Screen Has Slightly Warped Since Short Power Outage?
Apr 11, 2012
Yesterday, there was a short power outage which caused my computer to force shut down. When I turned it on, the screen resolution was off, so I managed to fix it by hardware (the auto button on my monitor) since software-based fixing didn't work (which has managed to solve this problem in the past, at least I think it was the same problem). Anyway, after I did this, the icons were strange; bigger than usual, not e.g. 128x128 but rather 140x128 (that isn't the exact size but they were higher than they were wide). This is quite annoying. The circular icons have become ovals and the square icons have become rectangular. By the way, the same thing has, I think, happened to the taskbar as well. It's harder to tell with things other than icons, but it's visible. So basically, everything is slightly higher than wider than it should be, not only the icons.

There was a quick power outage and the computer was forced off. I rebooted and now after the windows logo there is a gray screen that remains a very long period of time before the desktop appears. I am able to move the mouse but that is the only functionality I have.

I made the huge mistake of booting my custom built machine during a storm and as luck would have it, the only time that the power was lost (for about 2 seconds) occurred at that time. Now my machine will not boot. Startup repair comes up and tells me that it could not find the problem and I must shut down. I have tried restoring, mem tests, hard drive tests, reseting my mobo to failsafe settings, booting from the windows 7 recovery disk, booting off of the original windows 7 install disk, forcefully kicking it and crying. Nothing has worked, however. No matter what method I use, even when successfully completed, I am still faced with the startup repair error. I built the PC myself, so I'm not a complete fool when it comes to computers.

I am hooked up to a UPS, but after that runs out and I am away, I sometimes need to remotely logon - in which case I need the computer on. If I need to change something in the BIOS, please give specifics of how to do this as I have looked in there and found nothing related to this.

This HP computer is running Windows 7 - 64 Professional, version 6.1, build 7601 Service Pack 1. The last time I had a normal start up was last Saturday after turning off all the computers and unplugging due to thunderstorm activity in the area. Yesterday morning, Sunday, we had 4-5 momentary power outages where the electricity pretty much flickered a few times, then stayed on. This computer did start up, but the start up process took approx 20 minutes.
I restored the computer to 3 days prior with no noticeable difference, ran defrag with no noticeable difference, and ran chkdsk, which did make a difference. The 1st start after the chkdsk was a normal quick start, then subsequent starts take approx 3-4 minutes, so it has slowed down again, but not near as bad as the original problem. The start up goes as follows:
1.) The normal Blue HP start up screen for approx 20 seconds, then,
2.) The windows graphic with the changing colored "windows" on the black background, then,
3.) a completely black screen for approx 2-3 minutes with minimal flashing of the HDD light, then
4.) proceed to Welcome to Windows screen where everything loads and the HDD light is pretty much steady. Within 30-40 seconds of getting to this point the normal desktop is up, icons are loaded, and computer is ready to use.
My step 3 noted above - the black screen, is usually 15-20 seconds max, so it seems whatever the hangup is is occuring during that time. After the start up is complete everything works normally. There isn't any abnormal use of memory or CPU usage.

Aside from the surge itself, what other negative effects could arise from experiencing an outage while multiple programs are open and running? For example, if I lost power while regedit was open, could it change or possibly cause damage the registry itself? The machine in question is currently running Win 7 SP1 64-bit.

I have been having a serious issue with my PC. The PC will boot up without incident, but if I try to access explorer or the OS, it will slow to a crawl and eventually freeze. I have encountered this with firefox, the start menu, and when trying to access the task manager. The problem is consistent, occuring everytime I start the machine. Usually within the first few minutes of a boot-up, Windows has frozen and I must force a hard reset.
The only thing I can think of which may be the cause is a power outage which occured in the night. When I woke up, the PC was off and the problem began as soon as I booted up. The PC was plugged into a power strip which was not tripped by the outage.
I can boot up in Safe Mode, which delays the onset of the crash, but doesn't stop it. I have tried using system restore by accessing the menu during start-up (F8) but the system restore always fails at the very end. Looking at the inside of the PC, there doesn't seem to be any visible damage (that I can detect) and at no points does anything seem to be giving off any excess heat.
When I press CTRL+ALT+DEL in an attempt to access the task manager, the screen goes black and the cursor turns to a wheel. After several minutes, the wheel will stop and a prompt will appear stating "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."

