Installing Windows 7 Using An Old HDD On An Old Machine To Install Windows 7 On A New Machine?
Dec 17, 2012
Installing W7 using an old HDD on an old machine to install W7 on a new SSD to be used on a new machine.I'm currently using this old machine from '09 and its performance levels have died down a lot. I bought all the components to build a new machine except I didn't want to spend extra money on another HDD to install the OS on my new 180GB Intel SSD. So basically, I want to use the HDD from my old computer, install W7 onto the SSD, then transfer the drive to my new computer, and use it on the machine and just reinstall all my other files.

I have de-commissioned an older machine that I had installed W7 on, I wish to install the W7 from this machine to another, is this possible -if so how?I think I have read somewhere, that once W7 is installed on a machine - it can NEVER be used on any other machine, is this correct?

I purchased a computer that has windows 7 home premium installed. I also have a critical app that can only run on XP and the manuf. tells me that the app runs into problems when running on Windows 7's XP emulation. I installed a second HD in the PC, and it recognized and gave it a drive letter. Formatted it to make sure it was clean. (It was previously installed in a Dell with XP.also bought an XP SP3 OEM license CD, and followed the instructions in the tutorial on the subject. When trying to boot off the XP CD, I got a Blue Screen indicating that the installation was halted, damage to the machine, blah blah.

I replaced an XP machine with a Win7 machine. When I VPN into our 10 network I can't get to any 192.168 addresses. The XP machine works fine only the Win7 doesn't. I looked at a lot of settings but I can't find anything out of sorts.

ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers
-one is a windows xp 32
-one is a windows 7 64
ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

I have Windows Seven 7600 and i'm trying to share files with a XP SP2 machine!
Problems:
-XP machine can see Seven machine but can't access shared folders!
-Seven machine can see XP machine but when i'm trying to see shared folders it gives me an error(see on screenshot)
-Network map doesn't work(see screenshot)
-Both machines have same workgroup MSHOME but when i go to homegroup it says there is no people in the homegroup!(see on screenshots)
Other info:
Before i couldn't turn network discovery on,every time i was set it to on he was going to off so I searched on this forum(great forum) and finally i was able to turn it on,maybe others have this problem so there what i did:i go to start=>run=>services.msc and i turned on(also i switched them to automatic startup) these services DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services.
IPv6 currently is enabled!

I am doing a clean install using the upgrade DVD but on a virtual machine (on a Mac using VMWare Mac Fusion). Everything goes smooth and as per the tutorial except that once I arrive to the "Windows product key", it does not recognize the product key. I skipped that step and completed all other steps as indicated. However, I was unable to activate my windows 7 (last step) as it mentioned that the product is only for upgrade from older version and not for a clean install.
I do have windows XP copy but I would rather do a clean install.

atm i dual boot XP and windows 7 Ultimate (full retail, not OEM). i want to remove 7 from my machine so i can install it on a new machine. have read various posts how to do that, but the posts are all old and a bit of messing about involved. i dont want to mess up so what i wondered was if i used windows 7 manager to change 1st boot option to XP, then formatted the partition (same hdd as XP) that has 7 on it, would that save all the messing about trying to repair boot failures in XP and the boot option screen, making XP boot correctly? i could then format the old partition where 7 was afterwards.

Back in October my wife's machine had a malware infecion (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic423457.html). After much work by Gringo and me, the machine was declared clean. However, even at that time the Service Pack install would not complete. It would churn and try to install and reboot and certainly act like all was well and completing, but eventually it would say something like "Service Pack failed. Resorting to previous cnfiguration". With the holidays approaching, solving this issue was pushed to the back burner. Now that I have some time, I'd like to get the machine fully updated.

When I bought my Maingear machine, It came with an OEM copy of Windows 7 Professional. I have an old Dell in the other room I'd like to run Windows on. Can I use the disc that came with my Maingear machine to install Windows on the Dell? If I need to re-install Windows on the Maingear at some point, is that license going to work on the re-install or are these licenses a one time/one machine type thing?

On Friday I attempted to install windows 7 ultimate x64 My existing machine is a XP Pro SP3 machine and it meets the system requirements as per Windows 7 upgrade advisor I booted from DVD and followed the steps up to selecting where to installl windows 7
This list showed me
Disk 0 Partition 1
Disk 1 Partition 1
Disk 1 Partition 2
Disk 0 is my C drive where my windows xp is installed - 300GB disk Disk 1 is where is store my files: pictures, music, documents etc - 500GB disk Partition 2 of Disk 1 is unallocated 9GB I selected Disk 0 Partition 1 Then selected Disk Options Format Drive Clicked Ok to the message about destroying data And allowed the install to proceed What i intended / expected to happen was that windows 7 ultimate would be installed on drive C: (Disk 0) and that drive D: (Disk 1) would remain intact and untouched by the process The Windows 7 install completed successfully I logged on to my user account, activated my windows 7 copy I then looked at my disks and what i see is that: Drive C was formatted and windows 7 was installed there BUT The install process formatted drive D and copied the windows XP installation to that drive So i have lost a lot of data that i did not expect to, and, of course, had not backed up in ages. For now, anyway, thats beside the point.I then removed the windows 7 DVD from the drive and rebooted the PC When the disk was removed the machine booted to Windows XP - running from the copy taken earlier on Drive D However, when i replaced the DVD to try to boot to windows 7 again, it began the installation process from the start?I dont remember selecting a dual boot option during the initial install, but maybe the steps i took led me to something like that by some default?

For some reason, I cannot install Windows 7 onto this new gateway PC that I have, but am able to do it on my older PC. Both are capable of running 64 bit, both have new and working memory, hardware. Now I understand that when you do install windows for the first time, your hard drive "marries" your motherboard. Thus when I put the hard drive into the new machine after a fresh install, it gets stuck on "windows is starting" and refuses to boot (ClassPNP.SYS in safe mode).

I am working on a Dell Studio 1745 running Win7 64 Home Premium. I need to run a piece of hardware (Tascam US122) that is incompatiable with the 64bit OS. My plan is to partition the drive and install Win 7 32bit on the new partition so I can run the mentioned hardware. I've done this on another machine (Dual Boot XP and Win 7) and ran into a problems with the bootloader. I learned to install older OS FIRST because of that. I'm wondering if installing Win7 32bit on a current Win7 64bit machine will cause a similar problem with bootloaders? I'd rather not have to mess with the bootloaders, but I really need to run this hardware.

I needed to upgrade anyway, so I bought a new motherboard, new SATA HDD and a new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium..I had problems with th initial install, it started hanging three quarters of the way through, I checked online and found that if I disconnected all USB connections it installed fine. Now installed it won't load up correctly, or if it does it crashes almost straight away, it runs fine in safe mode, but I can't use Windows Update in safe mode.Rather than reinstall again.I've got the feeling the problem may relate to the build rather than the software, but wanted to check if anyone had experienced similar problems?
