The only option available is my hard drive partition on which i also had saved a system image. Though windows recommends External hard drive for backing up image when backing up the system.
I just purchased a second Dell M6300 and cloned the hd using Acronis. The cloning is supposed to produce a bootable drive. My problem is that the M6300 I just purchased has a 64 bit processor. After installing the 32 bit cloned hd my 64 bit unit won't boot. I tried using the Windows repair utility but that could not fix the issue. I tried installing Windows 7 32bit software again but it won't allow me to install it without booting to windows as I want to keep the programs and data already on the hd. Any ideas on how to get my cloned 32 bit os to boot on a 64 bit computer?

I've read that my Windows 7 System Repair DVD will not restore my recent system image (on NAS) to a smaller partition. The C:partition on the failing drive is well over 600gb but can shrink to 300gb. If not, and I shrink my C: partition (contain windows) ay 350GB will I be able to restore the system image to where windows will boot?I have an old copy of (7.0) partition magic that I used to resize partitions on XP machines Can this old 32 bit partition magic safely resize my C: partition. Started adding a few programs from my Vista install and thought the drive was to small, so cloned the drive unto a backup drive and installed a 1TB drive. Cloned the image back unto the new drive, but when I try to dual boot, it doesn't see Windows 7. I tried booting from the Windows 7 disk, to do a startup repair, but it doesn't see Windows 7 installed on the new drive.
Any ideas?
My c: is 128 GB and darn near full. I have Win7 and most used programs on it. My b: (179 GB of 500) has my libraries and less used programs. I have a single windows image backup of both B & C on an external drive.
For example if I purchase a 500 GB hard drive can I restore that image to the new drive? Will it partition the C from the B on the new drive or just show it as seperate folders?
Does the new drive have to be greater than the sum of the allocated/unallocated space on both drives even though the image is less than 500GB?
I need to create a system Image of my C drive. I m I right in thinking Windows Backup wont allow me to save that image onto a USB Flash drive?
What if I use something like paragon, does that allow the actual image to be put into a flash drive? I know they allow "bootable usb" but I guess that s the same as what the Windows 7 DVD/USB tool does right..i.e but the actual windows to boot into and then use an image in the HDD to restore?
I do back-up using "Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsBackup and Restore" and select image, but my flashdrive says "The drive is not a valid back-up location".
What is the issue?
I am stack at certain process while trying to load a system image onto new hard drive using Windows 7 x64 image restore function from the windows 7 disk, I got my primary drive 500 gigs with windows 7 and all my files,I made a system image onto another clean internal hard drive size 160 gigs and I was successful, now I disconnected my 500 gigs primary hard drive, attached a new 250 gig hard drive and I proceeded to load the system image, I boot to windows 7 cd,I get the option to repair , click on restore from system image file , everything looks good computer finds the hard drive 160 gigs with the system image as source,I press next look for the target drive and I see it there 250 gigs drive thats freshly formatted ..., I select the target press next it all looks good and then I get the screen that there is no target hard drive... I made sure that this hard drive is not being excluded from format and new process... I am lost ... what am I doing wrong here, I reformatted those 2 drives twice I tried this operation about 8 times , I get the error message each time I am attempting to create this new system image..

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion with Windows 7 Premium 64, and have my computer back up daily, with weekly system image back ups using the Windows back up utility. This backs up to a DLink DNS 323 network storage device. Last Friday my hard drive failed, and I didn't feel too bad becuase of my back ups. Yesterday after replacing the hard drive I tried using the System Repair Disc to restore the System Image, but couldn't locate anything on the network to restore. I checked with DLink support and they said this is a Windows issue. Hoping I can get some ideas how to proceed and get my data on the new hard drive. THe DLink site suggested that I try everything out before I need it to make sure it all works as planned. I would have no idea how to try out the System Repair Disc and restore the System Image without having a blank hard drive or jeopardizing the data on my current drive.

