How To Diagnose What Wrong With Upgrade ?

I attempted to upgrade my Vista Ultimate x64 to Win 7 Ultimate x64 yesterday and the upgrade process failed.

The install rolled back to my Vista install and all is good, but I really want to upgrade to 7 (and not do a clean install)

Can anyone help me out with how to diagnose what may have gone wrong with the upgrade? Is there an install log file somewhere that I can have a look at to discover the problem?

I think I may know the source of the problem, but would like to confirm it before moving forward.

The upgrade did tell me that my Silicon Image RAID controller may not work properly after the upgrade. But I don't have any drives connected to it. My system drive is a RAID 0 array on my Intel ICH8R/ICH9R SATA RAID controller.

Digitalriver Student Promotion: Wrong Language Upgrade
I recently purchased Win7 x64 upgrade through the Canadian student promotion I got through e-mail.  Download worked fine, everything worked fine until I started installing the upgrade...
I got the promotional e-mail in English, my Vista version is French...  Nothing in the e-mail and the purchasing process mentionned that there were multiple language versions...

So now I can't upgrade since we can't upgrade fr-CA to en-CA...  Anyway to get an fr-CA upgrade download in replacement?  I sent 2 messages to digitalriver with my order number and never got any reply (that was a month ago). And a suggestion: the language issues should be clearly indicated on the website, I didn't even know I had an english-only version before I started installing it.

Video Card Failing - How Do I Diagnose ?
Over the last few days I have been getting random and very intermittent BSOD's for the first time with Windows 7 x64.

Each BSOD during the memory dump before rebooting was making a reference that it couldn't start up my video driver or something in that nature. I have a nVidia evga 9800 GX2 with 190.37 drivers.

After a BSOD this morning, same reference as above, windows rebooted but resolution was 640x480, a quick look under device manager showed both GPU's on my 9800 GX2 had been stopped due to a problem with exclamation marks beside them but oddly I still had a display.

After the next reboot, I couldn't get into windows anymore. Not windows 7, or XP, or leopard (I am Triple Booting) I CAN however get in via safemode but my troubleshooting is not revealing much cause in safe mode, those drivers are naturally disabled.

The event viewer under administrative tools, showed a kernel-power reference during my last couple BSOD's which I believe is just me hitting the reset button when the computer was freezing up. There are no other critical references.

My initial thoughts is that something in the video card was slowly beginning to go, hence the casual BSOD's over the past couple days and now that's it. BUT the odd thing is that ALL the LED's on my video card are showing correctly, ie, if there was some kind of internal problem, there are a couple of them that should be showing red or yellow, but they are not.

Anyone have anyway of diagnosing that it is indeed my video card that is failing? Could it be the motherboard? Also, in safe mode in Windows 7, I tried reinstalling the 190.37 drivers but no changes.

Thoughts? Questions?

PS - I have tried startup (repair) and I have tried restoring to an earlier point. No changes. I am still in safe mode.

IE8 - Diagnose Connection Problems
Since about last Thursday, I've been having problems with the online MSN games that have been featured. Bloody Bubble Town has me addicted.

Anyhow, I'm having the same sort of issues with Win XP w/IE 7 - so I'm guessing it's not on my end.

I'm getting a page that says "Internet Explorer Can't connect..." and I have the option to diagnose the connection problem. Clicking on the button does absolutely NOTHING. I've checked in Process Explorer - and nothing seems to be changing when I click the button.

Anyone else see this happening?

Wrong Boot Screen
I originally had Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows 7 x64 dual booting fine.

I had a problem with Windows 7 - my fault- needing me to restore an Acronis backup.

I still am able to dual boot but Windows 7 now uses the Vista boot up sequence up to the Welcome screen, i.e. it does not show the sexy new dots morphing into the Windows Logo.

Any ideas where to look for an answer.

Installed Win 7 On Wrong Drive Do-over?
So I've decided that I want to use a Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB for my Win 7 OS C-drive and my WD 500GB drive as my E-drive for files.

The problem is that I thought of this after installing it on the 500GB drive.

Will it be okay to reinstall on the new drive if I delete Win 7 on the old one?

If so, is it pretty simple to reformat a drive with an OS on it?

Boot Manager On Wrong Drive
I installed Windows 7 X64 on my system where I first had a Vista installed on a 60GB partition on partition C of the first drive in the boot sequence. (two partitions C + D) And I have two other drives with only data H and P

When I installed Windows 7 I formatted the C partition and it installed flawless.

Then when I wanted to back an image, I found out that Windows 7 placed the bootmanager on the P drive. Removing the P drive an trying to fix it with the repair after booting from the DVD resulted in a message that this operating system was not supported. ?

After much searching I found that I could copy the bootmgr to the C drive.

Now my windows starts again as normal from the C drive. But I can see it is using some loader parts from the previously installed vista.

I would like to gave also this loader from Windows 7 but I cannot find how to get this done?

Is there anyone that has a clue?

Win7 Always Starts On The Wrong Monitor
I'm not sure where to put this post, so I'm putting it here. I have a dual monitor setup, an HP LP2275w as my primary monitor and a Viewsonic P95F+ CRT as my secondary monitor that I switch on from time to time. My problem is that when windows starts, it always goes to the secondary CRT monitor, even if it's off.

I have them set up correctly in the display settings where my LCD is the the main monitor, 1, and the CRT is 2. I also have this set correctly in the nvidia control panel, but I get the same problem every time windows starts.

Is there a way to fix this?

Did I Install The Wrong Virtualization Program
I'm running the RC of Win7, and I thought that it was supposed to integrate seemlessly with Microsoft Virtual PC, ie, once I install XP on the Virtual Machine, the folders on my Win7 PC should be visible through my XP machine.  The Win 7 page says "To install applications in Windows XP Mode, you start by selecting Virtual Windows XP from the Windows 7 Start menu", but I don't have 'Virtual Windows XP' on my Win 7 Start Menu--just Microsoft Virtual PC?What did I do wrong?

