Grant Shared Permissions To A Single User From A Different Computer?

Jun 15, 2012

So I have just been setting up my new rig and, for several reasons, I was wanting to allow my desktop complete access to my laptop. However, I live in a very friendly household and my computer is in the main area. I allow other people to use the guest account on it all the time, but keep my own account with a password.

We also have many other computers on the same homegroup. I was wanting to allow just my account on my desktop complete access to some (or prefferably all) files on my laptop.

I tried going Local Disk (C Properties >> Sharing tab >> Advanced Sharing button >> 'Share this folder' checkbox >> Permissions button >> Add button

However when i had entered this I could not get my laptop to access any other locations that itself. It was there that I got stuck.

Folder Shared By Permissions Or Account / Password Required

Jan 3, 2012

I just noticed two of my computers are automatically sharing the entire user's directory with all permissions for everyone, I was reading up on this a bit before and it seems it's a Windows bug. I was wondering, since the password protected sharing is turned on by default, would anyone have been able to gain access to my computers information if they didn't have a user account / password or would they need an account / password no matter what the permissions are set to.

GP For Permanently Changing Shared Folder Offline Permissions?

Jul 11, 2012

've got a problem getting offline folder permissions to stick after restarts in our domain. Here's what I do:Go to MC>shared folders>shares>C$ (as an example)>properties>offline settings> and then I change "only files and folders users specify..." to "All files...". Apply and done.It works like a champ for what I'm trying to do (enable Restore Previous Versions of files to actually work- I learned that RPV fix from another thread here at seven), but after each restart the settings are restored to default. I'm assuming there's a group policy I can implement that'll auto-set those permissions permanently but I can't find any 'offline' shared folder permissions options anywhere

Windows 7 Single User, Merging Users-all Users, Default User, Public, Etc?

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7.He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed. He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:usersAll Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

User Permissions For Programs?

Apr 1, 2011

I want to install the AI utilities that came with my Asus P8P67 Motherboard. When I have them installed, however, all of the non-admin accounts keep getting a string of 5-6 admin password requests to allow the programs to make changes. This happens upon every login and is more than a little tedious.I tried to run them as an administrator but that didn't change anything.I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Professional if it matter.

Changing User Permissions?

Apr 14, 2012

I changed my user account to the Windows 7 Super Admin account because I am easily annoyed when a computer tries to lock me out of areas :P I am completely okay with this and have no issues. However, many people keep telling me all about how this is a very bad thing to do, e.g.if I get a virus the virus has full control of my system. I dont disagree with this and I can understand it, I just find the benefits of super admin outweigh the risk considering I generally know what I am doing, how to avoid viruses, etc.

I have considered though swapping back to a regular admin account and enabling UAC, however there is so much data, programs installed, program preferences, etc stored on my user, last time I changed it was about a month before things were back to normal. Does anyone know how I could just change the permissions of my current account (the super admin account)?

Permissions For User On Network

Jan 31, 2011

I'd like to share a folder only for a certain user on a LAN. I'm on Windows 7-hp and the user is on XP-h. But when I go to assign permissions, the Location field only allows choices from my Windows 7 machine. If I put the XP user's name in directly, it flags that error. The Windows 7 user is an admin, and I've tried this with both an XP admin and user account.Surely there is some way to do this? Or alternatively, is there some way to do this via subnets?

Single User Setup For Windows 7 Home Edition

Jun 26, 2011

My older Win XP laptop's hard drive failed.

I restored from Carbonite online back up service to my current Win7 Laptop. In the restoration process, it created a user from the previous machine's setup. I now have 2 user's which I would like to replace with "NO USERS" (since I am the sole user). (I use individual file passwords to protect my personal or confidential files.) I can live with one User which would have control over the entire computer rather than an Administrator with other users with different levels of access.

I am concerned with possibly losing access to the files under the new user if I delete the current users.

Scripting Error When Opening Emails From Single User

Oct 10, 2011

We are running an exchange 2003 server, with windows 7 machines (not ideal I know).

That aside, I am getting a scripting error when opening emails from a single user. This error ONLY appears on one users computer. So to clarify, this issue only pops up on one users computer, and only occurs when opening an email (even in preview) from another single user.

I have so far:

- Run a repair of office 2010 on the computer that displays the scripting error.

- Removed email signature from the senders computer, in case of problematic fonts (Even though to other users on the domain, this error does not occur when opening emails from this same sender.)

Win XP Pc Cannot Access Windows 7 User Restricted Shared Folder?

Oct 6, 2012

I have 10 pcs on a LAN workgroup. They are mixed Windows 7 and xp. I have set the file sharing, net discovery etc on win 7 on and password protection, firewall off. They all have user accounts like pc1, pc2,...pc10 and I have also created the account of the pc I want to access the restricted folder to the pc that shares it.I have set the ownerships on Windows 7 machines too. I can access the folders on XP machines from the Windows 7 successfully. When I try to set a user-restricted shared folder to a Windows 7 pc and access it from XP I fail. It says that I do not have sufficient rights to access the folder, contact the network admin. I can only access to the folder by setting it available to "everyone" or "guest" read/write but that s not what I want.

