Use Student Download To Upgrade
Can an .iso of the Win 7 Student download be used to "upgrade" a new laptop with the same version of Win 7, thus getting rid of unwanted programs? In other words, do a clean install using the .iso on DVD, then using the registration key from the new Win 7 laptop?
Assuming it will work, how much problem is there likely to be with drivers?

Cannot Unpack The Win 7 Student Upgrade Download
after several sessions of re-downloading the 32 bit Professional version and many more of rerunning the extract - the results are the same. It stops with "unexpected error" while unpacking Box1.   Surely there must be a straightforward ISO image that can be accessed! I don't knwo what the relationship between Microsoft and Digital River is, but the upgrade offer is made by Microsoft so I do expect them to assit in supporting this- not simply pass me on to Digital River (as the issues with DR support are well known).

Win 7 Student Download Error
I am a student on xp who has downloaded windows 7 professional. When attempting to 'unloading the box' it gets about a third of the way along and then gets an error that is an 'unspecified error'. I have tried redownloading which didn't work and have tried moving the files to a different location which also gave the same error. Any advice/solutions?

Student Download Edition Hangs At Starting Screen
I purchased, downloaded and attempted to install the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Pro from Digital river. I tried several different installs and each one has failed. I ran the Windows 7 Advisor and the system passed all tests except for the video card will not run Aero, which I believe is a drive issue. My system specs are: Asus A8r32MVP-Deluxe MB   AMD Athlon 4800 X2   2GB RAM   ATI Radeon X1900XTX 512MB Video Card   1st Attempt - Create bootable DVD from the files downloaded from digital river.    1. Downloaded and ran the files to extract the install files to the desktop    2. Followed the instructions to create a bootable DVD using oscdimg.exe     3. Booted up the computer and booted from DVD    4. Recieved an error message that there was: CD/DVD Device Driver Missing. WHich is funny, because it had to first read that DVD in order to get that error message.    5. I gave up this route and moved on to the next/ 2nd Attempt - Install from the files from Windows.    1. Since the first install did not work, I booted back into XP and started the install process from Windows.    2. I selected the Custom install option and followed the prompts of selected my install drive    3. The process began normal until it came time to reboot, at which time the system came to the "Starting Windows" and stops. I let it sit like that for about an hour and it never changed.     4. At this point, I had to reinstall Windows XP because it would no longer boot.    5. Next attempt 3rd Attempt - Install from bootable USB    1. Using the ISO created in the earlier attempt, I created a bootable USB drive using the Windows 7 DVD/USB tool.    2. Long story short, still hanging at Starting Windows 4th Attempt - Complete reinstall of Windows XP Pro. Complete Re-Download of files from Digital River.     1. Re-install of Windows XP Pro    2. Re-download of Windows 7 Pro files    3. Hard drive check to ensure there is nothing wrong with the drive    4. Discovered an error in SMART, so selected a different drive for install. (First drive was IDE, second was SATA)    5. Started the Custom install process and selected the Up to Date option.    6. When computer rebooted, stuck once again at "Starting Windows". I read the following post:: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/918482ef-e5b0-473c-a0f4-7eb72efccc4e  but it was no help. I am unable to upload my log to Skydrive because the installation never finishes. Unless there is a way to access them from a DOS prompt, or whatever it would be called since DOS is gone.  UPDATE: 5th Install Attempt    1. Formatted system drive using Win XP install CD to NTFS.    2. Rebooted using the USB drive and seemed to get passed the Starting Windows screen    3. Selected the custom install option    4. Got to the select drive to install to screen, and when I selected the system drive, got an error that it could not create a new system partition.  That is now 5 attempts, while reading every post I can find on the subject. Attempting one more setup using install DVD but so far still stuck on the Starting Windows screen once more.  7th time is a charm. I was finally able to complete the Windows 7 install. If anyone is interested in the numerous steps or trial and error I did, just send me a message.

Canadian Student Digital River Download Product Key
I downloaded from Digital River yesterday with the student discount, and had the same problem as everyone else "unboxing" the download. I used the fix that's been circling round the forums and have got it installed and working. The only thing I'm missing is a product key. Wasn't Digital River supposed to give me one in my confirmation email? I've received nothing of the sort, and would really like to activate this product I've purchased. I have product keys from previous versions of Windows that I've bought, but the machine I installed Windows 7 on was using Linux as its main operating system. Any thoughts?

