I had power outage reboot backgroud went back to default and so did the quick launch menu also some of my games act like i never played them before and have to re setup resolution and settings. Did some widows file get corrupt why did this happen?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI made the huge mistake of booting my custom built machine during a storm and as luck would have it, the only time that the power was lost (for about 2 seconds) occurred at that time. Now my machine will not boot. Startup repair comes up and tells me that it could not find the problem and I must shut down. I have tried restoring, mem tests, hard drive tests, reseting my mobo to failsafe settings, booting from the windows 7 recovery disk, booting off of the original windows 7 install disk, forcefully kicking it and crying. Nothing has worked, however. No matter what method I use, even when successfully completed, I am still faced with the startup repair error. I built the PC myself, so I'm not a complete fool when it comes to computers.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis HP computer is running Windows 7 - 64 Professional, version 6.1, build 7601 Service Pack 1. The last time I had a normal start up was last Saturday after turning off all the computers and unplugging due to thunderstorm activity in the area. Yesterday morning, Sunday, we had 4-5 momentary power outages where the electricity pretty much flickered a few times, then stayed on. This computer did start up, but the start up process took approx 20 minutes.
I restored the computer to 3 days prior with no noticeable difference, ran defrag with no noticeable difference, and ran chkdsk, which did make a difference. The 1st start after the chkdsk was a normal quick start, then subsequent starts take approx 3-4 minutes, so it has slowed down again, but not near as bad as the original problem. The start up goes as follows:
1.) The normal Blue HP start up screen for approx 20 seconds, then,
2.) The windows graphic with the changing colored "windows" on the black background, then,
3.) a completely black screen for approx 2-3 minutes with minimal flashing of the HDD light, then
4.) proceed to Welcome to Windows screen where everything loads and the HDD light is pretty much steady. Within 30-40 seconds of getting to this point the normal desktop is up, icons are loaded, and computer is ready to use.
My step 3 noted above - the black screen, is usually 15-20 seconds max, so it seems whatever the hangup is is occuring during that time. After the start up is complete everything works normally. There isn't any abnormal use of memory or CPU usage.
Aside from the surge itself, what other negative effects could arise from experiencing an outage while multiple programs are open and running? For example, if I lost power while regedit was open, could it change or possibly cause damage the registry itself? The machine in question is currently running Win 7 SP1 64-bit.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been having a serious issue with my PC. The PC will boot up without incident, but if I try to access explorer or the OS, it will slow to a crawl and eventually freeze. I have encountered this with firefox, the start menu, and when trying to access the task manager. The problem is consistent, occuring everytime I start the machine. Usually within the first few minutes of a boot-up, Windows has frozen and I must force a hard reset.
The only thing I can think of which may be the cause is a power outage which occured in the night. When I woke up, the PC was off and the problem began as soon as I booted up. The PC was plugged into a power strip which was not tripped by the outage.
I can boot up in Safe Mode, which delays the onset of the crash, but doesn't stop it. I have tried using system restore by accessing the menu during start-up (F8) but the system restore always fails at the very end. Looking at the inside of the PC, there doesn't seem to be any visible damage (that I can detect) and at no points does anything seem to be giving off any excess heat.
When I press CTRL+ALT+DEL in an attempt to access the task manager, the screen goes black and the cursor turns to a wheel. After several minutes, the wheel will stop and a prompt will appear stating "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."
Computer frozen on restore systems after power outage. I cannot use disc 2 reboot - all keyboard actions frozen. All I want to know is - would I have lost what's on my hard drive and how to be able 2 get it running again.

When I turned it on, the screen resolution was off, so I managed to fix it by hardware (the auto button on my monitor) since software-based fixing didn't work (which has managed to solve this problem in the past, at least I think it was the same problem). Anyway, after I did this, the icons were strange; bigger than usual, not e.g. 128x128 but rather 140x128 (that isn't the exact size but they were higher than they were wide). This is quite annoying. The circular icons have become ovals and the square icons have become rectangular. By the way, the same thing has, I think, happened to the taskbar as well. It's harder to tell with things other than icons, but it's visible. So basically, everything is slightly higher than wider than it should be, not only the icons.

Over the past 2 years my PC has been afflicted with random power off/power on/reboot events.It will go for months without these and then have multiples of the events in a day. (I had 8 of them 3 days ago.)I assume I have a hardware problem, but nothing has been found and I'm grasping at straws.The time between power off and power on is several seconds.I had assumed this rules out a software cause, but maybe I'm wrong. I know Windows can schedule a power off, but can it tell BIOS (or something) to power back on in a few seconds?I know blaming the power supply is a much more simple explanation, but then I'm left with explaining the intermittent nature of the failure.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi've had Windows 7 now since release, i've had nearly no problems at all.just sometimes my computer turns itself off without any notice.when i then reboot it again, nothing happens, the computer stays on, but i still have to reboot by pushing the power button... View 6 Replies View RelatedFollowing power failure, my HP Pavilian tried rebooting, but was interrupted due to multiple power failures. On next full reboot, it went to BSOD when I logged into my Windows profile. On subsequent reboot, Windows offered to do a system restore. I restored it to a previous date. After that restore, the computer would allow me to open my profile, but went to BSOD when I tried to open Outlook. I am now operating in "safe mode with networking" but perepherals (e.g., scanner) and some applications (e.g., Outlook) do not work. Files from SF Diagnostic are attached.

