Laptop Does Not Detect Any OS After Attempted To Install Windows Xp
Feb 2, 2012
I have a HP pavillion dv-6.I tried installing Windows XP as a secondary OS, but i got a BSOD every time i tried. To be more specific, I get a BSOD once all the setup files are loaded and it says Setup is starting Windows.Ever since then, my laptop no longer boots windows 7 up. It goes to the booting screen and the cursor keeps blinking, but thats it.I think the reason behind this is because xp uses boot.ini, but 7 doesnt, and if the setup files were copied onto the hard-drive, and so was a boot.ini file, it doesnt detect xp or 7.What should i do? And i was also wondering whether I can use a Hiren's disk to added Windows 7 to the boot manager, something like EasyBCD.

make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

2 days ago, I posted about how my BIOS can't even detect SSD anymore. So we concluded that my SSD was dead. After talking to OCZ tech support, the guy told me to change SATA configuration into ACHI and then my BIOS was able to detect SSD again.
So i thought that the problem was solved, but as soon as windows 7 logo shows up, blue screen pops up for like 0.5 sec, and then restarts the computer. I thought that SSD was working fine, BIOS could detect it, and the only problem is with windows 7 so I decided to put windows 7 disc in dvd drive to format and reinstall. But now, my windows 7 can't detect SSD.
What should I do? Why can't my windows 7 disc detect SSD when my BIOS can. And does this mean my SSD is still alive? [URL]
2500K CPU
120GB OCZ SSD
8GB ram
620W PSU
windows 7
I built this computer about 8 months ago.

I have had xp for a long time on a custom computer. Recently I contracted a virus (namely the xp antivirus 2012 system virus). I decided to reformat the hard drive, as I do not have the original xp discs, I bought windows 7 (the full version, not upgrade). While trying to install windows 7 and subsequently reformat the hard drive, the installation program can not detect any hard disk whatsoever.
Another problem is that the virus has corrupted my computer to the point where I cannot even load xp. All my computer is currently good for is watching it try to load.

I had my 8600 working fine but I had to update drivers. So I uninstalled the current driver because I couldnt update. Now My comp wont even recognize the hardware so I am stuck in 800 x 600 and in device manager it says "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and it wont detect my 8600m gt.
Ive downloaded the most current drivers from NVIDIA but it says no compatibel hardware was found and it cannot install. So I went into it manually and went: Update Driver Software -> Browse my comp -> let me pick from a list of device drivers on my comp (now here it only shows the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapeter") ->Have disk -> DISPLAY.DRIVER folder -> then it shows me a huge list of all available dirivers. the problem is there are at least 30 different 8600m gt ones to choose from. I tried a few and it said "The driver slected for this device does not support this version of windows"

I never thought ill be having a problem with installing windows. My old motherboard has died on me and i have replaced it with a new M3A79-T deluxe without changing my already installed windows 7 64. Everything worked fine if a little slow so I decided to frag everything and do a clean install but the installation kept freezing at expanding files. Following other forums i tried dban but it finished in about 2 seconds with errors. which made me think there is a problem with the hd. So then i installed Linux mint so i can use at least something in the mean time, it worked without a problem ruling out a faulty hard drive, I went back to trying to install win7. This time i wasn't even able to proceed from the partition menu as it kept complaining that windows cannot install onto this partition due to 0x80300001 error. I noticed that no partition was marked as the primary partition.I got around this by creating new partitions in the Linux installer then exiting and reformatting the partitions in windows installer (assuming this turns it into NTFS format) I was able to proceed into the installation but again got stuck at the same place with expanding files with error 0x8007045d after a few hours just like before.
Also i never installed drivers in windows installation but when i try to install sata drivers either from mobo cd or mobo website the installer doesn't recognize them, iv tried taking everything out but 1 ram stick, installing new BIOS, reseting CMOS, playing around with partitions, installing from different dvds I'm getting close to throwing this thing out of the window and getting a mac book.

I've had a sudden loss of my hard drive space. I've deleted alot of stuff, like over 20GB, more then just a few times and it just disappeared in less then 2 days. I've read some topics here with the about same problem and tried what they sugested there: to use software like WinDirStat, TreeSize Free and SpaceSniffer. But they just won't show me my whole hard drive. The stop at 50% and show it as if they have scan the whole 100%.

Me and my fiance just finished putting together her first real gaming computer and we wanted to use a Patriot 64g SSD to put win 7 on and use a 1TB Seagate drive for all the rest of the storage. The installation of Win 7 onto the SSD went nice and smooth but when we get into windows it is not detecting the 1TB HD at all. Funny thing is that when I go in to the SSD properties, I can see the Seagate under the sharing options. The only info I have found is how to clone off an existing hard drive with Win 7 on it not how to do a fresh install on 2 new drives.

