Registry Change Before Changing Motherboard?

Jun 23, 2011

On a Win XP machine you could delete the registry keys under HKLMEnum as the last step before removing the MB and when the new MB was installed the Plug & Play would install the your hardware drivers and properly configure the new MB.Is there a similar process that will work with Win 7? There is no HKLMEnum key in Win 7 registry. There is a HKLMSystemControl Set 001Enum.

Changing Motherboard Without Reinstalling Windows 7?

Jan 19, 2012

I have an Intel Motherboard which I am changing to a Gigabyte one.If I were to do this myself, I would take proper steps to insure that Windows will boot with the new hardware. I would update my Intel Sata controller driver to a Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller. Then, SHUTDOWN the computer (not restart), then install the new Motherboard and all should be fine. Windows should install the new drivers. The problem is, my computer is being serviced for free at the place I purchased it from. So I don't have access or communication with the lab. I'm sure they are professionals but I want to be sure they don't mess up my C drive or drivers. So I have a few choices:

1. Update the controller driver to Standard, turn off the computer and send it to the lab (maybe with a note, asking that they install the motherboard BEFORE they turn the computer on).

2. Trust them that they know what they are doing and hope they will first turn the computer on, uninstall the Intel controller driver, and then install the new motherboard.

Windows 7 Restarts Automatically After Changing Motherboard

Jun 2, 2012

I recently got a new motherboard and installed it into my desktop. I had win7 on my HD and thought it would be a good idea for a fresh install. Well upon start up it always automatically restarts at the "Windows is starting" screen with the logo. I have tried starting in safe mode, I have tried repairing and installing with the win7 CD and a bootable win7 usb, I have tried disabling the "Automatic restart on system failure" option. Nothing is working, it just restarts and reboots just to do it again.

Change Motherboard - Will Win 7 Works ?

Dec 1, 2009

I have a question about Windows re-activation.

If I change a motherboard/cpu in an Dell PC, will I still be able to use Windows 7 on that computer? I know that I can get the drivers loaded ok in safe mode, but will I need to re-activate Windows 7 to get it working again?

I read something a long time ago about hardware changes and activation, but I don't know if this will happen in this case. No big deal if I just need to ring up, but I wanted to check it wouldn't just break.

Windows 7 Will Not Start Or Reinstall After Motherboard Change

Sep 11, 2011

My motherboard died on me, and so I had to change it together with the processor and RAM as there were no socket 775 motherboards available locally. However, Win 7 blue screens every time on start up, but very briefly, so I can't see the error message.

Win 7 repair then kicks in, but finds nothing wrong, so it goes round and round like that ad infinitum.

All the repair methods I have found require that you work within windows, which is patently stupid if you want to repair because you can't get windows to work - it's a bit like trying to open a box with a tool that's inside it!

I tried a new install, which has backed up my old Windows as Windows.old, and it goes though all the paces, but then refuses to accept the activation code.

I am now stuck with a non functioning PC, and am scared to add anything in the future in case of this type of thing.

Stop Windows 7 From Changing Screensaver When Change Theme?

Apr 5, 2012

Each time I decide to change the theme on my Dell Inspiron laptop Windows 7 automatically turns sounds back on and changes the screen saver. It's so annoying and unnecessary. How can I prevent it from doing this when all I want to do is vary the themes? Or do I have to go through the same routine each time - that of switching off the sounds and restoring my screensaver?

Changing Themes Via The Ones Pre Installed And It Might Change My Desktop Wallpaper?

Jan 13, 2013

So in the last month i noticed some of my folders i keep on the desktop change form the newer slicker icon of a folder back to the typical windows yellow folder. Then more and more until all of my folders where like that. Then all of sudden some sounds started to go from a normal contemporary notification sound to a dull sound from XP or older. Then about a week ago the "bar" if you will changed from a typical Win7 style back to a XP one where its dull. And its like that everywhere.

I have tried icon programs at first to fix the folder issue and unless i wanna do it one buy one its sucks and i just want them back to a normal win7 folder nothing fancy.I have tried changing themes via the ones pre installed and it might change my desktop wallpaper it never changes the "bars"Also tried other non microsoft theme programs with the same results.

