Restore A Two Drive System Image Onto One Drive?

Oct 13, 2012

My c: is 128 GB and darn near full. I have Win7 and most used programs on it. My b: (179 GB of 500) has my libraries and less used programs. I have a single windows image backup of both B & C on an external drive.

For example if I purchase a 500 GB hard drive can I restore that image to the new drive? Will it partition the C from the B on the new drive or just show it as seperate folders?

Does the new drive have to be greater than the sum of the allocated/unallocated space on both drives even though the image is less than 500GB?

All discussion will pertain to Windows 7 Backup w/ NTFS disks w/ample space. Period. It shouldn't matter if the disks are simple or dynamic. So Am I able to restore the system image from the HDD onto to the new boot disk?

Using System Image To Replace 750GB Drive With S 500GB Drive?

Sep 17, 2012

My 750gb hard disk is failing on a HP laptop that came preloaded with Windows 7 home prem. I have a SMALLER excellent 500gb, 7200 rpm hard disk that I'd like to replace the failing hard disk with. I've read that my Windows 7 System Repair DVD will not restore my recent system image (on NAS) to a smaller partition. The C:partition on the failing drive is well over 600gb but can shrink to 300gb. QUESTION Can I restore a system image from my larger drive "as is". If not, and I shrink my C: partition (contain windows) ay 350GB will I be able to restore the system image to where windows will boot?I have an old copy of (7.0) partition magic that I used to resize partitions on XP machines Can this old 32 bit partition magic safely resize my C: partition. If so, and I create a new system image can I restore it to the new disk?

Restore Windows 7 Image To Drive With XP

Mar 18, 2012

I had a hard drive fail, and I want to recover my recent backup/image from that failed drive, an image which was created with the Win 7 backup tool found in Control Panel. It's on an external hard drive. I of course want to recover it to a drive known to be good, such as the one that's in my computer now.If I have XP on said drive, can I make a partition and restore the 7 image to that new partition? Or would I not be able/allowed to have two Windows OS-es on the same drive, even on different partitions? It's XP Home and 7 Home Premium x64.

Restore From Full Image Just One Drive

May 29, 2012

I had made a full image of 3 drives using Win 7 backup tool. However, since then, I have removed 2 of the disks but I want to restore just one of the drives where the OS was installed (these are physical HDD= 3). Windows restore CD does not let me restore just one drive since the image is for all 3.Is there any way that I can force windows 7 to restore just one of the drives from the the full image with 3 drives? Unfortunately, the drives that I removed already have new data in another PC and pretty big (2T each). I don't to buy 2 drives just to install the OS image.

Image Restore From External Drive On USB 3.0 Does Not Work

Apr 20, 2011

I have just installed a 3TB external drive for backup purposes and was testing the image restore feature. If I use the external drive on the usb 3.0 port when entering F8/System Repair/Repair from image, the drive is not detected at all, when I plug it into the 2.0 port it is detected. Within windows itself the drive operates fine on the 3.0 hub. I am guessing its some kind of USB 3.0 driver issue within system repair but wondered if there is a work around. Not sure I want to sit and wait for a restore over 2.0 when it could be using 3.0!

Trying To Restore Windows 7 Disk Image Stored On WD Passport Drive

Sep 24, 2012

I have a compac (HP) laptop (CQ61-41us notebook), running WIN7 home premium, 64 bit. Aside from the normal file backup via the western digital software, I have several windows 7 generated iso images of my laptop stored on my external WD drive. Using windows repair disk, my computer does not recognize the external drive to access the disk images. It just asks to insert the last disk into optical drive. My images are on a folder on my external drive. There is no option to navigate to it! This is the first time I've needed to restore an image, and I can't access them! This should be an easy operation that could be started in a few minutes. I have been screwing around with this for more than 24 hours!

System Image To USB Flash Drive?

Mar 4, 2012

I need to create a system Image of my C drive. I m I right in thinking Windows Backup wont allow me to save that image onto a USB Flash drive?

What if I use something like paragon, does that allow the actual image to be put into a flash drive? I know they allow "bootable usb" but I guess that s the same as what the Windows 7 DVD/USB tool does right..i.e but the actual windows to boot into and then use an image in the HDD to restore?

Resore System Image From Network Storage Drive?

Apr 16, 2012

I have a HP Pavilion with Windows 7 Premium 64, and have my computer back up daily, with weekly system image back ups using the Windows back up utility. This backs up to a DLink DNS 323 network storage device. Last Friday my hard drive failed, and I didn't feel too bad becuase of my back ups. Yesterday after replacing the hard drive I tried using the System Repair Disc to restore the System Image, but couldn't locate anything on the network to restore. I checked with DLink support and they said this is a Windows issue. Hoping I can get some ideas how to proceed and get my data on the new hard drive. THe DLink site suggested that I try everything out before I need it to make sure it all works as planned. I would have no idea how to try out the System Repair Disc and restore the System Image without having a blank hard drive or jeopardizing the data on my current drive.

Installed A New Hard Drive But Can't Get System Image Restored?

Nov 10, 2011

I just installed a new hard drive after my previous one failed to start up. I have a backup image stored on an external WD Passport. The install went well. I turn on my tower with the Windows 7 recovery disc in, start up System Image Restore and plug in my Passport. The system restore recognizes my Passport and when I go through the wizard to reformat and partition the disk to match the layout of the recovery image, I get an error message saying "The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. *hyperlink* Details."Details states, "No disck that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. Try the following: 1) A probable system disk may have been excluded by mistake. a. Review the list of disks that you have excluded from the recovery for a likely disk. b. Type LIST DISK command in the DISKPART command interpreter. The probable system disk is usually the first disk listed. c. If possible,, remove the disk from the exclusion list and then retry the recovery.Tried that, my disk is not listed as an exclusion.2) A USB disk may have been assigned as a system disk. a. Detach all USB disks from the computer. b. Reboot into Windows Recovery Environment then reattach USB disks and retry the recovery.

System Image Backup Failed (on Same Hard Drive) - Error 0x80042407

Feb 26, 2012

I have 2x160gb intel SSD disks running as RAID0. Recently my motherboard had failed and I replaced it with new one (different model). Couldn't access OS because apparently some RAID data is kept on the motherboard and that was gone, so I decided to use a backup. Booted from windows 7 installation disk and selected backup,

I click on 'repair', get to the 'select a system image backup'. Select 'use the latest available system image (recommended). Click 'next' I get the message 'all disk to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image'. Click Yes. But then got an error saying:

"The system image restore failed. The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)"

Disk is completely empty with only 1 partition (deleted all partitions and reformatted and then created one). Before motherboard problem I had several partitions, but I imagine that restore would recreate them. Why do I get 'disk to small error' when I am restoring on the same disk? RAID configuration problem? Could stripe size be an issue here?

System Image On System Restore Disk Not Reading After Crash?

Using preinstalled Win 7 Home Premium 64bit on an HP 6813w Pavilion. The original hard drive, a Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 1Tb crashed.1) System Recovery discs was made along with a System Recovery with System Image disc.2) A more current System Image was made on an external hard drive. The Hitachi was replaced with the same model. Checked bios to make sure it was installed correctly.Under System Recovery, Image Restore, Select a System Image Backup there is nothing in the table to choose from as far as a source (disc drive or external drive).A) System Recovery (3 discs) has the HP preinstall file folder on the 3rd disc but is not read by the System Recovery program.B) Under System Restore, Image Restore, Advanced, it asks for a network or driver to be installed. That opens up the directory of C: which is the external hard drive. Under WindowsImageBackup the computer name is identified followed by three entries:[CODE]It seems to me the Recovery and System Restore discs are not functional. Am not a technical person but I have taken this as far as I know how at this point.Printed out all the instructions from HP and Microsoft to follow step by step but the failed discs will not allow me to move forward.

Windows 7 System Image Restore?

Pages and pages of disk errors. *Side note: Sure would've been nice if Windows would have said something */End Side note* So I have a Windows System Image and Windows Backup on a secondary drive that appears healthy. But I'm just curious what I'm looking at when my new hard drive gets here.Has anyone ever used the Windows 7 Image Backup/Restore utility? Can you use the image on a different hard drive or just when repairing the original? Will my programs be saved or just data? Just curious questions. All of my Google searches are bringing up reviews about the utility from the Win 7 RC days so I'm not real sure what I'm getting myself into here.
