Video Card Failing - How Do I Diagnose ?

Oct 22, 2009

Over the last few days I have been getting random and very intermittent BSOD's for the first time with Windows 7 x64.

Each BSOD during the memory dump before rebooting was making a reference that it couldn't start up my video driver or something in that nature. I have a nVidia evga 9800 GX2 with 190.37 drivers.

After a BSOD this morning, same reference as above, windows rebooted but resolution was 640x480, a quick look under device manager showed both GPU's on my 9800 GX2 had been stopped due to a problem with exclamation marks beside them but oddly I still had a display.

After the next reboot, I couldn't get into windows anymore. Not windows 7, or XP, or leopard (I am Triple Booting) I CAN however get in via safemode but my troubleshooting is not revealing much cause in safe mode, those drivers are naturally disabled.

The event viewer under administrative tools, showed a kernel-power reference during my last couple BSOD's which I believe is just me hitting the reset button when the computer was freezing up. There are no other critical references.

My initial thoughts is that something in the video card was slowly beginning to go, hence the casual BSOD's over the past couple days and now that's it. BUT the odd thing is that ALL the LED's on my video card are showing correctly, ie, if there was some kind of internal problem, there are a couple of them that should be showing red or yellow, but they are not.

Anyone have anyway of diagnosing that it is indeed my video card that is failing? Could it be the motherboard? Also, in safe mode in Windows 7, I tried reinstalling the 190.37 drivers but no changes.

Thoughts? Questions?

PS - I have tried startup (repair) and I have tried restoring to an earlier point. No changes. I am still in safe mode.

Windows 7 Failing After Addition Of New Wireless Networking Card?

Jun 18, 2012

I have put together my first computer build and so far ive got everything to work, without any major issues ive installed windows 7 64-bit and then motherboard drivers and graphics card and havent had any issues using the different features of windows 7. I then decided to get a 300Mbps Wireless Networking PCI Express Adapter from TP-Link to get access to the internet i already have in the house. I inserted the card in one of two approporiate PCI slots on the motherboard (Asus Sabretooth z77) that was next to the graphics card. But when i turned on the computer and windows 7 started up it started a full system reparation (my systems in swedish, "startreparation" in english windows?) for what reason i have no idea as it came up with no solution and all i could do was restart and try again, but to no avail.

- I did pass the memtest with no fault for a complete day
- I did check the inside, there is no apparent accumulation of dust
- I did test the hard disk and no fault found
- Fans are running. No evidence of overheating
- Did a Virus and Adaware test

What other test could I execute?

How To Diagnose What Wrong With Upgrade ?

Nov 2, 2009

I attempted to upgrade my Vista Ultimate x64 to Win 7 Ultimate x64 yesterday and the upgrade process failed.

The install rolled back to my Vista install and all is good, but I really want to upgrade to 7 (and not do a clean install)

Can anyone help me out with how to diagnose what may have gone wrong with the upgrade? Is there an install log file somewhere that I can have a look at to discover the problem?

I think I may know the source of the problem, but would like to confirm it before moving forward.

The upgrade did tell me that my Silicon Image RAID controller may not work properly after the upgrade. But I don't have any drives connected to it. My system drive is a RAID 0 array on my Intel ICH8R/ICH9R SATA RAID controller.

Very Difficult To Diagnose BSODs At Random Intervals

Apr 19, 2012

I've had a computer running rock solid for about 18mths. I've just used ~70% of it's parts to build a new computer for my dad and since then he's been experiencing constant BSODs. The computer is running a freshly installed over-the-counter bought OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 which is up to date as of last week. It will run fine for an unpredictable length of time between 15mins to half a day then BSOD. Sometimes it will then get stuck into a "crash-reboot" cycle and he will have to hard power it off.

The computer is less 18mths old. The parts I have been using confidently over the last 18mths are as follows:
- MOBO: Gigabyte P55-UD4
- CPU: Intel i5 750 quad core (never overclocked).
- RAM: 2x(DDR3 2GB G.Skill 1333mhz)

The new components we installed are:
- GFX: Asus ATI HD5550
- HDD Sata 200GB Baracuda
- CD Drive: LG DVD writer on an IDE ribbon
- PSU: Antec VP450P 450w

I initially had an old install of Windows 7 on a 120GB Sata drive but when he started getting issues I installed a brand new OEM Windows 7 on the Sata 200GB and even changed the Sata cable. It ran fine for a day then started up again. From what I could see none of the crashes pointed toward gfx drivers - however I've noticed CPUz will only tell me that it's a HD5500 series card and gives me no other info so maybe it isn't being recognised properly . The only other thing to change was the PSU - which admittedly is a budget one (but from reviews should be reasonable) from deduction it's the only thing I can put it down to.