Power-shell Script To Create User Folders And Set Permissions?

Nov 18, 2010

I am grabbing a text file with a list of users in it. I want to then create folders for all those people and then set explicit permissions on those folders to only allow the users and admin access to it. So for the create user folder, I have...

$Users = Get-Content "C:Users.txt"
ForEach ($user in $users)
{
$newPath = Join-Path \mycomputerUsers$ -childpath $user
New-Item $newPath -type directory
}

This works great as I now have 100 folders created. But how do I use something like....

$acl = Get-Acl "\mycomputerusers$"
$permission = "mydomain$users","FullControl","Allow"
$accessRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule $permission
$acl.SetAccessRule($accessRule)
$acl | Set-Acl \mycomputerusers$$user

When I try to loop these together it says the folder already exists or the setaccessrule identity references could not be translated. how I loop it in with creating the folder? Or is there a way to just say...create folder based on this username, then take that username and make it the only admin on the folder along with the system admin?

NTFS And Share Permissions - Cannot Allow User To Create New Files Or Folders

Nov 8, 2012

With NTFS and Share permissions is there any way I can allow a user to (in a specific folder):

- Edit and overwrite existing files (like a notepad file)
But
- Not be allowed to create new files or folders

I have spent quite a while staring at the special permissions screen. When reading about the meanings of the special permissions from the Microsoft, it says that the "Create Files/Write Data" permission allows for the overwriting of existing files but it also allows for the creation of new files. Is there some way i can have one without the other? Split the permission? I have also been told that there is a flaw to this as when you open a word document it creates a temp file in the folder where the word document is, and having permissions set this way would cause the word document not to be able to open because it couldn't create that temp file.

Wireless Network Disappears From A Single Computer?

Nov 26, 2011

I have a variety of wireless internet enabled devices in my house running Windows 7, Ubuntu, iPod Touch, and Android. All of them function perfectly fine connecting to my Verizon Fios all-in-one modem/router, except one. One of my Windows 7 desktop PC's can usually connect just fine, but occasionally, it decides that there is no wireless network to connect to. Randomly, the list of available networks, just blanks out, and I get the icon of the signal bars with a red X through them. When I AM connected, the connection is full, strong, and reliable.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it goes away, except that it almost always seems to happen while I'm using it. I very rarely sit down to my computer to find it disconnected. Sometimes it will be off for a minute, sometimes an hour.

I have tried everything from DNS flushes to registry hacks and card drivers. I am pretty sure I have the most updated drivers for my card, and I have swapped wireless cards with other computers and the other ones work fine with this card, and it's still this PC that doesnt do so well. I do run bittorrent on the computer sometimes, but the outages do not always coincide with large downloads, or any downloads, but I have not ruled that out as a possibility.

Computer On LAN With Shared Resources

Oct 24, 2012

I have Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit that struggles along to see the shared resources of other computers on the LAN even if the "Network discovery" and "Files and Printers Sharing" options of the "Advanced sharing settings" applet are enabled. In other words, if I click on Network in Windows Explorer, no computer on the LAN is displayed; whereas, if I write "\<ComputerName>" in the address bar, I can see with difficulty its shared resources.

This fact is in each account. I have no firewall active, I use the network of type "Work" and I do not use the homegroup feature. The operating systems on the target computers are Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3. The computers have the same time. How can I check whether the SMB protocol is working properly?

Never Computer Can See Shared Files Or Directory

So here is the spin

If I type Computername on 7 I can see all my shared directory and files (with access to copy them over without a problem) Same on XP

I've even installed the printer that is on XP onto 7 (although it's can't seem to actually print at this time)

Based on the fact that I can type computer name and get access on both computers I would imagine all my settings are correcct... but like my spelling.. something must be off

Wake A Computer On The Network To Use A Shared Printer?

Jun 19, 2012

I currently have a printer connected to a computer in my room (Canon Pixma iP4300 [USB]). I also have a computer in the office which is connected to the network via a wireless extender. I am a little short of space in my room and am looking at which peripherals I can move away without too much hassle - the printer is one such thing which has a relatively large footprint and would ideally be located in the office.I am fairly confident that with a little research I could set up the printer to be shared from the office PC (Vista Home Premium x32) to other computers on the network, which would be a more suitable location for it.However, one thing that occurs to me is that it would require the office PC to be on in oder for other machines to print. Currently the office PC is set to go to sleep after a period of inactivity [20~30 minutes]. My question is, would it be possible for other computers on the network to wake this machine in order to use the printer connected to it?
