Mapping XP Machine To Windows 7 Share
Apr 5, 2012
I've been going round and round trying to resolve this problem with no success. We have a small business using a PC as a server. The "Server" and all the PCs except one (the accounting machine) are running Windows 7 Pro (64-bit). All machines (including XP) are using the same workgroup name: WORKGROUP. The problem I'm having is that the XP machine can neither see the Workgroup, nor can I map the machine to the Shared folder on the Win 7 machine. I've been through all the set up scenarios from Microsoft but without success. I know there's handshaking going on because the Win7 Server can see and access the shared directories on the XP machine. It just doesn't work the other way.

I want to know if I can access a network share (for CMD line copy) that requires a username and password without mapping it.
The reason is for the purpose of copying backups. If I were to map the drive, any virus/malware could infect the share, defeating the purpose.
I know I can copy to the share if use the same account/passwords on both machines and just do xcopy \pcname\sharename..... I was hoping to avoid creating/changing accounts on the machines.
I know I can map the drive using netuse and then kill it after the copy. This isn't perfect, but I guess if there is no other way, it will pass.

ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers
-one is a windows xp 32
-one is a windows 7 64
ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen

I asked this question recently, then realized I may have asked in the wrong forum. Here is my problem : trying to access folders shared on a win 7 machine from a win xp machine is causing windows explorer to crash. The issue is intermittent and I can't figure out at all what is causing it.

XP: Physical to Virtual & Share Drive w Host? Disk2VHD vs VMWare P2V? Physical-to-Virtual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia My Thinkpad X61T with recent 8GB DDR2 Upgrade:I have an XP Pro 3 instance on a HDD able to use 2.99 GB RAM. I can backup bunch of data files to make size smaller.I have a Win 7 x64 instance on another HDD that can use most of the 8GB RAM. Now, I'd like to do two things:
1. Virtualize the XP instance and create a Virtual Disk/ Virtual Machine, with all of the Programs & Settings intact.
2. Run this XP on top of Win 7 x64 Host and "Slowly" Migrate Files/ Settings/ MetaData etc. from GUEST XP to HOST machine.I'd prefer to be able to SHARE "the C: or Boot Drive" between the GUEST & HOST machines (as it is mounted/ running) and be able to COPY some Specific Files/Folders using ROBOCOPY/ RICHCOPY to maintain attributes that could/ easily get lost with any other copy method.Thoughts/ suggestions, experiences, comparative reviews on using Software/ Tools out of the above listed page and how could go about doing both the things.do let me know UPDATE: Some advise/ suggestions I got on another forum was. Quote: If it were me, I'd use DISK2VHD on the XP hard drive, copy it to the Windows 7 machine, install XP Mode, and fire it up like that.An alternative, in some ways better, would be to use VMWare's P2V converter on the XP machine, install VMWare Player on the 7 machine, and load the virtual machine on there. If you're just worried about docs / settings / etc, I'd suggest skipping virtualization and just use Windows Easy Transfer to make a clean break. I've used VMWare and Virtual PC a LOT in the past, but not used in a long time. I know some functionality for items 1 & 2 exist but wanted to get a comparative idea between the various options LISTED in the Link. I guess I was a little out of touch when I realized so many products existed just to do P to V. I remember only VMWare had that for a while. For me the ability to "share" & "copy" these files is critical. PS: Also, I may or may not have enough storage on the Win 7 x64 drive so I'll have to run the guest VM from a USB 2.0 HDD. Would that work okay? For now, if the suggestion give by someone from the other forum still holds. What are the pros vs cons of Disk2VHD vs VMWare? (Given the specifics of my scenario?)Esp Sharing Drive & Copying using RoboCopy/ Richcopy (To maintain Modified/ Created Dates .. Wish there was way to keep Accessed Date)

I tired to used "Map Network Drive" from within the 7 to map the C: drive of the XP machine, but unsuccessful!some useful info, the the workgroup on both machines is the same WORKGROUP,in the "Netwok"/"My Network Places" of either machine, I cannot see the other, from 7, I can remotedesktop the XP machine with all local drives available, remotely.previously, I have mapped between XP machines with no problem, but Im wondering this time why it doest work. is it due to 7-XP incompatibility

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

This is my situation: I have a virtual machine running, and a network drive which is mapped to that machine. The problem here is that when I am trying to login on windows, windows is first trying to connect to that mapped network drive - which it cannot because my virtual machine has to start up first. This results in a rather long login-time.So my question is, is there some (registry) setting which allows me set this connection timeout to 0? Or that it won't automatically reconnect the drive at login? Of course the setting 'Do not automatically reconnect at login' is too obvious and does not work, because it also removes the whole mapped network drive at system restart - in my situation the drive should be there, just not connected

Installing W7 using an old HDD on an old machine to install W7 on a new SSD to be used on a new machine.I'm currently using this old machine from '09 and its performance levels have died down a lot. I bought all the components to build a new machine except I didn't want to spend extra money on another HDD to install the OS on my new 180GB Intel SSD. So basically, I want to use the HDD from my old computer, install W7 onto the SSD, then transfer the drive to my new computer, and use it on the machine and just reinstall all my other files.

