, I do not have a sharing tab. Or anything share related on the context menu.
I can access folders on other machines, and I can share folders, but I get prompted for a password on other machines even though I have disabled passwords. That is a lower priority.
How can I share the printer?
I have a laser printer that is abandoned by Canon (ImageClass D761).However, I have an old XP notebook that I can print to it..Can I share the printer through XP and print to it via Windows 7? There are no drivers for it in Windows 7..Or will I just have to make PDFs of everything I want to print and send them to the XP notebook and print from there.....?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from Vista on my desktop. My home wireless networ was running smoothly. Since the upgrade I am no longer able to access my printer (Canon i9100) from my laptop running XP. My XP recognizes the network complete with my W 7 desktop and my son's Mac mini. The XP just will not connect with the printer the printer is a USB printer that functions well if directly plugged into the XP. When I try to print from the laptop with the printer plugged into the Win 7 desktop tho, it doesn't find the printer.
When I try to "add a printer" to the XP through the Win 7, it keeps wanting to download the correct printer drivers but cannot find them anywhere. I have the original disk that contains the drivers but it will not load onto Win 7 (doesn't like 64 bit). Canon does have drivers for 64 bit so the printer works fine on Win 7. Is this too complicated a post? It's late and I'm pretty frustrated with the whole subject.
Ok so i made a homegroup and set it up on the other PC, i can get info off my sons PC but he cant use my printer or see my files. Whats going on ? I have the printer set to share i cant even see it on his PC. This file sharing stuff is not my strong point, can someone try to ease my burnen. All i need to do is let him share my printer.

I realize that Windows 7 will need vista or XP already installed for the upgrade version of Windows 7.
But if I want to upgrade my Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit,
Will I be able to do it with this upgrade disk?
after all I will need a fresh install (because 32 to 64) and this is the upgrade version.
I have an unused Vista upgrade that came with my purchase of a Dell XPS laptop running XP MCE 2005. Rather than having to backup files and then reinstall apps for a clean install of 7, would it make sense to run the Vista upgrade, deal with the Vista driver issues then, and be able to do an upgrade to 7?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI plan to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium x86 to Windows Seven Home Premium x64 when it is released. However, I only want to pay for an upgrade license, NOT a full price version.
My current version of Vista Home Premium is itself an upgrade from the original OEM copy of XP that came on my PC.
There are two ways as far as I can see:
i) Vista Home Premium x86 > Vista Home Premium x64 > Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (first stage done using an alternate media which I have just paid GBP 7 to be delivered shortly.
ii) Vista Home Premium x86 > Windows 7 Home Premium x86 > Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (first stage using an x86 retail upgrade, second stage using alternate media obtained after buying the retail x86 package).
However, looking at the following article:

it reveals that the steps are likely to be even more complex. For example, my option i) becomes:Uninstall Vista altogether Reinstall my original Dell x86 copy of XP Home Edition. Use the Vista alternative media to do an upgrade installation of Vista Home Premium x64. Then do an upgrade installation of Windows x64 on top of that. Extremely messy, and almost certain to end in tears!
It would be nice if MS took the opportunity to provide a straightforward upgrade path from x86 to x64 this time around; until we know the upgrade options no one knows for sure I guess. However, does anyone know or suspect an easier method?
For example, with my x86 copy of Vista Home Premium in situ, could I install a clean copy of Vista Home Premium x64 on another partition by booting from the DVD, and then just do an upgrade install of Windows 7 x64 when it become available?

Can anyone verify that? It would be more time consuming but given the amount of apps I have installed and need, it is the best choice in my view. I have an old Vista disc somewhere so there is no extra expense.
Anyone done this before? or heard of it working?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a hosted Linux server running CentOS 5 with Samba 3.4. Everything is setup and it is accessible via Linux machines by typing [URL] in a Firefox address bar. I am trying to set up a local network share on a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 computer. I have tried entering the IP address in 2 locations:1. Map Network drive. I select a drive letter and type in the ip \12.345.678.9 It asks for credentials and I enter the user info for the user I created on the Linux machine. It thinks a moment then pops back up asking for credentials. It doesn't say they are invalid, just never goes through.2. Connect to a website (under Map Network Drive). I type the IP [URL] and click connect and it pops up a dialog saying "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another".
I have tried creating a loopback adapter and trying to setup a connection via SSH using the guide found at [URL]. After completing the tutorial (substituting my server IP address for the destination address given) I try using the Run dialog as indicated and get a "Windows cannot connect to.." error and the diagnose connection button. One thing that may be causing problems there is that the loopback adapter is labeled as an unidentified network and thus stuck as a public connection, and I am unable to change it. Searching for solutions to that brings up things I can't access (no group policy editor on Home Premium) or results in no change (setting DHCP server, which I tried setting to my router).
For some reason my laptop takes forever to connect to a shared drive on my desktop on my home network. I've tried connecting to it by mapping the drive and through windows explorer and same thing. Sometimes it won't even connect at all. I don't have this issue with other computers on the network. And when I say a long time I am meaning like 5 minutes or more. At first it was maybe only 1-2 minutes but it is getting worse. My mouse icon has had the spinning ring around it trying to connect the whole time I have been writing this.Both computers are Win 7 pro x64 with sp1. Desktop is wired directly to the router and laptop has excellent signal strength. Both have DHCP reservations set in the router. Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop with Vista on it had all sorts of issues. I cleaned them all up, but couldn't stop it from hanging. Seemingly random. Complete and permanent freeze requiring 10 seconds on the power button to restart.
Eventually decided to move to Win 7 RC. Formatted hard disk completely (with BootIt NG) before installing. Still having the same problem.
Memtest86 reports no issues (after 47 hours).
Chkdsk no errors.
sfc.exe no errors.
Hitachi dtf no errors (although it's a Toshiba drive).
All the regular spyware, adware, malware programs - no issues.
Interestingly, the problem doesn't seem to occur in Safe mode or when performing chkdsk, installing Windows, or anything else outside the main windows environment. This leads me to believe it's not hardware, but some system/software element common to both Vista and Windows 7?
I'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100. 1.73GHz, 1gig ram, 32 bit Win 7, version 6.1, build 7100.
Also, I'm currently trying to run a Windows Update from within Safe Mode With Networking, but it's not working. Should it be?
