Installing Windows 7 Upgrade In Virtual Machine (VMWare Mac Fusion)
Sep 5, 2011
I am doing a clean install using the upgrade DVD but on a virtual machine (on a Mac using VMWare Mac Fusion). Everything goes smooth and as per the tutorial except that once I arrive to the "Windows product key", it does not recognize the product key. I skipped that step and completed all other steps as indicated. However, I was unable to activate my windows 7 (last step) as it mentioned that the product is only for upgrade from older version and not for a clean install.
I do have windows XP copy but I would rather do a clean install.

I am trying to install Windows 7 on a VMware 7 virtual machine, and it is asking for a driver. Windows 7 installs on just about any hardware you can throw at it. I have tried it on an ancient workstation with SCSI drives, and it installs without a problem. The same with serial ATA machines. Under Windows XP you would have to first supply it with a driver.
But now when I try to install Windows 7 on a VMware 7 virtual machine, it won't install. After the preliminary steps of asking for language and localization, it asks for a driver. Any idea why it does that, and what kind of driver it wants, and where I can get hold of one?

Has anyone tried ReadyBoost on a virtual Windows 7 machine on a Mac running VMWare Fusion?
I am running Windows 7 on a Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM and the Virtual Windows machine really slows everything down globally. I have tried configuring the Windows VR with 2GB, 1.5GB and 1GB of RAM. Configuring the virtual machine with more than 2GB of RAM really slows down the Mac. Hoping that ReadyBoost might improve things.

I have Windows XP Pro on a Boot Camp partition of my Mac Book Pro. I have gone through the arduous process of creating an .iso file and have installed Windows 7 into a new virtual machine. It is a clean install since there was nothing else there. Now I cannot get past the activation screen, where I re-enter the Product Key, whether the activation check box is filled in or not, I get an error.
Any ideas about 1 - what is the source of the problem?
2 - how to deal with it?

For those who want to try out SUSE LINUX 11.4 (KDE version) without hassle of install etc then you can download a vmware version with a lot of apps already installed. The link also gives a few other Linux distro choices. These should also work with VMPLAYER too if you don't have vmware workstation.VMware image and appliance download Use the Bittorrent download to keep the server load bandwidth down -- BTW this is a 100% TOTALLY LEGAL and GOOD use of Bittorrent - all torrents aren't illegal / pirated software. Loads of linux distros are supplied this way as well.(Hope not against Forum rules - but I do know lots of people have an interest in trying out / learning Linux and by running as a VM on Windows seems to me an EXCELLENT way of not only learning about Linux but also discovering the great use of Virtual Machines too).

When im trying to connect to my personal computer from the virtual machine ill get the errors listed in the title depending on the network selected for the vmware machine being NAT/Bridged ect , as Ive played around with them to see if it will work.

just downloaded the leaked windows 8 (downloaded the newer better version) and im trying to install in vmware just to have a look at it, i know it has hardly any driver support and is buggy ect.So when i try and install i get the 0x000000D5 error and it asked me to restart. My vmware supports up to windows 7 64bit and apparently the windows 8 installer uses the same architecture, so has anyone been successful installing this via vmware or any other virtual app?

I have Win 7 Professional x64, and whenever I attach a USB device (my mp3 player, to update its firmware), it installs the drivers needed, then after about 30 seconds automatically detaches (that is, it is shared and auto-reattaches to Windows 7). I have uninstalled and then reinstalled XP mode, uninstalled and reinstalled the Virtualization drivers, and tried using different USB ports. how to make it stay attached until XP Mode is hibernated?

I'm currently building a Server as well as in the market to snag a new laptop. How would I go about making my computer a virtual machine so that I could port over to my new gig.
Reason for this is that eventually I would love to get myself more "Organized" with where I keep important documents versus random crap. Stored all over my various machines.

i am trying to install nt 4.0 in vmware player with windows 7 home 64 bit system as host. while installing i receive a message during the nt setup that states, "setup has determined thay your computers startup hard disk is new, or have been erased, or that an operating system is installed on your computer with which windows nt cannot coexist".it goes on to state that "continuing may damage or destroy the existing operating system." it continues "if your hard drive is new or has been erased or you want to discard its current content press enter to continue setup."is this a normal message? i saw a Internet video showing the install of nt 4.0 and did not see the author getting this message. my concern is damaging my host os(windows 7) by continuing with the installation.

I have an XP virtual machine running on a 64-bit Win 7 host. I have a home wireless network that I need to access from the XP VM in order to use printers attached to the other computers on the network. All computers currently on the network have the same workgroup name. I have networking on the VM set to use the wireless adapter on the host laptop. With this configuration I can see and access the host, but I cannot see nor access any other computers on the network.
Now, it seems to me that I will need to run the XP Network Wizard to set up the network on the VM before I am able to see the network, but after reading dozens of articles and posts on networking a VM, I have never seen this step mentioned. (I am at work now, so I can't test this out on my network until later.) So, my questions are:
(1) Do I need to run the XP Network wizard to get the VM to join the wireless network, and
(2) if I don't need to run the wizard, what DO I need to do to get this to work?

At my work we are in the process of upgrading our network from server 2003 and xp on the clients to server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 on the clients. We have some productivity software that will not run on windows 7 64 bit so we have installed the XP mode virtual machine in order to run that software. The software installs fine and runs fine. The problem we are having is some of the software is used to program PLC's and so we need to be able to talk with these devices over the network at their IP addresses. I have configured the "virtual" ethernet adapter and windows 7 ethernet adapter the same. From the cmd prompt in win 7 i can obviously ping the devices and communicate with anything on the network however when I am running the XP mode I cannot access anything on the network. The virtual mode isnt recognizing any of the physical computers resources. Is there a way to make it so when running XP mode and the programs in XP mode the computer can communicate with other devices over the network?

I'm about to try and get a hackintosh running. And this needs to be OSX Lion since my graphics card is not supported in Leopard Snow. Problem is, to my knowledge, Lion is only installable from within OSX Leopard Snow. But since I can't run Leopard Snow, I'm sort of stuck.
My question is, would it be possible to install an operating system on a HDD from within a virtual machine? Such as VMware or virtualbox. Because then I'd be able to push the OS into the harddrive and then just boot of the harddrive?

running a Virtual XP with vmware and build 7137 -- if you need to change a DVD/CD Windows doesn't refresh the data / directories unless you choose EJECT in the context menu.
Just unloading and reloading a new CD doesn't seem to work.
Can be a problem if installing a product which needs multiple CD's (such as an Oracle DB) on a VM .
