Restore Windows 7 Image To Drive With XP
Mar 18, 2012
I had a hard drive fail, and I want to recover my recent backup/image from that failed drive, an image which was created with the Win 7 backup tool found in Control Panel. It's on an external hard drive. I of course want to recover it to a drive known to be good, such as the one that's in my computer now.If I have XP on said drive, can I make a partition and restore the 7 image to that new partition? Or would I not be able/allowed to have two Windows OS-es on the same drive, even on different partitions? It's XP Home and 7 Home Premium x64.

I have a compac (HP) laptop (CQ61-41us notebook), running WIN7 home premium, 64 bit. Aside from the normal file backup via the western digital software, I have several windows 7 generated iso images of my laptop stored on my external WD drive. Using windows repair disk, my computer does not recognize the external drive to access the disk images. It just asks to insert the last disk into optical drive. My images are on a folder on my external drive. There is no option to navigate to it! This is the first time I've needed to restore an image, and I can't access them! This should be an easy operation that could be started in a few minutes. I have been screwing around with this for more than 24 hours!

I had made a full image of 3 drives using Win 7 backup tool. However, since then, I have removed 2 of the disks but I want to restore just one of the drives where the OS was installed (these are physical HDD= 3). Windows restore CD does not let me restore just one drive since the image is for all 3.Is there any way that I can force windows 7 to restore just one of the drives from the the full image with 3 drives? Unfortunately, the drives that I removed already have new data in another PC and pretty big (2T each). I don't to buy 2 drives just to install the OS image.

My c: is 128 GB and darn near full. I have Win7 and most used programs on it. My b: (179 GB of 500) has my libraries and less used programs. I have a single windows image backup of both B & C on an external drive.
For example if I purchase a 500 GB hard drive can I restore that image to the new drive? Will it partition the C from the B on the new drive or just show it as seperate folders?
Does the new drive have to be greater than the sum of the allocated/unallocated space on both drives even though the image is less than 500GB?

I have just installed a 3TB external drive for backup purposes and was testing the image restore feature. If I use the external drive on the usb 3.0 port when entering F8/System Repair/Repair from image, the drive is not detected at all, when I plug it into the 2.0 port it is detected. Within windows itself the drive operates fine on the 3.0 hub. I am guessing its some kind of USB 3.0 driver issue within system repair but wondered if there is a work around. Not sure I want to sit and wait for a restore over 2.0 when it could be using 3.0!

All discussion will pertain to Windows 7 Backup w/ NTFS disks w/ample space. Period. It shouldn't matter if the disks are simple or dynamic. The simple situation is this: I have one simple NTFS boot disk that failed months after system image backups to my other internal HDD. So then I replace this boot disk w/ a new one. So Am I able to restore the system image from the HDD onto to the new boot disk?

I need a little help figuring this out. I made a backup image a while back on my network. Now that I want to re-image, I reboot as requested, wait for it to load, and Windows says it can't find my backup, "if it is on a network, close this window , type the network location."Putting in the network location does nothing, I'm just returned to the screen where it would list the backup image if it had found it, but there's nothing there.Thinking perhaps my NAS was the problem I copied the image onto a portable hard drive, but after rebooting into the restore program, Windows 7 doesn't find the USB drive.

Been awhile since I've been around here. I'm stuck with a new problem. My desktop's OS hard drive crashed/is crashing. After testing several pieces of hardware and reseating numerous items, I got lucky and was able to boot into safe mode, once. My event viewer is full of disk errors. Pages and pages of disk errors. *Side note: Sure would've been nice if Windows would have said something */End Side note* So I have a Windows System Image and Windows Backup on a secondary drive that appears healthy. But I'm just curious what I'm looking at when my new hard drive gets here.Has anyone ever used the Windows 7 Image Backup/Restore utility? Can you use the image on a different hard drive or just when repairing the original? Will my programs be saved or just data? Just curious questions. All of my Google searches are bringing up reviews about the utility from the Win 7 RC days so I'm not real sure what I'm getting myself into here.