I assembled a new computer using:
Windows 7 64bit Pro SP1 OEM System Builder Pack
Gigabyte H77M-D3H
1TB SATA HDD WD Caviar Black
Intel Core i3 2125
DDR3 8GB 1600 Intel Viper
SATA LG Blue Ray DVDRW
Clean install of Windows reveals an error not detecting any drives, does not allow partitioning or formatting. BIOS identifies the drives.I've attempted installs of updated drivers from the motherboard's website (as well as the CD that came with the motherboard). WD claims not to have any drivers on their website. Still nothing.

I have just installed Windows 7 onto my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. My laptop now detects a number of wireless networks in the vicinity but not my own. It is not a problem with my router because other laptops can pick up the connection no problem. I have Googled this problem and see a lot on issues with Windows 7 and picking up wireless signals. But I haven't seen any threads which deal specifically with the situation where only one wireless network cannot be detected.

brand new lappy. its the Acer travelmate 5740G fantastic specs - everything is nice and responsive, except that i can't connect my wireless at uni. the tech guy had a look at it and he can't figure it out either. we did everything, including shutting down (eventually deleting) the AV because of its firewall. we set up the network exactly as everyone else does (and it works for everyone else).
the computer keeps suggesting that we check the router (but the router works). i can get net through RJ45 no worries but... i want my wireless to work.

I'm having a problem with my computer after a recent lighting storm. My current problem probably isn't a coincidence since after this storm my integrated rj45 port quit working too. It doesn't even show up in device manager... I've given up on that though. The real issue is when I attempt a shutdown the computer just restarts. It isn't hindering operation, but it would be nice to shutdown the computer when needed without having to switch off the power supply.
I run windows 7 professional and windows xp professional in a multiboot. Both operating systems do the same thing on a shutdown. Even if I hold down the soft switch it will restart no matter the duration of pressing/pressing once quick. BIOS is set to shutdown on soft switch hit. Like I said I had a lighting hit on the house. It made our ISR from TDS stop working on the LAN portion and killed my roomate's LAN card and mine. Pretty much points to the hardware in my opinion, but I figured I'd ask the best of em here.

My plan was to then perform a Minimized Image Recovery: so as to wipe off all my data, but still keep the computer running nicely. The attempt to wipe my data failed.Whenever I try to boot my computer now, I am presented with "Windows Boot Manager" [see attached image]I don't have an OS disk.

I recently did a system restore late at night just so this problem would not happen (around 2am) with no weather and with my luck the power clips on and off. I use windows 7 home edition. When I start my computer it does not go to the login screen but shows a big bar at the bottom saying "windows loading files".I have tried several methods on the repair screen such as:
1) Trying all of the system restores which show it failed
2) Going to the command prompt and typing
diskpart
list volume (to get drive letter)
select volume D: (my drive letter)
detail volume (making sure readonly is off)
Then I typed chkdsk D: /f it went through steps 1-2 fine but at 3 it explains that it "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50" System repair fails even with the disk in the computer, and I have no clue what to do.

My HP laptop HD crashed, am trying to replace it with a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD. I do not have Windows installation disks, only have Windows Recovery Disks. All installation instructions I have found for SSD's is for cloning, which I cannot do since the HD is deadI have installed the SSD, booted into BIOS, this simple BIOS version doesn't allow me to change anything on the HD, but it does recognize it and let me do a HD test, so it does recognize the SSD. I then put the Windows Recovery disk in the CD drive, attempted to boot up, but the CD drive just spins and spins but never boots up. I thought the CD drive might be bad, so I tried an external USB CD drive with the Recovery disk, but it does the same (just spins). I even got a new Windows 7 installation disk (from another PC) to see if it will boot from it, but get nothing but a spinning CD I have not done anything yet to the HyperX SSD, haved not formatted or partitioned it.I thought this would be done by Recovery on the OS installationThe BIOS is set up to first boot from the CD drive, so the boot order is not the issue.

I've never experienced this message before. I have not had a virus or malware be detected in a year. This came up when I tried to close KVIRC, an IRC client program and turn off my laptop via the power button. Was this a glitch or something? I'm really hoping it isn't a virus. I haven't experienced any performance issues so..I should add the laptop appeared to freeze. I powered down, rebooted, and everything seemed to run normally.UPDATE: Microsoft security essentials picked something up with a full system scan. Not sure if the 3 viruses were related.