Will I be able to print to my Canon Color Laser Printer that only has a 32-bit driver if I've got the 64-bit version of Windows 7 installed?  I'm trying to understand how the Virtualization works, ie, does it go through 2 layers when communicating with a device (eg, 32-bit driver then 64-bit driver when communicating with a Printer).

Realtek HD Audio - Wrong Codec
i'm having issues with the realtek HD audio drivers. i just installed the latest version (2.24 i think) and i have no sound. note, i did not have a prior working version under windows 7 - i just installed windows 7 RC today for the first time.

one possible issue is that it appears to be using the wrong codec - i believe that i need the ALC882 codec, but in windows 7, it appears to have installed the ALC885 codec.

anyone know how to change the codec?

Keyboard Sending Wrong Keys
I noticed while in word that the keys i was  sending were not being translated onto the .doc as they should. Everything was capital for example, without caps locked. And I if selected a single word in the doc, or tried to, windows would select everything in the doc above were i selected, but nothing below, just with a single click.

So i rebooted, and now cannot login. Keep saying wrong PW. But if i try to RDP into the PC from another, i am able to login just fine.

I've uninstalled the device driver for keyboard and mounse, scan for chanaged and still no luck.

I cannot figure this out. There have been no updates applied to the PC.

Any ideas?

NTLDR Installed On Wrong Drive
I've just installed windows 7 on my laptop. I must say it runs great, and setup went withoug a hitch, except for one problem.I have my drive partitioned to where I can install both Windows 7 and Vista (as well as Ubuntu). I have three NTFS partitions: one for Data and programs, one for 7, and one so that I can install Vista at some later time.

For some reason, I now have NTLDR installed on my data and programs partition. Being somewhat of a neat freak, I would like for this to reside on the Win7 partition. I've tried copying the boot files from the data partition, but I was not able to copy all of the files, and was not able to boot directly from the Win7 partition. Is there any way to move NTLDR to a different partition?

Win7 Always Chosing Wrong Monitor
I install Win7 (x86 or the 64-bit), no matter if it was one of the Betas, or the RC, it always chose the TV connected to the HDMI-output of my nVidia GeForce9500GT, as the main screen = when it finalize the installation, I'm left with a blank monitor...Due to that I normally use the Monitor connected to the DVI.It still shows picture on my regular monitor while doing the first parts of the installation.

It doesn't matter if the TV is totally without current, it seems it's enough that the HDMI-cable is connected to the TV and the Graphic card.If I unplug one side of the HDMI-cable, then the Monitor returns as the main screen again, and I can finalize the installation.

This has NEVER EVER happend when I install XP or Vista, ONLY with Win7, so the problem must be with Win7.And the very same thing also happens at a Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H with Integrated ATI Radeon HD3200, when a friend of mine tries to install Win7 RC.So, what is wrong with Win7 ?

Screen Resolution Wrong On Boot
I have an XPS M1330 laptop with the Windows7 beta from MSDN. Over all things are great.

Occasionally, about 1 out of 4 boots, the screen resolution will be default - 800x600, instead of the proper 1280x800. I am using the Vista x64 driver as there are no Win7 drivers for the Nvidia G8400.

Is there anywhere to upload info about the situation? The MS connect website has nothing about Win7.

No Network Connection With Wrong Time
Network connections (peer to peer) from Windows 7 (RC) to Windows XP and Windows 2000 fail, if date and/or time on both computers are differing too much. In the moment I could not find out, how much deviation is allowed. Sometimes it works with even 1 hour difference, but sometimes network access fails even with 10 minutes difference. Took me some time to find out, why I was asked for the input of my credentials, even if I already saved them. And access was always denied, even with the right credentials. After correcting the computer time manually, I could access Win2k and Win XP again.

Usually I run a small batch-file with the NET TIME command in it, to synchronize time with one of my computers (Win2k). This works fine with Win2k and Win XP. In Windows 7 I got this script running by disabling User Account Control. But if the machine's time is too much deviating from the "master's" time, then network access is denied and I cannot get the right time from the master - and the I cannot access the network.Note: The master synchronizes time with a Time-Server in the internet.Has somebody an idea, how to solve this problem?

Security Key Passphrase Wrong
I recently installed Windows 7. I have a D-link DIR-615 wireless router in my living room and my computer has an adapter in order to connect to the internet. I had Windows XP and didn't experience any problems before. The problem is that when i typed my network password in (using windows 7), it said that the passphrase was wrong. I reseted my router and used the password and it worked just fine, so i dont think that its the router's or the adapter's fault.

When i turned my PC on the next day, i experience the same problem. I cannot connect to my network. I was never asked to put my password in again to connect to the network when i was using XP and i cannot reset my router every time i turn my pc on cause there are other people in the house that are using the network. Other computers, laptops and my iphone can connect just fine. Is there a solution to this problem?

Windows Automatically Installing Wrong Drivers
I installed my new graphicscard yesterday (XFX GeForce GTS 250) and when Windows 7 booted, it automatically started downloading drivers -without my approval- (probably my own fault for not having UAC on) before I even had time to mount the driver CD.

It turns out those drivers were most likely wrong, I still don't have OpenGL support and there is no settings program for the card. So... I have no idea of where to find my drivers and delete them so I can install the one from my CD. I've tried, I found my old drivers but I can't find the ones Windows installed. I can't even run the Setup.exe in the CD, it just loads and nothing happens. Yes, I have tried RAA. UAC is always down to zero.

Where can I find the drivers Windows 7 Home Premium Edition installed?