I created an image backup with Windows 7. It created a large VHD file and appeared tocomplete correctly. I copied the image to my thumb drive and tried to do a restore. I can find the thumb drive and browse it and all the files are there but if I try to do a restore it doesn't find the restore image. I also tried putting it on a network drive - it can'tfind it there even though I point it to the share it is in.I've tried using a restore CD, as well as installing Windows and using the recovery in control panel. The folder structure is asfollowsWindowsImageBackupcomputernameunder that folder are three foldersbackup 2012-07-15 232717CatalogSPPMetadataCachemetadataidIt seems odd there is no obvious way to just say this is the VHD - right here in this folder - use it and restore.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit The windows system image backed up on my external hard drive (2TB WD USB3) is not showing while restoring the PC from an image.
The only option available is my hard drive partition on which i also had saved a system image. Though windows recommends External hard drive for backing up image when backing up the system.

I have got a license for Acronis True Image Home 2010. To my surprise, I don't like it unlike many other folks who swear on this software.Acronis creates a backup image in .tib or .zip format whereas Windows 7 Backup and Restore creates system image in an encrypted folder (with all files and folders NOT formatted). In either case, backup image becomes ready for "restore". So why keep Acronis? Well, Acronis can backup custom files and folders unlike Windows 7 default program (and, Windows 7 does it, too), however, Acronis does "Create full path (includes drive letter)" which I simply dislike. Fbackup4 (free license), on the other hand, does not do it but does the job the way I want, i.e., creates files and folders the way they are organized (without including drive letter, and without zipping or making some unusual file format). So for data backup, Fbackup4 is better, IMO. I remember, WinXP creates crazy backup file format like Acronis does.Paragon Migrate OS to SSD SE (I have license for this, too) is special in the sense that it can copy the entire OS drive/partition to a blank drive. Very good for drive upgrade.

We are a small office, 5 or 6 computers. Only 3 are every day computers, other 3 are "server", admin and extra computer. The three in use every day are new win7pro x64 machines. Our server is xp pro (32bit) with a shared drive as our "server" drive. We access this for all our job related materials, etc. There is no network setup, just shared folders among our workgroup. we just got the new win7pro machines setup and are using Windows Backup function to create system images to the "server" computer in a shared folder. We've got the images created on 2 computers, and can see the .vhd files and associated folder structure. When testing to see if we could restore from these images, we got the error "Cannot locate backup sets on machine, etc."I moved the backup folder to the root of the drive, and made sure it was WindowsImageBackup or whatever the default is, but still could not find it.

I am running windows 7 home premium, upgraded from Vista. This is a Dell inspiron 1525. I have a recovery partition on the hard drive (E). When I startup, choose F8, choose "repair my computer" I have no option to restore from the recovery partition. There is no "dell data safe / recovery" option. I have heard this is due to my upgrading to win7. Two questions: Am I right in believing that the problem was caused from the upgrade? (even though the recovery partition was untouched).....2nd Question: if I first format the C: drive will it cure the problem?

I get a failure notice when I try to restore from the image saying that I don't have a valid drive to restore to. I am imaging from a 500 Gig and trying to restroe to a 750 Gig that I am putting into to replace the 500.
Ghost 14 is not compatible with Windows 7.
Just a little follow-up info:
I am using the same computer only trying to upgrade the HD.
I am using Windows 7 Pro RTM (Legitly).
I don't want to go through having to rebuild everything from scratch again.
I am putting the 500 in my camera monitoring system.
I have taken the following 3 steps so far: 1) I've created identical partitions on the 750 to match the 500 2) I've deleted all partitions 3) I have ghosted the Windows 7 partitions to these partitions (setup old Vista Drive and imaged the Windows 7 partitions).
No luck so far.
I am getting a failure notice while trying to restore to a new HD (going from a 500 to a 750).
The message tells me that I don't have a valid HD to restore to.
The image is on a 1.5 TB and the primary disk is the 750.
Any ideas?