ALSO i scanned my pc with Malwarebyes, CCleaner, WinASO, AVG and cleaned all up and so on rebooted all the same.Thought i may have installed too many apps or at least big apps (photo/video editing) and i uninstalled a few with no difference. So then i decided to check out my ram. So i make a bootable disc of a memory scanner. Ended up getting into the millions of errors with the ram i had and i stopped it before it was done with the intentions on getting ram and not waiting until scan was done to tell me i had 500 trillion errors lol.
Bought new ram installed it started her up and BAM .... same thing.I have not scanned this ram as my wife uses it while im at work and when im home i do alota 2nd job stuff on it so i dont like having it offline long.

Registry After Windows Update And Registry Optimization Tool

Jun 16, 2012

While windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.

Font Size Changing Whenever Changing Settings In Personalization?

Jul 8, 2012

This all started whenever I wanted to change my text size different by changing my DPI settings. What I did was right click, go to screen resolution, and clicked on "Make text and other items larger or smaller". From this I changed it to 100% from 125%. I noticed it had changed my font size to the 100%. It then made everything SUPER small when I changed my theme settings.Whenever I right click and go into personalization settings, I do the usual customizing to my likings. Since I want to save the theme, I do so by naming it, blah. Now I want to use the blah theme by click on it, and I do so. Everything is fine and dandy until I right click my desktop to refresh(out of habit). This is the before and after of the font sizes.

Before
After

My workaround was to set a custom DPI setting, log off like it prompts me to, then changing it back to 100%, again prompting to do so. It is so annoying to do so.

Can't Get Into Registry Editor?

Nov 18, 2011

I have a 60GB SSD that I have my operating system on and I have a 1TB regular Hard Drive that I wanted to have all my basic programs on. Once the operating system/drivers/etc were installed on the SSD drive I changed the registry so that the default filed installation location was the 1TB drive instead (because some files/programs don't ask what location you'd like to install them to). Afterwards I restarted the computer after installing a program. Now tons of my system 32 system files/programs wont open even though they're there. I get an error message saying "Windows could not find 'C:Windowssystem32egedt32.exe' Please make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again."

This is the second time it has done this. The first time I had installed a few more programs before restarted so I thought maybe somehow I got a virus that disabled some of my registry permissions. But all this stuff I can't open IS still there, but because I changed this the ProgramDefDir registry now it can't find this stuff. After this first time when I thought it was a virus I just went ahead and reformatted and reinstalled windows, but I noticed as soon as I restarted after changing the registry the way I wanted it before, the same problem occured. So, 2 questions come from this: first, how can I fix this? i.e. changed the registry back WITHOUT the default regedit program as it wont let me use it.. second: How can I do what I want efficiently without creating this problem? i.e. OS on SSD and every other program, music, and such on the 1TB drive?

Messed With The Registry?

Jun 6, 2011

About a week ago I tried to install Cyberlink Power DVD 10.I kept getting error message 1625,this installation not allowed due to system policy. I've gotten conflicting solutions and still no luck. As of today I tried messing with the registry and local policies etc...long story short, I cannot get past my "Starting Windows" window. It powers down, then powers back up and gives me the options of 'start windows normally' or 'repairs'. It will not start normally nor can it repair the problem. Have I done something heinous and can it be reversed? Is there a way to get it into safe mode, back to my desktop so I can restore the backed up registry.

FilesNotToBackup Registry Key?

Sep 16, 2012

I've searched a bit here and there on the net regarding excluding certain folders and its contents from Windows Backup, since I would like to use Windows Backup to make a system backup without any user files, and use a seperate utility for backing up the user files. So I found out about this "FilesNotToBackup" string in the registry, and according to what I read, I can put full paths in there to exclude with the wildcard *.* /s. Which I did.But I found out it's not working, so it still includes the folders I added to that registry key to the system backup image. I noticed the system image in the "WindowsImageBackup" folder is the same size as the space used on my OS disk.