Question About Student Upgrade
I am a student with Vista Home Premium right now and I want to upgrade to 7 using the $30 student upgrade. A couple of questions though. If I have read this right, (Windows 7 US Online Store - Student Registration) then if I buy and install Windows 7 Home Premium I won't need to backup my files? Is this true? If so, does that mean all of my files will be in the same places? And also what about my programs like Office and all of the other many programs I have installed right now?? I am just trying to clarify this so I don't end up not backing up my data and end up losing it accidentally.

Win 7 Student Upgrade
I have the option of going for the Windows 7 student deal and have a few questions that I want to clarify before I go for it: - Is it the retail upgrade version, not the OEM upgrade? So I'll be able to use this key on a brand new box later on down the road? - Is a clean install of the upgrade version exactly the same as a clean install of the retail, bar the MediaBootInstall registry key being 1 instead of 0 (if the installer doesn't find any previous version of Windows)? I.e. Is it just the installer that differs, with no difference between an actual clean install of the upgrade and retail versions? - I installed and have been using the RTM for a few weeks, can I just use the upgrade key to activate this version?

Student Upgrade From 32bit To 64bit
I have a second 1 terrabyte empty drive I want to install Windows 7 onto. Can I set up the new drive within Vista, do my Student Upgrade with the exe and choose to do a Clean install and have Windows 7 install (and activate) onto the new drive? Secondly, I want to do this so I may move my critical program files from Vista to 7. Will doing a clean install on a separate drive still format the old drive?

Question For $30 Student Upgrade Win 7
I ordered the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade - 32 bit for $30 with my .edu student email. I have it installed on my computer, and I have a cd key aswell that came with it online. I was wondering 2 things: 1: Can I use my key to install it on multiple computers? 2: Can I go to that same site, use my same .edu email and pay and download and install more? My whole family wants windows 7.

Student Upgrade - Product Key
My problem is that I have a desktop with Windows XP installed. For Christmas I decided to purchase the Windows 7 offer as a Student off Microsoft. My hard drive however, was rather small so it suggested upgrading hard drive and because I was upgrading from XP I had to do a clean installation. Because it said this I assumed I could just install it onto my new hard drive and type in the product key that I purchased! However, when I tried to enter my product key it stated that the key was only to be used for Upgrades and not clean installations..even though I would of had to do a clean installation on my old hard drive. I do not have an installation disk for my windwos XP so I am struggling to find a way to activate my Windows 7 on my PC! And its going to expire in 20days and I have Uni work to do and pending examinations! I am not able to purchase a new product key as it will cost too much, and seems as I have both an XP and Windows 7 liscnse I dont see why I should have to pay more.

The Windows 7 launch seems to have gone off mostly roses and sunbeams, but we're hearing today that quite a few people have had issues installing the downloadable $29 student upgrade edition on 32-bit Vista -- apparently the file doesn't unpack to an ISO, but instead to an executable and two bundles that don't function properly, and eventually the process errors out with a 64-bit app trying to launch on 32-bit systems. It's possible to create an ISO using some hackery, but the install process seems to be 50/50 after that -- we've heard of both success and further crashes. For it's part, Microsoft says it's looking into things, so hopefully a newly repackaged download will be forthcoming -- every party has its ups and downs, right? How to make a DVD of that student-only Windows 7 So you're a student who has taken advantage of the crazy upgrade deal from win741.com but instead of looking at a nice, shiny ready-to-install ISO of Windows 7, Digital River sent you a handful of random files and no ISO! Fortunately, it's very easy to turn them into an installable ISO! Follow this very quick guide to get Windows 7 installing right away. To start with, make sure your downloaded Windows 7 files (the 'expandedSetup' directory) is unzipped into C: -- it'll make things easier later. 1. Download this tool -- alternatively you can obtain the official pack from Microsoft, but that's a whole darn gigabyte. 2. Unzip and move oscdimg.exe to your System32 directory (likely to be C:WindowsSystem32) 3. Open an elevated command prompt. In Vista you do this by typing 'cmd' into your 'Start Menu' and hitting ctrl+shift+enter.In XP, just type 'cmd' into the Run dialogue (Windows Key+R or from your Start Menu). 4. Type (or copy and paste) the following into your command prompt (this will vary a little, depending on where you've put your expandedSetup folder): oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:expandedSetupootetfsboot.com" –h "C:expandedSetup" C:WIN7.ISO 5. Student Upgrade On Virtual Machine - Activation
I have Windows XP Pro on a Boot Camp partition of my Mac Book Pro. I have gone through the arduous process of creating an .iso file and have installed Windows 7 into a new virtual machine. It is a clean install since there was nothing else there. Now I cannot get past the activation screen, where I re-enter the Product Key, whether the activation check box is filled in or not, I get an error. Any ideas about 1 - what is the source of the problem? 2 - how to deal with it?