I literally just built this today and was able to enjoy a very fast boot up speed with wim7 64-bit installed on my ssd drive but the power cable of course found a way to get unplugged from the wall and now the it takes an extra 20-30 seconds in order t boot up (at the "windows starting" ) screen. Right after I turned it back on the computer wanted to go into system repair and then it reset the pc to the back up that I had just set,
Is there anything I can do in order to get it too boot up like it was at first?

I have this problem where my screen will turn black or turn off after a short while of playing games. I installed Windows 7 recently and then installed Borderlands and COD4. Both games run fine at lowest settings but after about 15-20 minutes of playing, my screen would just turn off and I'd have to switch the laptop off using the power button to reboot.
I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 problem, graphic card issue, or heat related issue since my notebook fan is not working and i'm using a notebook cooler.

Replaced my VGA cable with and HDMI cable because screen wouldn't leave power save mode due to lack of communication between tower and screen. HDMI solves that. Now I have no internet connection. No signs of life. Cable guy comes over plugs his laptop into the..box thing where the internet comes from... says the internet is working fine must be your computer and he leaves. So now that my screen is working I can trouble shoot - can't find a network adapter. I have no idea what that means, and it is not listed anywhere on my control panel list of drivers and things. Tried to reinstall whatever that is.. which is hard when your just guessing and clicking things. Bottom line is after using the drivers and devices disc and reinstalling everything that said "network" in the title there is still no signs of life. I don't have wireless so the whole adapter thing isn't making sense either.

I can't seem to get smooth playback with any videos and it's driving me insane. I've tried WMP, VLC, MPC-HC, and it makes little difference. It doesn't matter if it's 1080p or low res.Every video plays as if it has a a very low frame rate; basically a subtle lag/stuttering that gives me a headache if I look at it for too long. It's not really noticeable until there's quick movement in the video, I've tried many different output settings in these players, and used several different codec packs.

I recently bought a refurbished HP laptop, a dv7-4183cl. Overall I thought the laptop was great. However it had a problem (it periodically shut down suddenly, as if it had lost power), and I contacted HP. I was quite surprised that this refurbished laptop had a 6-month support contract.
Unfortunately things did not go well with the repair process. I had to send it in three times, and every time they sent it back, something new was broken. Some of these things I figured out and fixed, but others required sending it in again. Plus every time I moved all my files & work back & forth from the 4183cl to an older laptop, it ate up way too much of my time. Eventually I told HP "This is nuts, I'm not sending it in again."
To my astonishment, they just contacted me and offered me a NEW laptop to replace the faulty refurbished one. Wow! Major kudos to HP.
It's a higher-end model (dv7-6199) -- Core i7 instead of i5, 1TB drive instead of 500GB, 8GB RAM instead of 6. So this seems like a fabulous deal.
My question: I've spent way too much time setting up this laptop -- installing software, customizing, etc. I would *really* rather not have to do that again. If they sent me another dv7-4183cl, I would just take an image backup of my laptop and transfer the image to the new one.
Can I do that from the 4183cl to the 6199? I suspect most OS settings will work OK, and Windows 7 will probably figure out and fix any drivers/etc that are different. (For example the 6199 has a Radeon graphics processor vs. ATI in the 4183cl.) The bigger disk is my biggest concern. What happens if I restore a 500GB image to a 1TB drive? Can I extend that partition, or would it be better/possible to create a second 500GB partition?