Laptop Is Being Really Slow After New Hard Drive, How To Diagnose It

Feb 6, 2013

So one of my friend's laptop had been acting slow, and I took a look at it and I cleard out some applications but it was still going bad. it turns out the hard drive had to be replaced, so he sent it in under warranty. I reinstalled Norton 360 and Office for him, and helped him reinstall some of his games. Then i found out it was acting slow again, and was practically unusable for gaming! He's coming down this weekend, and I plan to take another hack at it. But I don't know what the cause would be. it's a new hard drive with a new factory image. I suspect that the new hard drive might be faulty, but I don't know how to test it. I do have some spare hard drives around that I could install, but I'd like kto know what testing processes or programs I can use to better diagnose the problem.

Video Card Not Recognized?

Recently ran a bunch of malware / antivirus programs to get rid of a zeroaccess trojan. (malwarebytes, mcafee, cccleanter, eset, hitman). Was finally able to get rid of the viruses in the services.exe and desktop.ini files. However once they were cleaned and got everything back to normal, I'm having problems with my video card being recognized by anything. Only recognizing the Intel® and not my Nvidia gtx 560M. It's not listed on the dxdiag page, not showing up as a selectable option for The Elder Scrolls Skyrim. Was working fine a few hours ago. It's listed under device manager just not showing up anywhere else. Just wondering if getting rid of those viruses might have deleted some needed .dll or something

-HP Pavilion p6750z Desktop PC-AMD Athlon(TM) II 250 dual-core processor-6 GB RAM-512MB DDR3 AMD Radeon HD 6450 (PCIE)-Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bitSo, two weeks ago I bought a desktop PC from HP. I wiped the drive to get all their vapor ware off, installed my software and everything went fine. Windows Update recognized the hardware on my machine and downloaded and installed the appropriate drivers after the wipe. Here's the problem. My girlfriend followed suit two weeks later and asked me to do the same thing for her. Our machines were slightly different but for the most part I expected a similar experience. Except it wasn't. This time Windows Update failed to recognize the Video Card after the wipe.So now she has this nice video card sitting in her machine using a Standard VGA Adapter instead of the Radeon drivers it needs. No matter how many times I download and install the Catalyst software from ATI's site it doesn't catch. What am I doing wrong?

Video Card Dying

Aug 7, 2009

i used to play games on this laptop and it was running fine. i will have to say that the most hardcore game i ran on this laptop would be call of duty 4, but other than that, it was just those free mmorpg like maple story and flyff. after i reformat to try windows 7, vista, back to windows xp and then back to windows 7, my card started lagging badly. when i'm in game, it would be fine for about a minute (nice fps), then it starts to lag. and when i ctrl+alt+del, it takes a bit of time before it pops up. sometimes, i have to just power off my laptop.

about 2 weeks ago, i reformatted and installed windows xp pro sp3 to see if it was just the os and drivers, but the problem still remains. also, i can't watch flash video on Internet as it starts to lag, but i'm able to watch .avi and such video with media player classic without any problems.

Video Card Recommendation

Sep 16, 2009

Well, my ATI AIW 1800XL finally bit the dust. The TV software hasn't been supported since Vista (and I'd just bought it before Vista went beta...) and I've been using Windows drivers since Windows 7 Beta. Now running 7 RTM.

Today, whilst only playing mp3s with WMP12, the system locked up and refused to boot. Throwing a cheap card in got me up and running, but I'm now browsing Newegg for cards. I've been using ATI for years, but am not opposed to Nvidia (although there are some complaints here regarding driver installation...).

Here are my uses:

I use this system heavily for business. This includes a lot of CS3 use and large, layered image files (blueprints). Since my office is in my home, this machine is not only my main business machine, but it gets a LOT of personal use as well, which includes movies, etc. I have also been known to install a game now and then (but not all that often).

I guess I'd like the ability to run GPU intensive games, but that may not happen (time is at a premium). The games I have copies of at the moment are Far Cry and Far Cry 2 (FC2 came with a 9550 CPU). I've heard good things about Crysis, but again, I may never go there. I guess I'm looking for a compromise? I'd like to keep the cost at around $120 or lower.

Relevant Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM

Q9550 CPU

8GB Gskill DDR2 PC2 6400

Gigabyte EP45-UD3r (PCI-E 2.0 16x)

Win 7 Freezes Due To Video Card

May 7, 2009

After reviewing videos of windows 7. I decided to make a test run of it.

Downloaded and installed without any problems (a big wow, since this desktop didn't like Vista at all).

It's quite a old computer, eMachines T2385, 2.3 GHZ Intel Celeron, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD. With the Intel 82845GL graphics card.

Since the install, 7 was on VGA_SAVE driver. I installed the driver with xp support, no luck, after 2 minutes it freezes completely. Remove and installed with the .inf file only, same problem. Left the VGA_SAVE driver, and it freezes too. TO add, I disabled the 3D acceleration. But no luck.

Any suggestions of installing another driver? OR I'm out of luck with 7?

I'm thinking of installing 7 on my Laptop (Intel 1.4GHz Celeron M , 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD with the intel 915/910GM video card) but I don't know if this problem will repeat..