Ok, so I left my PC on last night while it was installing some Windows 7 (x64) updates, via Windows Update. I came back to it this morning at it looks like it had rebooted.I have the PC set for "install updates automatically" (the default setting) I believe this will reboot the PC at around 3am.1) Is there a way to check that the PC rebooted via Windows Update, as opposed to a power bump/outage?2) Would a power bump during Windows Update corrupt Windows 7 somehow? I checked Windows Update and it looks like there are no FAILED updates.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I power on my PC, or reboot, my Internet connection does not work for a few mins. Windows loads with out errors and shows the little blue circle on my Network Icon. Then the icon goes to a red x for a few mins, then goes to a Yellow triangle thing and then it goes away. After that the Internet works fine. Also, about every other day I get packet loss and random disconnects.
This is my network setup.
1. Windows 7 professional 64bit PC and an Acer Windows Vista 64bit home premium Laptop.
2. ASUS P5QL PRO LGA 775 motherboard with most current Network driver from Asus website.
3. D-Link DIR-655 Draft 2 Xtreme N Gigabit Wireless Router running from my cable modem to my PC and spitting wireless to my house. The wireless never seems to have a problem. I have not updated the firmware because of brick fears.
4. I have a Motorola SURFboard® Cable Modem SB5100. I own it and it's from about 2004. Not sure if that matters.
Troubleshooting I've done.
1. Unplugged the cable modem.
2. Updated the mobo LAN driver from ASUS website.
3. Rebooted Wireless router.
4. Plugged and unplugged all network jacks to make sure they are in tight.
5. Checked that cable is tightly screwed into cable jack in wall and in back of cable modem.
6. When the internet connection drops or shows packet loss I do the Ipconfig/release and Ipconfig/renew.
It's almost like after every reboot Windows 7 looses my network info and has to re-detect it all over again. It is really odd.
I am having problems with my internet connection. I am running a pc behind a router with DHCP enabled. Often when I restart the computer the computers internal IP is also set as the default gateway.
My router is 192.168.1.1 My computer gets automatically IP 192.168.1.4 and then gets Default gateway of 192.168.1.4
Then I have to manually set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 for it to work. But next time I use the computer the gateway has changed again and I have to change back.
What to do? I have the latest network drivers for my nvidia mobo and running windows 7. The name of the network I am connected to also changes a lot.

What causes this to happen? Is it a power surge? I can unplug and plug the computer back in and have no problem booting. If I have a power failure, no Boot. Wireless adapter is Edimax EW-7128g, newest drivers for Windows 7 64bit First set up a WEP profile the usual manner by connecting using the bottom-right wireless networking widget; "Save this connection", yes. Works right off the bat, first time Needed to switch to WPA on router for better security. Same router. Done. Entered new credentials using the same wireless networking widget. Works fine first time, right off the bat. Computer enters sleep mode overnight. Upon a wake (or restart, or cold boot) - Windows 7 reverts back to the old WEP profile. I go into "Manage Wireless Networks" I select the profile from the list, hit DELETE. Removes it from the list. ADD new profile, supply proper WPA credentials, "Save this connection". Works fine. Manage wireless networks displays proper information (WPA security) Restart, or reboot, or logoff. BOOM. Back to using the old WEP profile!Tried this using Administrator account and user account. Same behavior. Workaround is to change the security type credentials or delete & create a new profile every time windows is rebooted/logoff/restart. I cannot for the life of me figure this out. I am not using the vendor's connection utility. Windows cannot remember the new connection profile and despite me deleting the old one ... continues to revert back to it.

All parts are new except: SSD, HDD, and PSU.
PC would reboot itself randomly and the event viewer says kernel-power event 41 task 63. My biggest hunch is the PSU because there was one time just after I built the PC, it would not turn on when power button was pressed. MOBO status light was lit. Tried shorting out the actual power pins on the MOBO but still did not turn it on. It would also sometimes turn on then off then on again by itself.
Also whenever I'm in CMOS setup, the various voltages seem to be unstable, it would go up and down by +/- .002 or something like that.
Because of those two points plus the PSU is already used and old (was prev used in a server which ran 24/7) I reckon it's the PSU. But before I go buying a new PSU, I thought I'd get your opinions.
So every time I reboot. I have to change my gateway IP in my Network settings.
everything saves but not my gateway IP. And my router does have the latest full version on firewall. I didn't want to upload a beta.
My old router worked fine with this but not my new one. I don't want to use auto-detect Internet connection, even do that works. I want to type in manually but everything saves but not the gateway. I got DCHP on.
i have laptop that has some propriatory software for the power settings, specifically its the toshiba evo utility. there is a hard button for it above my keyboard. my usual policy is to run the eco when i'm on batteries and run a windows plan when plugged in. i want to run the high performance when i plug in, but everytime i press the eco button to come out of eco mode it defaults to blummin balanced.save for deleting the other plans, is there a way round this? can i set the default plan to always be high power when switching back and forth to my proprietry tosh eco mode plan?

Access denied, file in use, You don't have permission. Something thinks these files are in use and they are not. If you reboot the computer they all clear but it comes back on different files. It is not a permission problem.