I just installed a new hard drive after my previous one failed to start up. I have a backup image stored on an external WD Passport. The install went well. I turn on my tower with the Windows 7 recovery disc in, start up System Image Restore and plug in my Passport. The system restore recognizes my Passport and when I go through the wizard to reformat and partition the disk to match the layout of the recovery image, I get an error message saying "The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. *hyperlink* Details."Details states, "No disck that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. Try the following: 1) A probable system disk may have been excluded by mistake. a. Review the list of disks that you have excluded from the recovery for a likely disk. b. Type LIST DISK command in the DISKPART command interpreter. The probable system disk is usually the first disk listed. c. If possible,, remove the disk from the exclusion list and then retry the recovery.Tried that, my disk is not listed as an exclusion.2) A USB disk may have been assigned as a system disk. a. Detach all USB disks from the computer. b. Reboot into Windows Recovery Environment then reattach USB disks and retry the recovery.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Win 7 to a SataIII drive/port with the intention of doing a bootable clone to a SataII drive/port. However on completion of the first install I realised that my cloning software was not capable of cloning the SRP (system reserved partition)Plan B ? Installed a second copy of Win 7 to the SataII drive/port on a single partition (no SRP) with the intention of cloning over the SataIII drive to eliminate the SRPWas hesitant to do this as the clone software wipes the SataIII drive so as a tester I cloned the SataII drive with the single partition to a spare SataII drive and it copied ok. Unfortunately when I disconnected the SataIII and SataII source drive the recently cloned spare SataII drive would not boot. The boot manager prompts the user to accept either of the two installed versions of Win 7 and whichever you nominate the spare SataII drive fails to boot. I installed the Win 7 repair disc to fix the start up but it displayed a message that it was unable to fix it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had been thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 for sometime, and after my Raid array failed I wasn't forced to but it happened to be perfect timing.
Instead of waiting till my replacement drive arrived, I installed Windows 7 on a different drive temporarily.
After I received my new drive, I setup my array again and installed Windows 7 once again without a hitch. After installing all of my programs, games, etc. I started to notice both the User folder and Documents & Settings folders were both identical and were being updated simultaneously.
I know I didn't properly remove the old installation, but I've never seen Windows do this before. Very Odd. I've formatted the other drive and everything is good now, but I thought it was odd and wondered if it was a bug or a known issue.
I have 2x160gb intel SSD disks running as RAID0. Recently my motherboard had failed and I replaced it with new one (different model). Couldn't access OS because apparently some RAID data is kept on the motherboard and that was gone, so I decided to use a backup. Booted from windows 7 installation disk and selected backup,
I click on 'repair', get to the 'select a system image backup'. Select 'use the latest available system image (recommended). Click 'next' I get the message 'all disk to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image'. Click Yes. But then got an error saying:
"The system image restore failed. The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)"
Disk is completely empty with only 1 partition (deleted all partitions and reformatted and then created one). Before motherboard problem I had several partitions, but I imagine that restore would recreate them. Why do I get 'disk to small error' when I am restoring on the same disk? RAID configuration problem? Could stripe size be an issue here?

Using preinstalled Win 7 Home Premium 64bit on an HP 6813w Pavilion. The original hard drive, a Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 1Tb crashed.1) System Recovery discs was made along with a System Recovery with System Image disc.2) A more current System Image was made on an external hard drive. The Hitachi was replaced with the same model. Checked bios to make sure it was installed correctly.Under System Recovery, Image Restore, Select a System Image Backup there is nothing in the table to choose from as far as a source (disc drive or external drive).A) System Recovery (3 discs) has the HP preinstall file folder on the 3rd disc but is not read by the System Recovery program.B) Under System Restore, Image Restore, Advanced, it asks for a network or driver to be installed. That opens up the directory of C: which is the external hard drive. Under WindowsImageBackup the computer name is identified followed by three entries:[CODE]It seems to me the Recovery and System Restore discs are not functional. Am not a technical person but I have taken this as far as I know how at this point.Printed out all the instructions from HP and Microsoft to follow step by step but the failed discs will not allow me to move forward.

I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files. Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.