At the moment I have Win7 installed on my C drive which is a 1.5TB Samsung, it has two partitions 200GB for the OS and programs and the rest for storage.I bought a Momentus XT to replace the OS C: partition. I have tried a few programs to back-up (image) the C drive to a 3rd drive, unplug my C drive then reboot with the Win7 installation disc and run startup repair. Now at this point I get error's saying I can't run the image restore in this environment then it tells me to reboot from the disc, then basically do what I just did. So I'm stuck in a loop regarding the image restore. Secondly I tried to use Acronis disk director suite to clone the C drive to the new XT drive, this completes successfully. I Unplug my C drive, leaving just the XT in, I boot up, I get a boot error and am told to run startup repair via the installation disc which I do, after doing so it boots past the windows sign, then Acronis does some final checks as it's about to show the login screen, I get blue screened for a split second then the computer reboots. I ran startup repair again, the startup repair is stuck on "attempting repairs" for 30+ mins. So my questions are, where am I going wrong with the image restoration. I've tried saving the image backup to the new drive and to a spare drive. It refuses to restore from both these locations. The error message tells me to do what I did in the first place, and when I do it again it's the same result. With directly cloning the drive,I have obvious boot problems, I can only assume this is to do with the OS thinking it's booting from drive C, what I'm confused about is, wouldn't it be labelled as drive C if the 1.5TB drive is unplugged?

I recently got a new hard drive (Seagate Mometus XT 500GB) to replace the old one (320GB) i had for my laptop. I had created an image backup using Windows 7. I restored the image to my new hard drive using my recovery CD to the new hard drive and everything was working just fine. Windows loaded up quicker and it was faster than before. Now when i open up My Computer and go to properties of the new hard drive, the capacity comes up as 287, which is my old one. It seems Windows does not detect the new hard drive.

Using windows explorer, I can view the image folder. I have not renamed or moved the folder. I receive the message "network share cannot be found. code 0x800704cf"
how to connect to the network image.

I am Last night when I get home go to start computer and there is a error about missing dll file, then aas I click the error more missing file errors keep coming up, gets progressively worse until PC does not start windows. Ok, that's cool, I have backup and disk image on another drive in computer, no problem right, WRONG!!!
So pop in the windows 7 disk, go to restore disk image, error!!! Got a few errors while trying once I got one when I checked of not to include one of the disk, the one I keep getting is that there is not enough space on drive for restore. Now the disk the image is on is 150 GB, the disk trying to put it on is 500 GB, so why the problem???
So keep searching on my laptop and find a suggestion to do diskpart-clean. Go through every suggestion I found to use diskpart such as clean. Still not working. I install Windows 7 on the drive which works, install backup files and is there. But I want the image to restore. So in the new install I cant get it to do a image restore, so I try from Windows 7 CD again, Fail.

So I booted into my other hard drives win 7 pro installation. Then I saved that system image onto my hard drive where the new windows 7 pro install is. After booting into the new windows install, then rebooting and going through the wizard and using the backed up image from the old windows 7 pro install it appears as if nothing is installed, no programs, drivers, themes, visuals etc. It's as if I didn't do anything at all.

Ensure disks are online, and disk drivers are installed to access the disk(s). 'diskpart.exe' tool with list disks command can be used to see the list of available fixed disks on the system.

for backups of my main OS (in my signature) I have acronis TIH create a single image full backup daily to a different drive. Weekly a single image backup is created and saved on a different drive. Because my SSDs are in RAID0, every few weeks I make a system image backup using Acronis (outside of the daily and weekly backups), clean/all the SSDs to put everything back to 0 on the drives, then restore my installation. It makes a significant performance increase for sure. This last go around a week ago, I did the usual but could not restore no matter what I did. I bought the new version of acronis, the plus pack, unplugged all the other drives, etc etc etc that acronis told me to do to try to fix the error I was getting restoring any backups. Finally what I did was take an old backup, transfer it over the network to a different computer, bought acronis TIH again (ridiculous) and was able to clone it to a drive, plug the drive back into my main rig, boot acronis from a USB drive and clone that installation to the SSD raid setup. The only problem was, the backup I was able to use was from 7-10. I'm now trying to convert the images which would not restore to VHD to boot from the bootmgr screen of the currently restored (7-10) installation.Every tutorial I see only deals with creating a new .vhd to install windows to and boot.