We used to map a network location an http site in Windows XP. Worked well, but under Windows 7 when we map the same location we show an empty folder and it should contain all the links from the site. I did notice that when we tried this on a different XP box we were prompted for the user ID and Password to login to the share (makes sense to me... ) but there was no prompt in Windows 7 - instead we just get "This Folder Is Empty" Did I miss something? We can access the website in IE... did not try to access the share using the computer name instead of the website... could try that.... however they use the mapping as above because they still use FrontPage to administer the site and this method provides the mappings etc that FrontPage likes to have.

But after a few seconds/minutes I can go to computers, click on it (red X) and it brings it up for the rest of the time or until I reboot the computer.

Trying to map a windows 7 drive to xp via network switch and Ethernet. I've given the 7 machine a static IP of 10.10.10.10 and the xp machine 10.10.10.11.
From the xp machine: type 10.10.10.10 and get credentials box. Insert user name and password and it connects immediately and shows "users" folder...no problem. However, if I try 10.10.10.10C$ or any other drive and enter the same user name and password it changes the user name to "computer name""user name" and nothing happens. I CAN'T GET THIS TO WORK AFTER 6 DAYS!
from the 7 machine: type 10.10.10.11 and connects without credentials needed. type 10.10.10.11c$ and get credentials box. put user name and password and immediately have access to that drive with no problems.
No matter what I try I cannot get to any drives on the windows 7 machine from the xp machine and its driving me crazy. It also will not work if I'm logged in with the same user name and password on each machine at the same time.

I've found GlovePIE program, but it felt so complicated, had a lot of options i felt lost and eventually left it. It had a lot of direct input stuff so it might be possible to map this micro-wheel.Then i found xpadder, there's still some outdated freeware version. I must admit software itself is pretty impressive, easy to use... but even if this software detects my gamepad's micro-wheel it can't be bound. Maybe paid and updated version would support it, i don't know.Btw. is there any way of using gamepad analog buttons/sticks in windows other then mapping it as mouse? (xpadder does it quite good)Because you know, mapping something analog as a keyboard key makes it digital... on or off.

I need to use a lot of greek letters (alpha, beta, ect) on a regular basis, along with modifications of these. It is a pain to have to use the numpad codes every time (when working with many of my formulas, I need to put in multiple codes for the same character due to recurring accents, bars, ect), so I would like to map them directly to my keyboard to make things easier.
I have looked into some programs such as SharpKeys and KeyTweak, but as far as I can tell they only let me move one key to another, not add entirely new characters.
Windows has the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator, which so far has been the best alternative (I can map anything I want to any key), but it does not seem to allow me to edit the numberpad.
I can't really get rid of any functions of any other keys, so I need to map to previously "unmapped" locations. Originally I wanted to use control + (x) (for example, control + a = alpha), but because most software has so many keyboard shortcuts this has been rendered more or less impossible to practically use. The number pad seems to be the logical choice, but the windows editor does not allow me to change my numberpad.
Is there any way around this, or some other program I can't find? If I could get this sorted, it could change how work is conducted across my entire university.

I am having issuse with an XP-win 7 upgrade.
When I use WET utility it tries to install all my files onto my small C:drive. The original .mig file comes from a computer with C: J: K: drives... the new comp just has C: and D:.
Why isn't it giving me an option to map the drives when I upgrade?
It tries to install on C drive then gives up when it runs out of space.
When I look at the map drive tab in WET it says 'no drives are available for mapping.'

Wow I am so frustrated right now I cant remember the last time I was so frustrated! I have installed two fresh installations of 7264 x64 on two desktops. They are connected to a private network. I want to share the hard drives in both of them (say, C/: and D:/ )but I was running into all kinds of issues!!!
1) Tried connecting from one, got an error username and password but I changed the username and password many times only to have the same issue. Also it said username for pc1/user but I was trying to connect to pc2
2) after finally somehow getting access to the shares on pc1 and pc2 I mapped the drives, and upon restarting the computer I was unable to reconnect to the drives! Got odd errors, unable to reconnect. Also permission errors... ???
3) Even after it seemed to be working, I shared C: drive, but could not access it!!! No permission! I granted full access to everybody, but still nothing.
Why is it so impossible to do such an easy task in windows 7?
All i want is PC1 and PC2 should have their entire harddrives shared with each other... Is that too much to ask? The guy I was installing this for, is super mad that after all that time he doesn't have what he wants.