Student Upgrade - Disk Kit Question
When ordering via the student offer (UK) you are given the option to purchase the "disk kit" for an extra �9. This might be a dumb question but does anyone know for sure if this "disk kit" is basically just the Windows 7 disk as you would buy it in a shop? I suppose what I am trying to ascertain is whether it is a regular bootable installation disk. I am planning on getting it and figure that I will be happy to wait for the disk to arrive and install from that rather than faffing around with ISO's and making the downloaded file into a bootable DVD.

Digitalriver Student Promotion: Wrong Language Upgrade
I recently purchased Win7 x64 upgrade through the Canadian student promotion I got through e-mail. Download worked fine, everything worked fine until I started installing the upgrade... I got the promotional e-mail in English, my Vista version is French... Nothing in the e-mail and the purchasing process mentionned that there were multiple language versions... So now I can't upgrade since we can't upgrade fr-CA to en-CA... Anyway to get an fr-CA upgrade download in replacement? I sent 2 messages to digitalriver with my order number and never got any reply (that was a month ago).And a suggestion: the language issues should be clearly indicated on the website, I didn't even know I had an english-only version before I started installing it.

Student Upgrade From Vista Ultimate 64 Bit Without A Clean Install
I purchased the academic version of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit under an apparent misunderstanding that I could upgrade and not have to do a complete reinstall which would cost me 3 days of thesis development time to reinstall the Autodesk, Adobe & other software that I use. Could someone please explain to me why (after paying a higher price for Vista Ultimate in the first place) I cannot purchase a student version of Windows 7 Ultimate or upgrade without a clean install which requires a complete reinstall of all of the programs on my computer? Is there something that I am overlooking?

Win 7 Upgrade Via Download
I have a student who has taken advantage of the Microsoft offer and ordered via download Windows 7. This turned out to perform an upgrade of Windows 7 over the existing Windows XP Home Edition. I have been tasked with upgrading the hard drive on this laptop over Christmas so would like to know where the install files will be for me to rebuild the OS once the new hard drive has been installed. I have asked them to check for an ISO file but they tell me there isnt one. Does Windows 7 just download and install wiping off any traces of the install files, if so, whats the procedure for re-installing in the event of hardware failure?

I have not seen an answer to this question yet. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and I want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional using the $29.95 student upgrade promotion. Is this possible? And if so, would it be an "upgrade" over the top of my current edition, or would it instead be a clean install? It looks like the promotion is geared towards users with XP or Vista, but I would like to try Windows 7 Professional, now that I have tested the Home edition.

Student And Faculty 32-bit Upgrade Version To 64-bit
I recently purchased a copy of Win 7 Ultimate upgrade for Student and Faculty under the Microsoft Student Select program. Unfortunately at the time they did not specify whether it was the 32 bit or the 64-bit version and my understanding was that upgrade version included both 32 and 64 bit versions. When I received it, it was the 32-bit version only. My question is this; 1)Is there a 64-bit version of the Win 7 Ultimate upgrade for student and faculty? 2)Are the product codes interchangeable between the 32/64 bit versions (I read in a thread they were for the retail versions, was not sure this applied to Student and Faculty version) 3)How I can get a hold of the 64-bit version? As the operating of the programme says they only have the 32-bit version.

Clean Install With Upgrade DOWNLOAD
i am planning to buy the upgrade version of Windows 7 (i have genuine vista) but im planning on buy it online from the microsoft store, i read the clean install from upgrade sticky but i noticed this; ' This will show you how to do a Clean Install using a retail Upgrade Windows 7 installation disc.' I notice the words 'retail' and 'disc' i am wondering if i download the official version is that considered retail? and im not really sure how it works, i have never downloaded an OS before, do i need to burn it to a disk once its downloaded? If so will it then work like the regular disk allowing me to do what the sticky then goes on to explain, or will it know its my home made 50cent disk and think my copy is fake?

If you registered forr the Windows 7 Upgrade option disk and your manufacturer is supposed to send you a voucher that you can redeem online to microsoft to get them to ship you a disc, can you download the disk as an option? because I have no cd drive.

Unable To Download Needed Upgrade Drivers
Today is my first day on Window's 7 and I've been having problems with it all day. I get the "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver version 181.71..." so I download the propper drivers and it won't let me open it. This is what it looks like: I can't find the file location either. Also, not only does that not work but my NVIDIA Control Panel does not work. I double click, the loading circle comes up for 3 seconds and then disappears. I can't just not download drivers, it's any .exe file. I am not good with computers so if you explain it, please, explain it to me like I am a two year old learning to put together sentences.