Just trying out 7MC on an old build before I move to a new HTPC. However, I'm having a few issues.
1. When playing .avi files, the pictures is ever so slightly out of sync. It's barely noticeable but can be quite annoying. I some suggestions about changing settings in the sharks codec options, however this made the .avi unplayable. Anyone got any ideas on this? (I am playing from network storage btw)
2. When playing .mkv files, I have to crank the sound right up on my TV. If I play .avi files, it's completely fine, but .mkv files need the TV putting to the maximum volume. Anyone know why this would be? I have the shark codec packs installed.
3. My PS3 up scales content for my TV screen, however, when playing this same content on 7MC, the quality doesn't look anywhere near as good as the PS3. Anyone know why this is? Are there settings I should be doing to support up scaling (if possible)? I am using Media browser to browse to these files. The colours also don't look that great, is it possible it could be the HDMI cable (even though I thought HDMI quality didn't really matter too much). Could it also be an overscan issue?
4. Media Browser metadata has managed to recover metadata for all but two of my movies. I think the problem is that the proper movie titles have a : in them, and obviously you can't put these in a folder name. Is there anyway around this?
5. Media Browser has only been able to recover metadata for one of my TV shows. All of my other TV shows are structured the same way, but no metadata is recovered.
6. Is there anyway I can apply a view option to all of the screens in Media Broswer. For instance, when trying to decide the season of the program, can I set them all to look like the 'detail' option in the skin, or do I have to do each one manually?
I have my library sorted like Movies > Film (year) > file.avi and TV Shows > Show Name > Season # > S01E03..System spec is Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, 4GB DDR2 Crucial Ballistix 1066MHZ RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card (using HDMI).

I have an issue with my computer, in firefox and other documents the page will randomly scroll slightly, up or down at random intervals. I originally thought that this was caused by an issue with my wireless mouse, but after unplugging my mouse and keyboard from the computer the problem still occurs. What could be causing this? Vipre is showing me as clean of virus and spyware, my video drivers are up to date, what else should I look into?

I have a wifi home network with several devices (laptops, all but one are Windows 7, and a wireless printer) connected through a dsl modem/router (a NexusLink 5631) to each other and to the internet. The laptops can all access shared folders on each others' hard drives, and all can print wirelessly to the printer. Until ... after a few days of happy camping suddenly none of the devices can 'see' each other (can no longer find any other device on the network) and none of the laptops can access the wireless printer. However, internet access is never disrupted; each laptop can still happily surf the net no problem.I am somehow able to rectify the problem by rebooting the dsl modem/router, updating the connection settings on the printer, going back and doing it again, turning round three times and twitching my nose ... after fiddling for a while to no good end everything comes back as it should. And I don't know why.I have contacted my dsl provider (Frontier, in Ohio) who own the modem/router and they say it's nothing to do with them. As long as I have internet access they're not interested.I called them because, interestingly, all this only happened when I switched from my old) cable provider to the dsl provider. When I had the old cable modem/router this issue never occured.

I recently put a 256GB WD SSD in my machine to compliment a smaller, but faster Patriot 6Gb SSD for HD intensive applications.
Unfortunately, since I installed this drive, whenever Windows Backup runs (once a week) computer will freeze for a few seconds (5-7 at most) every 1 or 2 minutes and then keep working normally Nothing else causes these freezes. I can copy large and small files to/from the SSD without any problems. Windows and apps loads very quickly and WD software confirms the drive is OK.
Is there a specific tweak that I need to do for the WD SSD? I thought they used the most conservative controller for this drive that should make this SSD appear as a regular HD to the OS.
I really hate interrupting the backup, but the computer becomes completely unusable while it runs so I'd really like to solve this ASAP.
Just in case model numbers help: The SSD is Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue SSC-D0256SC-2100 Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

I just completed a fresh install of Windows 7 on my Dell XPS 17. For some reason, when the computer is on battery power and is idle, the screen will flicker. Basically if I am on battery power, the moment I stop typing or using the mouse, the screen will flicker after about a second. Then as soon as I resume using the computer, it will flicker again. It will also flash at random other times... Only when on battery power (so far).As I mentioned, I just completed a fresh install of windows 7 after reformatting my drive because of virus issues. I did have some issues with getting drivers installed and still have have that are missing (see attached photo). I have not been able to get these drivers to install. One thought I had is that the screen issue may be a result of improperly installed graphics drivers? Just a thought. System Info:
