Student Upgrade On Virtual Machine - Activation

I have Windows XP Pro on a Boot Camp partition of my Mac Book Pro. I have gone through the arduous process of creating an .iso file and have installed Windows 7 into a new virtual machine. It is a clean install since there was nothing else there. Now I cannot get past the activation screen, where I re-enter the Product Key, whether the activation check box is filled in or not, I get an error.

Any ideas about 1 - what is the source of the problem?

2 - how to deal with it?

I think that my question says it all. I moved my VHDs to another location, upgraded both virtual pc and virtual xp to RTM and now I can't use the VHD that I had moved that was my original Virtual XP instance.

I am running a boot of win 7 on virtual box using a Compaq V6205NR with 2 gigs of ram. I cannot get it to see the sound hardware or the wireless adapter. Is this an issue with the virtual machine or the Vbox vm handler.?

Error - Could Not Register The Virtual Machine
Win7 RTM, VPC RC, new install, have removed virus protection. No useful events in log.I get this error when I try to open a VMC file. It also says "The virtual machine configuration could not be added. User does not have sufficient access rights"The Virtual Machine shell extension also doesn't work.

If I open the VMwizard app manually it works until the last step with an access denied message. I have removed and installed this now several times with out progress, any suggestions welcomed. Funny thing is VPC works fine if I switch users. Help me fix this please. How can I reset the Vm settings for the current user? Have read all similar threads, have check ACL's and tried a restore to a prior point.

Virtual PC On Machine Without Hardware Virtualizations
I have a machine that does NOT have hardware virtualization capabilities, but I am testing the Windows 7 64 bit version. I had installed the new Virtual PC and associated HD only to find out that my machine couldn't run it. (would have been nice if the installer had warned me before going through the full installs of two things, but that's another issue).

So today I notice that Windows 7 has in the "Action Center" two messages that claim they will solve two issues.  One says: "Address a problem with Virtual PC Host Bus" and the other says "Address a problem with USB Virtualization Connector". So like a fool, I click the link to download the two "FIXES". They install and want me to reboot.

I do, and when Windows 7 64 bit comes back up, I launch the Virtual PC 2007, which I have to have as some of my development tools won't run in 64 bit, and receive a message that Virtual PC 2007 has been blocked, due to some known compatibility issues. Well that's freaking grate. That problem solver thing really solved the problem.  So, I did a system restore back to before my problem was so elegantly solved.

Now the Virtual PC 2007 works again, but I am *VERY* concerned that the release version of Windows 7 I have on order is going to put me in the penalty box again, where I can't run my business if I choose to use the 64 bit version. How exactly does Microsoft intend to preserve some level of backward compatibility on machines that do not have hardware virtualizations?

I've personally tried Windows 7 on more machines that *COULDN'T* run the new Virtual PC than could, so I see it as a HUGE problem, if the older Virtual PC 2007 is not going to be a supported configuration. So what's the plan Microsoft?  Do I just keep my XP which works fine, or do I have an upgrade path that doesn't kill my ability to conduct business?

USB TV Cards On A Virtual Machine
In general this is a no no as most video apps usually need direct access to the hardware which the Virtual Bios doesn't see.

I was wondering however has anyone managed to get o USB TV stick working on a Virtual Machine yet whether using VBOX or VMWARE.

If you did what is the TV stick you are using and what software did you run for the TV application.

Would the TV function in Windows XP Media Center edition work in a VM.

Note that the BBC Iplayer works in a VM (Vmware) so SOME video will of course work in a VM.

Canon N67OU Virtual Machine
I read the post about running a Canon N67OU scanner in a virtual machine in Win 7.

Can someone describe how this is done? Must you install the Canon drivers each time you want to use the scanner or what?

I've used virtual drives that 'disappear' when I am done using them. But I don't get how that would work with my scanner.

Also, will a DOS program run under Win 7 64 bit or must it be the 32 bit only?

PS: I am building a new machine and was going to make it dual boot XP and Win 7 since there are so few drivers for things like my HP printer. But if I can get everything to work under Windows 7 I'll forget the dual boot thing.

XP Virtual Machine And CD/DVD Problem
running a Virtual XP with vmware and build 7137 -- if you need to change a DVD/CD Windows doesn't refresh the data / directories unless you choose EJECT in the context menu.

Just unloading and reloading a new CD doesn't seem to work.

Can be a problem if installing a product which needs multiple CD's (such as an Oracle DB) on a VM .

No Network Visibility Within The XP Virtual Machine
Running Windows 7 RC 64-bit. Everything working fine within Windows XP Mode. All of the network and network devices are visible. All systems have same user account and password. Network is workgroup called WORKGROUP.

Per the instructions, I uninstalled the previous versions of Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, downloaded and installed the new RC versions of these products. Everything installed fine, but within the XP virtual machine I do not have access to any of the other resources on the my network. Previously they were all visible.

I went though the normal XP network set up, but the only thing that is visible within XP is the XP machine itself. My network is a simple non-domain network named WORKGROUP. What do I have to do within the Windows XP Mode virtual machine to see the printers and other systems on the network.

Installation Driver For VMware 7 Virtual Machine
I am trying to install Windows 7 on a VMware 7 virtual machine, and it is asking for a driver. Windows 7 installs on just about any hardware you can throw at it. I have tried it on an ancient workstation with SCSI drives, and it installs without a problem. The same with serial ATA machines. Under Windows XP you would have to first supply it with a driver.

But now when I try to install Windows 7 on a VMware 7 virtual machine, it won't install. After the preliminary steps of asking for language and localization, it asks for a driver. Any idea why it does that, and what kind of driver it wants, and where I can get hold of one?

Virtual Machine Screen Resolution Issue
I was wondering if you could help me with a computer problem that I have. I like to play a really old DOS game called Championship Manager 9798. This was only compatible with Win 98 & you'd to reboot the machine in DOS mode to play it. When XP came out, I was able to play this through a DOS box. When Vista came out, I was then able to play it with a virtual machine, with Win 98 as the operating system. I could make the screen go full size by pressing Alt+Enter &this was on a Dell wide screen monitor, & everything ran fine.

My problem is that I have just bought an HP wide screen laptop. The Virtual machine runs, but when I press Alt+Enter, it goes full screen, but there are two black bands about an inch wide down the side of the screen, meaning that the game is only about half of the screen in width.
Is there anything that you can think of that can be done? I’ve tried the Internet to see if there's anything, but all it says is that Virtual Machines aren't with wide screens. I’m confused with this, as it works on my wide screen monitor (with my PC), or are there different variations of “wide screen”?

Someone suggested RDP onto the virtual machine, which you cant do with Win 98. SO Ive tried to go back to getting the game to work via DOS box on an XP virtual machine. I managed this, but when I RDP onto it, all you see is a small DOS icon in the middle of the screen, so Im totally stuck & would give my right arm if you could get it to work properly on my laptop.

may I install the english version, even when my RC is spanish?

Virtual Machine Booting From A Network Location
I am looking at a solution to tap into the portability of virtualization across hardware. i.e. if I have my development environment as a VM, I can access it and bring it up from any machine on the network. This will enable me to be not attached to any physical machine and allow me to access my development machine seamlessly from anywhere if it is stored in a network location. I have mainly two questions around such a setup.

1) Is there anyway of hosting the VM without incurring the expense of both the host operating system and the guest operating system? The only functionality of the host operating system to host the VM.

2) Is it viable from a performance stand point to have a VM booted up on a machine from a vhd placed at a network location?

How To Install Ubuntu In Win 7 Virtual Machine ?
When trying to install Ubuntu in the virtual machine one gets to the screen where the installer says it is about to format the installation disc and a swap file in the Linux format. What steps need to be taken to install Ubuntu, or other Linux distro, as a Virtual machine without having to create a Linux formatted partition? Or is it necessary to first create a Linux formatted partition (journaled or whatever) and direct the Virtual Machine to install Ubuntu there?

I am sold on the XP Virtual machine and Win7 as it allows me to run older Windows programs that will not run on Vista 64. I am inexperienced and  curious as to how far one can go with the Virutal PC program in Win7 without accidentally reformatting the hard drive. Out of curiousity would it be possible to install as virtual machines older and even defunct OSes like BeOS and OS2 which I have copies of lying around somewhere?

Image Current Vista Installation And Run On Win 7 As Virtual Machine
My main desktop is a Vista Ultimate machine and I would like to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate on it. However, I have Adobe Web Standard CS3 set up on this machine and if I re-installed it on Windows 7 Ultimate I would have to get it all set up again for preferences, to point to my web sites, etc which I don't want to do. I would rather replace Adobe Web Standard when CS5 comes out and install it fresh on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Using Microsoft technologies is there any way I can somehow image my current Vista Ultimate installation and run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Ultimate and still have Adobe Web Standard CS3 work as it did before?

Question About Student Upgrade
I am a student with Vista Home Premium right now and I want to upgrade to 7 using the $30 student upgrade.

A couple of questions though.

If I have read this right, (Windows 7 US Online Store - Student Registration) then if I buy and install Windows 7 Home Premium I won't need to backup my files? Is this true? If so, does that mean all of my files will be in the same places? And also what about my programs like Office and all of the other many programs I have installed right now?? I am just trying to clarify this so I don't end up not backing up my data and end up losing it accidentally.
